The Dusit Thani Hotel marked World No Tobacco Day
when General Manager Chatchawal Supachayanont and hotel anti-smoking
campaign manager Pin Krasangh kicked off the June 1 event. Following
speeches and calls to quit smoking, employees engaged in a friendly
football match.
Workers also engaged in a motto contest for the
campaign. The winning slogan emerged as “Modern Beautiful People Do not
Smoke.” Eleven employees who had quit smoking in the past year also
received certificates.
All the activities, like the sports, were designed
not only to encourage a healthy lifestyle, but bring employees together
and enhance a cooperative spirit, Chatchawal said.
Worker Atichat Panwong applauded the hotel’s efforts
to get employees to kick the habit, noting he recently gave up
cigarettes.
World No Tobacco Day is organized by the United
Nations. Special emphasis is placed on students, as the U.N. says 90
percent of new smokers are between 15 and 24 years old. Smoking kills
480 people per hour globally and smokers spend on average about 42,340
baht on cigarettes.
