PHUKET, Thailand – A foreign tourist’s complaint about paying 150 baht for a coconut on a beach in Phuket has triggered a heated online debate over tourist pricing, local business practices, and perceived “double standards” in spending habits.

The tourist claimed the price came as a surprise during a beach visit, insisting it was not staged content but a real purchase. The post quickly went viral, drawing a wave of reactions from Thai social media users—many defending local vendors and pointing out that prices vary widely depending on location.

Some users explained that coconuts can be found for 30–50 baht in inland markets and non-tourist areas, while beachfront prices are naturally higher due to convenience, demand, and operating costs in prime tourist zones.

However, the discussion soon escalated beyond coconuts into broader debates about tourist spending habits.

Many commenters argued that price differences exist across all sectors of tourism and hospitality. Comparisons were made to drinks costing 60 baht in shops but 200 baht in bars, and even airport prices reaching around 150 baht for beverages and snacks. Some also referenced higher-end entertainment spending, noting that people often pay around 1,500 baht for companionship services without complaint, questioning why coconut pricing draws particular criticism.

Others argued that consumers ultimately choose where and what to buy, and that transparent pricing allows tourists to decide whether a purchase is worth it. “If you don’t want to pay, you can always choose another option,” one comment read.

At the same time, several users warned against generalizing the entire island based on one experience, stressing that Phuket offers a wide range of prices depending on location, from luxury beachfront venues to affordable local markets.

The debate highlights a familiar tension in Thailand’s tourism economy: the gap between visitor expectations of uniform pricing and the reality of tiered pricing in high-demand tourist destinations.

Despite the controversy, many agreed that informed choice remains key, and that tourists who explore beyond beachfront areas can still find significantly lower prices.
