Thailand’s biodiversity grows with discovery of ‘Princess Yeast’

Kasetsart University researchers display the newly identified “Princess Yeast,” discovered in Mukdahan and named in honor of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 70th birthday.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Researchers at Kasetsart University have identified a new yeast species, Blastobotrys princeps sp. nov., or “Princess Yeast,” during a study of microorganisms associated with wild mushrooms in Phu Pha Thoep National Park in Mukdahan province. The discovery adds to scientific knowledge of Thailand’s biodiversity and could support future research in agriculture, food science, and the bioeconomy. The research team included Asst. Prof. Dr. Pannida Khunnamwong, Prof. Dr. Savitree Limtong, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nantana Srisuk and master’s student Panadda Nuanthaisong of Kasetsart University’s Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, working with Dr. Baramee Sakolrak of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.



The species was isolated from a wild Russula mushroom collected in the national park. Researchers named it “princeps” in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the occasion of her 70th birthday, recognizing her contributions to taxonomy and biodiversity. The Latin word “princeps” means “a foremost person,” “a leader,” or “one of the highest distinction.” The discovery followed an analysis of 90 yeast strains isolated from 60 wild mushroom samples. Researchers found one strain, identified as DMKU-TM03, to be genetically distinct from all previously recorded species, leading to its classification as a new species through molecular and polyphasic taxonomic analysis.
