BANGKOK, Thailand – Chiang Mai’s historic and cultural sites have been included on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2015. Authorities from the Culture Ministry, the Fine Arts Department, and Chiang Mai Province have been working on preparing a nomination dossier to submit to the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Paris, which is expected to be proposed soon. The nominated properties include the monuments, historic sites, and cultural landscapes of Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai, also known as the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, has a long history, spanning over 700 years. At present, there are numerous important sites reflecting its rich cultural history, such as Wat Pra That Doi Suthep, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, the city walls and gates, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Pra Singh, Wat Jed Yod, Wat Suan Dok, and Wat Umong.
In Thailand, there are currently five cultural properties inscribed on the World Heritage List: the Historic City of Ayutthaya (1991), the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns (1991), the Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments (2023), the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site (1992), and the Phu Phrabat Historical Park (2024).
