good scores were recorded.

Tukata Thompson had a 507 series for Tea Party. Morn Mack was best for
Indiana with a 522 series.

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Tuesday podium
placers (from the left): Mark Bell Neil Lavery and Dennis Persson.
Monday, November 21, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
What a day at Khao Kheow today, not hot, just right for
golf and with greens like lightning; a 4-putt was considered good for some
of us! The course is looking great with the amount of money the management
has spent over the last few months, it really is quite spectacular.
Playing A and B off the yellow tees made for a tough day
out for most of the 22 Outbackers with some of the stableford scores as low
as the upper teens and early 20s. We welcomed back Bob Maloney, Don Everett
and Wayne Waywood, as well as a couple of guests from the East, Bill Conway
and his mate Gerry Shannon.
Dennis Pelly (35pts) continues to be the man to catch,
not only in terms of winning tournaments but also as a handicapper, as he
remains very consistent yet just under the radar by residing in the buffer
zone on our EGA handicapping system. He has just recently joined the PSC and
after his handicap record was handed over to Joe Mooneyham (PSC Golf
Chariman) he received a handicap of exactly 10, against his 10.8 with us; so
not much difference.
Dennis is also leading our Big Mango Properties sponsored
“Best 6 cards for the month”, in what appears to be a two horse race between
him and Owen Walkley. He (Dennis) has 209 points and Owen has 191. Bob
Lindborg is still giving chase, a little way back on 159, but only has five
counting at the moment.
Jon Kittilsen arrived from Norway recently, clearly
raring to go, with the top score of the day (38pts) to give him a win in Div
B, closely followed by Alan Ansell, who has won here before and must like
the course.
There were only two ‘2’s from Steve Plant on A3 and Bob
Lindborg on A5.
Div A (0–14)
1st Dennis Pelly (12/Hi10.8) 35pts
2nd Amarjit Banwaitt (7/6.5) 34pts
3rd Owen Walkley (10/9.7) 32pts
4th Bob Maloney (14/Hi13) 30pts
Div B (15+)
1st Jon Kittilsen (22/Hi19.9) 38pts
2nd Alan Ansell (23/20.9) 37pts
3rd Bill Conway (33/Hi29.7) 35pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (18/Hi16.2)
30pts
Tuesday, November 22,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
As with the report from Khao Kheow, the weather here
continues to be absolutely amazing with clear blue sunny skies together with
a good breeze to keep you cool, you just couldn’t find better conditions
anywhere. So why is it that generally everybody is struggling to beat
handicap over recent weeks as the first division boys could do no better
than the 33 points achieved by Neil Lavery, with the Turnip himself taking
second on 32.
Div B did a little better as Jim Payne took that with 35,
beating Paul Smets on count back and Jon Kittilsen Monday’s winner at Khao
Kheow) third on 34; but finding himself playing off 18 today as opposed to
22 at Khao Kheow as a result of the different rating of the two courses plus
a little handicap cut of 1.2.
To speculate on the lower than usual scoring, it would
most likely be the scary quick greens, which are becoming very tough to read
for pace and line plus they are now quite hard and it is difficult to get
the ball to stay on the putting surface. In addition, they have watered the
aprons of many of the holes rendering the links style short approach shot
(attempting to get the ball just to hop up onto the green) completely out of
the question.
The DeVere sponsored Eclectic has only three rounds to go
before the end of the month and Dennis Persson is out in front on 54 points,
followed by John Cogan (52) and Chad (51).
There were three ‘2’s from Chad (hole 5), Neil Lavery
(hole 7) and Raji (hole 16).
Div A (0-16)
1st Neil Lavery (9/11.1) 33pts
2nd Dennis Persson (14/Hi15.8)
32pts
3rd Mark Bell (9/Hi10.2) 29pts
4th Billy Fitzgerald (12/Hi13)
28pts
Div B (17+)
1st Jim Payne (26/hi26.7) 35pts
2nd Paul Smets (21/Hi22) 35pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (18/Hi18.7) 34pts
4th Bob Davies (21/Hi22) 27pts
Wednesday,
November 23, Burapha – Stableford
Steve Mann had already announced that he was pleased to
be back in Thailand after his three week trip back home to Aus, and went on
to celebrate with a win at Burapha on the C & D nines from the white tees.
His 35points earned the premier division win from 1 handicapper (playing off
0) Dave Buchanan (34pts) who is always there or thereabouts, with another
Burapha regular and the also very steady, John Cunningham, who was third
with 33.
Ivan Plunkett in Div B got it all going right with the
day’s top score of 39, for which he received a 2 shot handicap reduction as
the course played tougher than par and he beat Andy Robertson, two shots
back on 37.
There were four ‘2’s; two on hole C5 from Ian Heddle &
Dave Buchanan, Steve Dodd on C8 and Owen Walkley on D8.
Div A (0-13)
1st Steve Mann (11/10.7) 35pts
2nd Dave Buchanan (0/1.2) 34pts
3rd John Cunningham (7) 33pts
4th Mark Bell (10/10.3) 33pts
Div B (14+)
1st Ivan Plunkett (23/Hi22) 39pts
2nd Andy Robertson (14/Hi13.3)
37pts
3rd Andy Makara (28/Hi27.1) 33pts
4th John Locke (16) 32pts
Friday, November 25, Green
Valley – Stableford
Today, apart from three golfers, the golf course was the
winner of the day, with a field of 44 players and the wind blowing a gale it
made for very interesting golf.
We welcomed back from the Old Country, Bob Hope, Terry
Bate and Ken Smith, friends of Bob Lindborg, and also Max Millee, playing
with the Outback for the first time. Bryce Stick leaves tomorrow (Sat) back
to the land of Aus. after his bonus fortnight here, during which he played
some very acceptable golf.
Scoring out there today was very ordinary some of the
scores being in the teens, something you don’t see that often; although the
Capt’, who has been playing so badly, is beginning to think anything over 25
points would be classed as great.
The course is in fantastic condition at the moment with
fast greens but in some places on the fairway it was a bit wet from
excessive watering which would hardly be anything to complain about.
Our two new monthly competitions, sponsored by Big Mango
Properties and DeVere are coming to a close for the first month and the
DeVere Eclectic is incredibly close with just two rounds to go, with three
all tied on 54 points; Dennis Persson, John Cogan & Chad.
The Big Mango “Best 6 cards”, also with two round left,
continues to be led by Dennis Pelly on 209 points, who is way ahead of Owen
Walkley (193pts), who is battling with Bob Lindborg (191pts) for second
place,
There were seven ‘2’s today from Bob Maloney (hole 4),
Mark McDonald, Steve Plant & Andy Robertson (hole 9), Raji & Bob Maloney
(hole 12) and Mark McGuffin (hole 16).
Div A (+1–11)
1st Mark McDonald (2Hi3.2) 37pts
2nd Andy Butterworth (9/Hi10) 34pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (10/Hi10.8) 33pts
4th Amarjit Banwaitt (5/Hi6.6)
32pts
Div B (12–16)
1st John Locke (16) 40pts
2nd Bob Maloney (13/Hi13.1) 35pts
3rd Joe Mooneyham (14/Hi14.8) 34pts
4th Ken Little (16) 34pts
Div C (18+)
1st Greg Hill (20) 40pts
2nd Kevin Hamilton (18/17.6) 34pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (19) 32pts
4th Barry Lewis (29/Hi28) 32pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or

Monday,
November 21,
Khao Kheow A & B – Stableford
Two late cancellations left a field of 30 golfers and
your writer was out for a couple of weeks due to back problems so ‘The
Admiral’ and Mick O’Connor were responsible for the organizing and I thank
them for that.
After welcoming Jean Pierre Malaper from France the
contingency departed the Kronny at 0815 hrs as scheduled in four mini vans
and arrived at the course 43 minutes later. The first group teed off at 0934
hrs, 26 minutes ahead of the allotted time in conditions which were great
for golf. The golf course was reported to be in “average” condition but the
greens were very good. A fairly quick round was enjoyed by all and took four
hours and twenty minutes.
Poor old Mick O’Connor was up to his old tricks as not
only did he forget to take the starting sheet to the first tee he forgot to
put his “undies” on after his after game shower. In addition to that he was
spotted being pulled out of a bunker by Elias Magnusson after falling into
it in the process of playing a shot! Mick volunteered this information to me
afterwards so there is no chance that he will be offended by it being made
public.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 22
and B Flight for 23 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all
four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth.

