Riggall rules at Pattana
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, April 2, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
17 Outbackers travelled to Khao Kheow on a beautiful
sunny day with a light breeze to keep us cool. The course was lightly booked
and we teed off half an hour early and all completed the course in under
four hours.
The course was good considering the storm that hit at the
weekend with the end result being a large number of trees blown down and the
staff were in the process of clearing up the debris. The greens on B nine
that were damaged by a vandal are slowly recovering but overall the greens
were very good, true and fast; even though many of the fairways had not been
cut, you still got a good lie.
Welcome to two new members, Colin Faraday and Thomas
(Tommy) Kelly who joined us for the day.
With 17 players we only played one division with 5
places, plus the ‘2’s.
The overall winner with a great score around Khao Kheow A
& B, was Rosco Langoulant with 39 points on his 16 handicap, from Paul
Greenaway who has at last shown a bit of form with 38 points off 11; third
place went to John Cogan (18) with 34 points who beat Dave Buchanan off
handicap 1, on a count back with fifth place going to Mark Riggall (17) with
33 points.
There was one ‘2’ for the day and that went to Frank
Buchanan on hole 5 of the A course.
1st Rosco Langoulant (16/Hi14.5)
39pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (11/Hi9.9) 38pts
3rd John Cogan (18/Hi16.7) 34pts
4th Dave Buchanan (1/Hi1.6) 34pts
5th Mark Riggall (17/Hi15.6) 33pts
Monday, April 2, Burapha –
Stableford
Travelling to Burapha today there were 23 golfers playing
off the blues on courses A & B. It was like millionaire’s golf for most
people as there was nobody in front and nobody behind us; leading to a well
paced round of under four hours, which was fantastic.
The course was in great condition from tee to green and
the bunkers were a delight to play from, the sand not too hard and not too
soft, even Suzi could get out of them!
We would like to welcome back Ed Turner after a shorter
than expected absence and welcome also to the Outback newbies, Roger Rees,
Roger Vaughan and Peter Wiltshire.
Once again, we find that this course from the A & B blue
markers is giving too many shots back due to some questionable rating but we
are pleased to advise that the Outback has been asked to re-rate the course
in conjunction with the PSC handicap committee.
Roger Vaughan led the way, with the day’s top score of
38pts to win Div A from a couple of players on 36 and in Div B; 36pts was
enough to win as Suzi, our organiser today, got the better of three guys on
count back, all with the same 36.
There was only one ‘2’; on hole B3, from Luke Byers.
Div A (0-18)
1st Roger Vaughan (18/Hi14.5) 38pts
2nd Pierre Cere (15/Hi12.1) 36pts
3rd Roger Rees (8/Hi5.6) 36pts
Div B (19+)
1st Suzi Lawton (20/Hi20.3) 36pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (23/Hi18.5) 36pts
3rd Jerry Quin (23/Hi19.2) 36pts
Tuesday, April 3, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
There were 11 Outbackers who decided to play the front 9
twice (the back now closed for several months) on a fine and hot morning
with the course in fine condition.
The 11 had an enjoyable time – greeted by the friendly
staff, with complimentary tea or coffee and a cold towel on the first tee.
With the buggy (shared) reduced to 400 baht all was set for an interesting
round, it was not busy so we were back in the clubhouse in 3ฝ hours.
The men played the first nine off the white tees and the
second nine off the blue – just over 300 yards longer; the three ladies, all
former caddies, two at PCC and one at Burapha – played the red then the
white! Organiser Chad wondered if he had made the right decision for the
ladies as some of the white were some distance from the red – in the event
he need not have worried!
With eleven players, it was three places plus ‘2’s.
You can’t keep a good lady down! Coming in top spot with
another podium finish was Noy Kamsantia (19) with a great 41 points – in
addition she had the only ‘2’s – 2 of them!
In second place was the ‘Hamster man’ John White (25)
with 39 points – John’s round 1st nine -18 points (9 holes x 2pts per hole);
the 2nd nine 21 points (7 holes x 2pts, 1 x 3 pointer & 1 x 4pts).
Third spot went to the Outback’s resident Turnip, Dennis
Persson (19) with 37.
The Outback will continue at Pattaya Country Club for the
month of April, after that will depend on the support for this unusual
format.
1st Noy Kamsantia (19/Hi18.8) 41pts
2nd John White (26/Hi25) 40pts
3rd Persson Dennis (19/Hi18.5)
37pts
Wednesday, April 4,
Pattana B & C – Stableford
23 Outbackers travelled to Pattana for a great day’s
golfing where we were supposed to play A and B course but as A had sanded
greens the starters sent us off on C and B. Some of the Outbackers started
early and played yellow on both courses whereas those that started later
played white on C and yellow on B so we therefore had two divisions with 3
places in one and 5 in the other plus the ‘2’s.
The course was in great condition with beautifully
manicured tees and fairways, the greens on both courses had been spiked and
sanded recently but had a good surface and were flat and true and made for
good scoring on the day.
We made good time over the first 14 holes but
thunderstorms interrupted play and the officials stopped play by sounding
the siren and sending out marshals to send players to drinks stops for over
an hour. Unfortunately they never started play again and golfers took it
upon themselves to commence play after an hour of no decision and completed
their rounds under overcast skies but with no rain or lightning.
There were six players who went out early and played off
yellow tees and the winner was a visitor from Costa Rica, Dave Maddox with a
great score of 40 points off his 22 handicap, from Steve Poznanski with 38
points off his 12 handicap with third place going to Bob (Capt) Finley with
34 off 14.
In the other group there were 17 players who played C off
white and B off yellow with the winner Mark Riggall shooting a great score
of 44 points off his 15 handicap, from Andy Makara with 38 points off his 30
handicap, with third place going to Paul Greenaway with 37 points off his 11
handicap, with John White (36pts) in fourth off 24 and fifth place going to
the steadily improving Graham Woollett (35pts) off 22.
There was one ‘2’ going to Ed Turner.
Friday, April 6, Green
Valley – Stableford
Although a holiday and contrary to many who thought the
course was closed due a tournament, 28 Outbackers played Green Valley for
our normal Friday outing and the course was presented as well as I have ever
seen, the fairways, tees and greens were in great condition and even the
bunkers were as well. It’s just a pity that more players don’t take the time
to make sure that the caddies rake the bunkers properly as some players were
forced to play out of footprints.
The course has been heavily booked over the last week for
the Thai Junior Championship and the layout has held its condition very well
considering the number of juniors that have played during the week. Pace of
play was very good for our groups even though the course was heavily booked
with the last group completing their round in 4 hours and 10 minutes.
Welcome to the new members, Pete Mansini and Grant Airey
and some old members, Les Easton, Jan Erikson and Jim Bell who are returning
after a long absence and goodbye also to Ed Turner after his short visit.
With 28 players, there were two divisions with four
places in each division plus the ‘2’s.
Division 2 (14+) had the best score of the day with John
O’Keefe returning a great score of 38 points off his 18 handicap, from
Graham Woollett who continues his form, going two better than Wednesday at
Pattana, this time with 37 points off his 22 handicap, from in third place
Bob Lindborg (20) with 35 points and Suzi Lawton (18) in fourth place with
34.
Division 1 (0-13) was won by new member Grant Airey with
36 points on his 9 handicap, three clear of Paul Greenaway (8) with 33
points beating Jim Brackett (5) on count back, with fourth place going to
Jan Erikson (8) with 32 points who beat both Peter LeNoury and Dennis Pelly
on count back.
There were four ‘2’s for the day and they went to Rosco
Langoulant, Peter Le Noury, Peter Mansini and Adam Oyston, all on hole 12.
Div A (0-13)
1st Grant Airey (9/Hi10) 36pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (8/Hi9.3) 33pts
3rd Jim Brackett (5/Hi6.3) 33pts
Div B (14+)
1st John O’Keefe (18/Hi17.6) 38pts
2nd Graham Woollett (22/Hi21.6)
37pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (20/Hi19.8) 35pts

