Pattaya Sports Club Fishing News
Capt Dene
Saturday, July 28 was our fifth and last trip for the
month and it turned out to be one to remember. With two days of bad weather
prior to the trip and forecasts of high winds, storm warnings and heavy seas
predicted, many phone calls between the participants and the boat captain
took place before a final decision was made to proceed.
Accordingly, four stalwarts set out from Khram Marine at
07:00 hours with some fears and trepidation in gloomy conditions and dark
cloudy skies on the horizon. The outward journey was satisfactory with
relatively small waves but on heading past the last island into open seas,
we encountered heavy swells of around 3 meters. Nevertheless, we continued
on and 20 minutes later braced ourselves against the waves and started
fishing.
At once we started pulling up fish nonstop, pausing only
when the captain had to relocate the boat which was drifting quite rapidly
in the conditions. This continued for some 3ฝ hours until the wind and the
swells increased considerably and the captain wisely moved to the leeward
side of one of the islands. Remarkably, the fish were still plentiful and we
were kept busy until around when 16:00 hours when storm clouds were seen
brewing on the horizon and we were prudent in heading for home some 30
minutes earlier than usual. Again, we were lucky in docking back at Khram
before the rain started.
There are no photos this trip for 2 reasons; one, there
were no large fish caught and two, I was too busy catching fish to take any
pictures. Dang, assisted slightly by Solly, took home an estimated catch or
12 plus kilos. My catch, assisted greatly by the captain, came in at just
under 15 kilos (after scaling, gutting etc.) and Jeff had a respectable
catch estimated at 7-8 kilos. The majority of fish caught were pla-dang
averaging around 5 or 6 to the kilo – beautiful eating.
The captain and deckhand are to be complemented on
cleaning all our fish and packing them on ice for our trip home for the
modest fee of 100 Baht for person. Damn good value!
Next trip on Saturday 4 August is fully booked but there
are vacancies on scheduled trips 9, 18, and 23 August. Tel 081 862 6279 for
booking.

Two wins for Eddy Delaney
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, July 22, Green
Valley – Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob St.Aubin (12) 36pts
2nd Jack Grindvold (2) 36pts
B Flight
1st Ed Delaney (25) 42pts
2nd Mike Craighead (20) 38pts
Near Pins: No 4 Sim Davis, No 9 Don Lehmer, No 12
Bill Broschart, No 16 Bill Broschart
Nobody told Co. Cork’s Ed Delaney it was not the monthly
medal, so Ed went out and shot the best on the day 42 points, thereby
reducing his handicap without the benefit of picking up a trophy! He won’t
be happy about that. Ed was four shots clear of Mike ‘the Mechanic’
Craighead whose exploits continue to amaze. Well done Mike!

Colin Davis, left, with
Sunday’s winner Eddy Delaney.
In A Flight we saw Jack Grindvold, who has not been able
to play as often as he has previously, still gave evidence that infrequent
play will not equate to infrequent pay as Jack’s super 36 points related to
a round of 74 gross. This gave him the flight silver behind as Bob St.Aubin,
who must have thought his chances were very slim as he started with two no
scores on the 4th and 5th holes.
To his credit Bob calmly reacted with seven straight pars and finished equal
to Jack’s 36 points to take the flight on the resulting count back.
I am not sure if this as happened before but no 2’s were
recorded and so a rollover next Sunday.

‘Monica’, left with ‘Aussie’
Clint.
Monday, July 23, Mountain
Shadow - Stableford
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 31pts
2nd Rod Brown (18) 31pts
A relatively modest group, attributable to the back–to
back playing days, took on the Ronald Fream creation of Mountain Shadow.
The scores on the day reflect the difficulty of the
course and this combined with the heat and humidity produced four players
tied on 31 points. Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jeffreys emerged the winner of
the resulting count back with Rod Brown claiming the silver to fill the
podium. ‘The Donkey’ did have the comfort of the only 2 of the day as
Savatore went walkabout.
Wednesday, July 18,
Burapha A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 36pts
2nd Stuart Rochi (15) 36pts
B Flight
1st Ed Delaney (25) 36pts
2nd William Peach (21) 33pts
Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jeffreys and our title boy Ed
Delaney were ‘co-men of the match’ as they posted joint best scores of the
day of 36 points in A Flight and B Flight respectively. Mike was followed in
A Flight by Stuart Rochi with 33 points, and our title boy of the week Ed
was followed in by everyone’s favorite William Peach, who matched Stuart’s
33 points.
Ed Delaney a brace, Eddy Beilby, Barry Copstake and Jim
Bell shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, July 27, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Max Scot (4) 37pts
2nd Bob Watson (3) 34pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (19) 37pts
2nd Barbra Cooper (29) 31pts
Although Fridays at Khao Kheow can be a traffic
challenge, the risk is always worth it to play a most enjoyable layout. The
good sized field was split as usual into A and B Flights and the venue
choice certainly suited the society’s Aussie members as all but one of the
four places were garnered by the ‘golferoos’.
Max Scot had a great showing in the senior flight with a
solid 37 points that was good for co-man of the match. Bob Watson on 34
points took the silver.
Ireland’s Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw stopped it being
an Aussie rout as he matched Max’s 37 points. Peter was six shots clear of
the only lady in the field, Barbra Cooper.
Both flights contained a 2 - Jim Bell in A and Brian
Price in B.
As everyone knows who the bar is named after so it was no
surprise that the bar celebrated Monica’s 39th
birthday, the buffet was excellent and the sherbets’ went down well. The big
surprise was the personal appearance of Monica’s double - George ‘manic’
Jackson.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us, just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Bunn blitz at Crystal Bay
Travellers Rest Golf Group

Ted Senior, left, winner at
Khao Kheow and Jeff Bunn, right, winner at Emerald and Crystal Bay.
Andy Rich
Pattaya is well known in the golfing world as being
bandit territory: Golfers come to Pattaya from all four corners of the globe
looking for a great time and to play some holiday golf on some of the most
beautiful courses in Thailand. Unfortunately the bandits amongst them don’t
ride into town sporting Stetsons, silver spurs and handlebar moustaches,
which would make them easier to identify. They stroll in as nonchalant as
you like with their dodgy handicaps looking to clear up and sometimes they
do for a while.
I hope all the golf societies in Pattaya are as diligent
as the TRGG in identifying the bandits and weeding them out for the benefit
of the vast majority who are honest upstanding people looking for a fair
competition in which to play their golf.
I shall now get off my soap box and am pleased to
announce that all the people who won our competitions this week are not
bandits but are fine upstanding members of the golfing fraternity.
On Monday 23rd July we paid a visit to Emerald where the
course beat the golfers as no one in the field managed to play to their
handicap. Mr Consistent Jeff Bunn (7) proved to be the best of the rest,
winning with 35 points. Magnus Alvarsson (14) was second with 33 points and
Jim McNeill was third with 32.
Tuesday 24th July saw the group take on Khao Kheow (A and
B courses) and found it in as beautiful condition as always and as tough as
usual.
For the second day running no one bettered their handicap
but Ted Senior (13) was the cream that rose to the top, winning on count
back with 35 points from Richard Talbot (20). On this occasion Jeff Bunn (7)
could only take third place with 34 points.
Just a side note but Richard Talbot is not just a keen
golfer but a more than competent marathon runner and was competing in the
Bangkok Marathon being held on Sunday 29th July, so good luck Richard we
shall be looking out for your progress.
On Thursday 26th July we paid our usual visit to Phoenix
(Mountain/Lakes courses) where that old stager Alun Evans (23) showed the
rest that there is still life in the old dog by taking the honours on count
back with 37 points from Ted Senior (13). Tewin Poopay Lampong stood up for
the ladies by finishing a very respectable third with 35 points.
Saturday 28th July saw the TRGG take on Crystal Bay (A
and B courses) and that man Jeff Bunn (7) took the course apart returning an
amazing 40 points - so I guess that means Jeff is playing off six next week!
It might mean it gives the rest of us a chance but I doubt it, Jeff never
seems to have a bad day like the rest of us mortals.
Following in second was Magnus Alvarsson (14) with an
excellent 38 points and Fergus Brennan obviously got his game back into gear
by taking third place with 36.
Good luck to all you golfing enthusiasts for the coming
week!

