Jack the surprise winner of Birthday Cup

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, July 9, Burapha - Stableford

The start of a new week, kicked off with a joint Birthday Cup (hosted by Peter & Rosco) here at Burapha on the A & B loops; no respite for the 36 participants, the long blue tees nominated as the tee of the day. The course was generally in good shape with near perfect greens but the long tufty areas of grass around some of the green-side bunkers seems a little harsh on us mere amateurs.

Alex Graham, left, and Adam Oyston.

At last it was time for the ‘General’ to demonstrate that he could still play this game called golf and albeit that his handicap has drifted out to incredible 20, he put a round together today playing to 13 to score a massive 43pts to comfortably win the day by four and to see his handicap reduced by 2.

One of the Birthday boys, Pete Stonebridge, had the next best score (39) to win Div B from Wayne Cotterill (38) and the other Birthday Boy, Rosco, was runner-up in Div A; scoring 38pts to Barnsey’s 39. In Div C the average scoring was somewhat lower, maybe some reflection on the very long holes with some of the blue tee boxes pushed right back but the winner was course specialist, Bob Lindborg who plotted his way round for his 34pts, winning from On Lloyd (32) and three more tied up on 30.

Back at the Outback, the co-sponsors provided all the players with a barbecue as well as special prizes for the four near pins; vouchers for Peter’s Classroom Bar in Pattayaland 2 and Rosco’s Good Everything Bar (opp. Soi Honey in 2nd Road) added three dozen Titleist NXT balls to the mix.

Thanks for day Pete & Rosco and Happy Birthday to you both!

Tuesday, July 10, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

So what’s going on? The General’s out again and tucking another win under his belt as just eight players competed at PCC today. It wasn’t a massive score (only 32pts) but a win is a win; Jack beating Jim Payne on count back.

Rosco & Peter, left, with Suzi, Bob Lindborg, Barnsey and Jack, the overall winner, relax after Monday’s round at Burapha.

It was tough playing here today, particularly as many of us played at Burapha yesterday and one could hardly compare the two courses; here the ball can get some terrible lies even on the fairways and the greens are generally on the slow side – except the second.

Finally, welcome back to Eddie O’Neill.

There were a couple of ‘2’s from Nigel Cannon & Geoff Moodie.

1st Jack Moseley (18) 32pts

2nd Jim Payne (26) 32pts

Tuesday, July 10, Laem Chabang – Stableford

10 Outbackers (only 8 in the comp.) played at Laem Chabang on Mountain and Valley (A & B) on a day that started with a delay due to rain and ended in brilliant sunshine. The course itself was in great condition and has been set up great for the Singha sponsored (ATGT) Tournament, when the Outback will have a team playing in the Pro-Am on Wednesday (18th).

We played from the white tees and the markers were all on the correct ones for a change but it’s still not long at 6100yds. Carts were not allowed on the fairways and some (fairways) were a little soggy underfoot so we played ‘lift clean and place’ but most of the fairways were good and the bunkers were in great condition. The greens were superb, fast and true.

Pace of play was slow as a five-ball held up the whole field and even the marshalls were reluctant to move them along as one of the owners was part of the group.

Steve Mann had his best round in Thailand with 74 gross for 43 points and only just won the day from Martin Kingswood who had 42 points and continues to be the big improver over the last twelve months. Martin is now down to a 13 handicap and is playing great golf.

There were three ‘2’s from Steve Mann & Martin Kingswood (14th hole) and Barnsey (17th).

1st Steve Mann (9) 43pts

2nd Martin Kingswood (14) 42pts

Wednesday, July 11, Siam Plantation – Stableford

This treasure of a course is on the doorstep of the Outback and it’s a pleasure to play here at the Sport Day rate of 2350 Baht, which includes your caddie and compulsory cart. One of the best nines in the area would have to be Sugarcane (A) which we were fortunate to play as our back nine having started on Tapioca (B).

There was a slight delay at the start as a couple of lads were held up by the police right outside the course having to wait for the VIP procession to pass, however the course was not busy and the delay did not affect any other groups.

If there is one thing that spoils the course, it has to be the cart path only rule for the carts; so your ball is right over the other side of the fairway and your caddie comes across with the wrong clubs, it’s not her fault, she’s doing her best – so you make do with what she’s brought or do you send her back?

Apart from that, everything is immaculate and I guess that’s what you pay for and overall it has to be worth it. The Outback is here every Wednesday (except Weds 29th Aug. on Hua Hin trip) until the end of the low season, which is September at Plantation, you’re welcome to join us.

Big Steve Poznanski started the day with a massive drive which he pulled left into the red grass hazard only about 100 yards from the hole; unable to find his ball, he took his penalty drop and hit a wedge onto the green some 50 feet from the hole. He then sank this long curling putt and walked off with a par and one up in the match. Hmmm.

Steve the wiped the next, parred the third and wiped the next – but that’s how it is with him. He ended up with 36pts, enough to win the day from Alex Graham (33pts) and welcome back Alex & Peter, with Suzi in third on 30.

There were no ‘2’s.

1st Steve Poznanski (15) 36pts

2nd Alex Graham (8) 33pts

3rd Suzi Lawton (17) 30pts

Wednesday, July 11, Treasure Hill – Stabelford

11 golfers travelled to Treasure Hill for the day and the course was lightly booked but our groups were still held up by a three-ball that found a lot of trouble around the course.

The course unfortunately was not at its best as some fairways and greens had not been cut and a couple of greens had just been sanded. Like a lot of the “B” courses they don’t seem to be able to keep up a proper maintenance programme and the course suffers and so do the golfers.

The tees have all been upgraded over the last twelve months and are by far the best part of the course at present; the greens overall suffered as some were good because they had been cut, some hadn’t and some were sanded. The course itself is tough, a great test for any golfer and has some very experienced and good caddies but needs to be better maintained.

The day was hot to start with and got hotter when the thunderstorms built up, then got cooler as the clouds came over but luckily the storms all went around us and we completed our round without getting wet.

The winner for the day was Adam Oyston with 35 points off his 16 handicap; Adam had 12 points on the front and 23 on the back which was great golf and a good recovery. Second was Dale Shier (welcome back) who had a consistent round that netted 34 points off his 13 handicap and third was John Player with 33 points.

There were four ‘2’s from Eddie Beilby & Tim Knight (13th) & Steve Mann & Adam Oyston (17th).

