Residents in Pattaya react to the planned closure of Railway Road for resurfacing works, with mixed views on traffic disruption and the city’s ongoing infrastructure upgrades expected to continue until May 2026.

PATTAYA, Thailand – The city of Pattaya has announced a temporary closure of a key stretch of Railway Road, from the Phon Prapha Nimit (Siam Country Club) intersection to the Nong Yai intersection, to allow for full road resurfacing works.

Officials said the western section of the project is expected to be completed in May 2026, as part of ongoing infrastructure improvements aimed at upgrading road conditions across the city.

The announcement, however, has sparked mixed reactions from residents and road users. Some praised the improvement works, noting that several roads in the area have already seen noticeably smoother surfaces and better drainage after recent upgrades.

Others, however, raised concerns about traffic disruption, urging authorities to carry out construction in phases or on one side of the road at a time to reduce congestion and maintain partial traffic flow.

Several residents also questioned the necessity of resurfacing certain sections, saying some parts of the road were still in relatively good condition, while others highlighted uneven repair quality in previously completed works.

There were also calls for clearer timelines, with residents asking for a specific completion date rather than a general “May 2026” target, citing the full 31-day month and ongoing uncertainty for commuters.

Some users expressed frustration over traffic congestion caused by simultaneous road closures across multiple routes, warning that it could worsen travel conditions ahead of the new school term.

Despite criticism, others defended the project, praising construction teams for improved road leveling and drainage installation in recently completed sections, and saying that upgrades were necessary to modernize Pattaya’s infrastructure.

The city has not yet provided additional details on phased traffic management during the construction period.