Takeshi takes honors and mug
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Martin Todd, left, & Peter
Blackburn.
Peter Blackburn &
Stu Rifkin
Monday, July 23, Mountain
Shadow – Stableford
After a last minute cancellation due to sickness we had a
good field of 18 golfers ready to take our monthly trip to tackle the
challenging Mountain Shadow Golf Course. Assembling at The Growling Swan
prior to departure we welcomed back Stu “Heineken” Rifkin who was returning
after an enforced “lay-up” due to a leg injury. He was thankfully
rejuvenated as was proved by the fact that he was not the last to arrive,
beating Dobbsy by a whisker.

Monthly mug winner Takeshi
Hakozaki.
It was Bon Voyage for yours truly (PB) who is off to
Perth Australia for a couple of weeks but leaving “the show” in the very
capable hands of Mike Gosden, Martin Todd, Stu Rifkin and big Kenny Bernek.
I’m quite sure they will continue to build on the success of our new venue
which is now attracting new players weekly.
Once more with the help of Ken, Bo & Ebrahim with their
vehicles we were able to use just the one minivan & we headed off 5 minutes
ahead of schedule at 8.25 am and arrived at the course 43 minutes later.
Once again the golf course appeared to be very quiet and sure enough we were
able to get our first four-ball away 20 minutes earlier than our booking
time of 10.00 am.
The weather was great with a nice breeze which cooled
things down somewhat and as usual the course was in very good shape with
some of the greens very slick and most having residual sand on them but a
pleasure to play on.
We got round the front nine in just on two hours and
proceeded at a similar pace which enabled us to complete the full round in
the excellent time of four hours. Another very enjoyable day on a testing
course with good company and perfect conditions for golf.
We had just the one flight with five place getters and
also rewards for nearest the pins on all the par threes, with one of them
kindly sponsored by Mike Gosden and also prizes for longest first putts on
the 9th & 18th greens.
Aussie Martin Todd was rewarded for a very steady round
of golf and won the day with a fine 37 points, just one point ahead of yours
truly in second spot. Regular podium finisher Graham Buckingham took third
place with 34 points and Dane Bent Agerbo was fourth with 30 points. A count
back was required to decide fifth place with 2 golfers on 29 points
resulting in Mike Gosden (16 point back nine) shading out Jerry Dobbs (15
point back nine).
1st Martin Todd (8) 37pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (11) 36pts
3rd Graham Buckingham (23) 34pts
4th Bent Agerbo (19) 30pts
5th Mike Gosden (11) 29pts
Near Pins: 5th– Bo Cardwell, 8th – Martin Todd,
15th – Ken Bernek, 17th – Paul Avery
Long Putts: 9th – Wendy Bernek, 18th – Mike Gosden
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with
the worst score on the day) was once again Wendy Bernek who perhaps is
taking time to adjust to the wonderful world of retirement.
Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who of course collected many
donations to charity from our very generous Growling Swan crew. At The
Growling Swan afterwards many stayed and had several beers (and Bundies)
whilst anticipating Thursday’s game which is the second Growling Swan
Monthly Mug at Royal Lakeside.
Thursday, July 26, Royal
Lakeside – Monthly Mug
Twenty five eager beavers assembled at the Growling Swan
to begin the second monthly mug challenge for the honor of winning the
utensil (mug) which would guarantee them the privilege to have it filled
with their favourite beverage by each player.
After boarding our mini buses and cars we arrived (and in
Bo Cardwell’s circumstances landed) at Royal Lakeside safely after about 55
minutes (and in Bo’s case 40 minutes). As is fairly customary on longer
drives we did see the result of yet another accident with a driver slumped
over the steering wheel in a concrete drainage ditch, which never ceases to
surprise one considering the speeds some drivers travel and the close
proximity other drivers come up to the rear of the vehicle in front of them!
The weather was quite blustery and several times the
players in my group (Takeshi, Neil Skilton and Tom Cotton) had to take a
backward step and regroup. As the day progressed (and the beers) so did the
strength of the wind And I was wondering at times if it was the wind or the
Heinekens (no San Mig’s on this course) that were causing the swaying of
myself? Were it not for a 12 on a par four and a 9 on a par five, the
headline of this report would have read “San Mig wins mug” but as Neil so
kindly pointed out, every player has a hard luck story!
There were no hard luck stories for Takeshi Hakozaki
though, as he played superbly considering the 15 minutes of heavy rain and
the very strong winds that all the players had to contend with. His short
game was on fire which really is the focal point of most golf games but
particularly at Royal Lakeside as the greens there can be quite tricky.
The course was in good nick and we had another enjoyable
golf day. After lunch at the club we did not have our customary on-course
presentations but instead headed back to the Growling Swan for the after
game discussions, some icy cold beverages and some great food kindly
provided by our host and Growling Swan owner, Peter Grey. Peter regularly
puts on this free food for the players which is very much appreciated by
all!
Martin Todd assessed all the cards and delivered his
verdict on who won what for the day, with much aplomb and authority even
fining the scribe for interrupting him at one stage!
The field was split into three flights and the Callaway
handicap system was employed for those who are still without an official
handicap. There were also prizes for nearest the pins and longest first
putts on the 9th and the 18th holes.
There were several welcomes and bon voyages to say,
including saying goodbye to Jerry Dobbs, who is returning to work in Oz for
no doubt a short spell, and welcoming Brian Noguer and Nigel Cannon.
Monthly Mug
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) net 70
A Flight
1st Martin Todd (8) net 77
2nd Alain Taddei (18) net 77
3rd Paul Avery (13) net 77

1st Max Bracegirdle (25) net 76
2nd Brian Noguer (21) net 77
3rd Bo Cardwell (22) net 79
4th Aaron Shorten (22) net 81
The Callaway encouragement glass award is given to the
non-handicap player who as defined by the Callaway handicap chart has the
lowest net score. Today’s winner was our only Thai male player Beer.
Near Pins: A3 – Wendy Bernek, A6 – Brian Noguer, B
14 – Max Bracegirdle, B16 – Takeshi Hakozaki
Long Putts: 9th - Paul Avery, 18th - Neil Skilton
Finally the evening was capped by announcing the compass
cap winner, who is asked to donate 50 baht toward a charity collection which
eventually, together with Deefa’s collections, is presented to a children’s
school in Pattaya at the end of the year. The unlucky person and for the
second time in as many weeks was Peter Grey who was awarded the cap with
much enthusiasm from all the other players!
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly
The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at
8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351