Elias Magnusson, The Admiral &
Leif Kirkgaard
There were some very good scores on the day and Leif
Kirkgaard won the A Flight with 40 points from Neils Hansen on 37 points in
second place. A count back for third & fourth saw Don Richardson edge out
Andre Barril, both with 34 points and Mike Winfield finished fifth with 31
points.
The B Flight was easily won by Susanne Gaarde with a fine
41 points, seven points clear of Frank Donnelly in second spot. J C Lhoste
finished third with 33 points and Ulla Ravn edged Gordon Clegg for fourth
spot after both finished on 31 points.
A Flight (0-23)
1st Leif Kirkgaard (19) 40pts
2nd Neils Hansen (14) 37pts
3rd Don Richardson (10) 34pts

The Compass Cap was once again won by Dick Braimbridge
and Deefa the Dog was paraded around by big Kenny Bernek to collect lots of
donations to charity from the Kronny Crew.
Wednesday, November 23,
The Emerald – Stableford
Due to a fantastic response we had to increase our tee
spots from 5 to 8 but it was disappointing to have one “no show” on the
morning to reduce our numbers to 31.
Departing the Kronny 5 minutes early at 0810 hrs in three
mini vans they arrived at Emerald 45 minutes later and were able to get the
first group away 15 minutes early at 0945 hrs. The weather was reported as
being very hot and the golf course was in good shape although they had to
persevere with mostly sanded greens.

Svend Gaarde with his Hole in
One certificate.
The full round was completed in four hours and thirty
minutes without any incidents of note although Mick O’Connor, co-organiser
on the day this time managed to arrive back at the Kronny to find that he’d
left his golf shorts back at Emerald. Mick is departing for a stint in the
UK next week and I have promised him I will provide him with a travel check
list to use before he leaves Pattaya.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 19
and B Flight for 20 and over. We had rewards for nearest the pin on all four
par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
A Flight was won by Andre Van Dyk with 36 points and in a
count back for second and third Daryl Evans finished ahead of Mike Allidi,
both on 35 points. Dr Paul Cardwell was fourth with 34 points and a three
way count back saw Ulf Larsson take fifth spot from Neils Hansen & Allan
“Jaidee” Traneker, all with 33 points.
Mr Forgetfullness, Mick O’Connor shot a fine 40 points to
win the B Flight, just 1 point ahead of Susanne Gaarde in second place. In a
count back for third & fourth, both with 37 points Joe Vanderwegen just
pipped Bo “mum to be” Cardwell and Svend Gaarde came fifth with 34 points.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Andre Van Dyk (15) 36pts
2nd Daryl Evans (18) 35pts

Long Putts: 9th Ken Bernek; 18th Mick O’Connor (He
reckons it was 78ft 8in.)
Thursday, November 24,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
With a last minute cancellation due to sickness we fell
one short again of our full complement of 32 golfers and there were welcomes
for Terry Haddon from Dorset, UK, Paul Sharples back for a brief stay from
his work in Oman, Jorn Hansen (making it 3 Hansen males for the day) from
Denmark & Tony Berry from Wales. Gordon Clegg was playing his last game for
a while as he was returning to his work in Saudi Arabia after 3 weeks of R &
R so there was a Bon Voyage for him.
“Let’s go” called the Admiral and the four mini vans were
loaded up and left the Kronny just a tad after the scheduled 0815 hrs
departure time. After a 38 minute drive the group arrived at Pleasant Valley
and without too much delay the first group teed off at 0937 hrs, 23 minutes
earlier than the booking time. The weather was reported as being good with
swirling winds and the condition of the course was OK although The Admiral
noted that some bunkers needed attention and there were several hazards not
marked. The full round was completed in the good time of four hours &
fifteen minutes.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 19
and B Flight for 20 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all
four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly an “Ace” on the
13th by Svend Gaarde who kept the Caf้ Kronborg Golf
Hole in One tradition continuing as it was our fourth of the year.
Apparently Svend hit a 5-wood 152 yards into the wind and many thanks to
Pleasant Valley management for providing him with a Hole in One certificate
before he left the clubhouse.
There were some very good scores on the day and none
better than the 41 points by Leif Kirkgaard who won the A Flight from Walter
Baechli with 40 points. Takeshi Hakozaki finished third on 38 points and in
a three-way count back for fourth & fifth places on 35 points Tony Berry (17
point back nine) shaded Mike Allidi (15 point back nine) with Maurice
Herbergs just missing out.
B Flight was decided by another three-way count back with
Elias Magnusson (22 point back nine) taking first spot from J C Lhoste (20
point back nine) and in third place was Susanne Gaarde (20 point back nine),
all three on 40 points. A count back for fourth & fifth saw Svend Gaarde (20
point back nine) edge out Dave Richardson (19 point back nine), both having
37 points.
It was interesting to note that the A flight winner was
72 years old and the B Flight winner was aged 71 – that’s what Pattaya does
for you!
A Flight (0-19)
1st Leif Kirkgaard (19) 41pts
2nd Walter Baechli (17) 40pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (15) 38pts
4th Tony Berry (9) 35pts
5th Mike Allidi (1) 35pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Elias Magnusson (20) 40pts
2nd J C Lhoste (24) 40pts
3rd Susanne Gaarde (29) 40pts
4th Svend Gaarde (27) 37pts
5th Dave Richardson (26) 37pts
Near Pins: 5th Leif Kirkgaard; 8th
Ernst Hansen; 13th Svend Gaarde (Hole in One); 17th
Walter Baechli
Long Putts: 9th Jorn Hansen;
18th Paul Cardwell
The Compass Cap was won by Paul Sharples and big Kenny
Bernek took Deefa the Dog around for a walk, collecting many donations from
the generous Caf้ Kronborg crew.

The splendour of Soi Dao
PSC golf from The Golf Club

The scribe Bob Newell with Ally on the 1st at
Soi Dao.
Bob Newell
Monday, November 21, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Martin Zimmerman (16) 36 pts
2nd Karsten Kristensen (8) 35pts
3rd John McCall (14) 35pts
4th David Hutchison (0) 35pts
With a heavy week’s schedule ahead of us one or two guys
decided on taking a break and getting ready for the Soi Dao trip, however it
was good to welcome back some regulars and a couple of newbies. Amongst them
were Cliff Wenzel, Noel Pittard, David Hutchison, John McCall, Jay Burns and
Ian Brimble, nice guys all and some pretty handy golfers too!
For the places we had count backs for what seemed the
umpteenth time lately, with the 3 guys locked on 35 points. Suffering worst
was our senior pro from Australia, David Hutchison, and he took 4th.
One better and this time having to go down to a back 6 count back was one of
our Scotsmen, John McCall.
Taking second spot was Karsten Kristensen with a nice
solid round of golf. But topping the lot and one point better was Martin
Zimmerman, who continues well in his quest to chop some shots off his
handicap.