1st Adam Oyston (16) 35pts

2nd Dale Shier (13) 34pts

3rd John Player (20) 33pts

Friday, July 13, Green Valley – Stableford

26 Outbackers here, for the second week of our earlier 9.30 starts. Pete Stonebridge had the best score of the day (39pts) to win Div A by three from four players all on 36pts; David Dunstan, Robert Barnes, Joe Mooneyham and Ian Heddle.

Bob Lindborg won Div B with 37pts from another three with 36pts; namely Barry McIntosh, Rob Earle and Adam Oyston.

There were three ‘2’s from David Dunstan, Ian Heddle & Robert Barnes.

Div A (0-15)

1st Pete Stonebridge (14) 39pts

2nd David Dunstan (5) 36pts

3rd Robert Barnes (12) 36pts

Div B (15+)

1st Bob Lindborg (21) 37pts

2nd Barry McIntosh (21) 36pts

3rd Rob Earle (23) 36pts

Best Aggregate Scores: Front Nine: 21pts - Ian Heddle, Adam Oyston; Back Nine: 21pts - David Dunstan; Par 5’s: 13pts - Robert Barnes; Par 4’s: 24pts - Bob Lindborg; Par 3’s: 10pts - Joe Mooneyham, Adam Oyston, Robert Barnes; Most Holes Under Par: 3 - Robert Barnes, David Dunstan

Tuesday’s best of the bunch – the top 2 in each flight.

Derek Brook

Tuesday, July 10, Bangpra – Stableford

Been here a long time has this course, and they still have those damn monkeys. Of late they have not been around but on this day they were thick on the ground. As we came up to the green on the 4th a big male came across and made two mock attacks on the caddies and we had to go across and defend the girls until it went up a tree muttering away to itself.

Then later in the round we had a really big troop go all around us and one of the things that was noticeable was the large number of very small babies on their mother’s back. Little things they were, the babies, although the big males seemed quite content. Wonder if that is why the first big male was so ratty? He was on his own.

Whilst we are on a nature walk, for the first time we saw more than one of those big lizards. I assume they are monitor lizards, even water monitor lizards, and we saw the first one on the par five, probably the 15th, in the water, before the green. That would have made our day, however as we went up the 16th and approached the green a very large one, maybe 4 or 5 feet, walked across the fairway behind us and reared up, it then went back into the small lake between the 16th and 17th.

Friday winners and new face Ian Smith with two of Bert’s finest.

Having teed off on the 17th a few of us walked over to the lake and saw two or three small ones, couple of feet long, on the bank and the big one swam to the small island in the middle. Wonder if they are hungry as I know one monkey who could do with a swim there. Pity I did not have my camera.

Anyway, back to the golf. It was a fine day as we teed off the first, maybe a bit cloudy but all looked fine. As is normal here, the course was in fine condition, with the fairways nice and green and the putting areas fast and tricky. The rough was as is normal except for the wild life, and we pottered on quite well.

We had a bit of a strong breeze but it was not excessively blustery and the day all in all turned out to be a fine walk in the ‘Animal Park’. We were soon around, the course being a bit empty, and were soon into the fine changing rooms and the hot showers. Then up into the restaurant where most partook in a bit of refreshment and some a bite to eat, then into transport and back to Bert’s.

Back at Bert’s it was into the presentations. In the A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner was your scribe, Derek Brook, with 38 points and coming back to form after a quiet period. Then we had ‘The Aussie Attack’ as some of our fine Aussie golfers followed in the scribe’s wake; how sad, but it will not last long! In second was Noel Pittard with 34 points on count back over Max Scott in third.

In the B Flight we had the best score of the day as Dick Warberg blew the flight apart with 43 points, nine points ahead of the second. In second was Henry Wong with 34 points and then George King with 32 points in third.

Near Pins: Max Scott, Bob Watson (2), Dick Warberg

Friday, July 13, Plutaluang – Stableford

It had to be Friday the 13th as on this day we went to my least favourite course. This place has its supporters, as we were on our way to play it, but I have to say that as we approach my heart goes into my boots and I know I am in for being beaten up, and sure enough it usually happens.

On this day it had poured down on the previous day, and the course was very wet, so carts were not allowed on the fairways and the ground was really soggy. They do say ‘a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work’ but I am not sure about that!

Soon off, we drew the West and North, the more ‘rural’ of the two layouts, but the rest think this is a really testing and fine 18 holes. I did play this 18 holes really well once, and I am reminded of it every time I play, but even a blind dog can find a bone now and then. On this day there were no bones for me. Playing well the first few holes, the deep, soggy, long leaf grass finally got me and most of our three-ball. Still, it was cool and we had no rain so I suppose we were lucky.

The results showed that the ones who like Plutaluang all seemed to score well. The winner of the A Flight, 0 to 18, was Alan Sullivan with 37 points on count back over Bob Watson. Bob, just to rub it in, scored a gross 73 - that shows the course can be played well! In third with 35 points was Ian Smith.

In the B Flight we had the best score of the day when Mike O’Brien scored 39 points to win from Dick Warberg with 37 points and Henry Wong with 33.

It was the n time for a few ‘cold un’s’, and a walk home. T.T.F.N.

Long Putts: Noel Pittard, Brian Parish

‘The Admiral’ sails home in first

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Monday, July 9, Crystal Bay – Stableford

Stableford was the game on Monday and the Crystal Bay B and C loops were the test. We had an on time departure and a travel time of 45 minutes up Sukumvit to the course. Tee-off came under overcast skies with a stiff wind out of the south and the sound of thunder to the distant east for the whole round.

The course on the day, though not its former pristine self, was in playable condition with bumpy greens from being cored last month.

Back in the clubhouse after a quick round of 4 hours, farewells were given to Per Svensen and Jim Carrick.

Dave Richardson had a great day with 40 points to win ahead of Brian Saaterup in second on 39 and Peter Fagerlund took third on a count back from Takeshi Hakozaki in fourth, both with 37 points, while Mike Winfield placed fifth on 35.

1st Dave Richardson (26) 40pts

2nd Brian Saaterup (21) 39pts

3rd Peter Fagerlund (22) 37pts

4th Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 37pts

5th Mike Winfield (23) 35pts

Thursday’s outing to Plutaluang was cancelled before the players even left the Kronborg, due to the inclement weather conditions on the day.