Andy wins the medal; Dave shoots round of a lifetime
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Friday winners (from the
left): Andy Butterworth, Bob St Aubin (at the back), Dennis Pelly, Ian Hart
and David Dunstan.
Monday, July 23, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
Well we finally made it back to Khao Kheow after a couple
of week’s absence; today with a small group of seven players. By all
reports, the course has improved although the golf apparently hasn’t, as the
30pts from Martin Kingswood was enough to win today.
For the record we played A & B from the yellow tees and
there were no ‘2’s.
1st Martin Kingswood (13) 30pts
2nd John Stafford (18) 29pts
3rd Brian Holden (6) 28pts
Monday, July 23, Burapha –
Stableford
Twenty golfers turned out for our Monaxday outing at
Burapha to play the B and D courses. Burapha was hosting an amateur
tournament on the Tuesday on the A and B courses and the B course was in
great condition but the D course is still recovering from its recent
renovations and the greens were a little slow.
The day was overcast and cool and with nobody else on the
course a fast pace was set and some good scores recorded as we played both
courses from the white markers.
The top score came in Div A from regular Burapha player,
Pete Stonebridge (13) with 38pts five clear of his nearest rival, Gary Hogg
(7) with 33. In Div B, Andy Makara (26) scored 37pts to win from Greg Hill
and Ivan Plunkett, both playing off 20 and both scoring 35pts.
There were only two ‘2’s, both on hole B8, from Pete
Stonebridge & Robert Barnes.
Div A (0-13)
1st Pete Stonebridge (13) 38pts
2nd Gary Hogg (7) 33pts
3rd Robert Barnes (12) 32pts
Div B (14+)
1st Andy Makara (26) 37pts
2nd Greg Hill (20) 35pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (20) 35pts
Tuesday, July 24, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
Pattaya Country Club was looking pretty good today, with
freshly cut fairways and dry conditions which equated to an easier than
usual course.
Dave Earthrowl stepped up to the challenge to produce one
of his best ever rounds, if not the best, to fire an excellent 82 gross to
amass 48pts off his handicap of 22. He rarely missed a fairway with his long
driving and his approach shots were excellent as was his putting; we
wondered if he would throw out the anchor towards the end but he kept it all
together to the final hole, although he did admit that he was tiring.
Nigel Cannon, who was not far behind him at the turn,
with 22pts to David’s 25, was blown away on the back nine as David parred
the 10th (1st hole from the back
tee), for another four points.
There were no ‘2’s and David will be playing off 18 next
time out with the Outback; great round of golf!
1st David Earthrowl (22) 48pts
2nd Nigel Cannon (22) 38pts
3rd Geoff Moodie (27) 36pts
Wednesday, July 25, The
Emerald – Stableford
With 13 Outbackers at Emerald and another 13 at Siam
Plantation today, it was overall a good turnout for the day, for the time of
year. Although overcast, we stayed dry teeing off twenty minutes early.
The course was in good condition apart from where they
had put some kind of chemical down on the fringe of the greens to kill some
off the rogue grass but this didn’t stop some very good scores coming in.
Welcome back to Arthur Stokes, last here in April and
congratulations to Cottee, who has found a bit of form at last, to win the
day with 38pts, but only on count back from Bob Lindborg. In third was Paul
Greenaway, just back the UK with 37pts and fourth was Bob St. Aubin, also on
37.
Amazingly, there were four ‘2’s; three on hole 7, from
David Day, Bob Lindborg & Bernie Stafford and one on the 15th from Bob St.
Aubin.
1st Wayne Cotterell (13) 38pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (20) 38pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (9) 37pts
4th Bob St. Aubin (14) 37pts
Wednesday, July 25, Siam
Plantation – Stableford
Thirteen players showed up for a day out at Siam
Plantation to play the Pineapple and Sugar Cane (C & A) courses. The day
started out overcast and windy and some gentle rain fell but not a bad day
for golf.
The course was in fantastic condition and although it was
heavily booked in the afternoon, there were very few groups in the morning
and we completed the round in under three and a half hours.
Dennis Pelly invited a couple of friends to play for the
day but had a senior moment by forgetting to put them on the timesheet and
then forgetting Dave (one of them) was still at the Outback and only just
arriving in time for his tee-off. This didn’t affect Jarod or Dave as both
went on to shoot good scores of 40 points and 38 points respectively and run
first and third for the day - well done and check the website for your new
handicaps!
Even though the conditions were tough and in addition we
were well back on the white tees, four players managed to shoot 36 or
better. We had three nearest the pins for the day generously donated by
Billy Gray (2) and Jack Butler (1) and they were won by Jarod Braithwaite,
Joe Mooneyham and Robert Barnes. Joe also won the only ‘2’ of the day with a
great shot on Sugar Cane 3.
1st Jarod Braithwaite (22) 40pts
2nd Steve Poznanski (15) 38pts
3rd Dave Bobson (9) 38pts
4th Billy Gray (28) 36pts
Friday, July 27, Green
Valley – Medal
After the golfing committee’s monthly meeting yesterday
and listening to many of our golfers, we decided, as an experiment, to use
the alternative white tee on the first hole. Particularly in a stroke-play
round, there were those who found the first shot of the day across the
water, a little bit too daunting and could potentially ruin one’s mental
approach to the rest of a medal round.
The interesting thing is, when the statistics were
compared between the 26 players today and the 33 who played in the previous
monthly medal on the 29th June, there wasn’t a great deal of change. The
first hole was still the equal toughest hole on the course (playing average
5.58) and two pars against June’s record (playing average 5.69) and four
pars.
Andy Butterworth, having his first game with us since
back on leave, stepped up to the task today to win the medal with a net 67,
but only beating Bob Lindborg, who had to settle for the Div B win, by a
whisker on count back. Dennis Pelly got the Div A win with a net 70 from
David Dunstan (net 71) who claimed the low gross medal with 76.
Bob St. Aubin, who not only took third place in Div A
with his net 72, also kindly sponsored all four near pin prizes with 250
Baht vouchers for the Outback which were won by David Dunstan (holes 4 &
16), Dennis Pelly (hole 9) and Alex Graham, who we say goodbye to tonight,
on hole 12.
There were five ‘2’s; three on the 12th from Suzi, David
Dunstan & Alex Graham and two on the 16th from Pete Stonebridge & John
O’Keefe,
Monthly Medal
1st Andy Butterworth (13) net 67
Div A (0-14)
1st Dennis Pelly (11) net 70
2nd David Dunstan (5) net 71
3rd Bob St. Aubin (14) net 72
Div B (15+)
1st Bob Lindborg (20) net 67
2nd Ian Hart (18) net 71
3rd Terry Phur (18) net 71

Bartley tops international podium
The Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society

