BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Department of Land Transport is preparing new regulations requiring newly registered electric vehicles to use blue reflective license plates to make them easier to identify and improve safety during road emergencies. The proposed ministerial regulation will require privately owned electric cars and motorcycles receiving new registrations to display license plates with a reflective blue background. Existing EV owners will not need to replace their current plates. Instead, they will be required to attach a special identification mark to their existing license plates within one year after the new regulation takes effect.
Public electric vehicles and specialized electric vehicles will continue using their current plate colors but will also receive special identification markings. Department of Land Transport Director-General Sorapong Phaitoonphong said the change is designed to help the public, rescue teams and emergency officials quickly identify EVs involved in accidents. Electric vehicles require different emergency procedures due to their high-voltage batteries, including specialized equipment and safety measures to prevent risks from electrical leakage or battery fires.
The new identification system will also support future policies, allowing agencies such as expressway operators, shopping centers and planned Zero Emission Zones to provide EV-related benefits more efficiently without requiring manual database checks. The move comes amid rapid growth in electric vehicle use in Thailand and government efforts to support cleaner transportation and reduce PM2.5 pollution.