Bernek & Grey prevail at Bangpra

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Blackburn

Monday, July 9, Bangpra – Stableford

Another excellent field of 22 golfers were signed up to play “The Monkey Course” with several of our new players looking forward to seeing Bangpra for the very first time. With a slightly earlier tee off time than normal our intention was to depart 15 minutes earlier than our normal 8.15 am time but there is always one who “spoils the party”. Not mentioning any names but his nickname is “Heineken” and after a quick phone call to him we managed to depart at 8.22 am.

Peter Grey, Stu Rifkin & Ken Bernek.

We welcomed Bo Cardwell’s brother Beer with us for the first time and good to see the return of Paul Avery for a couple of weeks to sort out some family visa issues before returning to work in Australia.

After a quick 40 minute drive our 2 minivans arrived at the course where there appeared to be a fair amount of activity, however we were soon called to the tee and our first group, a three-ball teed off 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.37 am. We were originally a four-ball but as Bucker’s caddy was still at home putting her make-up on when he called her it was necessary to drop him down the starting order to await her arrival.

The weather was perfect for golf although overcast for most of the day but it wasn’t too hot and there was very little wind. The course was looking as good as ever with the greens playing their usual tricks and three & four putts were in abundance it was reported later.

After reports from another golf outlet that played Bangpra recently we were expecting to play off the back tees but to my surprise we were able to play off the white tees all the way round. One would think that this would make the course a little easier but this was certainly not the case as the scores will indicate.

Jerry Dobbs & Peter Blackburn.

We breezed around the front nine in just over 2 hours and with a quick drink stop on the back nine we managed to complete the round in four hours & twelve minutes which was very good considering the number of golfers out there.

Once more we had a number of golfers still without handicaps (3 of them submitting their 5th & final card) so we had 2 grades for the day with the second one being for the non-handicap golfers whose scores were calculated using the Callaway Scoring System. There were rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes with one kindly sponsored by Mike Gosden and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.

Ken Bernek came in with the best score of the day and his 34 points was good enough to take first prize with Don Richardson (16 point back nine) second on a count back 2 points further back and Neil Skilton (14 point back nine) in third place. Bo Cardwell finished fourth with 31 points and with 3 golfers on 29 points, fifth place went to your writer (13 point back nine, 10 points on last 6 holes) with Paul Avery (13 point back nine, 8 points on last 6 holes) and Martin Todd (12 point back nine) just missing out.

In a breakthrough for his very first win our Growling Swan Host, Peter Grey took out the Callaway Grade with 33 points, with newcomer Beer second on 31 points. In a three way count back for third place on 30 points it was Bernie McCart (58 back nine) who prevailed over Vince Romeo (64 back nine) and Andrew Allen (65 back nine).

1st Ken Bernek (17) 34pts

2nd Don Richardson (14) 32pts

3rd Neil Skilton (7) 32pts

4th Bo Cardwell (22) 31pts

5th Peter Blackburn (12) 29pts

Callaway Grade

1st Peter Grey 33pts

2nd Beer 31pts

3rd Bernie McCart 30pts

Near Pins: 2nd – Neil Skilton; 8th – Jerry Dobbs; 12th – Bo Cardwell; 17th – Bo Cardwell

Long Putts: 9th – Peter Grey; 18th – Graham Buckingham.

The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score of the day) was Stu “Heineken” Rifkin and in Hunter’s absence big Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek paraded Deefa the Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our very generous Growling Swan crew.

Then it was back to The Growling Swan where we celebrated yet another successful day of golf. Peter Grey was understandably “over the moon” after his very first win and also delighted that as this was his fifth card submitted; he will very shortly have an official handicap and he kindly “rang the bell” in celebration.

Wednesday, July 11, Rayong Country Club – Stableford

In order to take advantage of the excellent Sports Day rate at Rayong Country Club we decided to play on Wednesday instead of Thursday on this particular occasion. There were 14 golfers signed up and as we assembled at The Growling Swan we were happy to welcome new PSC Member Max Bracegirdle, formerly of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia but now from Melbourne, Victoria.

Mine host Peter Grey was “chomping at the bit” having just acquired his official handicap but alas, his “debut” has to wait until Monday at Crystal Bay due to prior commitments. We headed off from the G.S. a shade after our normal 8.30 am departure time and arrived at the practically deserted Rayong C.C. 38 minutes later.

The deal was share cart with caddies for 550 baht each – great value and quite frankly I was surprised there were not more golfers taking advantage of this. We were invited to commence as soon as we were ready and our first group teed off 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 am.

Once more the weather was overcast but conditions were quite pleasant with very little wind and with no-one ahead of us we proceeded at a leisurely but steady pace.

After playing here in April it was very pleasing to see the improvement in the golf course with very few bare patches on the fairways and the greens were in good shape although many of them had residual sand but of course this is a result of continued course maintenance. The weather was looking ominous on the back nine with plenty of thunder & lightning in the distance but once more the rain Gods smiled on us and apart from eleven drops of rain we remained completely dry. It took just two hours to complete the front nine and with a quick drink stop on the back we finished the round in a total of four hours & ten minutes.

Due to the smallish field we had just the one grade and rewards for nearest the pins on all four par threes kindly sponsored by Bo Cardwell & Ken Bernek. Martin Todd kindly provided golf balls for the winners of longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.

Yours truly returned to the winner’s list and won the day with 38 points, just 1 point ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki in second spot and Bo Cardwell came third with 35 points. A count back was required to decide fourth & fifth places with 2 golfers on 34 points. Sandy Leiper (19 point back nine & 14 points on the last 6 holes) just edged out Martin Todd (19 point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes). Takeshi Hakozaki dominated the novelty awards winning four out of six.

1st Peter Blackburn (12) 38pts

2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 37pts

3rd Bo Cardwell (22) 35pts

4th Sandy Leiper (27) 34pts

5th Martin Todd (7) 34pts

Near Pins: 5th– Takeshi Hakozaki; 7th –Takeshi Hakozaki; 12th – Ken Bernek; 16th – Martin Todd.

Long Putts: 9th – Takeshi Hakozaki; 18th – Takeshi Hakozaki

The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score of the day) was once more Jerry Dobbs and in Hunter’s absence big Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek paraded Deefa the Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our very generous Growling Swan crew.

Back at The Growling Swan afterwards over a few beers the usual post mortems were carried out but all agreed that even though our numbers were small the companionship was terrific which resulted in another very enjoyable day. It was only a couple of beers for most of us on this occasion as we had to scurry home & don our finest for the Pattaya Sports Club Summer Party.

Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to [email protected].

