BANGKOK, Thailand – Leaders of the People’s Student and Citizen Reform Network (PSCRN) have announced a large-scale protest on Sunday (Aug 31) to oppose the Pheu Thai Party’s prime minister candidate, citing concerns over suitability and potential obstacles to effective government administration.
The announcement was made at Victory Monument in Bangkok, following Pheu Thai’s declaration that it will continue as a leading force in forming the next government. PSCRN leader Pichit Chaimongkol stated that the party’s overlapping domestic and international interests could create conflicts that hinder governance, and he strongly opposed the candidate’s appointment.
Despite recent developments, the group emphasized that the public’s mission is not yet complete, as former Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra and the Pheu Thai Party continue to pursue political influence.
Dr. Warong Dechgitvigrom, chairman of the Thai Pakdee Party, noted that while recent events may appear to be a preliminary victory for the people, they do not constitute a lasting or genuine political success. He warned that these developments could lead to ongoing political challenges that citizens must address, and highlighted that the Constitutional Court’s ruling removing Paethongtarn Shinawatra from office has intensified political tensions.
Speakers at the announcement, including Jatuporn Promphan from the People’s Unity Movement, also raised concerns about unresolved issues along the Thailand-Cambodia border, which they argue stem from previous Pheu Thai administrations. They stressed that any continuation of the party’s leadership could exacerbate such disputes.
The network emphasized the need for constitutional reform while maintaining key protections in Sections 1 and 2, warning that attempts to bypass public opposition would lead to further conflicts. Organizers stressed that the resignation of Paethongtarn Shinawatra does not signal an end to political maneuvering, as efforts to form a government continue under the same party.
While acknowledging concerns that turnout for Sunday protest may be limited, organizers confirmed that the demonstration will proceed to raise public awareness and maintain pressure on political actors. (TNA)