Tuesday’s winners with the
staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
The previous week both Joe Miller and your scribe scored
76 and 78 gross respectively to record 42 points each. Joe’s was on the
Tuesday and mine on the Friday. Strangely enough we were both paired
together in our own four-ball during today’s competition, July 24, and, yes
you guessed, we were both brought back to reality, losing money to our
opponents. Never mind, as an old dog it was nice to have the day.
This week it was John Bartley who played the best with a
fine knock of 37 points to claim first place, with Giorgio Baccioli in
second place on 34 points, beating Tim Mason on count back.
Luckily we also had a hidden pairs comp as well and Tim
was drawn out of the hat to partner John Bartley for both of them to claim
the pairs comp.
Near pins went to Bob Neylon, Giorgio Baccioli and Joe
Miller, and then it was onto the lucky draw for those who had not won
anything.
Our hosts The Relax Bar always donate the lucky draw
prizes it has to be said you could not wish for a nicer venue for the
presentation. Winners of the lucky draw were Stuart Gordon (free massage),
Mike Gerrard (free drink) and Joris Goetschalkx (free drink).
As you may have noticed, the sub-heading shows a new name
for our group - The Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society. This was voted in by
all the existing players after a survey and replaces the old name of the
Phoenix Tuesday Group.
Our main criteria for anyone who would like to join is as
follows: The group is open to all male only players who have an official
handicap of no more than 28. Players who are not members of Phoenix Golf
Club who may wish to join us are very welcome and in the low season their
green fees will be at Sports Day rates (Tuesday 800 baht, Friday 900 Baht).
In the high season guests can enjoy a special green fee rate of 1.000 Baht
as a guest of the members.
Note in the high season we only allow 7 groups to play so
as not to have too much waiting time before and after the game.
For more information regarding golf at Phoenix and sea
fishing, contact me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Robbins bags a brace
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday. July 23,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford
The Mountain Shadow course is not at its best at the
moment, with the fairways surprisingly dry and hard, but the greens are
still in good shape and as always, fast and tricky.

A good week for Tony
Robbins, making a welcome return to form.
As usual everyone struggled to play to their
handicap, and the best performer on the day was Barry Murnin, with a
modest 33 points. Paul Edgar came in second place to take a one point
lead in the Golfer of the Month, but unfortunately (in a remarkable
display of bad timing) he was saying goodbye today, thereby leaving the
way open for rivals Barry Murnin and John Graham. A good lesson learned
Paul – plan your visits a bit better in the future, and make sure you’re
here ‘til the end of the month!
1st Barry Murnin (15) 33pts
2nd Paul Edgar (17) 31pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (15) 30pts
Near pins: PJ Redmond and Paul Edgar
Wednesday, July 25,
Plutuluang W&N – Stableford
We were saying farewell to Richard Baldotto today,
who played one game less than he planned during this visit after being
left behind at the Bowling Green last Friday. Unfortunately Richard
wasn’t able to sign off in style, and only Tony Robbins bettered his
handicap on the day.
It was a slow round today (as often happens here, as
you can usually bet than somewhere ahead there will be a six-ball) and
once again the greens have returned to their normal slow pace, but most
golfers agree it’s still well worth the occasional visit.
Peter Habgood defeated Barry Murnin on the count back
to take second place, whilst Tony Robbins and Gerry Cooney shared the
near pins between the two of them.
1st Tony Robbins (14) 37pts
2nd Peter Habgood (19) 32pts
3rd Barry Murnin (14) 32pts
Near Pins: Gerry Cooney (2) and Tony Robbins

Friday, July 27,
Eastern Star – Stableford
We’re making regular visits to Eastern Star recently
because the course is in good shape, and always presents a good test of
golf. Our aspiring Golfer of the Month got off to a great start today,
putting three balls in the water on the 1st hole!
The course was quiet and the round progressed at a
good pace. For the second game in a row Tony Robbins scored 37 points to
take the honours - those two scores should be good enough to get him
back to his regular handicap - after all the hard work he has put in
bringing it up over the past couple of months.
1st Tony Robbins (14) 37pts
2nd Geoff Williams (18) 36pts
3rd John Graham (10) 35pts
Near Pins: Tony Robbins and Lee Butler(2).
Barry Murnin has taken the lead in the Golfer of the
Month race, inching ahead of the departed Paul Edgar, but with one more
game to play, he’s only one point ahead of John Graham, and can still be
beaten. Should make for an interesting game on Monday!
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between
Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three
times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a
fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not
come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast
and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always
welcome. For more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email

Sorensen signs off in style
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, July 23,Century
Chonburi – Stableford
A Flight (0-22)
1st Jean Morel 36pts
2nd Mike Winfield 34ps
3rd Peter Fagerlund 29pts
B Flight (23+)
1st Torben Sorensen 41pts
2nd Dave Richardson 33pts
3rd Ronnie Ratte 28pts
We set off on time for a course we have not been to for
15 months and arrived in good time to tee-off 20 minutes early under sunny
and breezy conditions. The course on the day was ok considering it has
little cash resources and was judged to be in better condition than Rayong
Country Club. There has been no improvement in the clubhouse however and it
is recommended that you take your own lock if you want to secure belongings
in a locker
All in all it was an enjoyable round of golf for
everybody.
After a round of 4 hours and 20 minutes, back in the
clubhouse we said goodbye to Brian Saaterup and Torben Sorensen.
This is a long course from the white tees but there were
some reasonable scores returned in both flights with Jean Morel taking the A
Flight with 36 points ahead of Mike Winfield in second and Peter Fagerlund
third.
Torben Sorensen took the B Flight with the best score of
the day, 41 points, while Dave Richardson and Ronnie Ratte completed the
podium.
Thursday, July 26,Burapha
– Stableford
1st Jim Carrick (35) 37pts
2nd Phil Sheppard (19) 35pts
3rd Peter Fagerlund (22) 35pts
4th Mike Winfield (22) 33pts
We had a visit to Burapha today, playing the A and D
loops. Check-in was quick and we were off the A1 tee 45 minutes early under
partly cloudy skies with a brisk wind out of the south. We have not played
here in a long time but remember the course always being in tip top
condition as it was today.
Back in the clubhouse, after a very swift round of 3
hours and 45 minutes, Phil Sheppard was welcomed from Sydney and a farewell
was said to Peter Fagerlund returning to Sweden.
Jim Carrick was the winner today with 37 points while
Phil Sheppard took second on a count back over Peter fagerlund, both on 35.

Watson master-class at Pattana
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s winners and B Flight
runner-up George King pose
with ‘The Boss’, a.k.a. Pu.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 24, Pattana
– Stableford
Whether you like this course or not, you have to agree
that if there is a finer clubhouse in the area, we have yet to see it. Mind,
I know we are there to play golf, but set the surroundings and you will
enjoy yourselves.
On this day we had a full house to play it and after our
normal early meet at Bert’s, it was into the transport and ‘up the road’.
The drive up was quite pleasant, especially as I was not driving and we soon
pulled into the imposing Pattana. Also on this day it was relatively quickly
through reception and a quick change saw us on the first tee. The test for
the day was to be the C & A Nines.
It was nice to play the C Nine as we have not played it
for some time and it was in fine condition, if still providing a tough
start. The wind was strong on this day, fine if behind you but difficult to
hit into. The fairways were also in good shape and the rough not too
punishing. However the greens were a bit on the slow side, but they will get
faster.
Into the A Nine and not only did the wind seem to pick
up, but we got a fait bit of rain. But really it was a fine day if you did
not get too wet.
Round over it was into the fine changing room, and then a
search for a place to sit and have a drink. Soft that is. With the
restaurant upstairs closed we went to the little shop by the changing rooms.
Not too bad but a bit basic and try to do the results and you have to go
outside to find a table big enough. It was here as I tabulated results that
I realised that the score card here is the worst of any course if you need
to work with them.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results: In the A
Flight, 0 to 19, we had Bob Watson again showing he knows how the play the
game. Bob won with 39 points, which translates into a gross 73, as the A
Nine has a par 6. We then had a two-way count back on 36 points that saw
Mike O’Brien in second and Brian Parish in third.
In the B Flight, Joel Flor returned to form and won with
39 points. In second was George King with 37 points and in third was Henry
Wong with 34.
Near Pins went to Bob Watson (2), Max Scott and George
King.

