Bangkok authorities say the Purple Line tunnel site has stabilized, allowing a partial reopening of Prajadhipok Road while engineers continue monitoring repairs and nearby buildings.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong Angkasakulkiat has reported improved conditions following water seepage into the construction tunnel of the MRT Purple Line section near Wongwian Yai Intersection. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and the Metropolitan Police Bureau report that water entering the tunnel has decreased significantly. No further subsidence has been detected in nearby buildings or structures, and cracks in the area have remained stable for five consecutive days.

The Ministry of Transport, MRTA, the contractor, and tunnel engineering specialists continue to assess the cause, repair measures, and traffic arrangements. Experts have determined that a limited reopening will not affect repair work. However, the Deputy Transport Minister has directed agencies to maintain close surveillance for two more days before a final safety assessment. Part of Prajadhipok Road is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Initially, one-way traffic will be allowed from Wongwian Yai Intersection to Ban Khaek Intersection. Officers will be deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety. MRTA has assisted 128 apartment residents and is following up with 1 additional resident. Sixty-one commercial building operators and street vendors have registered for compensation, which MRTA will expedite in accordance with principles of fairness and transparency. (NNT)