Scougall signs off in style
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Phoenix winners: Bryan Rought,
Lee Casey and ‘Count-back’ Burnie.
Monday, April 2, Phoenix –
Stableford
Our first visit here since the low season last year and
with diminishing numbers now each week we had a reasonable turnout of 3
ladies and 33 men today. As with the majority of courses this time of the
year, all holes on the Lakes nine have been holitized and this was closed
today so we were allocated the Mountain and Ocean.
The cut in the three men’s divisions was 6-16, 17-20 and
21+. It was a very hot and humid day with a slight breeze on some of the
holes.
In his last round with us before he departed back to the
Scottish Highlands, the telephone box boy, Dennis Scougall, recorded his
best score over the past six months to win division 1 with 40 points. 38
points came into the configuration for second place with Al Keith playing
off 6 beating Kari Kuparinen, also with a six handicap, on a 20/19 back nine
count back.
The Belgium boy Willy Van Heetvelde won division 3 with
35 points, Lee Casey was second two points behind, and with his last game
with us as well, Yves Bosset beat Ian Plummer 15/14 on the back nine after
they both came in with 31 points.
Another 35 points in division 2 won it for Bryan Rought
and there were three 32’s in contention for the next two places; Erik
Reginiussen had 19 on the back nine, ‘Count-back’ Burnie 17 and Jean Morel
lost out with 16.
Yuza Reginiussen topped the ladies division with 39
points.
Al Keith birdied Mountain 8 and Ocean 5 and Dennis
Scougall Ocean 7 to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while Burnie Sinclair
had a ‘2’ on Ocean 5 to be a happy man in division 2.
Near Pins went to Yuza Reginiussen, Al Keith, Ron Miller
(2), Dennis Scougall, Lee Casey, Ian Plummer, John Sewell and Burnie
Sinclair.
It was bon voyage eventually to Dennis Scougall and
Pranee and Yves Bosset who go back to France, and Ron Miller back to
Minnesota. Back in the clubhouse after the round there were many comments
regarding the reduction in beer and food prices in the restaurant and this
went down well.
Thursday, April 5, Eastern
Star - Stableford
We brought forward our normal Friday gathering here by
one day due to a public holiday. There was torrential rain as we drove down
the 331 and this lasted for 15 minutes or more but as we U turned on the 3
to the approach to Eastern Star it had cleared and there was no threat for
the rest of the day.
Iain Walsh, a new member with us and living on the
course, recorded the best score of the day, winning division 2 with 34
points. Mark Armstrong was in second on 31 and in third place one point
behind was Walter Webber.
In division 1 there was a 17/16/15 back nine count back
for three players after they all came in with 32 points; Chris Voller was
top of the podium, Frank Kelly came second and Jon Lay took third.
In the ‘2’’s there were four rollovers for next Friday in division 2 and
in division 1 Chris Voller birdied the 6th to take the rollover pot.