Clive & Owen scoop
the spoils at Khao Kheow
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Owen Walkley & Clive Hoseason.
Tuesday, July 24, Pattana
– Stableford
Tuesday was a journey part way up Hwy 331 to play
Pattana, with the C&A combination our test of the day. It’s a par 73 for
this loop with the A course having 1 of the few par 6s in the local area,
really just a longish par 5 from the white tees.
Leading the way on this day was Jeff Wylie (5) with 36
points, followed in by Phil Waite (12) with 35, just edging Clive Hoseason
on count back to the last 6 holes.
Near Pins were shared around between Owen, Phil & Jeff
with 2.
Thursday, July 26, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Khao Kheow A&B was the venue for Thursday’s game, with
the course providing its usual stern, but fair test for all. The course was
in good condition overall, with the greens running true at medium pace.
Clive Hoseason (22) played well in patches to sign for a
solid 33 points, with second spot going to Owen Walkley (12) just one point
behind. Owen relegated Jeff to third on count back over the last 9 holes.
As per the headline, Owen & Clive shared the near pins
between themselves.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside generally plays golf on
Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes make changes to fit in with holidays) with
ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Rodney Nabbe & Paul Taylor take the medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, July 23, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Terry Hodgkiss (22) 38pts
2nd Graham Davis (8) 36pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (17) 34pts
4th Frank McGowan (16) 32pts
5th Al Rolnik (18) 29pts
A very good week at three of the local courses, where the
green fee costs are as much as half as expensive than some others in the
area, started off at Pete Dye designed Khao Kheow layout from the yellow
tees over the A an B courses where the recent renovation work has almost
been completed, leaving the course in much better shape than before.

Rodney Nabbe.
Terry Hodgkiss continued his progress with the flat stick
with another day without a three-putt, which enabled him to take his second
podium placing in as many weeks but this time rising to the top step after a
two under return for the day.
Graham Davis slipped into second place with another solid
round that could have been so much better if a few more of those putts had
not wandered off course.
Shuichi Kodaka, whose handicap is slowly rising once
again towards the level at which he will inevitably win one, was nearly
there today with a solid round of equal nine which was sufficient to take
third place.
Frank McGowan was left ruing a poor finish with just
three points scored over the last three holes as he took fourth place ahead
of Al Rolnik, who has just returned after several weeks away while he has
been mentoring one of his grandsons in both America and Thailand, no doubt
recapturing some years of his own youth along the way.

Paul Taylor.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Graham Davis
had the sole one in the first division to sweep the rollover pot.
Before the presentations there was a welcome for Barry La
Cerf together with welcome backs for Al Rolnik, Paul Hartley and Joe Peters.
Wednesday, July 25,
Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phillip Cass (23) 34pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (17) 34pts
3rd Graham Davis (8) 33pts
4th Frank McGowan (16) 32pts
5th Alwyne Burley (18) 32pts
Although the management seems to have the pricing of the
green fees sorted out, the cost of taking a golf cart has doubled here -
costing another 300 baht as the course has also moved to single players in a
cart ruling. There also seems to be a further conspiracy against sharing as
the cost of sharing a beer with ones fellow players after the game has
increased dramatically to be one of the dearest in the area, with a small
Heineken costing 100 baht and a small Singha 90 baht.

Phillip Cass.
Another worrisome development at the course is the
behavior of the monkeys, who used to be one of the attractions for many
visitors in the past, but have now become very aggressive, scaring away the
caddies left guarding the carts and their contents and even threatening
players armed with a club when they attempt to retrieve lost items.
After all that said, the course is still one of the best
in the area, offering a stern challenge to every level of handicapper and on
this day with the white tees set back nearer to the blacks than the standard
measured length it proved to be so yet again.
Phillip Cass took his first win out of The Haven in such
a long time he could not remember when it was, with a steady round that owed
much to a five-pointer on the par five eleventh hole with a birdie and two
strokes on the hole which enabled him to amass 21 points on the back nine,
and enabling him to win a count back over Shuichi Kodak who could manage
just 17, after he had returned another equal nines card for second place.

Terry Hodgkiss.
Graham Davis had another one of those “If only days” as
the putts continued to track their way round and past the hole on a regular
basis and so he once again a little disappointed in third spot.
Frank McGowan took fourth place for the second outing
running as he won a count back over Alwyne Burley with a better 17 to 14
after Alwyne had started well but faded at the end.
Very unusually there was a second five-pointer scored on
the day as Rick Holmes birdied the stroke index one par four sixth hole,
again with two strokes of handicap following his recent injury review, to
record his first ever net albatross, as he has never previously had two
shots on a hole.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the presentations Phillip Cass was welcomed
back.
Friday, July 27, Phoenix -
Monthly Medals
Division 1 (0-15) Blue tees
CSS 77 NC
1st Rodney Nabbe (11) net 78
2nd Graham Davis (8) net 81
No other finishers
Division 2 (16+) White tees
CSS 72
1st Paul Taylor (20) net 74
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (22) net 78
3rd Joe Peters (18) net 78
4th Frank McGowan (16) net 78
The third course of the week was yet another great one,
with the greens as usual in first class condition and the fairways, even
following heavy overnight rain, recovered well enough so that the ‘lift and
place’ local rule that had been expected prior to the departure did not have
to be put into effect.
As usual the first division was played from the blue
tees, but many happenings around the course left the finishers at just two,
as the rest of the field either did not complete the course or no returned
almost at the outset, leaving a very surprised Rodney Nabbe to clasp his
first Monthly Medal and gain entry into the Gold and Silvers, although he
may well not be able attend due to work commitments. He became the eighth
different player to win in the first division in eight months.
Graham Davis was once again - and for the last time this
trip - left in the bridesmaid’s position and as ever, those final strokes on
the greens refused to drop.
Paul Taylor, another player slowly coming back to golf
after a long spell of injury and also having had a injury review of
handicap, had an excellent day to finish at two over par to win his first
Monthly Medal in the second division and claim his place in the end of the
year playoffs.
Terry Hodgkiss won a three-way count back over Joe Peters
and Fran McGowan, taking second spot by winning with a net 37 as Joe finally
got the better of Frank with 39 to 40 net leaving them in third and fourth
respectively.
It was interesting to note following the previous venues
bar prices, that the prices of the beers and other items had been
significantly reduced here, with a liter of draught Heineken costing just
160 baht, which is a big step in the right direction and hopefully a sign
for the future.
In line with the difficulty of the day there were no 2’s
in either division again.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for Mark
Campbell.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at
185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Steady stuff from Duckett
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Emerald on Monday,
23rd July, to play a stableford competition on the course which was
reasonably prepared but with greens recovering from coring and dressing.
Thus the back nine greens, most recently treated, were slower and less
consistent than the front nine. Nevertheless the course as always provided
the challenge needed to start the golfing week with PGS.
Sharing third place again were Dave Edwards and Mr Len,
both recording 34 points, just one behind runner-up Wichai Tananusorn, on
35. The winner was Alan Duckett with a consistent 37 points, never a bad
score on the course which demands a greater share of good luck than any
other.
Masa Takano recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day on
the short fifteenth and the Booby Bevy went to Rabbi for his six attempts to
escape a greenside bunker on the fourth.
The Boss’s free beer draw was won by lady golfer Wan
Meeraka.
Masa beats tough Bangpra
On Wednesday, 25th July, the Pattaya Golf Society visited
the excellent Bangpra club to play a medal round on the challenging course
with white tees well back to allow for tee box maintenance and greens
advising a speed of 9 but probably exceeding that by at least two points on
Mr Stimp’s box of tricks.
An early start awaited the group and they found that
everyone had teed off on time. Throughout it stayed overcast and conditions
were perfect aside from a stiff breeze which remained with the group all
day.
After a long and almost golf-free stay in UK, Wichai
Tananusorn showed he was finding his game again with a net 78 in third
place, a few behind the consistent Dave Edwards who again came second with
net 75. The winner was Masanori Takano, the very steady Japanese PGS
regular, who carded a fine net 71 off his handicap of seven.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to
Kerry Jonsson for his mishit practice swing on the first which dribbled the
ball across the cart path leading to his second shot from the assembled
gallery.
Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Gary Bolger, on his
first game back after a long stay in Australia. Welcome home Gary!
Consistency the key for Edwards
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Phoenix on Friday, 27th
July to play a stableford competition on the Mountain and Lakes nines. The
course was in relatively good condition with moderately paced greens but as
usual at Phoenix the pace of play was pedestrian. The signs are there, and
so are the marshalls, but none appear to be working.
Those weathering the interminable delays included third
placed Robbie Taylor who recorded 33 points, and joint winners Masashi
Iizumi and Dave Edwards who returned 35 points each. Once again no birdie
‘2’s were recorded and the Boss’s free beer draw was won by Paul Brett.

