Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Ooy, Ken, Morn,
Lek, Pauline & Joe.
Noodle Russell bowled a 526 series to lead first place
Green Tree to a three point win over Canada. Lek Reaper bowled a 222 game
and 538 series for Canada but they dropped from fifth to seventh place.
Tea Party jumped from fourth to second place after
winning all four points from Bavaria.
Joe Ferral had a great game bowling a 206 game, 570
series, and Pao Orawan had a 535 for Tea Party. Pauline, who just returned
from overseas, bowled a 202 game, 519 series for Bavaria who dropped from
third to fourth.
Indiana bowled well but so did VFW Post 9876 and each
team came away with two points. La Montgomery bowled a 564 series and Morn
Mack had a 205 game, 537 series for Indiana. Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 212
game and 565 series for VFW. Indiana dropped from second to third place and
VFW moved up from seventh to fifth.
Brother D dug themselves out of last place after they won
three points from Caf้ Kronborg. Ken Johansson, Brother D, bowling with a 39
handicap, had a great day with a scratch 212 game and 542 series. With
handicap he had a 251 game and 659 series which will be hard to beat. Well
done Ken. Sue Murphy bowled a 515 for Brother D. Kran Nielsen had a 531 and
Yeow a 511 for Kronborg.
Mio Aamlid, making a rare appearance and bowling as a
spare, had a 559 series

Full moon leads to sparse fishing
Sea Fishing with the KPK Food Services
Noi holds the
scribe’s prize catch.
Mike Gerrard
Two days (or rather one night and one day trip) to report
on this week me hearties. On Thursday December 8 evening we had 6 fishermen
who decided they were brave enough to spend the night out at sea (gladly not
me, I know where I would prefer to be in the dark hours of the night).
Sadly the trip turned out to be one of the not so good
ones. Apparently there was a full moon and I am told that squid do not feed
during a full moon. Don’t know how true this is, but for certain there was
no live squid for bait which meant that catching the larger varieties was
less certain. The knock on effect is that if the squid are hiding then the
predator fish do not feed either.
However when the crew eventually returned to terra firma
they reported that they had caught a couple of sharks and the usual snapper
and grouper etc.
It is a shame really because this was the first night
fishing trip we had organised and it would have been good to have had a
better ending to the story.
So it is on to Saturday, December 10 when we had our
usual daytime trip. Once again we were without the live squid for bait. This
is very disappointing because it is the best bait for catching them there
‘Big Uns’. It seems the full moon does have an effect on the squid.
Also today the wind was the winner. It was a very hard
day’s fishing trying to fight the wind: both for ourselves to stay on our
feet and the boat being blown against the currents made the fishing very
difficult. Never mind, out of about 30 trips this year this has been to only
one that was a little uncomfortable.
On this day we had Sergio Volpi and his lovely lady Noi
on board along with the two children of Sergio. Also with us were Bob Jepson
and Peter Holt with John Kelly and Damien Molloy making up the rest of the
crew.
The photo shows Noi holding a nice big fish that was (I
am glad to say) caught by yours truly on a very small rig. It was a good
fight and eventually netted safely.
Lots of other varieties were landed which made enough for
everyone to take some home to eat, so although it had not been the best
result of the year, everyone agreed that it had been a great day out on the
ocean.
Our schedule is every fortnight, (second and fourth
Saturdays of the month) but we have many enquiries for other dates so if
enough names come in we will increase our trips to suit.
The next scheduled trip is for 24th December (yes I know
it is Christmas Eve, but cannot think of a better way to spend the day).
Certainly beats Christmas shopping!
If anyone is interested in coming along please call me
(Mike) on 087 091 7565.