Ditz & Smith best of the day
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited a virtually empty
Emerald on Monday, 2nd April to play a stableford competition with two
flights cut at thirteen and under for the day. The course was in reasonable
condition but a competition local rule covered the occasional bare patches
on the fairways and the golfers found they hardly needed to invoke it. The
greens were quick and some of the pin placements were “sporty” to say the
least.
In the top flight Seil Revels and Stan Kure joined Chris
Smith in third on 30 points with the latter again posting the best gross of
79 off his handicap of one. In second place was Tony Thorne on 32 points and
it is good to see he has rediscovered some of his form and taste for the
challenge of competition golf. The flight winner was Austrian Peter Ditz and
his 36 points was a good return for some solid consistent golf.
In the tightly contested second flight Pete Seward took
third place with 34 points, just one behind Benny Hansen, second with 35.
The flight winner was James Smith and his 36 points gave him a place finish
for the third consecutive round.
Benny and Chris Smith both recorded birdie ‘2’s on the
fifth hole and the Booby Bevy went to the star of the previous week, Jesper
Hansen for his 14-9 split on a tough day. Emerald always comes up with a
challenge and this day it was as tough as anyone could expect.
Hansen back in harness
The first public holiday in a busy month saw the Pattaya
Golf Society visit Rayong Country Club for the first time this year on
Chakri Day, Friday 6th April. The course was empty on a day when the other
courses in the Kingdom were attempting to set a world record for competition
entries on the annual Royal holiday. By contrast the PGS turned out its
smallest field of the year but those involved contributed to the competition
with their usual spirit on a course in relatively good condition.
In joint third place was Pete Seward with a steady 30
points whilst Jesper Hansen concluded his short stay with yet another win;
his 34 points resulting from a round which saw him collect nineteen on the
tough front nine.
There were no birdie ‘2’s on the slow to medium greens
and Mr Len took the Booby Bevy for trying to use a ladies’ locker key to the
amusement of the group.
Songkran is on the horizon and the PGS have no formal
golf that week. Instead we have organised a first ever visit to the
spectacular Wangjuntr Highlands course on Wednesday, 18th
April. If enough people are entered we shall have a stableford competition
with the presentation in the clubhouse afterwards, otherwise it will just be
“social” golf. Call at the bar or contact Mr Len for details.

‘Roaring Forties’ at Green Valley
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, April 1, Green
Valley – Stableford
A Flight
1st Steve Mulberry (9) 40pts
2nd Jan Erikssen (11) 37pts
B Flight
1st Adam Oyston (17) 40pts
2nd Jim Bell (17) 40pts
Near Pins: No 4 Pierre Bietry; No 9 Garry
Blackburne; No 12 Steve Mulberry; No 16Adam Oyston

Sunday winner Steve
Mullberry.
B Flight was top heavy as Adam Oyston locked horns with
Jimmy ‘no’ Bell as both topped the flight with solid 40 point returns. Adam
emerged the victor in the resulting count back. Jim’s perseverance with his
new grip seems to be paying off (thanks Bob).
A Flight had its own 40 pointer as Steve Mulberry took
the top podium spot and co man of the match. Steve’ was three clear of Jan
‘the quite one’ Erikssen.
I have heard from a reliable source that the Principle is
on the lookout for a new extra long shafted putter as this is the second
week running he has played a fresh air putt. In the meantime, what’s
happened to the Co. Offaly mob?
Jim Brackett (a pair) and six other players carded 2’s.
Monday, April 2, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
A Flight
1st Claude Harder (15) 37pts
2nd Matt Doyle (15) 35pts
B Flight
1st Fergus O’Brien (26) 37pts
2nd John Heaney (19) 36pts
It seems that every week he receives a compliment for his
ever improving play, and there is no reason that should not continue as
Claude Harder topped A Flight and shared the man of the match as he was one
of only two players to better par. Matt ‘the big easy’ Doyle finally found
his way to the podium with 35 points
Irishman Fergus O’Brien led B Flight and gained a share
of man of the match with his 37 points. Fergus was one stroke clear of
fellow Irishman John Heaney.
Kevin Mcentee, whose golf swing had been a little
impaired (due no doubt to his bulging wallet), slotted home the only 2 of
the day
Wednesday, April 4,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (10) 37pts
2nd Phil Smedley (13) 37pts
3rd Rod Peach (14) 36pts
4th Stephan Berg (5) 36pts
B Flight
1st Dermot Murphy (18) 40pts
2nd Paul Hack (18) 34pts
3rd Peter Wallace (21) 33pts
4th John Heaney (19) 33pts
For our 6th ever co-sanctioned two
day event with The Golf Club it was very pleasing to see an excellent
turnout. Leading the first day’s charge was B Flight’s and Ireland’s Dermot
Murphy with an excellent 40 points. Dermot’s fine effort was six stokes
clear of Paul Hack, plus a further seven over Peter Wallace, John Heaney,
Eddy Beilby, Jim Elphick and Jimmy ‘no’ Bell. The luck of the Irish held up
as both Peter and John filled the flight in that order.
Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff and Phil Smedley
were knotted at 37 points; the knot was untied by count back, with Ed having
the better of it. The minor flight places were filled by Rod Peach as he
edged Stephen Berg with the aid of a further count back.
It will be interesting to see Dermot’s score holds up on
Thursday. Please see The Golf Club report located else were in the Pattaya
Mail
By the way, Ed’s day was made even more rewardable as he
collected a very healthy 2’s pot.
Back at Lewiinski’s and after the prize giving Colin
thanked the staff for all their hard work and the girls for a wonderful
Buffet.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Paul Hartley drives long to win
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, April 2, Crystal
Bay - Stablefor
CSS 71
1st Paul Hartley (19) 41pts
2nd Alan Griffiths (12) 38pts
3rd Clive Hall (16) 37pts
4th Ryan McGregor (12) 37pts
5th Alan Pilkington (10) 35pts
6th Bruce Kusyk (13) 34pts
Following a very tough time during the previous week’s
competitions it was off to the wide open spaces of Crystal Bay over the A
and B courses, which compare well with most of the courses on the schedule
at this time although still some way short of the condition of old.

Paul Hartley.
There is also no sign of improvement in the changing
rooms areas where with just a little effort to make at least four showers
usable and a tosh over with some paint would transform a poor experience
after the round into one that could retain some of the shine of the day, but
all in all the day is an inexpensive day of good golfing activity and worth
the trip.
Paul Hartley stunned his playing partners and the rest of
the field as his prodigious drives throughout the day, most of which found
the fairways, proved to be the difference as he even made the green in two
on three of the par fives, and although he followed up with three putts on
all of them, it still awed the single handicapper who was trying to match
him for distance throughout the day. When the cards were tallied Paul took
first place as he was found to be three better than Alan Griffiths, whose
relatively slow start was the difference, as they both returned 21 points
for the inward half and Alan therefore had to settle for second place.

