BANGKOK, Thailand – Twelve provinces have been placed under close watch for heavy rain and possible flash flooding as persistent rainfall affects several parts of Thailand. The Royal Irrigation Department has been instructed to keep personnel, water pumps, machinery, and other equipment ready for immediate deployment to at-risk areas. Deputy Government Spokesperson Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn stated that Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Mukdahan, Saraburi, Roi Et, Yasothon, Nakhon Phanom, Udon Thani, Phitsanulok, and Amnat Charoen require close monitoring. Continued rainfall could cause flash floods, runoff, and waterway overflows, especially in low-lying communities and areas near foothills and natural drainage channels.
The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms across 60% to 70% of the North and Northeast through August 16, with heavy rain in some areas. The Central region could see thunderstorms across 40% to 60% of its area, with similar coverage forecast for the East through the end of the period. Irrigation authorities are also monitoring water flows into the Chao Phraya River Basin from the North and adjusting water management according to conditions. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to follow official warnings and move belongings, machinery, and agricultural equipment to higher ground if prolonged rainfall causes water levels to rise.