PHammond claims December Monthly Mug
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Hammond
(left) receives his Cafe Kronborg December Monthly Mug from Bjarne.
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday,
December 13,
Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford
Another Thai Monday Public Holiday meant we were playing
on a Tuesday for the second consecutive week and there were 31 golfers
signed up, but a last minute ‘no show’ brought it down to 30.
We were happy to welcome Rob Brown’s wife Karen from
Scotland, Carole & Richard Kubicki from U.K./Cyprus, Bent Agerbo from
Denmark and Russell Goldsworthy from Gosnells Golf Club in Perth, Western
Australia.
Waiting for the ‘no show’ caused us to depart the Kronny
a few minutes later than our scheduled 0815 hrs and we arrived at the course
just 42 minutes later. It was quite busy and we resigned ourselves to the
fact that there would be very little chance of teeing off earlier than our
1006 hrs scheduled time so it was time to relax for an hour. Most of us took
the opportunity to have a practice putt and chip and some even spent time on
the driving range.
The weather was fantastic with clear skies, very moderate
temperature and at times a fairly stiff breeze. Our first group, a threesome
managed to hit off at 1002 hrs and the course was looking quite good, slowly
improving after being fairly “ordinary” a month or so ago. There were fewer
bare patches and compulsory GUR and the greens were firm and true & at times
quite slick.
Mike Gosden, Peter Blackburn
& Dave Richardson.
Having a five-ball (4 Farangs & 1 Thai professional) in
front of us made things quite slow for us and our first nine (B) took just
over two hours and fifteen minutes.
The Admiral commenced the C nine in style by making
birdie on the first hole and gleefully shouted out to me “four for five!” I
can’t remember witnessing one of those before and he proceeded to score
three pointers on each of the next four holes to build the foundation for an
excellent second nine. After waiting several times for the group ahead we
finally completed our round in four hours and twenty five minutes.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 19
and B Flight for 20 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all
four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
Aussie Mike Gosden took out the A Flight with a fine 39
points and in a count back his mate from Gosnells, Russell Goldsworthy (21
point back nine) finished second two points further back ahead of Dr Paul
Cardwell (20 point back nine) in third spot. Niels Hansen (grumbling at not
playing well) was fourth with 36 points just ahead of his mate Bjarne Kjaer,
finishing fifth with 35 points.
It was The Admiral himself, Dave Richardson who won the B
Flight with 39 points, just 1 point ahead of Svend Gaarde in second place
with Svend’s wife Susan 1 point further back in third spot. There was a
three-way count back for fourth and fifth places with Mike Winfield (19
point back nine) beating Michael Catillon (18 point back nine). Kjeld Ravn
(17 point back nine) was the one who just missed out on a podium finish.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Mike Gosden (11) 39pts
2nd Russell Goldsworthy (2) 37pts
3rd Paul Cardwell (15) 37pts
4th Niels Hansen (15) 36pts
5th Bjarne Kjaer (19) 35pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Dave Richardson (25) 39pts
2nd Svend Gaarde (27) 38pts
3rd Susan Gaarde (26 37pts
4th Mike Winfield (20) 35pts
5th Michael Catillon (20) 35pts
Near Pins: B3 Susan Gaarde; B8 Mike Gosden; C3
Mike Winfield; C8 Don Richardson
Long Putts: B9 Elias Magnusson; C9 Niels Hansen
The Compass Cap was won by Martyn Topham and having
recovered from his bout of distemper Deefa the Dog had a walk around with
his master, Hunter, and collected many donations to charity from our
generous Caf้ Kronborg group.
Thursday,
December 15,
Pattaya C.C. – Monthly Mug/Stroke
It was that time of the month again when we get to play a
stroke round in competing for the coveted Cafô Kronborg Monthly Mug.
After 2 disappointing ‘no shows’ we were left with 28
starters and we headed off from Caf้ Kronborg a couple of minutes later than
our scheduled 0815 hrs departure time. Just 23 minutes later we arrived at
the course expecting a fairly lengthy wait before our allotted tee time but
in actual fact our first group, a threesome was able to get away 48 minutes
early at 0912 hrs.
Once more the weather was terrific with moderate
temperature and a slight breeze and with the course in great shape we
breezed around the front nine in just one hour & fifty minutes. Most in our
group were having trouble with the speed of many of the greens and there
were several three putts and a couple of four putts (including mine) as long
downhill attempts on the slick ones caught us napping.
We continued our cracking pace and even after a lengthy
drinks break before commencing “Amen Corner” (16,17 & 18) our full round was
completed in four hours & eight minutes which for a stroke round is very
good. It must be mentioned that Niels Hansen made a mockery of “Amen Corner”
as he birdied the sixteenth & seventeenth holes!
In addition to the Monthly Mug Award we had 2 flights
with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 19 and B Flight for 20 and over. There were
rewards for nearest the pin on all four par threes and longest first putts
on the ninth & eighteenth.
Peter Hammond emerged victorious and won the December
Monthly Mug with a fine score of net 69, being the only player to beat their
handicap on the day.
The A flight winner on a count back was Mike Gosden with
net 73 (net 36 back nine) from Don Richardson (net 37 back nine) in second
place. Birdie boy Niels Hansen finished third with net 74 and Dr Paul
Cardwell was fourth on net 75.
Mike Winfield won B Flight with net 72 and in a three-way
count back for second, third and fourth Dave “The Admiral” Richardson (net
34 back nine) finished ahead of Jan Lovgreen (net 37 back nine) with veteran
Hugh O’Donnell (net 40 back nine) finishing in fourth place, all three
having net 73’s.

Eastern Star getting
back to its best
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s winners - Mike Gaussa and Les Charles
with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday,
December 13,
Eastern Star – Stableford
Looks like happy days are here again at the golf courses
by a look at the numbers who have started out from Tropical Bert’s of late.
On this day we had some last minute withdrawals due to illnesses but we were
still more than full.
From my point of view this course at Eastern Star is the
best in the Bang Chang area and whilst other courses have their supporters,
the layout of this is the best in my opinion. Mind, over the years the
greens have always been the hold back, and on this day whilst they were in
good condition they could have been better - hard and fast but not all the
same.
Booking in is easy here and we were soon through the
changing room and onto the first Tee to be met by a windy day. It was soon
away and this course in the wind is really difficult. On this day the
fairways were firm and the rough quite tough and playing off the white Tees
I thought the scores would not be good, but who knows.
Back at Bert’s we went into ‘Bert’s Golfers Quiz’ that
showed us all how much we do not know, and which Dick Warberg’s team won,
then onto the presentation.
In the A Flight, 0 to 19, the winner was Mike Gaussa with
38 points ahead of John Binns on 37 points in second, Walter Baechli in
third on 36 points and Derek Brook in fourth on 35.
In the B Flight Les Charles won with 38 points ahead of a
three-way count back on 36 points that saw Kevin Dinan in second, Chris
Walsh in third and Graham Buckingham in fourth.
We then as usual made the best of Tropical Bert’s ‘Happy
Hour’. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Walter Baechli, Les Charles
Long Putt: Kenny Chung, Graham Buckingham