Phil Groves.
Returnee Clive Hall took third with a very good one under
handicap and a better count back of 21 to 19 to deny newcomer Ryan McGregor
third spot, leaving Alan Pilkington back in fifth two points worse off and
Bruce Kusyk in sixth on two over.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Bruce Kusyk
made up for just missing out for the main prizes by slotting home the lone
one in the first division.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed new
member Ryan McGregor and also welcomed back Clive Hall, John Wood and Phil
Stevenson.
Friday, March 6, Rayong
Country Club - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phil Groves (8) 35pts
2nd Rod Crosswell (14) 33pts
3rd Paul Hartley (18) 31pts
4th Peter Wiltshire (13) 29pts
With another holiday scheduled it was off to one of the
regular venues for an inexpensive day when most of the courses set weekend
green fee prices that are in many cases almost double the normal ones.
Unfortunately the more reasonably priced courses are always well attended on
these days, which usually makes for a slow round.
The group from Soi 13 was particularly unlucky on this
occasion as a five-ball slipped out in front of the first group. To add to
the problem they were playing from the blue tees when their golfing
abilities indicated that they would be more suited to the red tees. But
these are things that are to be expected on busy days and need to be taken
on with good humour.
Having been shown the way to drive earlier in the week,
Phil Groves returned to the top of the podium with a solid one over round
that was easily the best of the day by two points and should, could and
would have been even better if the putter had been working as usual, but the
back nine rather slipped away after a good below handicap outward nine.
Rod Crosswell was the nearest challenger who turned up
the heat after an extremely slow start that saw just 13 points recoded when
he came back in two under to take second place.
Paul Hartley suffered a reaction to his great round on
Monday as he slipped back some ten shots worse but on a low scoring day
still managed to snag third place ahead of new comer Peter Wiltshire by two.
With the difficult pin placings it was unsurprising that
there were no 2’s in either division.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome
for new member Peter Wiltshire and a farewell for Rod Crosswell.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you
can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi
13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Neylon nails first prize
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Bob Neylon and Ted Gardner
with a staff member from The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, April 3, Phoenix
- Stableford
With the low season officially open as of the 1st April,
the Phoenix management have set their green fees for guests to the
following: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 900 Baht + 300 Baht caddy fee; and
Tuesday & Thursday 800 Baht + 300 Baht caddy fee.
With a full complement of players today we set off on the
Mountain and Ocean course. Lake course is now closed for (hopefully),
improvement work? A nice mixture of golf today except that the stroke
indexing is the same for both nines. Anyone with an odd number handicap can
easily become confused at which holes they have a shot allowance. Never
mind, the scribe and assistants are aware to check any cards as need be.
As you can see from the photo it was Bob Neylon (The
Boston Burglar) who claimed the first prize with 38 points, closely followed
by Ted Gardner with 37 points, with the scribe (Mike Gerrard) and Hugh Byrne
sharing joint third place with 36 points each.
Near pins went to Gary Blackburne (of course), Tim Mason,
Bob Neylon (as you have expected with his score today) and Ted Gardner
(same).
The lucky draw prizes donated by our gracious hosts The
Relax Bar at Ban Amphur went to Stuart Gordon, Peter Wiltshire, Joris
Goetschalkx and Sergio Volpi.
I almost managed to get away before consuming too much
alcohol, but was grabbed at the death and ended up having a wonderful time
with some lovely people. That’s why we are here innit?
For those interested in joining us, we play golf every
Tuesday, Friday and now Sunday at the same time of 11.28 am. We do insist
that anyone wishing to join our group should be of a reasonable standard and
have a current USGA or CONGU handicap of no more than 28. Players who cannot
prove their handicap are welcome to play for technical prizes, lucky draw
prizes and a free beer when they return to the presentation at the Relax
Bar. There is one other criteria that must be met and that is we are a men
players only group.
For more information about our golf (and sea fishing -
Ladies are allowed.) contact me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 or email mikegerrard@

Mike comes second again
The Backyard Golf Society

Andy Oz and Tony Cowe (standing rear) pose
with the staff outside Blue Sky Bar.
Because of the public holiday on Friday we moved our
weekly game with the Backyard Golf Society to Thursday at Emerald Golf
Course. We welcomed back Tony C and with a tee time booked at 09:20 we
managed to get off early on a nearly empty golf course.
Nine players this week, with everyone in all competitions, and after a
very hot and humid round of golf it was good to get back into the club
house for prize giving.
Tony C won the Stableford competition with 37 points
and Mike came second for the third week in a row on 33 points. Terry C
took nearest the pin prize and the skin results were as follows: Andy Oz
(5) plus (4) rollovers, Mike (5), Martyn (5), John MAC (2), and finally
Tony C (1).
As per every week it was off to Ban Chang for photo
op and a few beers which tasted even better as Mike forgot his tee shirt
so his run of seconds places has also costs him a round of drinks!

Warberg shoots 43-pointer at Pleasant Valley
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top three with one
of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, April 3, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
There are no courses here that everyone likes, all have
their favourites. Some like the open layouts so they can get the drive away,
hit the ball, find it and hit it again. Some like courses where they must
plan every shot, while some prefer ones that do not charge too much.
I reckon this course pretty much covers the lot, although
it has to be said it veers towards the planning every shot area. There is no
doubt it is tough, but most holes you can hit the ball and find it, but many
you have to think. Something for everyone! You nearly also always get a fair
level lie, and even the green fee is reasonable if you play with PSC.

