PATTAYA, Thailand — The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued its final warning on Sunday for heavy to very heavy rain in several parts of Thailand, with Bangkok and surrounding areas, Chonburi and other eastern provinces among locations expected to receive heavy rainfall.
The warning, issued at 5 p.m. on Sept. 13, is the 14th and final announcement for the current weather event. The TMD said heavy to very heavy rain would continue in parts of the Northeast, East and lower South, while lower Central Thailand, including Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, and parts of the western South could see heavy rain.
The weather pattern is being influenced by a high-pressure system or cool air mass over upper Thailand, while a monsoon trough extends across the upper South, the upper Gulf of Thailand and the East toward a strong low-pressure area near the central coast of Vietnam. The southwest monsoon is also continuing to affect the lower Andaman Sea, lower South and lower Gulf of Thailand.
The TMD warned that heavy and accumulated rainfall could cause flash floods and runoff, particularly in foothill areas, near waterways and in low-lying locations. People living in areas prone to flooding were advised to remain cautious and avoid routes where flooding frequently occurs.
For Monday, Sept. 14, the Northeast is expected to have thunderstorms covering about 70% of the region, with heavy rain in several provinces and very heavy rain possible in Nakhon Phanom and Ubon Ratchathani.
In the East, thunderstorms are forecast across about 60% of the region, with heavy rain in Chonburi, Rayong and Chanthaburi and very heavy rain possible in Trat. Winds will be variable at 15–35 km/h, with waves around 1–2 metres and higher than 2 metres during thunderstorms.
Bangkok and its surrounding areas are forecast to have thunderstorms over about 60% of the area, with some locations receiving heavy rain. Temperatures are expected to range from 24–26°C at night to 33–35°C during the day, with northeast winds at 10–20 km/h.
The lower South will also remain wet. The eastern coast is expected to have thunderstorms over about 70% of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Phatthalung, while very heavy rain is possible in Chumphon and Surat Thani.
On the western side of the South, thunderstorms could cover about 80% of the region, with heavy rain in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi and Trang. Seas around Phuket and farther north are forecast to reach about 2 metres, with waves higher than 2 metres during thunderstorms.
The TMD also said the strong low-pressure area near central Vietnam could become stronger and move closer to northern Vietnam during Sept. 13–14. Residents are advised to continue monitoring weather updates and take care when planning travel and outdoor activities.
Although the Sept. 13 announcement is the final warning for this particular weather event, the department advised the public to continue following its regular forecasts and official announcements, particularly in areas where rain has already accumulated.
