There was no leeway for bars operating past midnight Saturday as police enforced the legal closing time before a Buddhist holiday.

Thai police have taken to enforcing alcohol bans on Buddhist holidays from midnight to midnight. In the past, that meant bars had to close early on, for example, Saturday night, rather than simply close all day Sunday on the actual Visakha Bucha Day.

Now, with Thailand’s legal bar-closing time at midnight, it meant police just had to enforce the law.

Pol. Lt. Col. Kongpol Dechakumphu led a team of officers to Soi Buakhao’s Tree Town Market where they found some customers still sitting around finishing their beers and a couple bars still open. The bars were ordered to close and the patrons told to leave.