Thursday’s winners with a
member of Bert’s staff.
This is essentially a thinker’s course though, with
water, designed by Pete Dye, and it is probably one of the most difficult
around, but hit long and straight and it can be rewarding.
On this day the course was fairly quiet and we were able
to get away a little early. We got the three-balls away first and they got
around fast without being held up, while the four-balls did the best they
could to keep up. The course was in its normal fine condition, tough and
fast but fair.
The day was hot and humid with no wind, all the players
suffered but at least it saved going into the sauna. We battled on and late
in the round a breeze came up that made the day really perfect. Great course
and a great day!
Back at Bert’s it was into Bert’s ‘Golfers Special’ and
then into the presentation. We had one flight and the good thing was that
with some really good golfers who shot a gross 72 and 73 we proved the
course was playable if you gave it some thought.
In first place with 39 points was Bob Lindborg, ahead of
Bob Watson who shot 38 points and a gross 73. In third place we had a count
back on 36 points where your correspondent won over Dave Hutchinson and his
gross 72. Clever this golf. In fifth was Mashi Kaneta with 30 points proving
that somehow he always slips in. Great day over we had a couple of ‘cold
one’s’.

Thursday, April 5,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It made a change to play on a Thursday, and this was due
to the fact that Friday was a Holiday. Come to think on it, we will do the
same next week when Friday the 13th - a good day for a
Holiday and also the start of the annual ‘Pattaya migration’. It is also the
start of my incarceration as I will not be going out for a week without my
car.
I am reliably informed that in Kanchanaburi the prices go
up for this week and in the Philippines the bars advertise to collect
refugees from Pattaya. I used to go up to ‘The Village’ for this week, where
the period is treated with great respect, but I came back one year a day
early, turned into Banglamung, and it took 5 hours to get from there to the
Dolphin Roundabout.
We will suspend golf from 13th to the 20th. Getting
soaked for a couple of days can be fun, but for 8 days it is a pain.
Back to the golf, and on this day we had a reduced
turnout due to other outlets also playing Friday and people leaving town
early. However we still had enough players to go to this course. The day was
hot and humid but we soon got there and signed in, then we were directed to
the 10th Tee where we were told we could get underway.
Three-balls away first, we were going at a fair pace and
we were not held up, so someone there knows what he is doing. The course was
not in bad condition, fairways were a little used but lush, however the
greens are well used but even so were quite fast. One thing you know is that
on this course you have to score big to win, and some were sure to.
It had rained heavily here and the carts were not allowed
on the fairway, in fact we also had a period of refreshing rain. Usually
when this occurs we use ‘lift, clean and place’. Surprisingly it has been so
long since we needed to use it we all forgot.
It was also noticed that all the markers had been removed
from the hazards and as you can imagine this caused great confusion. Some
did not even notice and obviously they played well. Some had no clue what to
do, says it all.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results. The
winner with 43 fine points was Dick Warberg, beating a fine round and 42
points by Brian Parish. In third was Mike Gaussa with 39 points and in
fourth was Henry O’Brien with 38 points. We then enjoyed a ‘happy couple of
Hours’. T.T.F.N.

The ‘Big Ones’ finally bite
Sea Fishing with KPK Food Services Ltd.
Mike Gerrard
Mixed fortunes this week me hearties! On Thursday 29th
March my golfing mate Goort Gelten and his friends chartered the boat for
the day, and although it was a beautiful day with calm seas the biggies
managed to elude our baits. Nevertheless the whole day went smoothly and
everyone took home some supper and freezer supplies for the future.

Andy Mennuir with his catch
of the day.
Onto Saturday 31st March and the story was somewhat
different. The seas were calm again and the wind was a little less blowy.
This meant that we could go further out into the ocean without being rocked
all over the place. I am happy to report the biggies came our way at last.
As the photo depicts, Andy Mennuir caught a beautiful Pompano. Shortly after
we also landed a five foot shark, however it has to be said they are not
great eating for the farang!
Next scheduled trip is for the 14th April 2012 and there
may be a couple of spaces available. Call me on 087 091 7565 if you are
interested in more information.
Happy hooking!

Brian goes clear at Crystal Bay
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Brian and Daniel.
Tuesday, April 3, Pleasant
Valley - Stableford
First to Tuesday, when we travelled to Pleasant Valley to
find the course in good condition and the greens much smoother and quicker
than last visit.
After a prolonged absence from the regular competitions,
it was Jeff Wylie (5) leading the field home with a solid 38 points, despite
a particularly unspectacular front 9 (that should give the girlie boys
something to talk about). Brian Maddox (23) got second spot over Clive
Hoseason on count back 10/9 for the last 6 holes after both signed for 37
points.
Near Pins were shared around between Ken, Jonathan &
Jeff, J & J both converting for 2s, while Ken missed a shortie.
Thursday, April 5, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Brian Maddox (23) continued his good form on Thursday,
but got even hotter than hot, to shoot a best ever 45 points, relegating
Jeff Wylie (5) to second spot, after he birdied the last to shoot a nice 72.
The course was in good order, with the greens getting
closer to their peak condition of several years ago, when they were renowned
as amongst the best in the area. Brian had a brand new caddy today, so it
was left to him, to read his own putts etc, perhaps a lesson there for those
who rely too much on caddies to give them lines.
Near Pins were again shared around, with Daniel, Clive &
Jeff getting amongst them, (I can hear the crying now), however no 2
conversions today.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with
ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Takeshi sparkles at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Monday, April 2, Crystal
Bay, A & B – Stableford
Now that we are into April our bookings are for just 6
groups and even after a couple of late cancellations we had a waiting list
which enabled us to have full field. We welcomed the return of Buckers from
his recent back problems and also Arne Fuglholt, who has not played with us
for quite some time.

