PATTAYA, Thailand – Mayor Poramet Ngampichet inspected progress on the Pattaya Second Road improvement project, saying the city is accelerating infrastructure upgrades while working to reduce disruption for residents, businesses and motorists. The project covers the section from the Dolphin Roundabout to Wat Chaimongkol intersection and is part of Pattaya’s wider plan to improve road surfaces and urban infrastructure across the city.
Mayor Poramet said Pattaya is currently moving forward with three major road improvement projects: Sukhumvit Road from the North Pattaya intersection to the Naklua intersection, Pattaya Second Road from the Dolphin Roundabout to South Pattaya intersection, and Jomtien Second Road.
The three projects had previously faced delays due to disputes over the construction cost estimates. However, contractors have now confirmed they will proceed without cancelling the projects.
The Pattaya Second Road upgrade has a 90-day construction period and is scheduled for completion by September 17, 2026. Contractors who fail to meet the deadline without valid reasons will face penalties under the contract.
The work is divided into two phases. The first phase began from the Central Pattaya intersection towards the Dolphin Roundabout, using a road recycling method. The existing surface is removed by 8 centimeters, followed by excavation of another 20 centimeters to strengthen the road structure. The recycled materials are then improved, compacted and left to cure for around seven days before a new asphalt surface is installed. The second phase will begin in early August, covering the area from the South Pattaya intersection to Central Pattaya. The section between South Pattaya and Central Pattaya will use an overlay method, with the existing surface removed and replaced, due to underground utility systems in the area. The section from Central Pattaya to Pattaya Klang will use the same recycling method as the first phase.
Mayor Poramet acknowledged that construction may cause inconvenience, especially during long holiday periods when Pattaya City may temporarily adjust working schedules to ease traffic congestion. The city has already coordinated with local business operators and informed communities about the construction plan. The project includes not only road resurfacing but also improvements to sidewalks, which may affect traffic movement and access to nearby businesses during construction. Pattaya City has installed warning signs and coordinated with traffic police, municipal officers and relevant agencies to help manage traffic and minimize impacts. The project has been underway for around 20 days, with more than 70 days remaining. City officials believe the contractor can accelerate work and complete the project earlier than scheduled because construction started later than originally planned. Beyond Pattaya Second Road, the city will continue improving Sukhumvit Road, Jomtien Second Road and other secondary roads, along with upgrading sidewalks, as part of a long-term plan to improve safety and infrastructure for residents and visitors.
