The reading and writing assurance project by the Pattaya Education Office began in all Pattaya schools in 2010 and is aimed at elementary school students.
Children participate in Pattaya’s youth literacy program, which has been showing improvements each year since its inception.
In its first year, 8,894 students participated and 7,442 passed. In 2011, 2,948 students participated and 2,417 students passed while 531 failed. This year, 8,395 students participated and 7,885 had passed while 510 failed.
“The continuous operation of the project has proved successful in promoting knowledge, understanding in phonetics - including writing the Thai alphabet - and words for students in the Prathom level,” Jintana said. “Students have a stronger foundation in reading and writing Thai correctly.”
For 2013, Pattaya has approved 1 million baht to allow 8,269 students from Prathom 1-6 to participate. Officials hope to see a 100 percent improvement in pass rates.