Jan Lovgreen, Peter Blackburn
& Takeshi Hakozaki.
We departed the Kronny right on schedule at 0815hrs and
headed off down Highway 3 for our monthly visit to the popular Crystal Bay
course and arrived there 45 minutes later. It appeared to be quite busy with
another couple of PSC golf outlets also there on the day and after waiting
around for half an hour or so our first group was able to tee off on A nine
5 minutes ahead of our booked time of 1000hrs.
The weather was perfect for golf although there was a
fair bit of wind around early on but on this well presented golf course we
were all looking forward to an enjoyable day. The fairways were excellent as
were the greens as usual and we proceeded at a good pace thanks to the
groups immediately ahead of us. Slowing down on the second nine (B) we had a
couple of drink stops and finished our round in four hours & twenty five
minutes.
There were 2 flights on the day, A Flight for handicaps 0
to 18 and B Flight for 19 and over. There were also rewards for nearest the
pin on the four par threes & longest first putts on A9 & B9 greens.

Mike Winfield, Peter Blackburn
& Henrik Aargaard.
As usual on this course there were some good scores and
some bad ones but Takeshi Hakozaki had an absolute day out and won the A
Flight with a fine 44 points. In second spot with 71 off the stick came Mike
Allidi, now on a dangerous four handicap with 41 points and Ken (let’s hear
it for) Bernek was third with 38 points. After 12 points on the first nine
Stu (Heineken) Rifkin jumped into top gear (more Heinekens) and his 24
points on the second nine was good enough to give him fourth spot.
A steady 36 points from Jan Lovgreen enabled him to win
the B Flight, three points ahead of J C Lhoste in second place. On 32 points
came Alain (Inspector Clouseau) Taddei in third spot with Bjarne (Mr
Fashion) Kjaer finishing fourth one point further back.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 44pts
2nd Mike Allidi (4) 41pts
3rd Ken Bernek (16) 38pts
4th Stu Rifkin (13) 36pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Jan Lovgreen (20) 36pts
2nd J C Lhoste (24) 33pts
3rd Alain Taddei (19) 32pts
4th Bjarne Kjaer (19) 31pts
Near Pins: A5 – Takeshi Hakozaki; A8 – Martin
Todd; B4 – Arne Max Pedersen; B6 – Alain Taddei
Long Putts: A9 – Mike Allidi; B9 – Jerry Dobbs
The Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) was
awarded to Aussie Jerry Dobbs and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who once more
collected many donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny crew.
Thursday, April 5,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A late withdrawal and a late inclusion enabled us to have
another full field of golfers signed up for another of our favorite courses,
the challenging Mountain Shadow. After we assembled at Caf้ Kronborg we
handed out welcomes to Scott Lobenwein and “Strings” from Queensland,
Australia. Strings used to have dreadlocks but has now got rid of them, but
of course the nickname has stuck.
Departing the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs we headed
off down Sukhumvit Road for the second time this week and without
encountering too many delays going through Sriracha we arrived at the course
48 minutes later. Surprisingly it was very quiet and we were invited to tee
off when we were ready and in great weather conditions our first four-ball
got away 25 minutes ahead of schedule at 0935 hrs.
It was not too hot and with a gentle breeze we proceeded
in a leisurely fashion with no-one in front of us and of course the golf
course was in terrific shape with most of the greens ready to trap anyone
who ended up above the hole with putts of medium to long distance.
Completing our front nine in one hour & fifty five minutes we took it easy
on the back nine and took a fairly lengthy drink break before the thirteenth
tee. There had been a couple of rumbles of thunder but the weather remained
fine and we completed our full round in the excellent time of four hours &
ten minutes.
There were 2 flights on the day plus rewards for nearest
the pin on the four par threes & longest first putts on the ninth &
eighteenth greens.
Once again the course was playing fairly tough with just
3 players bettering their handicap and in A Flight it was Henrik Aargaard
who finished first with a fine 38 points. In a count back for second & third
Lotte Boskov (19 point back nine) just edged out Stu (Heineken) Rifkin (18
point back nine) with both golfers having 37 points. Alain (Inspector
Clouseau) Taddei finished in fourth place with 35 points.
Mike Winfield (20 point back nine) won the B Flight on a
count back from Scott Lobenwein (16 point back nine), both having 35 points.
Thientong Charoenrung finished in third place with 33 points, one point
ahead of J C Lhoste in fourth spot.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Henrik Aargaard (17) 38pts
2nd Lotte Boskov (17) 37pts
3rd Stu Rifkin (13) 37pts
4th Alain Taddei (18) 35pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Mike Winfield (20) 35pts
2nd Scott Lobenwein (31) 35pts
3rd Thientong Charoenrung (20)
33pts
4th J C Lhoste (23) 32pts
Near Pins: 5th – Arne Max
Pedersen; 8th – Thientong Charoenrung; 15th
– Scott Lobenwein; 17th – Mike Gosden
Long Putts: 9th – Niels
Hansen; 18th – Arne Max Pedersen
The Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) was
once again won by Ron Folks and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who once more
collected many donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny crew.

Rab gets a head start
for monthly title
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green