A Flight

1st Chaten Patel (12) net 69

2nd Greg Bates (12) net 71

3rd Ed Wyckoff (9) net 71

B Flight

1st Adam Oyston (16) net 67

2nd Gerry Power (17) net 69

3rd Eddy Beilby (14) net 70

Red Flight

1st Sim Davis net 71

Near Pins No 4 John Low No 9 Eddy Beilby 12 Salvatore Brizzi No 16 Bob Newell

In an effort to show that last week was not a fluke but rather a trend, Adam Oyston followed up with a net 67 to take the 2012 July monthly medal. For his fine effort Adam also received a bottle of Jameson Scotch whiskey, a cut glass Lewiinski’s engraved whiskey glass, plus an invitation to the year-end Gold medal. Adam’s name will also go on the Lewiinski’s wall of shame.

Sunday’s medal winner Adam Oyston, right, with Colin Davis.

Adams net 67 overshadowed his fellow flight contender Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Power and A Flight winner Chaten the ‘rajah’ Patel’s excellent net 69’s. Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby took the B Flight Bronze while Greg Bates took the Silver in A Flight followed by Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff.

Sim the society’s first lady Sim Davis was top performer in the Red Flight with a very good net 71 and so gets to join Adam in the Gold Medal later in the year.

Back at the presentation Adam cracked open the Jameson’s and split it with the lads.

Bob Newell and Eddy Beilby split a very healthy 2’s pot.

Monday, July 9, Crystal Bay B&C – Stableford

1st Jim Elphick (23) 38pts

2nd Salvatore Brizzi (6) 35pts

3rd Rod Brown (18) 34pts

It was off to Crystal Bay to tackle the B&C nines and that was just fine with Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick who was man of the match as he was the only contestant to better his handicap with a fine 38 points.

Jim’s A Flight winning effort was three points clear of Salvatore ‘the thunder from down under’ Brizzi and yet another up on Rod Brown, Barbara Cooper, Ed ‘our man in the white house’ Wyckoff and Mike the ‘welsh wonder’ Jeffreys. There was no ‘ladies before gentlemen’ as Rod filled the podium and he was also the sole recipient of the 2’s pot.

Wednesday, July 11, St. Andrews - Stableford

A Flight

1st Chaten Patel (11) 39pts

2nd J P Maffray (8) 37pts

B Flight

1st Gerry Power (17) 37pts

2nd Nick Odnoral (18) 37pts

St Andrews is another tough track where anything close to your handicap usually gives you a shout. Today, Chaten the Rajah Patel made it another win for India as his 39 points were more than enough and so keeps his purple patch going. Chaten was two clear of Frenchman JP Maffray.

B Flight saw Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Power and Aussie Nick Odnoral both card 37 points as the luck of the Irish holed up for the top spot.

Peter Barathy and Mike Jeffreys split the 2’s pot.

Friday, July 13, Royal Lakeside - Stableford

A Flight

1st Ed Wyckoff (9) 36pts

2nd Connie Walsh (28) 32pts

B Flight

1st Geoff Kubas (21) 39pts

2nd Mike Jeffreys (19) 32pts

The gang took the always intriguing drive up the freeway to Royal Lakeside. Englishman Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas enjoyed the ride back more than the rest as he was the only player to better par on the day; Geoff arrived early and the putting practice paid off. Geoff’s 39 points was seven clear of Mike ‘the welsh wizard’ Jeffreys, after it was noticed that Greg Bates had mistakenly played off the wrong handicap.

In the big boy’s flight it was Ed ‘our man in the white house’ who stood atop the podium as he edged Irishman Connie Walsh on cont back after both submitted even par rounds.

Possible the biggest smile at the presentation belonged to Ian Wilson as he slotted home the only 2 of the day.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Millionaire’s golf at Crystal Bay

PSC Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green

Monday, July 9, Bangpra – Stableford

A few comings and goings today as we said farewell to Eddie Kelly after a successful few weeks, and welcomed back William Macey, Reg Smart, and Peter Habgood after prolonged absences. There was a good turnout for what is always one of the most popular courses, but unfortunately we were out behind another society, so the leading 3-balls had a slow day.

William Macey tries to explain to Liab how he’s playing off an 18 handicap.

The skies were heavy all day, and the thunder was all around, but luckily there were only a few sprinkles of rain throughout the round. The fairways and greens were in their usual good condition, but some players complained that the areas around the greens were dry and very hard, making chipping difficult.

The problem didn’t seem to affect William Macey (not renowned as Pattaya’s best chipper) as he made a successful return, playing to his (dodgy?) handicap to come in second place behind Paul Edgar.

1st Paul Edgar (19) 38pts

2nd William Macey (18) 36pts

3rd Dave Ashman (14) 35pts

Wednesday, July 11, Burapha A & B – Stableford

A low turnout today for our first visit to Burapha since last year’s low season. Maybe it was because of the PSC Summer party in the evening, or maybe because buggies are compulsory here, making it an expensive day for those who normally walk.

The course was quiet and in great condition, so those that did play had a great day, and completed the round in 3ฝ hours. The after game consensus was that the course is well worth the occasional visit in the low season.

1st John Graham (10) 39pts

2nd Barry Murnin (15) 36pts

3rd Richard Baldotto (25) 34pts

Friday, July 13, Crystal Bay C & A – Stableford

Another good turnout for what many regard as one of the easier courses on our regular schedule. The course was quiet and in reasonable condition, with the greens recovering from recent coring.

Millionaire’s golf again today as the round progressed uninterrupted – it can’t be only the scribe who thinks that this is the best time of the year to be playing golf in Pattaya, leaving plenty of time for a few cold ones on the way back to the Bowling Green for the presentation.

Tony Robbins made a welcome return after his recent hernia operation and almost made it onto the podium, scoring 35 points. Lee Butler recorded the best score of the day as the top 3 players all played to their handicaps or better, but there were several players down the order who probably didn’t agree that this is one of the easier courses.

1st Lee Butler (14) 39pts

2nd William Macey (18) 37pts

3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 36pts

Near Pins: John Graham, Gerry Cooney, Tony Robbins and Takeshi.

Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.

We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email [email protected].

Funk flays the field

PSC Blue Moose Golf

Monday, July 9, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

A fine turnout of Blue Moose golfers showed up on Monday at Pattaya Country Club, including 3 ladies. The course continues to be in good shape and the greens were back in normal shape from the slowness experienced the previous Monday.

Bruce Funk, left and Dougie Powell.

