Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul provides a progress update on the construction of the royal crematorium and ceremonial structures for the late Queen Mother Sirikit, which are being designed in accordance with ancient royal traditions and are scheduled for completion in October.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The construction of the royal crematorium and ceremonial structures for the late Queen Mother Sirikit is slated for completion this October, according to a government progress report.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, serving as the chairman of the funeral organizing committee, emphasized that the proceedings are being meticulously planned to uphold ancient traditions and ensure the highest honors. To guide the process, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has been invited to serve as the official advisor for the funeral arrangements.

The Fine Arts Department’s design for the Phra Merumat, or royal crematorium, seeks to balance historical precedent with artistic symbolism reflecting the Queen Mother’s legacy. The structure will feature a unique crown-shaped spire modeled after royal headgear, supported by a seven-tiered roof. At its peak, a “Brahma face” will be sculpted to represent the Queen Mother’s transition to the Brahma realm and her status as the “Mother of the Land,” a title honoring her lifelong dedication to her subjects. The entire monument will be crowned by the Nine-Tiered Great White State Umbrella, the highest symbol of royal authority.

The surrounding landscape will be designed according to the “Brahma Universe” concept, featuring circular ponds populated by mythical Himavanta creatures and characters from the Ramakien epic. This specific artistic choice honors the Queen Mother’s significant contributions to the preservation of Khon masked dance.

Construction is scheduled to commence in February, with a strict timeline leading to its conclusion in October. Once the site is ready, the government will submit the final progress to His Majesty the King for a formal decision on the official date of the Royal Cremation ceremony. (TNA)
