Naklua’s “Walking Street” market will reopen for a
third year Dec. 3, this time offering food as its main attraction.
Deputy Culture Minister Somchai Meechuporn attended a
Nov. 24 planning meeting for the street fair along with Pattaya City
Council members and culture specialists. The market will run 6-9 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays through Jan. 9 in front of the Government Savings
Bank Naklua branch. Food, rather than product sales, is being pushed for
this year’s edition.
A concert from entertainer Khanom Jeen and
performances from Pattaya students will highlight the street’s opening
day.
Launched in 2009 by Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome
as a way to return tourism Naklua, the “Walking Street” market has seen
is share of problems, including traffic jams, merchants closing early,
and mundane selection of goods. The market was shuttered prematurely in
2009 and has seen its run in Naklua shortened each of the two following
years.
