A monk living in the woods outside Pattaya was told to move to a temple within a month.

Pong Subdistrict Mayor Nikorn Kadsai and Moo 2 village chiefs inspected the jungle behind a Shell gas station off Highway 36 on Feb. 7, finding Phra Suphat Khumkhainun living in a multipurpose building.

The 48-year-old monk, who produced papers showing he was legally ordained in Kalasin Province, confirmed neighbors’ complaints that he’d been living there for a year and had not informed the Banglamung District dean of monks.

Nikorn said he didn’t want to see the building become an enclave for monks who may not follow Buddhist rules, so he suggested the monk stay at Kong Yai Temple within a month or move out of the area.
