PATTAYA, Thailand – A group of four students riding on a single motorcycle after school in Sattahip has reignited public concern over road safety among young riders in Thailand. The incident, which was widely shared on social media on June 15, shows the students travelling together on one motorbike along a local road after school hours. While one passenger was seen wearing a helmet, the others were not, raising concerns over inconsistent helmet use and overloading. Such scenes are not uncommon in parts of Thailand, including Pattaya and surrounding areas, where students sometimes share motorcycles as a practical and cost-saving means of transport. However, road safety observers warn that carrying multiple passengers on a motorcycle significantly increases the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident, particularly when proper protective equipment is not used.

Local commentary accompanying the widely shared post urged young riders to priorities safety, noting that while shared transport may help reduce costs amid rising fuel prices, it should not come at the expense of legal passenger limits and consistent helmet use. Road safety organizations and local community groups have also repeatedly expressed concern over similar behavior and have carried out awareness campaigns, including distributing helmets and promoting safe riding practices to students and road users in high-risk areas. Authorities and safety advocates continue to call for stronger enforcement and education campaigns in school communities, stressing that motorcycles are designed for limited passengers and that helmets should be worn by all riders at all times. The incident has renewed calls for sustained road safety education and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to reduce preventable injuries among young riders.