Conspicuous by their absence was the duo of Larry Emerson and Rich Murphy, which left Bruce in a Funk, however, he quickly recovered.

Of the 15 cards submitted (one player establishing a handicap), 5 players scored better than their handicap. Bruce Funk topped the field with 42 points to win the A group, followed by Kevin Worl and his 38 points. The B group was won by Dougie Powell with 39 points with Jim Hern coming in a close second. The previous week’s winner Herbie Ishinaga with his 40 points and boasting to dominate Monday golf came in 8th with 33 points.

Thursday, July 12, Green Valley - Stableford

Three groups of Moose golfers teed ‘em up at Green Valley in the heat of the day at 7:50 a.m. Matt Millar started off just as hot with 23 points on the front nine. Unlike the weather he cooled off considerably to finish in second place with 36 points. The only thing hotter was Bruce Funk who won his second straight outing with a 38 point total. Larry Emerson, recovering from a brief illness and a topped drive into the water on the opening hole, shot 35 stableford points to claim third place.

Spot won the near pin and drew a four-topping Blue Moose pizza for his effort. It was Joe Saint’s turn to be on the Injured Reserve list after a slight mishap in an unspecified hong nam left him with four cracked ribs. Partly responsible could have been the honey flavored litre of Wild Turkey that Matt broke out to go along with the usual provisions provided by the Blue Moose staff.

Aussies rule at golf

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, July 9, Bangpra - Stableford

CSS 72

1st Gavin Leong (13) 35pts

2nd Max Allan (13) 35pts

3rd Peter Buckley (17) 31pts

4th Rodney Hayes (14) 30pts

5th Tom McCarthy (20) 28pts

6th Jon Batty (8) 28pts

A very wet week, when the players were very fortunate to be able to finish every time, began at the always challenging Bangpra where for once the speed of the greens did not play a part in the lower than usual scores. But the course conditions provided very little run however which made what is now a fairly long course following the recent lengthening, an arduous event.

Gavin Leong.

Gavin Leong won on his first outing in Pattaya for more than three years with the best of the count back over Max Allan by a margin of 19 to 17 to become the first winning visitor from Australian in the week and soon to be followed by two more later in the week. At least for them it was a week of huge relief to be able to forget about cricket and concentrate on a serious game for a change.

Peter Buckley wandered in four shots back for third place after a slow day with Rodney Hayes, who also found it very difficult to score when almost every second shot to the green is a wood and with not many shots to play with, in fourth a shot back to make it 1.2.3.4 for the boys from down under.

Tom McCarthy and Jon Batty saved a few blushes for the rest of the world as they took fifth and sixth respectively after Tom had won the count back 16 to 13.

There were no 2’s in the first division but Seppo Sadeharju slipped one in amidst a huge cheer from his playing partners, to claim the second division pot.

Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed new member Bill Bainton and also welcomed back Gavin Leong and Russell Gilroy, Gavin from the most western side and Russell from the furthest eastern side of Australia.

Wednesday, July 11, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford

CSS 71

1st Mike Armstrong (15) 34pts

2nd Alwyne Burley (18) 34pts

3rd Gavin Leong (13) 34pts

4th Graham Davis (8) 29pts

5th Peter Buckley (17) 28pts

Another tough course, designed by the fabled Pete Dye, where the B and now lengthened C courses provided another hard day of pleasure and where scoring was at a premium. Once again the Aussie boys took four of the top five places with only Graham Davis getting in near the middle to prevent a total sweep of the day’s podium.

Mike Armstrong.

Today it was the turn of Mike Armstrong to rise to the top with an excellent inward nine of 20 points, finishing with a birdie which was worth four of them, after a fairly quiet start, which was easily enough to win the three-way count back over Alwyne Burley who had 18 for second place and Monday’s winner Gavin Leong who faded on the back nine after a good start with just 16 for third spot.

Graham Davis never quite got the measure of the course or the greens which again were on the slow side due to the weather again. Peter Buckley in fifth place had another less than spectacular round but did enough to beat many others on a difficult day.

There were no 2’s in the second division but Graham Davis had one ray of sunshine in his day when he knocked one in on the island green to take the first division rollover pool.

Before the presentations there was a welcome back for Johnny Clements, the singing sensation of the west end of Essex, who was unfortunately unable to give his famous rendition of “My Way” or any other of his extensive repertoire on this occasion.

Friday, July 13, Pattana A & C - Stableford

CSS 72

1st Alwyne Burley (18) 36pts

2nd Graham Davis (8) 35pts

3rd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 35pts

4th Max Allan (13) 32pts

5th John Oswald (11) 31pts

Once again the weather took a hand in the day’s event as the plan, made the previous day, was that the competition would be played over the B and C courses with the A course being taken out of commission for renovation work. This was started with a heavy covering of sand on the greens only for the rain to descend during the night and completely inundate the B course, making it totally unplayable. The result was that the A course had to be brought back into play after starting on the C course, even though the greens appeared more like a sodden desert.

Alwyne Burley.

In view of the extremely wet fairways following very heavy overnight rain, it was decide to play from the more forward yellow tees to give the players some chance of a reasonable day’s golf. In the event the scores turned out to be the best of the week with the CSS even going down a shot to 72.

Once again three Aussies were to be found amongst the top five places with Alwyne Burley, being one of them, taking the top step of the podium with a level handicap round that owed much to the solid start which allowed him to take the win, even dropping two shots to handicap on the last two holes, by the narrowest of margins.

Playing alongside the winner, Graham Davis took second place whilst ruing a less than sparkling start to the back nine that saw him drop three shots on the opening three holes and thereafter he was always struggling to get back on terms with his playing partner and eventually had to give best by a shot after winning a count back over Shuichi Kodaka with a better 19 to 16. That left Shuichi in third after a very nice opening half that could have been even better if he hadn’t followed a great birdie two on the 8th with a blob on the next.

The podium was rounded out with another couple from down under with Max Allan, who had an excellent start to the day that saw him take 20 points from the opening nine holes, closing out fourth place by a single point from John Oswald as the latter struggled to get back into the game after not such a good start.

There were no 2’s in the first division but Shuichi Kodaka had the sole one in the second division to sweep the pool.

Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Shier shines through the rain

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Steve Ellison

Monday, July 9, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford

1st Dale Shier (13) 39pts

2nd Henry O’ Brien (20) 38pts

3rd Grant Cadell (16) 36pts

Let’s take a moment to review the way a scorecard should be submitted, shall we? First, your name filled in would be a good start. We get cards with initials of the scorer and his partner all the time and have to backtrack by the process of elimination to figure out who it might be. Fill in your card with your full name (first & last) in block letters, your current handicap, your PSC number and your score circled at the top of the card.