Noppakao overcomes setback to put
on strong showing at 29er Worlds

Thomas are seen in action at the 29er World Championships in Travemuende,
northern Germany. (Photo/Malee Whitcraft)
Young Thai sailing sensation Noppakao Poonpat may not
have earned a medal at the 29er World Championships in Travemuende in
northern Germany last weekend, but she proved she is a talent to be watched
in international sailing circles.
Noppakao, now 17, stunned the world when she won the IODA
Optimist World Championships in Malaysia in 2010. Last weekend, all eyes
were on her as well she finished the qualification rounds of this year’s
29er Worlds in first place, one point ahead of 2012 ISAF Youth Sailing World
champions Carlos Robles and Florian Trittel of Spain. Robles and Trittel
have extensive experience on the water together whereas Noppakao entered the
regatta with only two hours training with Australian crew Steven Thomas and
limited experience in the 29er skiff, making her performance even more
impressive.
Unfortunately, in the first race of the finals, a
disqualification set the Thai team back to 13th position. Disheartened but
not defeated, the duo fought back, with two firsts and a second in following
races offset with mixed results in higher winds. This allowed Robles and
Trittel to slip into first position due to their more consistent results in
the final races. Poonpat and Thomas finished 4th overall, just one point
behind Argentina’s Mateo Majdalani and Klaus Lange. In second place were
France’s Lucas Rual and Kevin Fischer.

Don and Dylan Whitcraft
placed 4th place in the 29er Silver Fleet. (Photo/Malee Whitcraft)
In an interview with race organizers, the new 29er world
champions admitted they were surprised with Noppakao’s strong performance.
“When the wind was weak, she made the most of her weight
advantage, but when there were stronger winds, she had some difficulties,”
said Trittel.
As organizers noted, competition among the top ten was
intense, one mistake enough to reconfigure results in the last few days.
While Noppakao’s natural talent on the water has played a
role in her performance, team leader Malee Whitcraft says weather helped
too.
“The light wind and warm weather in Germany helped her
concentrate after she suffered from the cold, strong wind and rain which
affected her performance in the ISAF Youth Worlds in Dublin at the beginning
of July where she came 12th in the 420 class.”
Thai brothers Don, 17, and Dylan Whitcraft, 15, meanwhile
failed by one point to make the gold fleet at the 29er Worlds but finished
in 4th place in the Silver Fleet. Impressive, given the two boys have no
competition in Thailand and there were a total of 217 boats from 24
countries competing in this year’s 29er Worlds.

Youth Worlds. (Photo/Malee Whitcraft)
Thai team hampered by ‘miserable’ weather conditions in
Ireland
At the ISAF Worlds in Dublin, Ireland, the Thai team was
expected to be in medal contention, but conditions proved difficult for the
warm-blooded boys and girls with strong winds, cold rain and temperatures of
11-18 degrees.
Noppakao sailed with Panida Suksomporn, 17, in the 420
class, to which she is also new. They achieved some great results with first
and second finishes but consistency was lacking.
Laser Radial national champion Kamolwan Chanyim, 16, had
the best result, finishing in 7th position out of 42 sailors after some
tough battles on the water for 4th place, which she achieved at the same
regatta in 2010.
Female windsurfer Siripon Kaewduang-Ngam, 17, who holds a
silver medal from the 2011 regatta in Croatia, finished in 8th place out of
23 sailors. She is still recovering from an injury from the Asian Games and
had to readjust to sailing the RS:X after months of training on the Techno
board which is quite different.
Sailing in the Boy’s Laser Radial, Supakon Pongwichean,
17, who holds a silver from his second place finish in the Laser 4.7 World
Championships in Pattaya in 2010, was unfortunately disqualified from one
race and unable to overcome the penalty because of the cold weather. He
finished 37th out of 58 sailors.
In the Boy’s Two Person Dinghy, the 420, Sittisart
Ponpun, 17, and crew Peerapol Wisaka, 17, finished in 23rd in a fleet of 30.
In the Open Skiff class, the 29er, the Whitcraft brothers finished 21st out
of 24.
Accompanying them as coaches were former Dart 18 world
champion, Gareth Owen of the UK, who is now based in Pattaya, Thailand, and
windsurfing’s Deshopol Phuangukoolnont, with Malee Whitcraft as Team Leader.
The prestigious championship is open only to sailors 19
and under, and is viewed in the international sailing community as a
showcase for future sailing stars. Among past winners are America Cup
skippers Chris Dickson and Russell Coutts of New Zealand as well as Olympic
medalists Ben Ainslie of Great Britain and Robert Scheidt of Brazil.
Thailand earned its first medal at the event in Turkey in
2010 when then 17 year old Keerati Bualong won the silver in the Laser
Radial class. He has since become the first Thai to qualify for the Olympics
under current qualification rules in the one man dinghy class, the Laser
Standard, with racing starting on Monday, July 30.

