DINING OUT &  KHUN OCHA'S COOKBOOK

An inexpensive evening - sealed with a Kiss?

Anyone who has been in Pattaya for some time must have eaten at Kiss Food and Drink. They have three outlets, one on the corner of Second Road and Soi Diana, one on the corner of Second Road and North Road (looking at the Dolphin Roundabout) and one on Siam Country Club Road, about one kilometer from the Railway Road cross-over.

Many years ago, when we first arrived in Pattaya, the first Kiss restaurant was one of our favorites as the hygiene standards were better than most others, and the prices were most affordable. It also had a good range of European food for those who were a trifle wary of Thai cuisine.

The dôcor in the Siam Country Club Road one is simple and half of the restaurant area is in a very airy section along one side, while the other half is more enclosed and covered. With the weather being very mild at present, we chose the very airy section.

The kitchen is along one side and is open one and all stainless steel. With a constant stream of diners, the kitchen staff is kept very busy, but they still have time for a smile. Clean wooden tables and padded chairs complete the picture. The staff were kitted out with green polo shirts and black aprons. Clean and comfortable being the ambience.

The menu is one which is used in all three Kiss Food and Drink restaurants, and begins with American breakfasts for around B. 70, depending upon whether you want ham, bacon or sausage with your scrambled eggs, tea or coffee. Make that fried or boiled eggs and it is even cheaper. If an Asian breakfast of kow tom is your choice, then it is even cheaper again generally around B.50.

After the breakfasts page comes Burgers and Sandwiches. These range between B. 30 to B. 45 with a bacon, egg and cheese burger at the top end of the burgers and a club sandwich which, under B. 75, is the most expensive sandwich.

Both Thai and Continental food is covered, with most of the Thai standard dishes, such as stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts, well under B. 100. Continental favorites are under B. 200 and even the most expensive dishes such as fried snapper (tub tim) under B. 250.

There is also a special dinner menu which runs from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. with pasta carbonara B. 130, fillet of sea bass B. 160 and beef stroganoff also B. 160.

I decided on the kai yat sai (stuffed Thai omelet) which was only B. 75, and with a Heineken at B. 75 made for a filling meal for B. 130. As I mentioned before, Kiss Food and Drink is not expensive. Madame had asked for the stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts and an adequate serving arrived hot to the table, and not lacking in cashews either. Mention must be made of the size of the serves. More than adequate, though obviously not trenchermen quantity for the price. However, one dish was more than enough for both of us.

We found the same smiling service as we had so many years ago, and the young waiter was almost running in his haste to make sure we received our meals promptly. The meals are not elaborate, and at the price it would be wrong to expect otherwise; however, they were correctly cooked, nicely presented and the portions were of adequate size. If you are looking for a meal which will not break the bank in any way, then you should keep Kiss Food and Drink in mind. We will be going again, and that is for certain. If you can’t make it there in person, then they do a takeaway service as well. Really, a complete restaurant which owes its success to the principles of good food, clean and affordable. It is no wonder there are now three outlets in Pattaya.

Kiss Food and Drink, 111/8 Siam Country Club Road, around 20 meters past the ornamental bridge over the road and about one km from the Railway Road intersection. Ample parking in forecourt. Telephone 038 427 788. Open 24 hours.

French Onion soup (for English speakers)

French Onion soup is one of those dishes that everyone knows and everyone has tried, but unfortunately can be incorrectly prepared. This recipe is close to the original, is easy to prepare but relies on sherry and tasty cheddar cheese for its flavors.

Ingredients                Serves 4
Large onions (sliced)     6
Butter                          2 tbspns
Lemon zest from one lemon
Beef stock cubes         3
Water                         2 liters
Sherry                        4 tbspns
Cheddar cheese (grated) 8 tbspns
Whole-wheat toast       4 slices
Ground black pepper to taste

Cooking Method

Dissolve the beef stock cubes in the two liters of water. Fry onions in butter until soft. Now add the beef stock and zest of lemon and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain off the zest and add the sherry. Prepare four soup bowls and place one slice of toast in each. Pour the soup over the toast and top with two tablespoons of cheese. Grind some black pepper over the cheese and place in microwave for a few seconds until the cheese starts to melt and then serve immediately.