A double for Dale Shier.

Also, circle a 2 if there is a 2’s comp. This will ensure entry in the comp you have paid for, otherwise you may be disqualified.

Right, now on to the golf, or should we call this week the Dale Shier show? The affable Anglo was on form through the rain as we were faced with a soggy week of golf. It is unusual for this time of year (September being the most rainfall) and as I look outside the window at this writing, it is a beautiful sunny day out there!

Dale finished first, Henry O’Brien was frustrated with being just one shot behind for second place, and Grant Cadell rounded out the list for a third with a handicap equaling 36 points.

Thursday, July 12, Phoenix 9-Holes (White tees) – Stableford

1st Dale Shier (13) 18 points

2nd Henry O’ Brien (20) 16 points

3rd Mark Reynolds ( ) 14 points

The Shier Show continued this week with a double victory for Khun Dale, and a double 2nd place finish for Henry O’ Brien! This ended up being a 9-hole comp as the rain continued unabated at Phoenix and all decided enough was enough.

This is one of the very few times we have been rained out completely. If you are reading this from afar, Pattaya has a wonderful micro climate with heavy rain coming in the late afternoon for about 30-45 minutes, then clearing. September and part of October get the most rainfall and we usually can play on afterwards as the courses here in Pattaya are sandy based and drain quite well. This week there was a huge tropical storm over all of SE Asia, so we got the tail end of that one!

Thanks to all who braved the weather and see you for next week’s comps and romps.

Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Bartley claims the cap

Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Tuesday’s top two, John Bartley, left, and Mike Gerrard, center, with
the staff at The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard

Although we are not experiencing huge numbers at present we certainly are experiencing superb golfing facilities at Phoenix. I am led to understand that the company employed a new head green keeper this year and the improvement is unbelievable. The course is now back to former glories of 3 to 4 years ago with the fairways and greens in superb condition.

For the special prize of the KPK Food Services hat this week on July 10, John Bartley scored a fine 37 points, just nudging yours truly into second place with 36 points. I don’t mind, I had my 15 minutes of fame last Friday with my first hole in one at the par 3 Ocean 7th hole.

To make the pain of spending a few baht on drinks for the boys go away, I went to the insurance company to claim my funds back. Strong stuff this insurance!

Back to the golf, and both the near pins were awarded to Richard Baldwin, whilst the lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) went to Paul Taylor (back after a long absence), Dieter Wenzel (first time attendance) and Stuart Gordon (as if he wouldn’t win something).

With a free massage voucher from last week, I retreated into the back room where I dozed off for an hour whilst being relaxed by the lovely Litha and her soft hands.

For more information regarding golf and sea fishing, call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Bramley braves the weather for Phoenix triumph

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Andy Rich

I should like to start this week’s report on behalf of TRGG by thanking two of the courses we played this past week. Firstly there was a mix up with the booking at Eastern Star on Monday and it is a pleasure to report that they handled the whole situation, which could have been a disaster for those members who had turned up to play, in a most professional manner and they could not have been more helpful in sorting things out. So thank you Eastern Star.

Neil Bramley - winner at Phoenix.

Secondly a special thank you to Greenwood where we are always made very welcome. It is one of those courses overlooked by some Pattaya golfing groups because of the travelling distance compared to a number of other local courses. The course was, as always, in fantastic condition and our whole group thoroughly enjoyed our visit on Tuesday, July 10, when we appeared to have the course to ourselves.

So getting on with the results and Eastern Star on Monday, 9 July, saw Bob Watson again prove what an exceptionally good golfer he is. Still playing off minus one, he took the honours with 32pts from second placed Ito Akitoshi (8) on 28pts and Jim Cleaver (12) on 27 in third.

Tuesday 10 July on our visit to Greenwood (A and B) courses saw Jon Lay (8) return with 39pts and first place from Fergus Brennan (12) in second with 36pts and Jim Cleaver (12) again taking third for the second day running on 35.

Thursday 12 July was undoubtedly the wettest day of the week and for most of the day I thought I was back in England where I see they are enjoying the wettest summer in living memory. Phoenix was the venue, playing the Mountain and Ocean courses, and considering the conditions some people managed to keep a grip on their clubs and returned some very good scores.

Neil Bramley (8) made good use of that dodgy reverse grip of his and came in with a remarkable 39pts which was easily good enough to take first place from always steady Ted Senior (13) on 36pts and Mod Chaviraksa (12) on 35pts in third.

On Saturday 14 July the weather had improved when we paid a call on Mountain Shadow. Steady Teddy Senior carried on where he left off at Phoenix and went one better, taking first place with 37pts from David Brannigan (9) in second on 33 and John Oswald (11) on 32pts in third.

Triple Crown At Royal Lakeside

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

Wednesday, 11th July saw the Pattaya Golf Society travel to the Royal Lakeside golf club to play a stableford competition on the revamped course, which now poses a much more significant challenge to golfers with raised and crowned greens, the addition of extra bunkers and the intrusion of much more water. The condition of the course was excellent and the weather could not have been better for the field.

With little hope of many sub par rounds, as on previous visits, Dave Edwards, Mark West and Alan Walker set the standard with 35 points each for a share of the win. Mark and Robbie Taylor recorded birdie ‘2’s on the third and twelfth holes respectively.

Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Paul McNally and the Booby Bevy went to Don Nellis for his poor score of the day.

Royal Lakeside remains a quality venue at a reasonable price and even the drive there becomes less arduous with time. The PGS will return in September.

Wichai Back at Work

On Friday, 13th July the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Greenwood to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines which were in good condition, even though the fairways and greens were due a cut, the recent heavy rains having delayed that vital maintenance.

The group were led by Khun Wichai in the absence of Mr Len who was conducting essential visa business and the extra responsibility did not affect his game as he posted 38 points to share the win with Masashi Iizumi, who also came good for the first time this trip. In third place with 37 points was Fred Land.

Wichai completed a fine day with the only birdie ‘2’, on B2, and the Booby Bevy was awarded to Lynn Snashall, playing his first round after taking a combination of five unfortunate shots to pass the red tees on B4.

Rabbi’s free beer draw was drawn in favour of Masa Takano.

