Rambutan vendor Thew
Janthakhram says he’s doing well enough that he’ll even give away extra
fruit with big purchases.

A bumper rambutan crop has pushed prices to dramatic
lows, prompting big sales to bargain-hungry fruit lovers.
At the Naklua market, a kilogram of the red fruit can be
had for just 15 baht and two kilograms for as little as 25 baht. Buyers
obviously are happy but even vendors don’t seem upset as they’re making up
losses on volume.
Rambutan growing season is in full swing and consumers
are responding by buying them up for gift baskets, desserts or just eating
raw.
Vendor Thew Janthakhram, 35, said he nets about 20,000
baht per month selling the fruit. His buying price at Supatra Land Park in
Rayong has been dropping, so he’s doing well enough that he’ll even give
away extra fruit with big purchases.
