PATTAYA, Thailand — Rain has brought little relief from the heat in Pattaya, with showers giving way to hot and humid conditions that continue to drive demand for cold drinks and ice. A survey of the city found rain falling intermittently during the day, but temperatures remaining uncomfortably high when the rain stopped. Restaurants, shops and nightlife businesses continue ordering ice, particularly from the afternoon into the evening when businesses begin serving customers.
An ice delivery worker said rain can reduce the number of customers visiting some businesses, but has had little effect on ice orders because restaurants and bars still need ice for drinks. Demand remains particularly steady among venues serving tourists and the nightlife sector. In Pattaya’s entertainment areas, businesses are also adapting to the unsettled weather. Although September is part of the low season and heavy rain can temporarily reduce the number of people walking the streets, customers often return once showers pass.
Bars are using drink promotions, in-house activities and a relaxed atmosphere to encourage customers to stay longer. Bar staff said their customers include both Thai and foreign visitors, although numbers remain below the levels seen during the high season. Businesses have also adapted their premises by adding fans, providing areas where customers can shelter from rain and keeping cold drinks and ice readily available.
A bar owner said September remains a challenging period because rents, wages, electricity and other operating costs continue even when customer numbers are lower. Operators therefore have to focus on retaining regular customers, attracting new ones and controlling costs. Weather can have an immediate effect on evening trade. Heavy rain around the start of the night can discourage people from going out, while a quick return to dry weather can bring customers back within a short time.
The unsettled conditions are consistent with the Meteorological Department’s outlook for September, which forecasts thunderstorms across 60–80% of the eastern region, with heavy rain possible in some areas. Temperatures are also expected to remain high enough to produce hot and humid conditions.
For Pattaya’s tourism businesses, the combination of rain, heat and the low season means flexibility is increasingly important. Operators are focusing on value, customer experience and careful cost management while continuing to provide products that remain in demand regardless of the weather.
Ice and cold drinks are among the clearest examples. Even on rainy days, customers still look for ways to escape the heat once the showers pass. Tourism operators remain hopeful that conditions will improve towards the end of the year, traditionally an important period for Pattaya’s tourism and local economy.