It is good to see Greenwood coming back again after some recent deterioration of the greens and it shall remain a quality venue in future PGS schedules.

Pratt goes equal splits for win at Emerald

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

First to Tuesday, July 10, when we travelled to Emerald, where we were greeted with a near empty course. The front 9 greens are in very good condition following their recent maintenance, with the back 9 just being cored the day before, they were a bit of a lottery. Having said that, they were reasonable and played the same for everybody, so we got on with it.

Jonathan Pratt.

Jonathan Pratt (18) played consistently 18/18 for 36 points to lead the way home from Clive Hoseason (23) with 34. Clive just edged Bob Lindborg (20) out of second spot on a count back to the last 6 holes.

Near pins were seured by Jeff with 2, while Jonathan and Bob got the others.

Thursday, July 12, rolled around with a planned visit to Pleasant Valley, however the rain was coming down in buckets, so we got to the overpass, did a u-turn and came home. Bummer!

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Music and laughter all the way with the PSC

The Pattaya Sports Club Summer Party 2012

Over 400 PSC members and their guests attended the Town-in-Town Hotel on Wednesday 11th July for the club’s annual summer party. The first thing they saw in the lobby upon entering was a group of photos showing some of the various charities that the PSC supports.

Lovely ladies from the PSC all dressed to kill.

All were welcomed by past Vice President Bobby Clark and various members of the Executive Committee before they settled down for an evening of enjoyment, whilst the Town-in-Town band played suitable music.

Social Chairman Nigel Cannon welcomed members and guests reminding all that this was a party and the opportunity to enjoy the evening with friends and make new ones.

President Tony Oakes then formally opened the proceedings and expressed appreciation to Nigel for what was going to be another great party.

Charity Chairman William Macey they came on stage to introduce some 30+ children from the Baan Jing Jai Orphanage who sang and danced to a spell bound audience.

It was the time for more music from the excellent Town-in-Town band which included 2 delightful ladies in their line-up, and for all to enjoy the wide selection of the superb buffet as always provided by this venue.

The amazing magic act.

Then it was cabaret time and PSC always come up with something different for this item and tonight was no exception! Nigel introduced a young Thai man called ‘Ball’ who sang in both English and Thai. This was followed by a magic act featuring a Thai cowboy and cowgirl who had the audience in total amazement at their exciting act. More singing by Ball and a lady concluded a most entertaining hour.

Next came raffle time! During the evening 6 ‘Lewiinski’s Lovelies’ moved amongst the tables to sell tickets for the 17 prizes on offer.

The raffle went smoothly with ‘Little Bee’ (Jackson) picking the tickets, Nigel calling the numbers, and the prizes presented by President Tony and Golf Chairman Joe, with Mike Coleman ensuring they went in the correct order.

There was a major ‘Door Prize’ drawn by Tony – since Committee members were barred from this draw the first ticket was excluded and the lucky winner of a DVD Combo set was Wendy Bernek – thankfully Ken was there to carry it to the car.

Back to the music with the band who soon had the place rocking and the dance space full, until Midnight where many were still enjoying themselves. Nigel closed the evening by thanking the band for their major contribution to the event.

Speaking later he also expressed his appreciation to the Town-in-Town Hotel for their friendly and efficient service.

Ladies of all ages are always welcome.

Children from the Baan Jing Jai orphanage take to the stage.

Ball starts the cabaret rolling.

Lucky draw prize winner Ken Bernek, left, stands with PSC President Tony Oakes, right.

Singing and dancing the night away.

All change for Phuket’s favourite regatta

Competition is always fierce during Phuket Raceweek.

The Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek got underway Thursday morning in what is forecast to be perfect ‘champagne sailing’ conditions for the entire 4-day regatta.

Raced across seven classes and divisions, Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek incorporates four intense days of yacht racing around the spectacular islands off Phuket’s southeast coast – and four nights of superb parties on Cape Panwa Hotel’s beachside lawns.

The regatta’s new home, Cape Panwa Hotel, was abuzz with activity in the lead up to the event, as the regatta organisers and the hotel’s team worked together to ensure the onshore side of the regatta kept up with its reputation as Phuket’s favourite yachting event.

Entries, at 33 yachts, are slightly down on last year – on a par with this year’s Koh Samui Regatta and the main fleet at the Top of the Gulf Regatta – a reflection of the global economic scenario.

Yachts racing in Phuket Raceweek include the never-before-raced, Reichel Pugh design, Aquila RP45, Katsu, which arrived in Phuket only a few days ago. Built in China by Sino-Eagle, this 45ft yacht is an all-carbon, high tech pure racing machine.

Another first is the super-lightweight catamaran, Hurricane, launched on Monday and heading straight for the start line.

Coming by road from Pattaya, the smallest yacht in the fleet, at just 25ft and aptly named Brace! Brace!! Brace!!!, is a high tech Welbourne 25 sports boat that has raced only one other regatta and managed a third place on its first time out. They’ll be looking to better that result and are sure to provide some nail-biting moments for crew and spectators alike.

A youth sailing team, 91.5 FM-Sunsail Youth Racing, comprised of Thai youngsters aged between 10-15, from Sunshine Home in Phuket, will compete for the first time. These youngsters have been learning to sail and race on small dinghies, but this will be their first time on a ‘big boat’ in an international regatta.

Participants are coming from all four corners of the globe, including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Laos, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, England, Netherlands, Germany, USA. And coming from the furthest corner of all is the skipper of the classic yacht, Idiom, who was flying in from Alaska to take part in the Seraph Classic Invitational Class, sponsored by the regatta’s oldest ‘lady’, the 106-year old Danish schooner, Seraph.

Check out the next issue of Pattaya Mail for a full round up of this exciting regatta.

Fortt takes third place at Bira Circuit

Pattaya superbike rider Ben Fortt poses before the start of the Motorcycle Mag race at Bira Circuit Pattaya last weekend with team boss Rachata Warongon of Panadda racing team, far left, the mechanic, 2nd left, and brolly girl, right. Fortt managed to record the fastest lap in qualifying of 1.06.2 but in the race was in 7th place on the 1st lap and rode a truly determined performance to finish 3rd.

Dolphins shoot down Air Force in Toyota Cup

Pattaya United secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Air Force United in the Toyota Cup last week at the Thupatemee Stadium in Ragsit.

The Dolphins took the lead when Premwut Wongdee found space in the box to nod in a close range header from a corner kick in the first half, but Pattaya were given a reprieve soon after at the other end of the pitch as Air Force’s Nigerian midfielder Kouassi Yao Hermann saw his own header rebound off the Pattaya upright and out to safety.