A good week for
Rab McDonald.
Monday, April 2, Crystal
Bay C&A - Stableford
The low season seems to have arrived, as only 14 golfers
turned out today, meaning only one flight. We arrived to find the course to
be wonderfully quiet, and teed off as soon as we were on the tee. The round
progressed smoothly and everyone was back in the clubhouse in around 4
hours.
Rab McDonald continued his recent good form to start off
the month with a well deserved win, one point ahead of John Graham.
1st Rab McDonald (15) 38pts
2nd John Graham (10) 37pts
3rd J.J. Harney (12) 36pts
4th Gordon Melia (18) 36pts
Near Pins: Keith Norman, Gordon Melia, Paul Smith,
and Raleigh Gosney
Wednesday, April 4,
Plutuluang W&N – Stableford
The last time we visited the Navy course we had to wait
45 minutes for caddies, but today we arrived to find the course deserted –
what a difference a month makes!
The course was in good condition, but as usual here, the
greens were painfully slow. Only 3 players bettered their handicap, with
Mark Stanley and Geoff Cox tied on 38 points, but Mark winning the day on a
count back.
Reg Smart made a welcome return after his recent heart
operation, but unfortunately couldn’t make it onto the podium. Great to see
you back Reg, and make sure you get back to full fitness soon.
No appearance from PJ today, who is no great lover of the
Navy course and refers to the fairways as “cabbage patch”.
1st Mark Stanley (12) 38pts
2nd Geoff Cox (15) 38pts
3rd J.J. Harney (12) 37pts
4th Rab McDonald (15) 36pts
Near Pins: Mark Stanley, Gordon Melia, JJ Harney,
and Geoff Cox
Friday, April 6, Khaow
Keow A&B – Stableford
We arrived at Khaow Kheow to find that even though we’d
confirmed the price of 1,200 Baht the day before, the management had decided
to up the price to 1,500 Baht for the holiday. After some debate about
trying alternatives, we decided to bite the bullet, and accept the
extortion, but it certainly leaves a bad taste in the mouth - especially
since we normally play here once or twice a month, year round. Maybe we’ll
cut back the visits – don’t they realize that one visit less, means that the
course has lost more money than they squeezed out of us today?
It was no surprise to find that the course was deserted,
but there was no run on the ball, and it was playing long from the yellow
tees. It was no problem to Rab McDonald though, as he easily won the day
with a great score of 40 points (20 each nine) 7 points clear of second
place Dave Ashman.
1st Rab McDonald (15) 40pts
2nd Dave Ashman (15) 33pts
3rd Colin Greig (8) 29pts
4th Mashi Kaneta (11) 28pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, John Graham and Mashi
Kaneta
Rab Mcdonald has got off to a roaring start in the Golfer
of the Month, scoring 27 points from the first three games, but the big
question is, can he amass enough points before heading off back to the U.K.
later this month.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society
who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why not come and join us. We meet at the Bowling Green at 9
a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps
are always welcome.

Two local windsurfers get tickets to Olympics 2012
Phasakorn Channgam
A press conference, chaired by Pattaya Mayor Itthipol
Kunplome, was held on April 4 at Krua Serf Beach in Jomtien to announce the
success of the Thai windsurfing team at the RS:X World Windsurfing
Championships 2012, held in Cadiz, Spain at the end of last month.

Napalai Tharsai, left, and
Aek Boonsawat pose for photos at the press conference held April 4 in
Jomtien.
The event, which took place from 21-28 March, marked an
important date on the calendar as it was the final chance for Olympic
qualification and two local windsurfers, Aek Boonsawat and Napalai Tharsai,
were able to achieve the qualifying standard and will thus represent
Thailand at the London Summer Olympic Games to be held in August of this
year.
Aek Boonsawat finished in 57th position overall in the
‘Gold Fleet’ but a top 60 place was all that was required for the local
sailor to book his ticket to London. Napalai Tharsai meanwhile took 7th in
the women’s ‘Silver Fleet’ and 47th place overall to join Aek on the flight
to England later in the year.
Phathana Boonsawat, Secretary of the Thai Windsurf Association said the
two sailors will now undergo intensive training and preparation in order for
them to be able to perform at their peak at the London Olympiad. This will
entail studying the form of other competitors as well as becoming familiar
with the currents and wave conditions of the Olympic course.

Itthipol Kunplome, Pattaya
City Mayor and president of Thailand Windsurf Association, presides over the
meeting to welcome home the successful sailors.

practice at the RS:X World Windsurfing Championships 2012 in Cadiz, Spain.

City lose local derby clash
Bangkok Casuals Football League Div 1 & 2
Paul Frain
The match of the day took place last Saturday at Laem
Chabang between the two local sides, Pattaya City and F.C. Planet. This was
a must win game for Pattaya City who were trailing Planet by ten points, but
having one game in hand.
Both sides had key players missing for this epic clash
and it was City who showed their hand first by putting their opponent’s goal
under pressure, but the F.C. Planet defense kept tight. City had the first
open chance when the Planet keeper was out of position but the ball was
rolled wide in front of an open goal by City’s centre forward Vorontsov.
Planet fired back and brought out a superb double save
from the City keeper and City then set up a wonderful chance for Vorontsov,
who somehow prodded the ball wide after a four man move. The Planet replied
when their forward narrowly shot over the bar.
City’s Voronton missed another golden chance when again
he put his shot wide when he should have done better. Planet then put the
City defense under extreme pressure and the City keeper was kept busy. In
the meantime City’s Tchuite shot wide and a free header by Gwabon flashed
wide of the post. Planet broke and the City keeper spreading himself saved a
certain goal and stopped Planet from going ahead.
The game was flowing with both sides playing good
football and City at this stage held the edge. Another chance was missed by
City as they gained a free kick just before the Interval, and a great one
handed save by Planet’s keeper made sure the were level at half time 0-0.
After the break City kept up the pressure and Gwabou
headed wide from a good position. Planet could not get through the City
rearguard but a long ball over the top found their tall centre forward,
receiving the ball and with his trickery allowed the City defender to bring
him down and a penalty was given. Planet’s Gee made no mistake with a
thunderbolt shot that sailed into the roof of the net to give Planet the
lead and make it 1-0.
This was a temporary setback for City who were shaken but
soon got back into the passing moves but few chances were made. Both
defenses were on top of their game with hard but fair tackles and then
City’s Dipita noticed that the Planet keeper was out of his goal and his
shot hit the bar and was cleared.
Planet were also guilty of wasting their chances and it
took a good move by the City players to find their centre forward Fotsing
whose shot beat the Planet keeper, with the ball crossing the line before a
Planet defender hooked it away. However the Linesman indicated that the ball
had crossed the line and City had equalized to make it 1-1.
Planet replied immediately and had the ball in the City’s
net but it was ruled offside, however they again took the lead when Planet
gained a corner on the left and a deep centre found the unmarked Ellingsen
whose header found Planet forward Lous to head home to make it 2-1 to
Planet.
With only a few minutes remaining Planet kept the defense
tight as the game was theirs and City just could not break the defense down.
With the final whistle Planet now need just one point to win the
Championship.
The game between these two sides was played in a great
spirit with exciting football between the best two teams in the league.
There were two men of the match and that was the two keepers who both kept
their sides in the game, and not forgetting the two managers who have
assembled the teams and the high standards that they produced. The referee
and the linesman played their part in this superb football match, however
City must start converting the many chances they create if they are to
finish in the runners up position.