The Karaoke gang in full
voice.
Tuesday, November 22 – Soi Dao (Day 1)
A Flight
1st Bob Newell (7) 40pts
2nd Kyle Roadley (5) 36pts
3rd Mark Reid (9) 35pts
4th Ernie McInerny (9) 35pts
5th Dale Shier (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Mike Craighead (17) 37pts
2nd Keith Worboys (13) 37pts
3rd Joe Mooneyham (15) 37pts
4th Gary Emmett (17) 34pts
5th Brad Gearie (14) 34pts
Near Pins: Mark Reid, Bob Newell, Mike Craighead,
John McCall
With a whopping 41 players and assorted wives and
girlfriends this was shaping up to be a trip of outstanding success and we
were not let down. A big thank you goes out from all at the Golf Club for
continuing to support our endeavours and making these away trips so
memorable.
It was also promising to be a trip with top-class golf,
courtesy of no fewer than 16 single figure handicappers and 3 current
professional tour caddies in Kyle ‘roachy’ Roadley (Marcel Siem), Mark
‘woody’ Sherwood (Peter Hanson) and Lee Adelly (Ian Woosnam). These guys are
all great supporters of the Golf Club and have lavished some fantastic golf
memorabilia on the bar and, to cap it all, they are top blokes and none too
shabby at knocking the ball around.

Vic Hester after his 41
points at Treasure Hills.
Continuing the theme of top blokes and generosity we had
some superb prizes donated by Dale ‘catalogue man’ Shier and Paul ‘Champ’
McNally which enabled us to have near pin prizes on all 4 par 3’s on both
days, 4 bottles of booze from Dale and through Paul’s company, Champ, goody
bags of soft spike sets, quality spike wrench, shoe horn, tees etc. All
excellent products from the Champ range. Paul also presented every player
with a collection of their newly designed golf tees.
With a 2-tee start and white tee competition we ventured
out in beautiful sunshine, taking in all the magnificence this course has to
offer. Whilst never in truly great condition, course-wise, its still a
fantastic playing experience.
With this many players we had 2 flights, with the cut off
being made at 12. In ‘B’ flight it was no surprise to find us using count
back again on all 5 places. Fighting it out on 34 points were 2 of our
Antipodean boys Brad ‘flyboy’ Gearie and Gary ‘Mr Concrete’ Emmett. Gary
‘laid’ (get it?) into Brad and ‘cemented’ 4th place.
Yet again our top 3 couldn’t be separated first time
around, all on 37. Now these were the serious athletes. Liberal amounts of
horse liniment and counterpain couldn’t, however, disguise the squeaky sound
of plastic hips and knees and bad backs though. Through the marvels of
modern medicine our 3 BUPA sponsored lads battled it out finishing in the 1,
2, 3 order of Mikey ‘Michelle’ Craighead, ‘smokin’ Keith Worboys and ‘mighty
joe’ Mooneyham. Well done boys, top class stuff.
In the senior flight, surprise, surprise, we had a count
back for 3rd, 4th and 5th,
35 points being the score this time. Fittingly one of the sponsors, Dale,
got in the frame but, sadly for him, it was only 5th
spot. Ernie ‘big’ McInerny edged him out for 4th and,
after the early stress of misplacing his car keys and thus having no kit,
Mark ‘H2O’ Reid nabbed 3rd, thanks to a quality back
9.
Roachy managed something his pro player didn’t all year,
and that was to finish second and clear with his 36 point offering. But on
this occasion, way out in front with an impressive 40 points, and I cant
think of a nicer bloke for it to have been, was me! Unlucky son!
All that was left then was the evening’s frolics and
festivities. With the karaoke booked and lashings of beer, red wine, vodka,
cheese and biscuits piled high there was only ever one outcome, some great
fun and sore heads the next day.
Wednesday, November 23 – Soi Dao (Day 1)
Blue Tees
1st Jay Burns (4) 34pts
2nd Kyle Roadley (5) 32pts
3rd Steve Mulberry (11) 32pts
4th John McHugh (9) 31pts
White Tees
1st Gary Emmett (17) 33pts
2nd Brad Gearie (14) 32pts
3rd Steve Coughlan (33) 31pts
4th Jean Morel (19) 30pts
Near Pins: John Emmerson, Kyle Roadley, Simon
Kendall, Joe Mooneyham
Day two’s competition varied in that there was a separate
blue tee option for those monster hitters who were on the trip. At almost
7,200 yards it was not for the faint hearted and, surprisingly, there were
plenty of takers. Being one of the shorter hitters I’d rather have stayed
away from them but, being the previous day’s winner, a mixture of personal
pride and plenty of goading insured I’d be teeing it up with the big boys.
Looking at the winners list there were 2 or 3 names that
cropped up the day before but mostly it was new faces on the podium, on
these trips I always like to see the prizes being shared out as much as
possible.
In the white flight a minor miracle occurred, there was
no count back! Jean Morel prevented an Aussie clean sweep of the places by
taking 4th with 30 points. One better was Steve
Coughlan. Steve is another who is a great supporter of the Golf Club when
he’s over and it was good to see him in the money. That Brisbane belter Brad
Gearie followed his placing on the first day , this time he got second with
32. Top of the pile and the third of the Aussies was Steve’s sidekick Gary
Emmett, which concluded a successful trip for him.
In the blue flight it was certainly a different golf game
back there and it was no surprise to find 4 of the longer hitters occupying
the places. Johnnie McHugh, put together a 31 point total for 4th
and one of his brothers-in-arms, Steve Mulberry, got 3rd,
just losing out on the dreaded count back to Roachy. Roachy’s 2nd
place, along with the previous days 2nd and today’s
near pin rounded off what was probably the best individual performance of
the trip. That near pin was, by all accounts, rather special. A 5 iron from
220 into a wind to a few feet! That’s not right mate!
But the man of the match performance of the day belonged
to the 4 handicapper Jay Burns. Getting anywhere near handicap off those
tees was a really terrific performance.
So, all that was left was to make our way back to town,
presentation at the Golf Club and start planning our next trip!
Friday, November 25,
Treasure Hills – Stableford
1st Vic Hester (15) 41pts
2nd Jay Burns (4) 37pts
3rd Brad Gearie (14) 35pts
Rounding off a hectic week of golf saw us take on the
tough challenge of the lovely Treasure Hills. Still undergoing a huge tree
planting and tee box restoration programme meant one or two temporary tees
but, nevertheless, it was in great shape with, perhaps, some of the best
greens we’ve played on all year. They were fast, true and undulating, fine
if you’re a great putter, not so if you’re a little shaky with the short
stick!
Following up his good play down at Soi Dao, Brad Gearie
notched 3rd place with a very good 35 points,
testament to some very solid and consistent golf of late. Unluckiest guy of
the day and also a man with good current form was Jay Burns. He blitzed the
back nine, making 3 birdies and finishing with a great 37 points (usually
good enough to win here) only to find someone had turned in a simply
outstanding performance.
Announcing on the first that he thought we should play
sixes, not a team game, because he hadn’t played for 5 weeks, Vic Hester
then proceeded to blast it round the front nine in one over gross for a huge
24 points! Making my decision to play with him in an England/Scotland match
against the Wood/McCall pairing the best thing I did all day. Not quite so
effective on the back he still amassed a grand total of 41 and cruised home
the winner.