The visitors were able to double their advantage soon after the half-time break as Korean playmaker Kim Do-Yeon cut in from the left flank to fire a fierce shot past the Air Force keeper into the net.

Now with their tails up, the Dolphins piled on the pressure and shots rained down on the Air Force goal until eventually Pattaya sealed the game when Wasan Charam broke clear before turning the ball inside to O. J. Obatola, who made no mistake in steering his shot into the roof of the net.

With victory secured, Pattaya were guilty of a moment of complacency in defence as they allowed Air Force’s Tanat Juntaya to receive the ball unmarked at the far post and he cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable shot past United keeper Narit to finally give the home supporters something to cheer about.

Pattaya United were due to take on Chiang Rai United in the Thai Premier League this past Wednesday, July 18, and will stay in the north of Thailand for a fixture against bottom club TTM Chiang Mai this coming weekend.

Local windsurfers win 2 silver 1 bronze at Asian Beach Games

Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Kunplome, President of Thailand Windsurf Association, and Sonthaya Khunplome, President of Chonburi Sports Association, seated center, chair the welcoming committee for the successful Thai windsurfers, standing rear.

Phasakorn Channgam

A press conference was held on July 3 at the Kura Serf Restaurant in Jomtien to officially welcome home and congratulate the successful Thai windsurfing team that garnered 3 medals at the recent Asian Beach Games held in Hai-yang, China, from June 16-23.

Heading the welcoming committee was Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Kunplome, who also doubles up as the President of the Thailand Windsurf Association, along with Sonthaya Khunplome, President of the Chonburi Sports Association, who presented cash bonuses to the successful young sailors.

Local windsurfing star Aek Bunsawat will be representing Thailand at the 2012 Summer Olympics in England.

Nawin Singhsart won the silver medal in Male Big Techno category in China ahead of compatriot and teammate Nattapong Pothinparat who took the bronze. Meanwhile, Siriporn Kaewduangngam claimed a well deserved silver medal in the Female Big Techno category 293 Division.

The two silver medalists were rewarded for their efforts with cash bonuses of 20,000 baht each while Pothinparat received 15,000 for his bronze.

The Olympic Games begin in England next weekend with the windsurfing event taking place in Weymouth, Dorset, on the south coast. Thailand is sending representatives Aek Bunsawat to compete in RSX Male and Napalai Thansai in RSX Female divisions with both sailors confident of putting on a good performance against the world’s best.

Bunsawat, a former student from Garden International School (GIS), qualified after a fantastic performance at the 2012 RS:X World Windsurfing Championships in Spain. He finished 57th in the Men’s RS:X after four races. Both Bunsawat and Thansai departed for England on July 10 to give them time to acclimatise to the testing wind and sea conditions at the competition venue.

Siriporn Kaewduangngam, meanwhile, is currently in Dublin, Ireland taking part in the ISAF Youth World 2012 championships which are due to end July 21.

Kenyan champ defends his crown at Pattaya Marathon 2012

On your marks.

Phasakorn Channgam

Lawrence Kiptoo Saina of Kenya successfully retained his men’s title at the 2012 Pattaya King’s Cup Marathon, held on the streets of the city early Sunday morning, July 15. The 30-year old Kenyan athlete completed the demanding 42.195 km course in a time of 02:22:21, just over a minute down on his winning time from last year. Saina was followed across the finish line by compatriot Joseph Mwangi Ngare (02:23:18) in second and Ethiopian Husien Mohamined Teman (02:25:24) who took the bronze position.

In a field once more dominated by East African athletes, Thailand’s top finisher was youngster Aumnuay Tongmit who crossed the line a respectable 11th position overall in a time of 02:44:15 to be crowned local champion and the receiver of the men’s King’s Cup trophy.

Thailand’s top two marathon finishes, Aumnuay Tongmit and Nathayan Thonronawat with their King’s Cup trophies.

The women’s marathon also saw the African runners to the fore with the top 5 places going to either Kenyan or Ethiopian athletes. Elizabeth Jeruiyot Chemweno was the winner of the event after crossing the tape in 02.42.44, to finish ahead of her fellow Kenyans Jalquline Kiplimo (02:44:56) and Magaret Wangui Njuguna (02:47:01).

Thailand’s Nathayan Thonronawat was the first local lady to complete the course, finishing in 3 hours, 7 minutes, 27 seconds, to join Aumnuay on the podium and collect a King’s Cup trophy.

There was better news for local athletes in the half marathon race (21.1km) which saw Thai runners fill the top 20 positions. First past the post was Jaral Jupao from the men’s 16-19 division who closed out the race in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 29 seconds to finish over a minute up on Umyos Kijudom and third placed Yothin Yaprajan.

The women’s half marathon race was won by Sonthiya Sai-weaw (1:24:00) ahead of Worpan Nuansree (1:27:35) and Kan Khusuwan (1:34:16). Jupao and Sai-weaw both also received King’s Cup trophies for their winning efforts.

Pattaya Marathon winner Lawrence Kiptoo Saina.

Last year’s winner Nathwut Immnum once again triumphed in the men’s quarter marathon race, winning in a time of 36 minutes 56 seconds, while the female title went to Berhan Bekele Desta from Ethiopia (45:26).

There were a total of 17 participants in the wheelchair marathon which was won in a fast time of 1:36:48 by Thailand’s Prawar Wahoram who will go on to represent the Kingdom at the Paralympics in London later this year. The runner-up in the event was Raewat Tana in 01:37:51, a full 6 minutes up on third placed Khajornsak Thumsophon.

Young Thai lady Cholthida Janphet headed the students 3.5km race, completing the course in just over 12 minutes, while the boys race ended in a photo finish with Phuripat Boramun just getting the nod on the line.

The 21st Pattaya King’s Cup Marathon once again saw thousands of athletes take to the streets of Pattaya at 4 a.m. Sunday morning to not only test themselves in this ultimate physical and mental challenge but also to enjoy the camaraderie and support of their fellow runners. Judging by the smiles of joy, relief and pride on the faces of the finishers, we can safely say that this year’s Pattaya Marathon can be chalked down once again as a great success.

Women’s champ Elizabeth Jeruiyot Chemweno receives her trophy from Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunplome.

Nathwut Immnum won the quarter marathon event.

Athletes line up at the start on Pattaya Beach Road.
