PATTAYA, Thailand – Police officers and members of the public at Pattaya City Police Station were left puzzled when a motorcycle taxi driver arrived shortly after midnight carrying a cardboard box containing a large fruit bat. The 45-year-old driver, identified as Decha, was working in the Soi Buakhao area when he spotted the bat lying in the middle of the road, apparently unable to fly. Concerned that passing vehicles could hit it, he stopped and carefully moved the animal into a cardboard box.
After trying to contact several agencies for assistance without finding somewhere to take the bat, Decha decided to bring it to Pattaya City Police Station at around 12:10 a.m. on August 13, hoping officers could contact the appropriate authorities or find someone able to care for it. When officers opened the box, they discovered the large fruit bat inside, creating an unusual scene at the police station during the early hours of the morning.
Police spoke with the driver and advised him to release the bat in a safe area where it could return to its natural habitat. The unusual late-night visit brought smiles and surprise to those at the station, while highlighting the driver’s willingness to stop and help an animal in danger rather than leave it in the road.
