The Sanitation Department said Jomtien Beach’s recent murky seawater is the result of the construction of new sewage pipes.

Following complaints about cloudy water and foul odors near Soi Wat Boonkanchanaram, sanitation chief Wirat Jirasripaitoon said June 16 that the source of both is a large project to replace and extend sewage pipes. Sand at the beach is being dug up to lay the pipes further out into the sea.

As a result, the sand is making the water murky and the open sewer lines are responsible for the smell. He confirmed none of the pipes are leaking.

The contractors have already been told to be cautious about affecting the environment and they are now using excavators to dig up and spread dark sand on shore so that it can dry and let nature take its course in cleansing it.
