Foreign tourists are spending less, but their numbers are growing, giving Pattaya’s mayor hope for full recovery by the end of the year.

Poramet Ngampichet said Aug. 23 that five of six visitors to Pattaya this year have been Thai. But the million foreigners that have come mostly have been from India and Vietnam. They spend less than Europeans, he said.

But the city is getting busier, with beaches full on weekends and holidays and nightspots gradually reopening.

Many tourist attractions are still operating at less than full capacity, but as tourist numbers increase, that could change by year-end, offering more employment opportunities to Thais, Poramet said.

Streets that were once bustling with shops and bars are still deserted waiting for the influx of European tourists before reopening.
