PATTAYA, Thailand – The long-awaited improvements to Jomtien Beach are steadily taking shape, with new sidewalks, expanded lighting, and parking capacity for more than 700 vehicles now in progress. Authorities are also addressing chronic flooding issues by installing larger drainage pipes and water retention basins to better manage rainwater.
Residents have welcomed the upgrades but voiced mixed opinions about the ongoing works. Some praised the wider and cleaner pathways, noting the shade provided by trees the Tropical Almond, while others raised concerns about persistent drainage problems, exposed electrical wiring, and traffic disorder caused by poorly organized one-way systems.
“I like being under the Tropical Almond trees; it’s fresh and shady,” said one resident, while another cautioned, “The beach looks beautiful, but black water is still flowing into the sea — they should install sediment traps before letting it drain.”
Public frustration also extended to parking and road access, with some noting congestion, illegally occupied spaces, and unsafe conditions during rain. Calls for additional shade, better traffic organization, and underground power lines were also common.
Despite the concerns, local officials emphasized the upgrades aim to create a more attractive and functional beach environment for both residents and visitors. Work continues along the stretch, with expectations that the improvements will be completed in phases, including further flood mitigation measures and landscaping enhancements.