Plunkett plunders the B Flight with highest score of the week
PSC Golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Paulie O’Mahoney (left) and
Steve Mann, who both tallied 40 points each at Burapha.
Monday, Dec. 12, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
This was the second of our two successive Holiday Monday
visits to Pattaya Country Club where 25 players braved the early morning
cold start, as temperatures dropped to 18 deg overnight. Needless to say,
the cooler conditions made it ideal for golf but only for Div B, as the best
Div A could muster was 32 points and there were five players with that
score. In the count back shake-up, John Stafford headed the field from Owen
Walkley and John Cunningham.
Div B was easily won by Ivan Plunkett with 41 points, and
received a handicap cut of 2 shots, from Bob Lindborg, who, considering he
admits he doesn’t like the course, did well to take second with 37 from John
Kittilsen in third on 36.
There were two ‘2’s from John Cunningham (hole 7) & Jack
Moseley (hole 12).
Div A (0-16)
1st John Stafford (15/Hi16) 32pts
2nd Owen Walkley (8/Hi9.8) 32pts
3rd John Cunningham (4/Hi6) 32pts
4th Lloyd Shuttleworth (4/Hi6.1)
32pts
Div B (17+)
1st Ivan Plunkett (21/Hi22.3) 41pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (18/Hi19.4) 37pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (18/Hi18.7) 36pts
4th Suzi Lawton (20/Hi19.2) 35pts
Tuesday, Dec. 13, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
The usual Tuesday crowd was once again well supported as
18 turned out, which produced generally some much better scoring than
Monday, as no less than four players scored 38 points and two more scored
36.
Chad, our Tuesday organiser, was quite disappointed to
learn that his excellent 38 points only earned him third place on count
back, behind Doug Chalkley and Orn, both winners of their respective
divisions the previous week. Playing partners for the last time, Kurt Eric
and Mam took the top two places in Div B with 38 and 36 respectively, ahead
of a resurgent Geoff Moodie, also with 36.
Course wise, the greens have been allowed to grow a
little but hole 16 is still lethal to putt on when above the hole and most
bunkers are sorely lacking attention and continue to be in poor condition,
producing some horrid, virtually unplayable lies.
There were two ‘2’s from Nigel Cannon (hole 5) and Dave
Earthrowl (hole 12).
On Tuesday 27th Dec we shall be having our usual
Christmas “Fun Day’ competition, which will once again take the format of a
rainbow multiplier with a difference. So find yourself a partner, if not
leave to Capt’ Bob to pair you up and come and enjoy the day. After the comp
will be food at the Outback, included in the 300 baht entry fee and as usual
a little later, many of the regular caddies will be joining us as well.
Div A (0-20)
1st Orn Kanasaengsri (15/Hi14.7)
38pts
2nd Doug Chalkley (20/Hi21.3) 38pts
3rd Barry Chadbourn (18/Hi18.7)
38pts
4th Lloyd Shuttleworth (4/Hi6.2)
34pts
Div B (21+)
1st Kurt Eric Persson (29/Hi29.6)
38pts
2nd Phompinmon Seesa (29/Hi28.1)
36pts
3rd Geoff Moodie (25/Hi25.7) 36pts
4th Nigel Cannon (22/Hi22.5) 35pts
Wednesday, Dec. 14,
Burapha – Stableford
Making the most of the tough rating and slope awarded to
Burapha A & B from the blue tees, Paulie O’Mahoney saw his handicap index
leap over 3 shots to give him a playing handicap of 12. He shared the top
spot in Div A on 40 points with Steve Mann, who lost only on count back in a
day of excellent scoring when nobody in Div A shot less than 30 points, even
the Capt’ found a bit of form!
Pete Stonebridge headed Div B with a fine 39 ahead of
Svenn Lund and playing partner, Jon Kittilsen who both shot 38 and only Andy
Makara failed to make the 30 points mark by one. Generally a day of
brilliant scoring on a course that was in perfect condition producing a CSA
of one shot easier than par.
For the record, 20 played and there were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0-17)
1st Paulie O’Mahoney (12/Hi8.9)
40pts
2nd Steve Mann (13/Hi10.3) 40pts
3rd Owen Walkley (13/Hi9.9) 37pts
4th Neil Lavery (16/Hi12.6) 37pts
Div B (18+)
1st Pete Stonebridge (23/Hi19)
39pts
2nd Svenn Ole (18/Hi14.3) 38pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (23/Hi18.7) 38pts
4th Bob Lindborg (23/Hi19) 37pts
Friday, Dec. 16, Green
Valley – Stableford
The relatively small field today of 20 were subjected to
a delayed start just before teeing off as two four-balls who were late for
their allotted tee time were put out immediately in front. The numbers were
down probably because of the PSC monthly event at Emerald and some of our
guys who were marshaling at the Thailand Open at Amata Spring near Chonburi,
where Lee Westwood has equaled the 36 hole Asian tour record of 20 under
par.
Nothing quite like that here, in fact only one person
managed to even equal handicap as Owen Walkley won Div A with his 36 points,
followed in by our organiser for the day, Suzi on 35.
Div B went to Steve Giles, who recorded his first ever
win with the Outback on 35 points, ahead of Friday regular Ed Horrocks on 34
and welcome back to David and Margaret Wilkinson, even though they did not
trouble the leaderboard too much.
There was only one ‘2’ which came from Suzi on the 12th.
Div A (0-17)
1st Owen Walkley (9/Hi9.9) 36pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (17/Hi19.2) 35pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (10/Hi10.7) 30pts
4th Murray Hart (12/Hi12.5) 30pts
Div B (18+)
1st Steve Giles (25/Hi24.2) 35pts
2nd Ed Horrocks (22/Hi21.3) 34pts
3rd Andy Makara (30/Hi28.5) 32pts
4th Barry Lewis (29/Hi28.2) 31pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or
give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Murphy on top once more
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar
Wednesday winner Dale Murphy
(left) holds the monthly trophy with runner-up Mark Campbell (right).
The weather was great and the course at the Pattaya
Country Club this past 14th of December was in good shape.
Seventeen players teed off to a cool early morning
beginning and the play moved well but a couple of singles were on the course
and should have at least paired up.
Back at Caddy Shack II the cards were reviewed and
strokes counted. Coming in first was Dale Murphy, no stranger to the top
spot, with 33 points to get his name etched on the monthly trophy. Chasing
Dale was Mark Campbell who came in with 32, and was somewhat miffed at
spending all that money just to come in second place. Jan and Richard lagged
behind with 30 points each.
Once again Herbie provided vittles of long hot dogs and
refreshments.
Weather is the winner this week
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Allan Cassin and Dave
Edwards.
Tuesday, Dec. 13,
Greenwood - Stableford
First up, what a glorious week weather wise for golf;
clear skies, not too hot, light breezes, bummer really, because it’s one
less excuse for playing not so good.
Greenwood A & B was the venue for Tuesday, with the
course matching the weather. Too bad about the scores (with 1 exception) as
Allan Cassin (12) was the stand-out performer on this day, with a well
compiled 37 points, beating Dave Edwards (18) into second place with 32
points, Dave having just edged Jeff Wylie (6) on countback 16/15.
Near pins provided some consolation to Jeff, Willem &
Tony, with one going to Banglamung Boys Home.
Thursday, Dec. 15,
Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday was a visit to Pleasant Valley, where we played
the Blue Tees, some of which were back a bit, while others were forward,
worked out +50 yards or so, but still under 6,400 yards.
Jeff Wylie (6) was the beneficiary of the count back
today, edging Jim Federspiel (15) 19/17, after both signed for a moderate 34
points. Allan, Jeff & Brian picked up near pins, with 1 going to BBH.
Friday was the PSC tournament at Emerald; white tees for
all groups at a tick over 6,000 yards, not much imagination there, again. We
continue to support the PSC with 2 groups this month, and were to the fore,
with Joel getting a Long Drive, Willem a NTP & Jeff a NTP & first in A
Flight.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting prompt presentations on both days.
Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers
& good golfing!

