Charlie met with Father Ray in his office at the Orphanage and presented two cheques from donors in the United Kingdom wanting to assist children at the orphanage. The first amount of 1,180 euros (54,280 baht) was donated by the staff of Cadbury and the second amount of 1,760 Euros (80,960 baht) came from Charlie and his friends.

Charlie said he has made donations to the orphanage many times before and feels compassionate towards helping underprivileged children and hopes to volunteer his time in the future. The amount handed this time will be supplemented in the future when Charlie returns to the UK where he will look for further funds to hand over to the Pattaya Orphanage in aid of the children.

Jomtien Boathouse goes acoustic

By Miss Terry Diner

The Jomtien Boathouse, the latest ‘in place’ to eat in Jomtien, has been featuring an easy-listening group for the past couple of months, but on Thursday 6th March from 8 p.m., the stage will feature an acoustic evening with Ric and Harpic and friends. These musical soirees were an immense success at their previous venue, the Captain’s Corner, and Ib and Kannikar Ottesen felt that their new venture on Jomtien Beach Road would be an ideal showcase for some of the pro-am talents from the Eastern Seaboard region.

Ib Ottesen has invited friends to an acoustic evening at the Jomtien Boathouse on Thursday March 6 beginning at 8 p.m.

If you enjoy great music, from C&W to Rock and Ballads, the Jomtien Boathouse will be the place to be on Thursday 6th. You are advised to book as the seats are limited!

Italian maintains a long relationship with Pattaya

Guest every year since 1978

77-year-old retired Italian Domenico Spadari can certainly be considered a special guest in Pattaya. He has been spending holidays in Thailand for 30 years, and the last 25 in Pattaya (often twice a year) and until recently, with his wife, 69 hotelkeeper Deima Baldelli, who sadly passed away last June.

Domenico (left), shown here with his son Aldo and two Dusit Resort receptionists, has been coming to Pattaya since 1978.

He is currently staying for two weeks at the Dusit Resort with his son, Aldo, 40, Italian Literature professor and journalist of “Il Resto del Carlino” in Ancona, the oldest and most respected newspaper edited in Bologna.

Domenico said he is as fond of Thailand now as he was the first time he visited. So much so, in fact, that he has decorated the family hotel, called “Panoramic” and located in Sirolo Italy (a pretty sea village on the cliff of Mount C๒nero near Ancona City), in Thai style and filled it with wood furniture, sculptures and objects of value.

Domenico has many friends in Pattaya and he is well known, especially amongst local traders. “I have been traveling all around the world with my wife,” Domenico remembered, “and I feel Pattaya is my second home … the best place for a true holiday. Before the Dusit I stayed at Montien and Royal Cliff. Everywhere (I went in Thailand) I met a big organization, many amusements, an incredible variety of shops, great and magnificent hotelier complexes. This really is the land of ‘the culture of hospitality’. Many people are kind and smiling. Don’t lose these aspects,” he recommended, “it is most important for preserving tourism.”

Help for those helping the children

by Lesley Warner

During the weekend of February 8-9, staff from Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and staff from the Huay Pong institute, Camillian Centre, Rayong Demand Centre, Fountain of Life and Ban Jing Jai met for a workshop on counselling skills that would give the staff some new ideas, information and knowledge about the children in their care. The workshop was from 8.30 a.m. - 4.30 p.m. for 2 days with a buffet lunch. The workshop was organized by the Rayong Ladies Circle, who for the past 2 years have been supporting the Camillian Centre and Huay Pong.

A tribute to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital from Kroo Arunee.

As you can imagine, it’s not easy working with children and teenagers that have been traumatized by incidents that have occurred in their young lives. Some are street children, some are abused children and some are children from very poor families.

It took a lot of time and effort from many dedicated people and a donation from the Danish women’s club “Margrethe Clubbed” that made this workshop possible.

The workshop started with the group singing and playing games to get everyone relaxed and in the right mood to absorb the lecture given by psychologist Dr. Umporn Ratanawit.

Dr Somchai giving advice on stress management.

Go with the flow.

Then Dr. Somchai advised the teachers to take care of themselves and their families first; this would enable them to have the strength and ability to give the best possible help to the children in their care. He then introduced them to different methods of stress management.

I asked Dr. Somchai why he had an interest in these particular children, and he answered, “They lack many of the opportunities that other children have, not only materially but the lack of tender love and care from their own families ... they need all the help they can get.”

I then asked him, “If you could only give one piece of advice on stress management, what would it be?” He said, “Go directly to the cause of the stress, face up to it and correct it yourself. If this doesn’t work consult a doctor.”

The second day of the workshop focused on the group ideas and brainstorming for the teachers, on how to get to know the children in their care. They watched videos on prohibited drugs, counselling procedures and children’s problems, led by Dr. Chariya Watnasoporn (psychologist); and then had a very interesting time asking the doctor questions.

Finally, they went through an evaluation of the event; remarks were all very positive and popular demand was for an annual training programme from all 5 institutions. A teacher from the Fountain of Life, ‘Kroo Arunee’ made some positive comments about Bangkok Pattaya Hospital during the training.

Everyone was grateful that the doctors very kindly donated part of their salary to be used for a future fun day for the children. It was agreed by all, that the staff from the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital created a workshop that was both informative and fun!
