KAMPHAENG PHET, Thailand – A 30-year-old man who became distressed after a motorcycle accident earlier in the day later held his wife at knifepoint outside a convenience store in Khlong Lan district, prompting police to negotiate with him for more than an hour. The incident unfolded late on September 5 at a convenience store in Khlong Lan Market, where the man, identified as Wuttikrai, grabbed his wife and pressed a knife to her neck while frightened shoppers looked on. Police said the man had crashed his motorcycle at the market around noon. Officers who responded treated his minor injuries and took him home, while his motorcycle was temporarily kept at a police post.
After returning home, he became upset when he could not find his wife. When she returned from work later in the evening, he reportedly became agitated and complained that nobody cared about him after the accident. Police and community leaders were called to the house at about 9 p.m. and took the couple to a police post to calm the situation. After the man appeared to settle down, officers planned to take them home.
Instead, he became agitated again, pulled his wife toward the market and argued with her along the way. He then dragged her into the convenience store, about 200 meters from the police post, and held a knife to her neck. More than 20 police and administrative officials surrounded the area and moved members of the public away from the scene. Officers spent more than an hour talking to the man and trying to persuade him to release his wife.
He eventually calmed down and surrendered the knife, allowing officers to safely free the woman. Neither the woman nor the other people at the scene was injured. The man was taken to Khlong Lan Police Station for further questioning. Police said he remained agitated and was initially difficult to interview. Preliminary charges included unlawful detention and carrying a knife in public. The case remains under investigation as police determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