Shane & Rodney - 2011 Champions
IPGC Championship Report 2011
2011 Gross and Net
Champions: Shane Ruddle (left) and Rodney Hayes.
After a break of two years the IPGC Club Championship
returned to Pattana, where a serious test of golf awaited the contenders
who were spread over one ladies and three gentlemen’s divisions. As
usual, after the first round of stroke play, a cut was to be made at
approximately 50% in the gentlemen’s divisions with those missing the
mark going forward to the Plate competitions which would be scored under
the Stableford system.
A good turnout of members confirmed that it had been
a correct decision to move the original date from June to December,
although the ladies section could have been a little better represented.
The quality of the field was of the highest order with well over 25% of
the entrants having a single figure handicap.
As a memento of the event, in addition to the
specially printed Championship card, all entrants were provided with
some of the club’s merchandise in the form of a golf shirt, umbrella,
and towel at registration where the IPGC Hole-in-One bag was on display
together with the Championship Trophies.
Ladies 2011 Champion -
Ritta Palmu
The A and B courses had been set up using a mixture
of blue, white and yellow tee distances and utilising the now standard
major competition IPGC logo tee markers, to provide a par 73 course
covering a total distance of 6,800 yards, which included one par 6.
The course management had also excelled in producing
a very well prepared course where the fairways were cut to just the
correct height, the rough trimmed to an acceptable length and greens
that were approximately 8 on the stimpmeter.
With a first tee time of 7.45 am and playing in
groups of three under clear skies, the tournament got away on time with
the first group returning in just over three and a half hours, a pace
that was to be continued throughout the day.
Although the weather was fine, there was a very
strong wind that made conditions extremely difficult, especially on the
holes that were into it off the tees. In fact the par three A3 hole,
which is almost an island green with little to stop an over-hit ball
from reaching the water and marked with yellow water hazard stakes,
played to an average of almost 6 and was the end of many aspirations so
early in the day’s round, with a bogey for the hole a more than
acceptable result on day one.
Division winners: Rick
Schramm, Paul Bartlett & Rod Howett.
The first division was led in by Stuart Thompson who
returned a cracking result of three under handicap under very difficult
conditions that was enough to provide him with a three shot cushion over
a group that included Bob Lamond, Paul Bray, Martin Grimoldby and Shane
Ruddle, with the cut coming at four over par.
The second division was also led by three clear shots
by Rodney Hayes whose ability on and around the greens was the
difference between himself and Joe Peters in second place and John
Squitiero in third spot a further two strokes adrift.
The cut came at eight over par with one or two opting
to take the Stableford option for day two.
The third division saw Evan Millar return a level
handicap round that led the rest of the division by six clear as the cut
moved out to 14 over, which was a little too much for comfort for some,
who also chose the Plate option for day two.
In the Ladies section Orawan Meeraka and Sue
Mawhinney were level, with Riitta Palmu just one behind them.
It was no surprise to find that the CSS for the day
had moved out to 74, as less than 20% of the counting players, those
with handicaps of 20 and below, were unable to play to within two of
their handicaps.
Plate winners: Barry
Wellings, Alan Griffiths & Len Jones.
Day two started at the same time in similar
conditions to the previous round and with the wind still blowing
strongly, it was clear that the day’s winners would be those that stuck
to task throughout the round.
Division one saw Stuart Thompson fade away with an
untypical return, as the conditions started to take effect, as Rick
Schramm added to his good first round to take the claret jug as the
winner after Russell Exley just lost out by a stroke when missing a
short putt on the eighteenth, with Paul Bray improving on his first day
to take third place.
Division two had Paul Bartlett in the top position as
he improved by six over day one which left him five ahead of Mike
Korney, who had put in another solid round, in second and Joe Peters who
had faded badly after a nightmare on A8 which saw him have to take a
triple, which added to another three triples ended his challenge for
this year.
In division three, Rod Howett returned a four better
than day one to close out Evan Millar whose second round was a mere
shadow of his first but proved just enough for second place ahead of
Burnie Sinclair, who had recovered fantastically well following an
almost terminal first day to take third after winning a three-way count
back over the day two scores.
In The ladies section Riitta Palmu came from behind
to take the trophy by a single point from Orawan Meeraka with Sue
Mawhinney in third another point behind her.
Once more the course had shown its teeth, with the
CSS for the day again moving out to 74, and underling that the two days
had certainly been a tough test in keeping with the requirements of a
true club championship.
Shane Ruddle just managed to beat off the challenge
of his playing partner, Steve Mascari, after the latter had edged him
out on day two by a shot, to take the Gross Champion’s award of the
Claret Jug and IPGC commemorative golf bag by a margin of two, which was
four shots better than the last winning gross in 2009 over the same
course.
Rodney Hayes walked away with the Net Champions
Claret Jug and commemorative golf bag as he finished two shots ahead of
Rick Schramm, which was also an improvement of one on the 2009 result
Once again, playing in threes, the speed of play was
around three and three quarter hours which was much appreciated by all
of the competitors over the two days.
The prize presentations were held at The Haven where
all entrants were provide with a dozen IPGC logo Titleist golf balls to
add to the giveaways already received at the course before Stephen Beard
announced the winners with Russell Exley making the presentations.
Before the announcement of the winners, there were
huge thanks given to the management and staff of Pattana Golf and Sports
Resort who had provide everyone with an excellent two days of golf
together with huge thanks to Russell Exley, Glyn Evans, Len Jones and
Steve Mascari, all of whom worked hard to make the Championship such a
great success once again.
There was also a round of applause for the food and
catering by the Haven and its staff and lastly but by no means least a
vote of thanks from the organising committee, to all those members that
took part and played their parts to the full in the arriving at the end
results.

