CHIANG RAI, Thailand – The Sai River overflowed its banks Monday morning (July 28), flooding parts of Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai province, including the Sailom Joy Market area and nearby residential neighborhoods.
The flooding was caused by a breach in the flood barrier near “Koh Sai” (Sand Island), where water poured into the shrine compound and the Mai Lung Khon community. Local officials reported that the barrier had developed multiple leaks, allowing water to spread quickly through low-lying areas.
Emergency crews, acting on orders from the Mae Sai District Chief, were deployed to seal the breaches and reduce the flow of water. Damage to homes and businesses is still being assessed as conditions evolve.
Disaster response teams remain in place, monitoring the situation and providing assistance to residents. Authorities are urging caution, as water levels remain high in affected areas. (NNT)