Pat leads the Irish boys
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Pat Regan.
Sunday, November 20, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Regan (15) 41pts
2nd Mark Wood (9) 38pts
3rd Peter Larsson (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Barry Tregurtha (18) 38pts
2nd Don Lehmer (19) 36pts
3rd Jez Lees (17) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Mick Prideaux; No 9 Kevin Mcentee;
No 12 Don Lehmer; No 16 Eddy Beilby.
A Flight’s young Pat Reagan, freshly back in town, was
man of the match with 41 points on the friendly confines of Green Valley.
Mind you, he needed nearly every one of those shots as Aberdeen’s favorite
son Mark Wood was just three shots back to take the silver, followed a
further shot back by Peter Larsson who blew the whistle on Terry Mangan in a
count back for the bronze. Colum Mullen’s even par round was good only for a
mention.
Since joining the society on a regular Sunday basis,
Barry Tregurtha has found the pickings a little easy and finds it hard
leave. Barry was again the top man in the junior flight with a solid 38
points. Don ‘I’m getting married in the morning’ Lehmer returned an even par
round to join Barry on the podium steps but at a lower level. Quadrumvirates
of players were log jammed a further shot back and ‘The Principal’s’ maths
added up more favorably than Eddy ‘the Eagle’s. Big Liam McGuinness and Mike
‘the mechanic’ were left at sea level and satang less. (Let’s hope Jez’s
luck as finally changed.)
By the time this issue hits the streets the Co. Offaly
gang will have returned to Ireland for their regular visit to Sand Baggers
Anonymous.
Six 2’s were recorded on the day.
Monday, November 21,
Crystal Bay B &C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Andrew Byrne (11) 40pts 2nd
Conner Doyle (15) 38pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (15) 37pts
B Flight
1st Mo Lamkin (21) 42pts
2nd Tom Gorey (22) 41pts
3rd Christy Knight (21) 41pts
By society standards it was a relatively quiet day as the
field fell into two lucrative flights. I will fail to mention that last
Sunday’s hole in one boy Peter Henshaw’s 28 points was the lowest score in
his flight. Peter it seems is still celebrating his hole in one feat, this
omission at his own request.
Mo Lamkin built up some points (and loot) just in time to
pay for his taxi to the airport. Mo’s 42 points was the best of the day and
a junior fight winning score. A pair of Micks (sorry Colum) were holding
down second and third spots thanks to a count back which favored Tom Gorey
over Christy Good Knight as both finished on 41 points.
It was the same old story in the senior flight as Andrew
‘you know who, from you know where’ finished on 40 rock solid points. Conner
Doyle from the same place took the silver two strokes back. It was Tora Tora
all the way for the bronze as Takeshi Hakozaki emerged from a three-way
count back. Michal Goggin and for the second time in two games the out of
luck Terry Mangan received nothing.
Takeshi Hakozaki san and Tom Gorey split a very healthy
2’s pot.
Wednesday, November 23,
Greenwood A & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Reagan (15) 40pts
2nd Peter Hynard (13) 37pts
3rd Conner Doyle (13) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 39pts
2nd Peter Wallace (23) 39pts
3rd Michael Goggin (17) 35pts
Young Pat Regan was man of the match and top in A Flight
as he finished just one stroke short of Sunday’s 41 points. Let’s hope Pat
keeps playing like this as his new on the way handicap will require it.
It was good to see Peter ‘the right honorable’ Hynard
climbing the podium steps as he returns to form, not that anyone doubted
that he soon would. Ireland’s Conner Doyle made it to the podium again this
week as his 34 points completed the A Flight payees.
The laurels in B Flight went to the ‘Welsh Wizard’ Mike
Jeffreys as he edged Peter Wallace on count back as both were locked on 39
points. The Donkey did a bit of mental arithmetic with a calculator (yes I
know) to sort out the final place as a quadrumvirate of players was log
jammed on 35 points. Adam Oyston, Pierre Bietry and Paul Robinson were the
unlucky lads as Michael Goggin took the bronze.
J P Maffrey and Jan Erikssen split the 2’s pot.
Friday, November 25,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Mcentee (7) 37pts
2nd Andrew Byrne (11) 35pts
3rd Chaten Patel (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Peter Wallace (23) 34pts
2nd Christy Knight (21) 29pts
3rd Lew Szigligeti (19) 28pts
The leader of the Co. Offaly gang Kevin Mcentee was the
story of the day as the society braved a Friday Sukhumvit to take a trip to
Mountain Shadow. Kevin’s 37 point return was the only card that bettered
par, and so took the senior flight and man of the match honors. Kevin put a
two shot gap on fellow gang member Andrew Byrne (not to worry lads there off
soon) while Chaten ‘Raj’ Patel stopped the Irish boys in their tracks as he
gained a count back decision over Conner Doyle for third.
The junior flight struggled today as Irishman Peter
Wallace took the top place with 34 points. Compatriot Christy ‘Good’ Knight
retuned 29 points for the silver and Aussie Louis Szigligeti, who for the
sake of fitting in the allotted slot will hereafter be known as Zig Zag,
took the bronze and once again stopped the Irish boys from clearing up as
the crafty Sean Murphy was waiting in the wings.
Goodbye to Kevin, Scotland’s Reg McKay and Eddy Delaney
(two Irishmen again) shared the 2,s pot. If my maths is correct the Irish
lads have filled half the podium places this past week.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us can just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin a ring on 089

Dan M has a big win at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society

Dan M celebrates his win with
the staff outside Kisses Bar.
Another Friday and another day out for the Backyard Golf
Society at the Emerald Golf Course on November 25. With the car park being
half full on arrival we feared the worst and were not disappointed. Tourist
season has finally arrived so we will have to get use to some slow rounds
over the next few months.
Seven players this week with everyone competing in all
competitions. JJ did well coming in with 38 points but Dan M overshadowed
this with a very good score of 43 points to take the win and a very large
cut in his handicap for next week! JJ’s consolation was taking nearest the
pin prize plus (5) skins with other skin results as follows: Dan M (9), Mike
(2), Micky (1) and one rolled over until next week.
Congratulations goes to Neville for his win at Jomtien’s
yearly club championship.
Nigel nicks it by one
Diana November Seniors & Ladies Open

Left to right: Nigel Cannon,
Vivianne Sundquist, Jenny, and John Connery.
Thursday
November 24 - Pattaya Country Club
It was a fine sunny day with a little breeze at the
popular local Pattaya Country Club where the 33 competitors were greeted in
the usual friendly manner by the staff. The course was in good condition and
also busy but thanks to an efficient starter we were all away on time with
rounds of about 4hrs 15min.
There were just 5 ladies today with both Vivianne
Sundquist (H/cap 18) and Barbra Spets (29) coming in with 30 points.
Vivianne declared the winner on count back.
It was the same situation in the Seniors with both John
Connery (21) and Archie Martin (20) scoring 36 points with John the winner.
In the Super Seniors it was the organizer and scribe -
Nigel Cannon (24) with best of the day 39 points and runner-up Chris John
(21) a point behind with 38.
Before the formal presentation Nigel welcomed a group of
Irish friends as well as a regular group from Scandinavia just arrived.
As this was the last Diana for 2011 Nigel thanked Alan
Pearce who had calculated results for all 11 competitions and also thanked
Jenny and the staff at PCC for help he received.
As a postscript, what else did your correspondent take
away from PCC? On his door mirror was a rather ugly black snake! Tried to
shake it off with no success, stopped near some MC taxi men - they just
laughed - but a Thai man came from a shop with a big stick and knocked it
off!

