Surin border shaken by dawn rocket barrage as fighting enters fifth day—locals report over 40 BM-21 shells in one village.

SURIN, Thailand – Fighting intensified at the Thai-Cambodian border in Surin early Monday morning (July 28), entering its fifth consecutive day. The heaviest clashes were reported near the Ta Kwai Temple area. A news team on the ground in Bak Dai Subdistrict, Phanom Dong Rak District, found over 40 BM-21 rocket shells had fallen in some villages. While there are no reports of damage to houses, several cows were killed, and much of the farmland was hit.

Heavy weapon fire began around 3 a.m. and continued sporadically, with bursts of intense gunfire. A particularly large-scale exchange occurred at 10:30 a.m. and lasted more than half an hour, prompting F-16 fighter jets to strike back around 11 a.m. The primary zones where artillery is being launched across the border are Ta Kwai Temple and Chong Krang. Activity at Ta Muen Thom Temple remained light, possibly due to Cambodia awaiting more weapons after suffering heavy losses. The area was heavily shelled, prompting the village headman to order the local volunteer defense force to retreat further for safety. Alerts to seek shelter in bunkers are regularly sent out via radio communication.

At a temporary shelter in Surin city, evacuees continue to struggle with sleeping conditions, citing both stress and overcrowding. Health concerns are rising among those aged 50 and over, many of whom are experiencing insomnia, dizziness, and digestive discomfort due to stress. While drinking water supplies are adequate, many other essential supplies are still urgently needed.

Despite the challenges, the presence of a royal mobile kitchen has ensured that affected residents receive sufficient food at every meal. Many victims expressed deep gratitude and heartfelt appreciation for His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen, whose compassion and support have brought strength and solace during this crisis.