Bob’s early Christmas present
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Medal winner Jerry McCarthy
(right) receives his prizes.
Sunday, Dec. 8, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Newell (7) net 73
2nd Kevin Mcentee (8) net 73
3rd Terry Mangan (14) net 73
B Flight
1st Jerry McCarthy (16) net 69
2nd Claude Harder (16) net70
3rd Dave Driscoll (15) net 70
Red Flight
1st Mike Craighead (20) net 70
Near Pins: No 4 Jerry McCarthy, No 9 Paul Bray, No
12 Bill Peach, No 16 Mike Craighead.
Bob’s lucky day.
Well it took a four-way count back to sort out A Flight
but if you’re going to have a day you might as well have the whole
enchilada, and that is what ‘Broad more’ Bob Newell did at the monthly medal
Sunday. He did not win the medal but he did stand proudly on top of the
Podium in A Flight, and beside his winning pink envelope Bob also received a
jar of George’s famous Pattaya pickles. In addition he picked up a
staggering 16,500 baht back at the presentation as his name was drawn out of
the barrel.
An investigation as to how Kevin “You know who” only
picked up the silver is under way by the Irish Garda. Terry Mangan is
Kevin’s only witness as he was awarded the bronze. J-P Gasser was not
available for comment, he was speechless and in a daze.
It was left to B Flight to provide the monthly medal
winner for the month of December as Irishman Ferry McCarthy put together a
best of the day net 69. For his fine effort Jerry picked up a Lewiinski’s
lead crystal engraved whiskey glass and a bottle of Jameson’s. He also gets
an invite to the Gold medal to be played very soon.
Jerry was followed in by ‘Santa’ Claude Harder who was
the beneficiary of a favorable inward nine which gave him the edge over Dave
Driscoll.
Mike ‘the mechanic’ Craighead found it difficult in the
red division as he was not alone, but Mike persevered with the old saying
ladies before gents being completely ignored. Mike has now became the most
decorated golfer in Pattaya, as he adds another lead crystal engraved wine
glass to his ever growing collection. Needles to say Mike joins Jerry in the
year end Gold medal comp.
Patrick Kelly was the low gross winner with a net75 while
J-P Gasser, Paul Bray, Alain Bellec, Dave Driscoll, and Mike Craighead
divvied up the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, Dec. 13, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
A Flight
1st Patrick Kelly (+2) 38pts
2nd Francis Goyons (9) 34pts
B Flight
1st Merle Humphreys (19) 35pts
2nd Terry Mangan (14) 34pts
Only one man, Peter ‘+2’ Kelly showed the right stuff as
he was the only player to better par on the day, a great effort considering
his stingy +2 handicap. Peter’s 38 points were four clear of Francis Goyons
as he rounded out the flight. The lads found the course to be in excellent
condition and it has gone through some very tough alterations.
In B Flight Merle Humphreys filled the top spot with 35
points. Terry ‘red card’ Mangan, with treachery unknown to the young
Irishman Pat Reagan, took the count back for the second place.
Francis Goyons disappointment in finishing second in the
senior flight did not last long as he carded the only ‘2’ of the day.
Wednesday, Dec. 14, St.
Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st J-P Gasser (13) 42pts
2nd Michele Sancillo (8) 38pts
B Flight
1st Lew Szigligeti (18) 42pts
2nd John White (22) 38pts
The week wrapped up with a trip to the Desmond Muirhead’s
designed monster St Andrews. J-P Gasser and Lou ‘the thunder from down
under’ Szigligeti were co-men of the match as they posted superb 42 point
joint scores on the day in A Flight and B Flight’s respectively. Gasser was
followed in by Michele Sancillo on 38 points.
Lou ‘the thunder from down under’, who is playing out of
his skin at the moment, was four strokes clear of John White. Interestingly
both flights required the same scores.
No 2’s were carded so it’s a double rollover on Monday.
Back at Lewiinski’s and after a few sherbets it was time
to say good bye to the Principal, ‘Broad more’ Bob, Lou Zigzag and the caddy
to the stars Lee Adelly as they leave for a two week holiday to find the
Yeti in Nepal climbing mount Everest. I will let you know how they got on in
a couple of weeks.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.

