BANGKOK, Thailand – The knowledge and heritage of Thai traditional attire, or Chud Thai, which stems from the royal aspiration of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother to preserve and sustain Thailand’s traditional dress heritage, will once again be presented to an international audience in Japan.
The Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture, will host “CHUD THAI: KNOWLEDGE, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND PRACTICES OF THE THAI NATIONAL COSTUME” on September 17–18, 2026, at the Hyokeikan, Tokyo National Museum. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya will preside over a presentation featuring all eight styles of Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom and three styles of Phra Rajathan shirts for men, along with demonstrations of Thai craftsmanship. The event aims to share knowledge of Thai national dress and traditional craftsmanship with international audiences.
Japan has played an important role in promoting Thai textiles internationally. In 1981, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother visited Japan, where SUPPORT Foundation products and a fashion show featuring mat mi silk were introduced to Japanese audiences. Thai arts and crafts have since been showcased in Japan on several occasions. This upcoming exhibition builds on those historic efforts, demonstrating the ongoing preservation of Thai heritage and its relevance in a modern international context.