Begorrah it’s the boyo’s bogey
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Tuesday’s top two with the
staff at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday,
November 22 - Phoenix G.C.
Last month we played a ‘bogey’ competition for the
first time. It seemed to be well received and it was agreed to try it
again this month. How attitudes can change.
Not one player was happy with this format today. In
saying that, possibly the victors of the day were happy. John Bartley
and Eamon Murtagh shared first place with a returning score of -1. Joint
second were Denis Dixon and Richard Baldwin with a score of -2. The rest
were all looking forward to the lucky draw!
I think the problem with this format is that most
players do not feel that they have played a full game of golf. If your
net score reaches bogey or worse you may as well pick up. A lot of
players do not like to pick up until they cannot contribute to their
card at all. So it was unanimously decided to kick this format into
touch after today - back to the relatively easy to understand,
Stableford.
The course today was the Ocean and Mountain in that
order, another confusing item for the day as well. Both nines have the
same stroke indexes and anyone with an odd number as a handicap has to
be careful to take their shots on the correct holes.
However it is nice to report that the course
conditions are now back to the high standard we have come to know in the
past. Phoenix is not regarded as the toughest course in the area, but
the greens, when they are up to speed along with some of the pin
positions are very difficult to score on. Three and four putting is not
uncommon on these greens. They say if you have a good short game
(chipping and putting) then you can score well at Phoenix.
So back at the ranch (the Relax Bar) we spent far too
long trying to sort out everyone’s score (another reason to scrap the
‘bogey’ idea).
Near pins were the only thing straight forward today
and they went to Denis Dixon (2), John Bartley & Eamon Murtagh.
Lucky draw prizes donated by the Relax Bar went to
Bill Hewitt, Roger Ison (who we welcomed back after a long absence) and
Jim Neilson, who after a horrendous day on the course was rewarded with
finally making a par on the last (always the way innit. Say to yourself
I think I will give this stupid game up and then play a blinder on the
last hole. Oh, think I will play again!) Also he was rewarded with the
free massage given by our hosts. After his first drink being given free
and the massage he ended up as the highest value winner on the day -
poetic justice?
Accomplished players with an official handicap are
welcome to join us all for a serious game of golf, but with a lot of
fun. If you are interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for
more information.
If you are not a member of Phoenix Golf Club you can
enjoy a preferential rate of 1,000 Baht green fee as a guest of the
members, but the above qualifying conditions apply.

Tough times at Treasure Hill
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

The scribe Derek Brook (at his
age) holding onto the bar with Alan Sullivan, Brian Parrish, Mick O’Meara,
Pu ‘The Boss’ and the ‘New Girl’.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, November 22,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
A return to the program saw the players joining together
at Bert’s for the trip to Treasure Hill in goodly numbers. As is usual, the
aroma of coffee percolating through the room and of golfers tucking into
breakfast made it a normal golf day at Bert’s.
So off to Treasure Hill and as usual we travelled up
there during what can only be called the rush hour. Mind, once onto Route 7
we normally zoom away, but on this day it was very busy so the trip took a
little longer than usual.
Arriving at the course we noticed the parking area nearly
empty so maybe we would have a clear run. So a quick change and onto the
course where it was one of those days you know it was going to be tough. It
was blowing a gale and we were straight onto temporary tees. Seems like a
lot of repairs are going on at present and we were off these weird tees
several times, however this course is nothing if not severe test of golf.
So away we went on a layout that was hard, difficult and
just generally very testing. And did we have a straight run? No of course we
did not. If there is one more group on the course it always is in front of
you and it is always slow.
Still we ploughed on to challenge the fast greens,
fairways that were well grassed and rough that was tough, until we finally
wended our was to the changing rooms (where we had hot water), and from
there into the restaurant that is well priced with reasonable food. Then it
was into the cars for the drive back to a packed Pattaya and to Tropical
Bert’s.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and the
one noticeable thing was that no one shot their handicap. Indeed the scores
were really low, validation of the difficulty of the day. In the A Flight, 0
to 16, the winner was Brian Parrish with 35 points ahead of Alan Sullivan in
second with 32 points, and in third was John Binns with 31 points ahead of a
gaggle of players on count back.
In the B Flight the winner with 33 points was yours
scribe (Derek Brook) who found himself playing in the second tier; amazing
how Father Time finds us all out. In second place was Steve Middleton with
32 points and in third was Mick O’Meara with 30 points. Then it was back to
Happy Hour. T.T.F.N.

Carmody romps home
at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from the The Fairways Golf Society

Monday’s B Flight winner, Don
Carmody.
Monday, November 21,
Crystal Bay - Stableford
This course is one of the best for value for money at the
moment, so we had a good turnout with two divisions. Surprisingly the lower
handicappers seemed to struggle as first place was taken by Tony Dauth on a
three-way count back with a meagre 32 points (Frank Riley once again being
the bridesmaid). Poor old Frank has not had a first place this trip after
earlier this year cleaning up time and time again. Better luck next year
Frank and Bon Voyage!
Don Carmody cruised to victory in the B flight with a
blistering 39 points, leaving the rest of the field in his wake.
Near pins went to Tony Duthie, Bryan Neal, Simon Kendal &
George Graham.
A Flight
1st Tony Dauth (0) 32pts
2nd Frank Riley (16) 32pts
3rd Steven Balfour (16) 32pts
B Flight
1st Don Carmody (25) 39pts
2nd Ken Meek (22) 35pts
3rd Bryan Neal (18) 35pts
Wednesday, November 23,
Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Just one division today with that man again Bryan Neal
yet again coming in with 39 points for the win, with the rest of the field
way behind. (When is the handicapper going to catch up with him?).
There was a bit of a problem after the start when the
starter allowed the last group to tee off as a five-ball only to change his
mind half way up the fairway. The ‘bus driver’ understandably spat out his
dummy and walked off the course after playing only one shot, so he had to
hang around for a few hours to drive the players back to the Fairways.
Near pins went to Andy Crabb, Richard Hurley, John
Coetzee and Bob Moore.
1st Bryan Neal (18) 39pts
2nd Dave Lowe (8) 35pts
3rd John Coetzee (18) 34pts
4th Tony Duthie (20) 34pts
Friday, November 25,
Greenwood - Stableford
Another day in paradise as the sun was shining down on
us, tempered by a lovely cool breeze on a beautiful golf course. What more
could you ask for … maybe a decent round of golf? Yes, you would have
thought so, but it did not work out like that.
The scores returned were very mediocre to say the least.
Four players recorded 32 points so it was a four-way count back to decide
the places.
John Coetzee beat Tony Duthie for the second time this
week on count back to take first place while even Bryan Neal, who had been
on a tremendous run of form just lately, could not aspire to anything like
30 points.
Near pins went to Pier Cere, George Gambol (2) and Steven
Balfour.
1st John Coetzee (18) 32pts
2nd Tony Duthie (20) 32pts
3rd Ken Meek (22) 32pts
4th Pier Cere (16) 32pts
Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society
is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and plays every
Sun/Mon/Wed & Fri. Anyone wishing to play with us can call into the club
house and put their names down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084

Dave Howden measures up to the task
IPGC golf from The Haven

Dave Howden.
Sunday,
November 20,
Green Valley - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Charlie Sheppard (17) 34pts
2nd J.J. Harney (10) 34pts
3rd Charley Lapsey (9) 33pts
4th John Connolly (21) 31pts
5th Peter Masters (8) 31pts
Having placed only fifth two weeks ago with a return of
three better, Charlie Sheppard could not have been expecting to be amongst
the winners on the day when he returned his card, but after the dust had
settled and all the scores tallied, he not only figured in the final
analysis but won with a better count back of 18 to 15 over the no doubt just
as surprised J.J. Harney in second place.
Charley Lapsey slid into third a further shot worse than
the leading duo and John Connolly got the better of Peter Masters in a count
back for fourth with a better inward half of 18 to 15.
Joe McArdle swept the pool in the 2’s with the sole one
on the day.
Monday,
November 21, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 74
Division 1 (0-12)
1st Barry Wellings (5) 37pts
2nd Rodney Nabbe (10) 35pts
3rd Alan Pilkington (9) 32pts
4th Peter Sumner (8) 32pts
5th Brian Libbey (9) 32pts
Division 2 (13+)
1st Frank Hughes (16) 32pts
2nd Stephen Lewis (18) 30pts
3rd Hideo Akiyama (14) 29pts
4th Mike Spear (22) 28pts
5th Mark Armstrong (21) 28pts
An exceptionally strong field assembled for the month’s
trip to Bangpra where the greens continue to confound the best of them, and
with just one player able to better par the CSS for the day moved out two
strokes to 74, staying just above the required standard to avoid making it a
non-counting for upward review event.