Great wind and exciting sailing a fitting finale to 2012 Phuket Raceweek

Jing Jing, right, won IRC
Racing I at 2012 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. (Photo byMia Gillow/ Cape
Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek)
The best was saved for last as the final day of the 2012
Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, July 22, saw 10-12 knots of breeze gusting
to 15, and some spectacular competition around the southern islands of
Phuket, which brought to an end an exciting and successful week.
Two races – a windward/leeward and an islands course –
for all except the Classics was the decision by Race Officer Simon James for
the Cape Panwa Hotel Race Day, and the fresh breeze delivered some great
sailing, and surprises to the results table.
Jing Jing (Rick Pointon) went into the last day with a
clear lead in IRC Racing I and IRC Overall classes, and looked unlikely to
give it up. In the stronger winds, the all-new Aquila Reichel Pugh 45 Katsu
(Ben Copley) performed well and put in solid last day performance scoring
two firsts, pulling them up the leader-board into second overall in IRC
Racing I. Despite a 2, 3 on the day Jing Jing won both IRC Racing I and IRC
Overall comfortably. Wan Marang (Kevin Whitcraft) finished third overall in
IRC Racing I.
In the Sportsboats class, racing went down to the wire,
the winner being decided on the final race. A first in Race 1 left the
Phuket 8 Surf Patrol (Ray Waldron) in a strong position, however, on the
longer course Race 2 they were beaten by the Welbourn 25 Brace! Brace!!
Brace!!! (Paul Murphy), with its Dynamic Stability System. But that was not
enough to knock them off the top spot and Surf Patrol won the series by two
points with Brace! Brace!! Brace!!! in second and Longitude (Rolf Heemskerk)
third.
Skandia Endeavour of Whitby (Stuart Williamson) and
Phoenix (Niels Degenkolw) started the day tied on points with all to play
for in IRC Racing II. However, surprises were yet to come. Skandia Endeavour
of Whitby won the first race but placed fifth in the last race, letting Ruby
Tuesday (John Vause) in with two second places today, enough to take the
title by a single point. Phoenix were third overall.
Two points separated the top three in IRC Cruising going
into the last two races today and all was set for a climatic encounter. A
collision at the pin-end of the startline between Jenzminc VI (Andy Brennan)
and Dreamtime (Rob Azzopardi) added to the intensity. Sail in Asia (Mike
Downard) won line honours and the win on corrected time in Race 1, and held
on to beat Remington (Jim Ellis) buy one minute on corrected time in Race 2
to win the series by two points. Remington were second overall and Dreamtime
third.
In the Firefly One-Design class Voodoo (Hans Rahmann) had
already wrapped up the title on Saturday with a masterclass of multihull
sailing. They went on to score another first Sunday to underscore their
superiority. Moto Inzi (Roger Kingdon) scored a 4,1 to finish second overall
with Twin Sharks (John Newnham) in third.
The Andaman Cabriolet catamaran DaVinci (Mark Pescott)
had already won the Multihull Racing title the previous day with an
unbeatable run of first places, and today continued their impressive form
with two more wins, making it eight from eight. Add to that five from five
at the Phuket Multihull Regatta two weeks ago and DaVinci are 13 races
undefeated. The other Andaman Cabriolet design, Nina (Rob Cullen), finished
second overall ahead of Sweet Chariot (Henry Kaye), who enjoyed today’s
stronger winds, in third.
In the Classic class, the top two were tied on points and
all could be lost (or gained) on the final race. McBob The Boat (Joe Gruba)
threw away their chance by finishing fourth, leaving the door open for
Sirius (Simon Morris) who won today and topped the series with 4 points.
34 entries and over 500 participants from around the
world took part in the 2012 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek. Final prizes
were presented by at a lavish beachside party at the Cape Panwa Hotel.

Watson walks it at the Valley
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday, July 23, Green
Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Bob Watson (3) 42pts
2nd Grant Cadell (16) 41pts
3rd Andy Crabb (20) 40pts
4th Nick Handscombe (12) 40pts
Once more, everyone was raving about the condition of
Green Valley. From tee to green, this course is in the best nick it has been
for a long time and now is the time to enjoy one of the best courses we have
here in Pattaya. A full signup sheet of 28 golfers made for a tight
competition and some good scoring today. All the podium places were in the
40’s, that’s how good the game was out there this Monday.

Siam Old Course winner Jeff
Calrow with daughter Alice.
Bob Watson is a steady golfer, and with a 2.7 handicap he
has to earn his points. Bob made it look easy and won the comp with 42
Stableford points, but in fact he had a late charge and birdied the last 3
holes for a well fought victory. Well played mate, nice finish - you pulled
that one out of your Footjoys!
Grant Cadell also had great round with a big 41 circled
at the top of his card to claim 2nd place. Grant had a
birdie on the last, but it was the blob on the unlucky 13th
that did him in. Andy Crabb and Nick Handscombe both had 40 points, but Andy
took 20 points on the back to win by count back over Nick’s 19 on the back.
That’s some damn good golf guys!
In August we are having a 2-day Eclectic at Green Valley
on the 20th-21st so sign up soon
as space is limited.
Tuesday, July 24, Siam Old
Course (White tees) – Stableford
1st Jeff Calrow (12) 38pts
2nd John Emmerson (10) 36pts
3rd Phil Page (10) 35pts
4th Nick Handscombe (12) 35pts
The treat for today was The Old Course at Siam, arguably
the best golf course in town. Membership here is around 250,000 baht with
annual subs of 27,500 so when you throw around that kind of money, you get
an amazing golf course which is always immaculate.
A lot of the TGC regulars are members here so it was a
strong comp with lots of laughs on this Schmidt-Curley track. We had perfect
weather once again with a slight overcast and a whippy 15-20 mph wind just
to make things interesting.

John Emmerson thanks Grant
Cadell, Bob Watson & Nick Handscombe.
Jeff Calrow had a bit of a slow start with 17 Stableford
points going out. Being the mentally tough golfer that he is, that did not
deter him and Jeff turned it all around on the back nine (just like Els,
eh?) and sashayed his way to the clubhouse with 21 on the back nine. Father
of 3 girls, Samui smoothy Calrow took the gold medal for today’s great round
so well played to ya geezah!
Fellow members John Emmerson with 36 and Phil Page a shot
behind on 35 took a member’s 1-2-3 with guest Nicky Handscombe in at 4th
once again losing on count back with 19 for the second day in a row! Jeez
Nicky, what are the odds mate? At least he bested the 3 other 4-balls for a
free meal in the clubhouse.
We will be playing here or Plantation once a month for
the rest of the low season, so get out and join us next time! Sure, it’s
more pricey (2,550 baht all in) than lots of other good courses in Pattaya,
but don’t you deserve to treat yourself once in a while?
Thursday, July 26,
Greenwood A & C (White tees) – Stableford
1st Sonny Goldsbury (14) 42pts
2nd Larry Immethun (7) 38pts
3rd Steve Lodge (10) 35pts
Is this course the best deal in town? At only 850 baht
for green fee and caddy, it is hard to beat. Far improved from the old Noble
Place, Greenwood is a Pattaya gem with 27 beautiful holes of golf. The “C”
course is one of the best 9-hole layouts in Thailand and we were lucky
enough to play it today.
It had been a strange week weather wise so we were not
sure of what to expect when we got to the course. The clouds looked ominous
as we left town for the 331 but as it turned out, it was a nice cool day for
golf. 20 golfers were in the comp, and only the last group got wet on the 18th
hole, that’s pretty darn good timing.
Sonny Goldsbury towered above the field (not easy for
him) with 42 points, simple as that. Our Maori mate also played host for the
day and showed the lads how to handle the links of Greenwood.
Larry Immethun played a great front nine with 20 points
but couldn’t improve on the back. He still took 2nd
with a fine 38 but was 4 shots out, and finally Steve Lodge took 3rd
with 35 Stableford points.
Thanks to all who chose to join in with us for this
weeks’ golf from The Golf Club.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We
play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day
out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golf clubpattaya.com and

