KUALA LUMPUR – Southeast Asian foreign ministers gathered in Kuala Lumpur on Monday for a special meeting to address the ongoing situation between Cambodia and Thailand following weeks of deadly border clashes.
The talks follow renewed hostilities that have displaced hundreds of thousands and resulted in dozens of casualties on both sides this month.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, who arrived late Sunday, reaffirmed Bangkok’s “three-point” prerequisite for any truce: Cambodia must officially declare a ceasefire first, the cessation of hostilities must be verifiable and continuous, and Phnom Penh must commit to joint demining operations.
The meeting, scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. local time, includes representatives from 11 nations. Myanmar is participating via video link, while Vietnam has sent senior officials to represent its foreign ministry. (TNA)