Barry Wellings.
It was only marginally easier for the first division,
with the cut coming at 12, as Barry Wellings, the lowest handicapper in the
field, underscored his class with a two stroke win at one under handicap
with a round that was tightly controlled and just the one three putt on the
day, which was about 4 better than the next best putter on the day.
Rodney Nabbe was the only other competitor to make the
standard of within two of handicap, which was enough to wrap up second spot
by three from a three-way count back between Alan Pilkington, Peter Sumner
and Brian Libbey, with them finishing with 17, 16, and 14 respectively.
The second division understandably found the course that
much more difficult with Frank Hughes getting another win at four over
handicap to win by two from Stephen Lewis in a gritty second spot.
Hideo Akiyama had thought that seven over would not be in
the shake up so was pleasantly surprised to end up in third ahead of Mike
Spear and Mark Armstrong after Mike won a count back with a better 14 to 12.
Tomas Nilsson took the rollover pot in the first division
2’s pool whilst Frank Hughes and Shuichi Kodaka scooped the second division
roll over pool.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Mark Fitzpatrick, Bill Piggott and Daryl Burkett and also welcomed back
Kaneo Watanabe, Hideo Akiyama, Carry Barling, Tomas Nilsson, Jens
Gunnarsson, Wayne Carey, Paul Scully, Kevin Townsend, Stephen Lewis and
Trevor Schirmer.
Wednesday,
November 23,
Greenwood B & C - Stableford
CSS72
Division 1 (0-13)
1st Dave Howden (13) 40pts
2nd Yasuo Suzuki (10) 36pts
3rd Garry Barling (8) 35pts
Division 2 (14+)
1st Roar Berger (26) 36pts
2nd Daryl Burkett (14) 33pts
3rd Wayne Waywood (15) 33pts
Once again another large field travelled up the 321 to
Greenwood, which now seems a lot nearer than before the road improvement
works were completed and again they were presented with a very well prepared
and conditioned course, and without the lightning fast greens the players
were able to score rather better than on the previous outing.
Once again there were two divisions with Dave Howden
spread-eagling the first division by four shots and leaving Yasuo Suzuki
bemoaning the change in the cut from the last competition. This was due to
one or two of the lower handicaps still recovering from the Monday mauling
and taking a rest day, which denied Yasuo a long awaited win, but as always
adversity was met with a huge smile and a long laugh.
Garry Barling won a count back with a better 22 to 19
after a fairly quiet outward half to consign Bob Maloney into fourth place
and still looking for a result on this trip.
The second division was led in by Roar Berger whose level
handicap round was easily good enough to see off the challenges of Daryl
Burkett and Wayne Waywood in second and third as Daryl won the count back by
a margin of 18 to 15.
Surprisingly with such a high quality field in both
divisions, there were no 2’s in either of them.
Prior to the presentations Hal Hart was welcomed as a new
member.
Friday, November 25,
Phoenix (Blue Tees) - Monthly Medals
CSS 77
Division 1 (0-15)
1st Grant Cadell (14) net 76
2nd Bill Piggott (11) net 77
3rd Peter Skinner (9) net 80
4th Garry Barling (9) net 80
Division 2 (16+)
1st John Connolly (21) net 76
2nd Mark Armstrong (21) net 81
3rd Tony Barritt (16) net 81
Ladies (Red Tees)
CSS 72
1st Theresa Connolly (25) net 73
Playing from the back tees in the Monthly Medal always
seems to overawe the majority of the competitors every month, and November’s
Medals were no exception and with only one counting player making the mark
of two above the standard scratch of 74, the CSS for the day moved out to 77
and just stayed in the counting range for upward review.
Again the greens were found to be extremely quick and
poorly positioned approach shots were repaid with an almost certain three
putt which put rather a damper on most of the hopeful’s days even though the
overall condition of the course was excellent, with the fairways in
particular attracting very favourable comments.
As usual two divisions were split at 15 and below without
regard for the numbers participating so as to allow for the Gold and Silver
Medals categories to be played for by all the year’s previous winners on the
23rd December over the same course.
No one was more surprised than Grant Cadell when he
discovered that he had taken the first division with a four over par return
that was just enough to beat out Bill Piggott by a single shot to become the
twelfth different winner in the first division for the year.
Peter Skinner played a bit below his usual standard but
was just good enough over the back nine to win the count back over Garry
Barling with a better 42.5 to 43 after they had both looked possible winners
going out, with neither able to keep up the momentum coming home.
John Connolly, having placed well earlier in the week,
became the tenth different winner in the second division’s chase for a Gold
Medal next month with a five shot victory ahead of Mark Armstrong and Tony
Barritt, with the latter making a welcome return to the winner’s podium, as
Mark won the count back by a margin of 40.5 to 42 after Tony had started
brightly but faded as the length of the course took its toll.
Again it was no surprise to find that there were no 2’s
in any of the divisions as the greens were almost impossible to single putt
without being almost in the hole already.
Note: The Haven group now departs Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am
until further notice. If you would like to play with the group you can
contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between

on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be

Challenges aplenty
for Mulligans golfers
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Mike, Brian & Dave.
Tuesday,
November 22,
Pattana - Stableford
To take advantage of the great value offered by Pattana,
on Tuesday we joined the Pattana Challenge and a good day was had by all,
however we as a group did not play well, so the best we could hope for were
a few lucky draws.
Frans, Dave & Lol were all happy recipients of prizes
offered by the golf club, while Wendy tried her luck at a bit of bingo (sort
of tried) if only she knew those numbers. Jim Federspiel qualified for the
final to be held in December, so good luck to him on the day.
Thursday,
November 24, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Thursday was back to normal scheduling with a visit to
Treasure Hill, where we played from the white tees. The course was playing
tough, with a good breeze blowing throughout the day, but otherwise great
conditions.
Brian Maddox (H/cap 20) played very well in patches to
sign for 34 points, 4 wipes in that score was testament to how well he
played for the majority of the round. Second and third were decided by count
back, with Dave Edwards (18) getting the nod over Mike Morris (11) 17/16,
after both recorded 31 points.
Near Pins were picked up by Mark, Clive & Jeff with 2.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting timely presentations on both days.
Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers
& good golfing!

Scurrell soars at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Left to right: Paul Chabot,
Neville Scurrell (new club champion) and Marty Rock.
Monday, November 21,
Pattana – Stableford
It was our club championship week with a 36 hole
competition over two days on Wednesday and Friday so the majority were
saving themselves, hence only 19 players out today.
The A course here reopens on Dec 1 so it was the B and C
nines yet again and in both divisions 37 points was the winning score with
Jim Connelly taking podium position in division 1, beating the Norwegian boy
Sassa on a 21/15 back nine countback, while Harold G was third on 36. Marty
Aronson topped division 2, with Richard Kings second on 32 points, beating
Eugine Maguire on a 20/19 count back.
Kari Kuparinen birdied B3 and B7 and Chris Voller B3 to
share the pot in the ‘2’s in division 1 while Jef Van Uffelen get a ‘2’ on
C2 to take the division 2 prize.
Wednesday, November 23,
Eastern Star – The Club Championship (round 1)
Our 5th annual Club Championship and we have pondered
over the years as to which golfing format to use and still everyone is happy
with a two-day stableford competition. There were four divisions out today
including the ladies and the cut in division 1 was at 6-15, division 2
(16-19) and 20+ in division 3. Many thanks to Georgio at the Trattoria
Italiana restaurant here in Jomtien for sponsoring all the technical prizes
today, well done Georgio.
Playing off 14, Neville Scurrell came in with 39 points
to win division 1 with Marty Rock on a 10 handicap coming second with 37
points, and Chris Voller in third on 31.
Mike Lewis took out division 2 with 39 point as well,
with Frank Kelly in second place on 34 and Count back Burnie third two
points behind.