Old hands back on top
and top spot
Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
For the second time in eight days the Pattaya Golf
Society found themselves at Rayong Country Club on yet another public
holiday on Monday, 12th December. Again the format was stableford and the
return of some special old friends after a gap of a few years made the day
enjoyable.
Once again having to sit things out was Mr Len whose
daily treatment progresses after his confrontation with a street dog and the
administration of the day was left in the safe hands of Tony Thorne. Not
content with that, Tony went on to share the win with Larry Slattery with 31
points showing that there is no substitute for experience on a course with
recently dressed greens and a subtle layout.
In third place was Swedish lady Helene Lindberg with 28
points, marking her return with a successful round. Husband Michael took the
Booby Bevy in resigned fashion as it was never destined to go anywhere else
after more than two years away from Pattaya.
Larry rounded off the day with the only birdie ‘2’, on
the sixteenth and the presentation went on long afterwards in Soi Buakhao.
Golf is more than just hitting the little white ball around on a fine day!

Tough going at windy Green Valley
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday,
December 12,
Green Valley - Stableford
There was a cool breeze here today as we waited on the
first tee and on some of the holes later in the round this became a mild to
strong wind, blowing from all directions. Normally the scores here are well
up in the thirty’s but today was a true test of golf.
There were eight groups out in two divisions with the cut
at 7-16 in division 1 and 17+ in the second. Thirty six points was the best
score in both groups with Steve Greene winning division 1 after beating Kari
Aarnio on a 17/16 back nine count back. Heikki Alanko was third on 34
points.
The two French boys were first and second in division 2;
Jean Morel won with an even par 36 points and Yves Bosset came second one
point behind while Bryan Priestley took third with 34.
This was our only game of the week as we were at the
I.P.G.C. Club Championship at Pattana on Wednesday and Friday (the report of
which can be seen on page 46 – Ed.).
Near pins went to Kari Kuparinen (2), Raivo Velsberg,
Chris Voller, Gordon Everingham, Mauri Friman and Rudi Schaefer.
In the two’s today there were 4 on the 12th hole for
Gordon Everingham, Kari Kuparinen, Norman McKinnon and Bryan Priestley,
while Eero birdied the 9th in division 1.

David slays the field
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
Tuesday winners
pose for a photo with the staff at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
The headline leads on the story of David Czernie (that’s
as far as I am going with this name - it goes on forever), who slew the rest
of the field on Tuesday, Dec. 13 by six shots as he scored a memorable 42
points including 26 on the front nine! This gave David the first prize, but
also the KPK Food Services voucher.
As stated, some 6 shots behind was the runner-up Goort
Gelten with 36 points and in third place was Graham Ellis with 34.
The best guest scores today were from young Dodd (Stewart
Gordon’s lad) with 35 points and Peter Rawling (for the second week running)
with 29.
Near pins went to Dodd, Richard Baldwin, Eamon Murtagh
and Goort Gelten.
As usual there were plenty of lucky draw prizes mostly
donated by our hosts the Relax Bar, after which we stayed on and discussed
the unlucky shots of the day over a few beers.
Next week is the Nemo Music Lounge voucher competition.
The group is virtually full every week now but if you are interested in
joining please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 and we will try to fit you in.
Non Phoenix members can enjoy a reduced green fee of 1,000 baht as a guest
of the members. We play every Tuesday and Friday with additional golf on
Sunday’s as well for the time being.
December 24 there is a sea fishing trip scheduled if
anyone is interested. Better than Xmas shopping!