United slip to home defeat against Chainat
testing at Oschersleben Circuit

Pattaya United’s Ittipol
Poolsap is tackled by Chainat defenders during their Thai Premier League
fixture at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, Sunday, April 8. (Photo/Ariyawat
Nuamsawat/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United suffered their first reversal on the new
Thai Premier League campaign last Sunday when they were on the receiving end
of a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Chainat FC at the Nongprue Stadium.
United created most of the best chances in a scrappy
first half, with Paul Ekollo guilty of missing the best opportunity to break
the deadlock for the Dolphins when he was unable to connect with the ball as
it flashed across the Chainat goal.
The miss would attain more significance when the visitors
took a surprise lead just before half time; Puwadon Suwannachart taking
advantage of some slack marking in the United defence to latch onto a right
wing cross and head the ball past Narit.
United thought they had got back on level terms almost
immediately in the final minutes of first half injury time but the ‘goal’
was ruled out for offside.
United piled on the pressure in the second half but were
thwarted by a string of fine saves from Chainat keeper Buathong and as the
rain came down at the Nongprue Stadium it was Suwannachart who broke away in
the final minutes for the visitors to slide the ball past the advancing
Narit and secure all three points for his team.
Elsewhere last weekend Chonburi FC secured a
comprehensive 5-1 victory over Esan United to leapfrog Pattaya United in the
league standings on goal difference.
Following a break for Songkran, Pattaya United will
return to action on April 22 with an away fixture at TOT SC followed by a
home match on April 29 against Esan United.

Alex crowned Wednesday Bowls champ

Alex receives the cup and PSC
shirt from Dave.
Wednesday 4th April saw the presentation of the Wednesday
singles league. The league has been running for 3 months with over 30 people
competing for the honour of being crowned champion. This event is sponsored
by The Pattaya Sports Club who have donated a special shirt to the winner.
On the final day, there were four players all in a
position to win the title. They were Sandy, Ken, Queen John and Alex.
However, after the final round of matches Alex conquered the field to win by
one point from Ken, with Queen John and Sandy one more point adrift.
Thanks to everyone who competed who make the competition
possible. The standard of bowls was exceptional with Alex being a worthy
winner.
Wycoff wins the week
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Pattaya’s finest on the 1st tee at Bangpakong
Riverside.
Steve Ellison
Wednesday, April 4,
Mountain Shadow (white tees) – Stableford
1st Ed Wykcoff (10) 37pts
2nd Phil Smedley (13) 37pts
3rd Rod Peach (14) 36pts
4th Stephan Berg (5) 36pts
As the great American cowboy from the 1930’s Will Rogers
once said, “A stranger is a friend I haven’t met yet.” And so it was time
once again for the friendly monthly battle for the crystal, now known as The
Golf Club & Lewiinski’s Challenge, where our two clubs go head to head for
the glory.

Steve Ellison and Colin Davis
congratulate Ed Wyckoff (center).
The venues this time out were Mountain Shadow and
Bangpakong Riverside, both of which are a great test of golf. The format is
simple; there are 2 rounds of golf and each side adds up all of their
Stableford scores then divides that by the number of golfers to obtain a
scoring average for each round. The lowest combined average wins.
We alternate the presentation, so both clubs get to host
the apres-golf dinner and the lads get to mingle with their old mates and
meet new friends. This time, Lewiinski’s was the host for Wednesday and The
Golf Club was the host for Thursday (we usually hold a Wed-Fri comp but it
was a holiday on Friday) .
This was our 4th comp, the first three months had been
won by The Golf Club, so the crew from Lewiinski’s had their work cut out
for them. At Mountain Shadow, the team from Soi Pattayaland 3 took the
advantage on the Wednesday and could celebrate at home (after the lovely
buffet dinner) with a 30 Stableford point average vs. a 29 point scoring
average for The Golf Club. Advantage Lewiinski’s!
Thursday, April 5,
Bangpakong (white tees) – Stableford
The next round happened to be the following day at
Bangpakong Riverside, a course which most of the boys had never played
before but were looking forward to the experience. Aside from the first 4
holes being verticut and sanded, the rest of the course was in very good
condition and the layout was great, especially on the back nine. The strange
thing to find was the shoddy condition of the showers, as the clubhouse and
restaurant were very impressive indeed. Just a little TLC would get it up to
standard without too much of a financial investment, so come on guys and get
your act together.
On the first tee, we knew we needed better than a 31
point average to be in contention for another win. At the presentation that
evening back at The Golf Club, we hosted the golfers to our BBQ feast all
hickory smoked on the Weber grill. The numbers were crunched and we ended up
with 32.8 Stableford point scoring average, nearly 4 points better than we
were at Mountain Shadow! Surely that would be enough to continue with our
run of victories for the boys of Soi LK Metro?
Then the tally from the Lewiinski’s lads came in … 33.8
Stableford points scoring average, we were shattered! Beaten by a full point
after we had scored so well and thought our comeback was in hand. Oh well,
at least we stand 3-1 ahead for the year thus far.
The overall winner was our American friend Ed Wyckoff
playing for Lewiinski’s who scored a 37 & 41 to win with a count back
victory over Dermott Murphy who also had a 78 point 2 day total. Congrats
must also go out to Jim Elphick who managed 42 points on the day to boost
his sides’ average immensely.
Well played to the lads at Lewiinski’s and our
congratulations go out to them. Thanks to Colin, Jim and Peter and their