Long drives awards were won by Darryl Blair, Colin James,
Bryan Priestley, Alan Pilkington, Cully Monks and Joe Kubon, and the
straightest drives by Toi Blair, Ya Riley, Bryan Rought and Jim Lane.
In the ‘2’s, Marty Rock birdied the 6th in division 1 and
Paul Chabot and Mark H shared the pot in division 2.
Friday,
November 25,

exception of Ning Neal who won the ladies division with 39 points with Miss
Rut second, two points behind.

Mike Missler was second two points behind and Marty Rock took third with 33.
Erik Reginiussen reigned in division 2 beating Bryan

was third with 30.
Jim Lane took the honours in the third division with 34

Rich & Larry take it on count back
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Rich Murphy and Larry Emerson
(left) with Matt and Vance Millar.
The Three Sisters Group changed their usual style today,
this 23rd day of November. Rather than playing singles they decided to do a
two-man scramble and we had a good turnout with 10 teams playing. The
weather was great and the Pattaya Country Club course was in good condition.
There seemed to be a lot of head scratching during the
mathematics arriving at the proper handicaps. All worked out in the end with
two teams coming in with the same leading score. Both the Rich Murphy/Larry
Emerson team and the Matt Millar and his dad, Vance Millar combo had 43
points but on the count back Rich and Larry took the winning position at the
post. The closest from competition were scores in the high 30s.
Back at Caddy Shack II there were the usual snacks and
Herbie provided fat hot dogs and smaller dogs with cheese inside.
Appropriate liquid refreshment was available.
Fair game for the ladies
Dear Sports Ed.
After 10 years, I feel I should voice my thoughts, and
find out if I am alone. Week in week out, I read about ladies on the
winner’s podium in gents tournaments.
I have been playing for 45 years; back home at my club we
maybe had 2-3 mixed games in a golf season. The courses here on average
differ between about 1,000 yards less between the Gents & Ladies tees. In my
10 years I have seen many of these excellent ladies hit over 200 yards and
straight. Lots of the ladies tees take away the hazards on a hole. Golf was
never meant to be a mixed game.
It’s the gents that keep this game going. I agree we need
to accommodate the ladies, but seems crazy that we do not try to separate
them more. This is not sour grapes, or greed, I have always believed the
winnings are too large for amateurs here in Thailand, it’s about the spirit
of the game, and in my mind it’s not fair.
I understand some senior players are allowed to play of
the Red tees, with a handicap adjustment, so why can’t the ladies play off
the gents tees with an adjustment, seems fair. In being fair to the minority
you’re being unfair to the majority.
In 2008 we had the global financial collapse, and it has
not got any better, worse I would say, our currency exchange is 20-30% less.
So what did the PSC do then, they increased the yearly membership & monthly
golf competition fees.
Some bars charge 200 baht (A$6) comp-fee approx, and
complain about the players not coming back. A small suggestion, offer a beer
back at the bar from the comp-fee and reduce the winnings, it worked for me.
I know many who’re struggling, and entering competitions is not in their
budget.
All this and I have not mentioned the disappointing lack
of individual’s knowledge of golf rules here in Thailand. From all this I
play very little now, not a great loss I hear you say. Feel better now I
have got all that of my chest. If published look forward to your fierce
response.

Lamond tops at Emerald
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to the Emerald club in
Ban Chang on Monday, 21st November to play a stableford competition on the
well presented course. The large field was divided into two flights with the
cut coming at 16 and under.
Progress was slow as the course was well populated but
patience told in the end for the golfers with Mr Len managing 33 points for
third in the second flight, three behind second placed Benny Hansen. The
flight winner was Alan Duckett who again performed consistently on the
course.
In the top flight Larry Slattery scored 35 points for
third whilst “Banjo” Bannister went one better for second. The winner
produced the best gross of the day, 77, giving Rob Lamond the best reasons
to smile. His 37 points equalled his best efforts with the group all year
when he has all too often struggled with his game. But today it was all
class.
The only birdie ‘2’ was secured by Chris Walsh on the
fifteenth and the Booby Bevy went to an out-of-form Ken Page for his 8-15
split. The driving range is on the agenda next for the smiling Scot!
All shared at Phoenix
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Phoenix for the first
time in many a month on Wednesday, 23rd November and played a stableford
competition on the Lakes and Ocean Nines. The course was in fine condition
with racing fast greens and a large turnout meant two flights cut at
seventeen and under.
In the second flight, in true partnership Evan Millar and
Orawan Meeraka shared the flight with 33 points with Mr Len coming in third
on 30.
In the top flight Ron Mathews took third place with 32
points on his final round this trip whilst Joe Niisato and Dave Milne shared
the win with 37 points each. Joe also had the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on the
Ocean fifth.
The Booby Bevy went to Evan Millar for managing to score
all the points ranging from zero to five on the back nine and still only
total sixteen for the Ocean. That must be something of a record surely?
Double up for Lamond
Friday, 25th November, saw the Pattaya Golf Society visit
Crystal Bay to play its monthly medal round over the B and C nines which
were in very good condition with medium fast greens. The weather was perfect
with a fresh breeze blowing all day and the golfers found the Legacy deal
was altogether value for money.
The tricky wind made scoring a chore but third place saw
a share of the spoils with Jean Morel and Len Jones both posting competent
net 75’s. In second with an excellent round again was Wichai Tananusorn; his
net 72 was only marred by a double bogey on C3 and a bogey on the relatively
easy final hole. The round of the day was produced by Rob Lamond whose gross
75 included twelve pars and a couple of birdies and was a magnificent effort
giving him net 69.
The only birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Mr Len on the
exquisite par three B6 and the Booby Bevy went to Evan Millar for the second
successive event after a wild OB tee shot on C5 meant three off the tee and
he proceeded to hole the next shot from 170 yards for a par. Crystal Bay was
the perfect way to end the week with the PGS.

Much blood and sweat but no tears for Pattaya Cricket Club

Pattaya Cricket Club played Asia United Cricket Club from
Bangkok at Horseshoe Point in a 40 over game on Sunday 27th November in a
highly absorbing and sometimes bloody encounter.
Electing to bat first, PCC openers Sunny and Debdas
provided a solid platform for the innings with an opening stand of 33 before
Debdas (18) was caught at mid off mistiming a drive. This precipitated an
alarming batting collapse as Zia (5 for 21) the Thai national team fast
bowler extracted pace and bounce to rip the heart out of the PCC middle
order.
At 85 for 6 and at half way a special innings was
required. Sunny, watching as the wickets tumbled around him, was joined by
Sodhi and they set about repairing the carnage. Sunny caressed the ball
majestically to maintain a respectable run rate whilst Sodhi refused to be
flustered as he stubbornly defended his wicket. Sunny’s stroke play was
rewarded as he reached a masterful century that ensured PCC would post a
challenging total.
The innings momentum was continued after Sunny (101) had
departed, caught at long on, by Sodhi (35) and Lucky (23no) and PCC finished
on 222 for 8 from their 40 overs.
The PCC bowlers immediately made their intentions known
to the AUCC opening batsman as a barrage of fast and hostile deliveries from
Jack and Yasir had them hoping around the crease. It was an uncomfortable 10
over spell for Saumik and Vishau but they survived to reach 40 for 0.
A double bowling change saw Sodhi and Mithu alter the
course of the match. Sohdi’s orthodox leg spin and Mithu’s off spin
complimented each other perfectly and wickets began to fall. Sodhi had
Saumik (14) caught off a steepler by Usman who then went straight to
hospital to have 5 stitches inserted in his hand. Vishau was caught by a
diving Jack who left the field with a badly gashed right knee and Zia was
caught by a diving Debdas who left the field with a broken nose having head
butted the turf.
The outfield resembled a blood strewn battlefield and
with only 8 fielders the PCC captain Simon had some interesting fielding
positions to restrict the run rate. But the bowlers performed admirably as
Sodhi (5 for 42) and Mithu (4 for 21) wrapped up the innings (109) and PCC
won by 113 runs.
Man of the match was awarded to Sunny for his dominant
hundred and excellent wicket keeping and a special mention goes to Sodhi for
his mature and skillful all round contribution that belied his years.
PCC’s next game is 4th December verses the formidable
Bangkok Cricket Club at Horseshoe Point, a team who beat PCC last year, so a
battle royal is expected hopefully without the blood.