Kelly shoots 68 to take low gross prize
The 112th PSC Members Monthly Golf Tournament
Patrick Kelly (left) is
congratulated by PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham.
Last week was a busy one for the PSC; following on from
the Christmas Party on Wednesday, it was the final monthly golf tournament
of the year at Emerald Golf Club on Friday, Dec. 16, with 110 taking part.
This month the welcoming team comprised of Nigel Cannon, Bob Linborg and Pat
Clark, who recently joined the Executive Committee, giving the Golf Chairman
the opportunity to play this month.
With a 2-tee start – 14 groups on each - there was some
confusion early on but resolved by give and take and PSC members accepting
it was going to be a 5-hour round. The course management later apologized!
The Emerald layout was in a reasonable condition for this time of year with
a number of bare patches on some fairways.
Coming in following their rounds on a hot and sunny day
it was the aforementioned Joe and Pat checking the cards and calculating the
final results. The journey back to Pattaya was longer than usual as there
was a big firework display on the beach. However many made it to Lewiinski’s
where again there was an outstanding buffet to suit all tastes.
Joe Mooneyham (left) receives
his B Flight winning prize from PSC President Tony Oakes.
Once all had eaten and had a drink and a rest, it was
time for the presentation and Nigel called order and introduced the Golf
Chairman Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation to all players and his
team of helpers, and gave the details of the PSC Club Championship scheduled
for January.
Nigel then announced the winners and back in Pattaya for
a few months is young Patrick Kelly, the current Club Champion, who came in
with a Gross 68 to take the low gross prize.
Leading ‘A’ Flight was Jeff Wylie with a gross 76 net 70.
It was the Golf Chairman who had the top honour in ‘B’
Flight – despite arriving at the course at 0730 Joe Mooneyham had 35 points.
From the ‘Emerald Isle’ and playing at the Emerald and
winning ‘C’ Flight was Jerry McCarthy with 37 points.
Best Stableford score of the day came in ‘D’ Flight with
Merle Humphrey with 42 points.
It was a welcome back to the Kubicki’s with Carole taking
the Ladies flight with 33 points.
The next PSC major competition is the Club Championship –
over 2 days (Tuesday 10th and Friday 13th
January) at Khao Kheow.

Carmody shoots top score at Greenwood
PSC golf from the Fairways Golf Society
Don Carmody - Monday’s B
Fight winner at Greenwood.
Monday, Dec. 12,
Greenwood – Stableford
Once again the conditions were ideal for golf - not too
hot and a nice cool breeze - and we all got round in less than four hours,
what more can you ask for? So with a good turn out today we had two
divisions with four places in each.
It took a three-way count back to decide third and fourth
places in the A flight with Steve Mann being the one to lose out for a place
on the podium. Once again Don Carmody had an excellent round to take the B
flight with the best score of the day (39pts) from the lovely noisy Noi
Emerson. And John Coetzee managed to get in the frame once again on his
final round with us before returning home to Australia. Bon Voyage John see
you next trip.
The near pins today went to Don Carmody, Bob Moore,
Silvio Bezzoti, George Gamble and John Coetzee.
A Flight
1st Silvio Bezzoti (11) 37pts
2nd Bob Rasmusson (12) 36pts
3rd Steve Plant (14) 35pts
4th Richard Hurley (6) 35pts
B Flight
1st Don Carmody (24) 39pts
2nd Noi Emerson (21) 37pts
3rd George Gamble (17) 35pts
4th John Coetzee (18) 34pts
Friday, December 16,
Phoenix - Stableford
We arrived here today understanding that there was a set
price green fee for two people sharing a golf kart. But there was the normal
confusion as there was one price advertised in the pro shop a different
price in the dressing rooms, and yet another price by the starters hut.
Needless to say we had to pay the most expensive one!
Now I’ve got that of my chest, on with the golf. It was
nice to see Pier Cere taking the honours today with a level par round as he
has been idling away in the doldrums for quite some time now. Second place
was decided on count back with Tony beating Raji 18-17. Also it was nice to
welcome back Fred Land on his winter break.
Near pins went to Raji, Ken Meek, Fred Land and Jason
Cole.
1st Pier Cere (12) 36pts
2nd Tony Dauth (0) 34pts
3rd Raji (7) 34pys
4th Jason Cole (8) 31pts
Note: The Fairways Golf Society & Driving Range is
located at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and plays every
Mon/Wed & Fri. Anyone wishing to play with us can call in to the club house
and put their names down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084 389
2379. Transport provided if required.

point winning score at Green Valley.
Wednesday, Dec. 14, Green
Valley – Stableford
Ted Gardner fired a storming 41 points to take top spot
in the A Flight at Green Valley on Wednesday ahead of Clive Bruce, who must
have thought that his 40 point haul would have been enough to guarantee
first place. Phonsie McGahan filled the flight podium in third place.
B Flight was decided on a count back on 38 points that
saw Ian Covill edge out Kevin Hamilton for first place while Derek May took
third with an even par 36.
Tony Oakes and Dave Strang split the ‘2’s pot between
them.
A Flight
1st Ted Gardner (7) 41pts
2nd Clive Bruce (10) 40pts

ABPC are proud to be the main sponsors of the Irish team

Ladies do it best
PSC Fishing December 2011
Sommai & Khammoon with their
bounteous catch.
Captain Dene
An impromptu trip was arranged on short notice on Dec. 12
by several members and eventually comprised 7 anglers. I was informed on my
return from Oz that an enjoyable trip was had by all and obviously very
successful as evidenced by the photos displaying the catches of the day. As
usual, it is evident the female anglers are superior to the men.
A private trip is being conducted by Tor, wife Mook and
his friends on 20 December and we wish them calm seas and plentiful catches
for the day.
Future trip for
December
On my return, 12 December, I was inundated with requests
for a trip later in the month which is now arranged for 22 December with a
full boatload of 8 anglers. I apologise to those who I had to omit from the
trip.
Trips for 2012
I am discussing with my co-helpers Rich Murphy, Jeff
Doutch & Peter Hyland plans for 2012 trips. I believe with their help the
PSC will be able to conduct 4 trips per month which will help to accommodate
all members who wish to participate.
I will be in touch by phone, e-mail (and hopefully the
media) when plans for January 2012 are finalised and details planned for the
rest of the year.

