SAMUT PRAKAN, Thailand – A 13-year-old student suffered serious injuries after a motorcycle allegedly ran a red light and struck her while she was crossing a pedestrian crossing in Bang Phli district, with CCTV footage capturing the moment of impact. The accident happened at around 6:10 p.m. on July 21, on Rural Highway Road SP.2001, also known as Sri Waree Noi Road, in Bang Chalong subdistrict, Bang Phli district. Rescue workers from Bang Phli were called to the scene and found a Grade 8 female student suffering serious injuries to her right leg and back, along with bruises and abrasions to her face and body. She was given first aid before being taken to Bang Phli Hospital. The motorcycle rider, identified as 31-year-old Nattawut, was also injured with cuts and bruises and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The injured student told rescuers that she had pressed the pedestrian crossing signal and waited for the red light before attempting to cross the road. She said she checked for traffic before walking across, but the motorcycle suddenly struck her, causing her to lose consciousness. Nattawut told police that he did not see the traffic light and could not remember what happened at the time of the crash. He denied drinking alcohol before the accident. CCTV footage from the area showed the student waiting for the crossing signal before looking left and right and beginning to cross the road. The footage then showed the motorcycle approaching at speed and allegedly continuing through the red light before hitting the student, throwing her several metres from the impact.
The case gained further attention after the student’s family sought help, saying they faced difficulties covering medical expenses following the accident. A local media figure launched an online fundraising effort, and within 30 minutes, members of the public contributed more than 110,000 baht, allowing the family to cover treatment costs and support the student’s recovery.
Doctors said the student suffered a broken right leg and required a cast. Initial examinations indicated that surgery was not immediately necessary, but her condition will continue to be monitored. Police said legal action against the motorcycle rider would proceed after he recovers from his injuries. Investigators are expected to summon him to acknowledge charges related to the crash.
