PHUKET, Thailand – A dramatic waterspout formed off the coast of Racha Yai Island near Phuket, creating a spectacular sight for tourists and boat operators before dissipating without causing any injuries or damage. The phenomenon developed on July 27 in waters off the island and was captured in photos shared by the Phuket Times Facebook page. Images showed a large funnel extending from dark storm clouds to the sea surface while several tour boats and passenger vessels were operating nearby.
Fortunately, the waterspout gradually weakened and disappeared before affecting any vessels. Authorities reported no injuries or property damage. Waterspouts typically develop over water during thunderstorms and unstable weather conditions. Although they are usually short-lived, they can pose a serious hazard to boats if they form along busy marine routes. Authorities urged boat operators, fishermen, and tourists to closely monitor weather forecasts and avoid approaching waterspouts, as the Andaman Sea continues to experience strong monsoon conditions with rough seas and frequent thunderstorms.