Pattaya C.C. hosts Xmas cricket day and season’s awards party
Saturday the 17th December saw the hosting of Pattaya
Cricket Club’s inaugural fun Xmas cricket day and annual awards party at
Horseshoe Point. Four teams consisting of 8 playing members of the club, all
of varying ability, representing the Juniors, Thoroughbreds (over 45’s) and
Seniors, played in a 6 over round robin format with a final played between
the top two sides.
The captains of the teams were the 4 senior members of
PCC: Simon Philbrook, Joe Grunwell, Elfrado Roberts and Hanif ‘Sunny’ Qayum.
A fixed rolling batting line up and a minimum of 5 bowlers per innings
ensured everyone contributed throughout the day and limited the dominance of
any one player. As a consequence all the games were very close with the
exception of one thanks to Rob Young whose game changing over of left arm
non-spin conceded 26 runs and hurried a victory for the Club captain’s side.
Other notables were Jack, Debdas, Mithu and Lucky who all
scored maximums of 25 runs and Sodhi, Usman, Sunny and very surprisingly
Simon for their economical bowling figures.
A final between Simon’s and Elfrado’s team saw Simon
prevail as his team set a daunting total of 74 runs that Elfrado’s men made
a valiant 67 in reply. It was a fitting end to a day of cricket where the
results did not matter and the only important thing was the spirit of the
game and the camaraderie between the players.
Player of the Day was Jack and Player of the Final was
junior Andy Thomson whose last over heroics with the ball sealed the victory
for his side.
In glorious sunshine and sat under the tents at the
ground, the PCC players awards party started with the Club Captain and
Chairman giving a welcome and thank you speech for the efforts of every
member throughout the season that have resulted in a hugely successful
second season. The highlights of which were reaching the Bangkok
International Sixes Cup Final, finishing a very commendable 5th in the
Bangkok Premier League, entering a team in the Chiang Mai International
Sixes and not forgetting winning the Bowl in our very own Pattaya
International Sixes Tournament (PIST – somewhat appropriate!).
The batting prize was awarded to Simon for his consistent
performances throughout the season and averaging 65 whilst the bowling award
was presented to Usman for his brisk left arm seamers that brought him a
total of 32 wickets.
Player of the Season went to Sunny Qayum for his all
round performances with bat, ball and wicket keeping. The Thoroughbred of
the Year award was delicately presented to Rob ‘Zimmer’ Young for his
outstanding contributions both on and off the field and the Junior award
went to Yogesh who as a 14 year old represented the first XI and displayed a
level of maturity and considerable talent as a fast bowler that belied his
years.
Pattaya Cricket Club continues to go from strength to
strength and welcomes anyone interested in cricket of all abilities, age,
shape and size to come along and join in the fun. For more information
please refer to our website at www. pattayacricketclub.com.

PSC team plays in Softball Championship game
The Pattaya Sports Club
Softball Team as they lined up for the tournament in Bangkok, Sunday, Dec.
11.
John Stockton
After a two year hiatus from tournament play the Pattaya
Sports Club Softball Team returned to competitive play with an outstanding
and completely unexpected runner-up finish in Bangkok on Dec 11.
The Pattaya team visited the Thai-Taiwanese field for a
friendly tournament to prepare for the prestigious Thai-Taiwanese Tournament
in Feb 2012 which will feature 15 teams from 9 countries. Because of the
advanced age and physical and emotional ailments of most of the players on
the Pattaya team, our focus was on having fun. We did that and more, after
the round robin part of the tournament we had earned the 3rd
seed in the single elimination finals.
We faced the Home Run Team from Bangkok in the semi
final, a team we had lost to earlier in the day, and much to their shock,
but less to ours, we easily beat them. This earned us a spot in the
championship game against the Thai-Taiwanese A Team, who hadn’t lost a game
all day. Despite our best efforts and dreams of glory, reality set in and we
were taken to the cleaners, so to speak. But a runner-up finish in
tournament play builds our confidence for a respectable finish in our next
tournament in Feb.
The Pattaya Sports Club softball group plays every Sunday
and is always looking for new players and welcomes everybody regardless of
age, skill level, experience or time away from the game. We play slow pitch
recreational pick ups games every Sunday at 12 noon and finish about 3pm.
Show up a bit early to warm up, and get your name on the lineup.
We have some spare gloves and all the other equipment
needed to play. We charge 40 baht to play which covers field maintenance,
bats and balls, ice and all the free water you can drink (other beverages
are available at reasonable prices). Spectators are always welcome as well,
so come on out and give it a try!
To find the softball field, go south on Sukumvit, 800
meters past Theppasit Road (that is the intersection by the Outlet Mall),
turn left off of Sukumvit onto soi 87, go 4.3km, turn left on soi 15, after
600 meters the softball field is on the left. There is a map and more
information at www.pattayasports.org.

preparations for the 2012 PTT Pattaya Open tennis tournament.
Pentangle Promotions Co., Ltd, the licence holders and
organizers of the PTT Pattaya Open recently held a working group meeting
with the Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya to discuss preparations for the 2012
tournament, which will be held at the hotel from 5–12 February 2012. Items
on the agenda included the venue set-up, functions, security, support
activities and the PR and marketing plans.
The 2012 PTT Pattaya Open will utilize the Women’s Tennis
Association (WTA) umbrella theme “strong is beautiful” for its marketing
campaign, which will commence from the second half of December 2011 through
until the end of the tournament. At the heart of the marketing activities is
an extensive outdoor advertising campaign in Pattaya as well as utilizing
BTS stations in Bangkok. TV and radio promotion spots and newspaper
advertising will be part of the mix in the 10,000,000 baht campaign
stretching over 2 months.
Support activities planned around the tournament include
a beach reclamation project in Pattaya Bay, programmes for underprivileged
children in Pattaya and kids clinics for aspiring young tennis players.
