BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has clarified the fiscal year 2027 budget allocation for projects in Cambodia, stating that the figures circulated on social media are inaccurate and that the allocation covers contractual interest obligations for existing projects, not new funding. Government Spokesperson Ekkapob Pianpises has confirmed that the relevant budget totals 18.2 million baht, comprising 12 million baht for the R67 road project and 6.2 million baht for the Stung Bot border checkpoint project. These funds cover contractual interest obligations for completed projects and do not finance new initiatives.
The spokesperson noted that subcommittees and committees in both the House of Representatives and the Senate reviewed and questioned the allocation. The responsible agency provided details during the parliamentary budget process, and the allocation remained unchanged. He confirmed that both projects are complete and Cambodia is repaying the loans as agreed. Cambodian authorities continue to make repayments, and Thai contractors and supervisors participated in both projects.
The Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA) arranged financing through Thai financial institutions. Financing conditions require the use of Thai operators, materials, and equipment. In joint ventures, Thai partners must hold over 51% of the shares. Under the agreements, NEDA is responsible for part of the interest payments, which forms the basis for the 18.2-million-baht allocation. Failure to meet this obligation could affect contractual terms and Cambodia’s loan repayments. The spokesperson also urged the public to rely on accurate information and reaffirmed that all actions comply with relevant frameworks and prioritize the interests of Thailand and its people. (NNT)