Slota stays in form
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday’s division winners:
Chris Slota and Lindsay Phillips.
Monday, July 23, Pattana –
Stableford
We were on the A and B courses today and the split in the
divisions was 8-20 and 21plus. For the majority of the times we play here it
is overcast with rolling clouds in the distance. We teed-off today just
ahead of our 10.00 am start time and there were some reasonable points
coming in after nine holes, and eventually 40 points won division 1 for
Lindsay Phillips. Russell Gilroy took second after beating Ian Speirs on n
18/17 back-nine count back after they both came in with 36 points each.
Chris Slota topped division 2 with 38 points, Mark
Armstrong was second one point behind, and Roar Berger took third with 34.
Near pins went to Anders Hansson (2), Lindsay Phillips,
Chris Voller, Rod Howett and Burnie Sinclair.
In the ‘2’s in division 1, Russell Gilroy, Anders Hansson
and Chris Voller split the pot while in division 2 there were two rollovers
to Greenwood on Wednesday.
Wednesday, July 25,
Greenwood - Stableford
Another gloomy day as we arrived with threatening clouds
in the distance, but this caused no problems today and for the first time in
many months we were allocated the C course, with the A on the back nine. The
C has always been a good test of golf and this showed in the scores today.
Scoring 15 on the front nine and 23 on the back, our
ex-London black cabbie won division 1 with 38 points ahead of Neville
Scurrell in second on 36 and Russell Gilroy, in his last round before his
departure to Oz, third with 35.
Lee Casey won division 2 with 36 points and with 11
points on the front nine and 24 on the back, Roar Berger took second with 35
ahead of Chris Slota, Monday’s winner, in third with 34.
Russell birdied C6 for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and
there were now three rollovers to Emerald in division 2 till the following
Monday.
Near pin prizes were claimed by Mike Chatt, Russell
Gilroy, Lindsay Phillips, Ian Speirs, Lee Casey, Paul Hobson and Chris
Slota.
It was congratulations all round for ‘Miss Chevrolet’
alias Kung Maliporn the Burapha caddie who won the Singha Pattaya Amateur
Ladies Championship at Burapha today. Her other half, Andy Baber, was over
the moon as the car arrived with Singha trophies, golf bags, shoes and an
all expenses paid trip to Koh Samui in the new year. Well done Kung.
After Rod Howett’s laser operation on his eye’s we all
wish him a speedy recovery.
Friday, July 27, Eastern
Star - Stableford
After a few cancellations overnight and early morning,
for various reasons, the groupings were made on the way to the course and
once there we had to make still a few more adjustments on the first tee and
in the end we went out with 6 four-balls.
There had been two hours of rain in Jomtien the previous
evening but asking a few of our players who live on the course, they assured
us that the course was dry and it promised to be a good day for all.
A slightly lower cut in the divisions today and it was
8-16 in the top flight and 17 plus in division 2.
Still in form and winning division 2 today with 40 points
was Chris Slota, ahead of Paul Hobson who was having his last game with us
in second with 34, and Joe Kubon in third with 31.
Marty Rock topped the podium in division 1 with 39 points
while always in the reckoning, Chris Voller took second place two points
behind and Mike Missler came home third with 34.
Playing off 8, Steve Armstrong birdied the 13th to secure
the only ‘2’ in division 1 with a rollover as well and in division 2 there
will be two till next Friday.
Near pins went to Mike Misler, Marty Rock (2), Curtiss
Hessler and Bryan Rought.

Siriwong saves the day for United

28. (Photo/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United slipped worryingly closer to the
relegation zone after failing to secure victories over either TTM Chiangmai
or Chiangrai United in games at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya last week,
Following a midweek 2-2 draw with bottom club Chiangmai,
United came out to face a resurgent Chiangrai team for last Saturday’s
weekend fixture at a rain-swept stadium, with spectators seeking whatever
shelter they could find from the downpour on the exposed terraces.
The visitors took a first half lead through a breakaway
goal after United had seen their own goal bound effort cleared off the line.
Chiangrai’s Brazilian midfielder Leandro led the charge downfield before
slipping a through ball to Issawa Singthong who fired past Narit for the
opening goal.
United hit back strongly, with Siriwong long range effort
skimming the visitors’ crossbar and O.J. Obatola was unlucky to see his
superb right foot strike ruled out for an earlier infringement, but the
score remained 0-1 at the break.
The home team finally found a foothold back in the match
early in the second half when the returning Ludovick headed in from close
range, however United would fall behind again soon after when Tansopa fired
in a low shot from the edge of the box that flew under Narit’s dive and into
the Pattaya net.
It looked to be an uphill task for United to come back a
second time, especially after a flying save by the Chiangrai keeper denied
Wongdee, but with the clock ticking down to fulltime, up stepped club
captain Siriwong to save the day with a real pile-driver of a free kick from
fully 20 yards out that hit the back of the net off the underside of the
crossbar.
Despite the late fightback, two points from two home
games was less than what was required by Pattaya as they are now just three
points above the relegation dog-fight. United’s next match is a must win
away fixture on Sunday, August 5 at second bottom Police United.

Fortt triumphs again to
consolidate lead in championship

Ben Fortt, second right,
poses on the starting grid with the brolly girls and Tingnote Titipong, far
right, the 2010 Thailand champion.
Local racer Ben Fortt, based out of The Caddyshack Pub,
Pattaya went up country last weekend for the 4th race
of the superbike 1000cc SB-2 championship and once again puts himself on
pole position with the fastest qualifying lap of 1.25.6 at Thailand
International racing Circuit.
The weather was looking extremely threatening and with
the possibility of a wet race, the pit crew were poised and ready with the
wet tyre set. However, thankfully the rain held off and there was a dry
race.
Fortt got off the start well and put in some superb first
and second laps to give himself a comfortable lead at the front of the pack,
where he stayed for the remainder of the race unchallenged and 20 seconds
ahead of his nearest rival.
The win puts Fortt firmly at the top of and pulling clear
in the SB-2 Thai championship points table. Ben remarked after the race that
he was delighted with his performance and was surprised that he won by such
a big margin.
“I owe much of my success to my team who work so hard to
get the bike set up to this standard,” he said afterwards. “This season I
switched from Suzuki to Honda and the expertise of Panadda Racing Team who I
ride for is defiantly a big part of my progress. I would like to say a
special thank you to my sponsors CEA cranes and Equipment Asia for their big
part in supporting me from day one of my racing career which means a lot to
me.”
The next round of the championship will be at the Bira
circuit on August 25-26. Come along to cheer Ben on – he races with the
number 40 on his back.