Record fleet expected at
25th Anniversary Phuket King’s Cup Regatta

Champagne Andaman Sea
conditions will be a big draw for sailing vessels from across the region at
the 25th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is set to celebrate its
25th anniversary this year, welcoming a record fleet of boats and over 1,000
sailors from around the world to compete in Asia’s largest regatta from 3
December to 10 December at Kata Beach.
With strong representation from ASEAN and a growing
number of sailors from China taking part, more than 35 nationalities will
participate in a diverse fleet of craft, from Olympic classes to kiteboards
to the super-high tech ‘grand prix’ racing boats.
Famed for being Asia’s largest big boat regatta, the
Phuket King’s Cup Regatta was founded in 1987 with a mixed fleet of
dinghies, boards and keelboats. Over the years, the Regatta has grown in
size and stature to become the jewel in the crown of the Asia yachting
circuit, welcoming the best-of-the-best from around Asia and beyond to
compete annually in Phuket.
“The Regatta began as a special tribute to His Majesty
the King’s Fifth Cycle, or 60th birthday,” said Kevin Whitcraft, President
of the Organising Committee of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta. “It has grown
to become the most popular and most hotly contested sailing event in Asia.
Phuket King’s Cup competitors enjoy champagne sailing conditions, the
beautiful Andaman Sea backdrop, a series of exciting race locations and the
famous beachfront parties.”

The King’s Cup Regatta launch
and press conference took place at Phuket’s Provincial Hall on Thursday,
November 17. Among those pictured in the photo are Santi Kanchanbandhu,
member of the Organising Committee (5th left); Vice Admiral Taratorn
Kajitsuwan, Commander Third Naval Area Command (6th left); Tri Augkaradacha,
Governor of Phuket (7th left) and Sompong Dabhet, Deputy Mayor of Karon (8th
left).
2011 expects to see up to 50 dinghies take to the start
line on 3rd December for a three-day series. Joining them on Monday 5th will
be over 100 keelboats and multihulls, plus for the very first time, 20
kiteboards. The total sailing fleet is expected to be over 170.
The dinghies will race over three days, from 3rd to 5th
December, and the keelboats, multihulls and kiteboards will race over five
days – 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th, with Thursday 8th being a reserve day.
In 2009, dinghies were re-introduced to the Regatta
line-up after a hiatus. This led the Organising Committee to create the
Phuket Dinghy Series in 2010 – a three-event series preceding the Phuket
King’s Cup Regatta which has grown from strength-to-strength – and a dinghy
classes within the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta fleet itself.
For the first time in the Cup’s history, the organisers,
together with the Kiteboard Tour Asia, have introduced a Kiteboard Class
this year. An invitation-only class for 20 kiteboarders, the Regatta
welcomes Pros from the world tour as well as a number of regional champions,
including two-time Asian Champion from Thailand, Narapichit ‘Yo’ Pudla.
“Our Quarter Centenary year sees the widest diversity in
terms of registered vessels taking part in the Regatta,” explained Kevin
Whitcraft. “2011 will comprise catamarans, keelboats, kiteboards, dinghies
and international racing boats all competing for honours across racing and
cruising categories. It is a testament to the extraordinary appeal of this
classic race that we see such a broad mix of entrants for the Phuket King’s
Cup. The Regatta also connects people from across the world, with
representatives from every continent taking part.”
With the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, the
Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee
under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the
Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province
of Phuket.

City’s winning
run comes to an end
Paul Frain
Pattaya City, who were on a good run with four league
wins on the trot, including a fine 3-1 victory over Cosmos in their previous
match, finally came unstuck on a sweltering day at the Thai Polo Club last
weekend against Bangkok FC.
City were the first to settle in the match and within
five minutes captain Craig Bank opened the scoring when his shot hit the
back of the net after good work by Tshuma and Dipita to put the home team
1-0 up. A superb cross by Supachai again found Banks soon after but he
volleyed it over the bar with only the keeper to beat.
Another opening came after a six man move saw the ball
reach City’s Paul Fox who found himself alone in front of Bangkok’s goal and
only had to side foot the ball home, but he managed to put it wide much to
his disbelief.
City were playing good football even though the heat of
the sun was bearing down and taking its toll, however Bangkok slowly got a
foothold into the game and when their forward blazed a shot over the bar
when it was easier to score, it should have served as a warning to City
whose defence up to that point was playing an effective offside tactic.
City continued to carve out further openings of their own
but they were all squandered and then disaster struck when the Bangkok
forwards beat the offside trap to equalize with the last kick of the first
half to make it 1-1. This was a devastating blow as City had created all the
chances but were only level at half time.
After the interval both teams cancelled each other out
and chances were few and far between. The first real attack of the second
half came when a Bangkok defender picked up a loose ball in his own penalty
area and ran the whole length of the field before crossing the ball to a
colleague who met the ball with an unstoppable volley for Bangkok to take
the lead 2-1.
City begun to wilt in the hot sun and with the Bangkok
players getting stronger they came more into the game. Then City were given
a lifeline when they gained a free kick, just outside the penalty area, A
curling cross by Robespierre was missed by everybody in the crowded box but
lingering at the far post was City’s centre half Philip Walter who thrust
out a leg to equalize and make the score 2-2.
In the last four matches, City have scored some late
goals to win their matches, but it was their turn to be on the receiving end
this time when Bangkok broke through with five minutes left as City’s keeper
was left stranded when the Bangkok’s forward shot into the top of the net,
to make the final result 3-2 to Bangkok FC. If City are going to reclaim
their title they must convert the many chances that they make during their
matches.
The Res game was cancelled last week and they were
awarded their first points of the season with a score line of 3-0 and this
coming week they are at the Thai Polo Club on Saturday, Dec. 3 with the kick
off at 2-30 p.m. and the first team are playing in Bangkok on Sunday.

Goal drought continues
for United

Pattaya United extended the unbeaten run
to seven matches since mid September but were once again unable to find the
back of the net in a dour goalless draw with Police United in Bangkok last
weekend. United remain ahead of last week’s opponents on goal difference
although the Dolphins have played more games than any other team in the
division.
With just five matches to go Pattaya need to find their
scoring touch sooner rather than later if they are to challenge for a top
six position at the end of the season. They will have a good chance in their
next game at home against bottom club Khonkaen in Chonburi on Sunday,
December 4, with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
Chonburi Sharks meanwhile took over second spot from
Muang Thong United after the latter could only draw 2-2 away at BEC Tero and
the Sharks gained maximum points with a 2-0 win at Khonkaen.
League leaders Buriram continued on their winning ways
with a 1-0 victory at Siam Navy that saw the Sattahip club slip into the
bottom two. Sriracha moved up one spot with a valuable point at Osotspa.
