attract a lot of fans to every match. He said more funds would be allocated

management to promote the club.
He added that the paper’s reach across Thailand and the
world would help publicize the team’s activities. Malhotra said the Pattaya
Mail has high hopes Pattaya United will reach the pinnacle of Thai football
in the not too distant future.
At a press conference with his brother, Mayor Itthiphol
Kunplome, Sonthaya thanked the new sponsors and said their support has
boosted the team’s spirit, along with its fortunes.

Fashion and spectacle makes Pink Polo a big hit with fans
Thai
Polo and St. Regis battle for possession of the ball at the Queen’s
Cup Pink Polo event held at Thai Polo Club in Pattaya, Saturday, February
19.
Elfi Seitz
Hundreds of enthusiastic spectators arrived at the Thai
Polo Club in Pattaya on February 19 to attend the Queens Cup Final polo
match between two all women teams representing Thai Polo and St. Regis. Most
of the female fans were decked out in hats of all types of styles and it
showed again that polo is not just a dynamic equestrian sport but also a
real social event.
The
‘best hat’ award went to Lee Puenboonpra
The traditional Pink Polo spectacle is used to collect
money for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s centre for breast cancer treatment,
which provides female patients in need with the - very often – life saving
surgery and treatment they desperately require.
Included in the attendees at the polo match were Dr. Kris
Chatamra, president of the breast cancer centre and his wife Khunying
Finola.
Other VIP guests at the event included the owner of the
Thai Polo Club and CEO of B. Grimm, Harald Link, his daughter Caroline,
Nunthinee Tanner, the executive director of LBG Ltd. Group and chairwoman of
the Pink Polo organising committee, Paul James, the global brand leader for
the St. Regis Hotels & Resort Group, which were the main sponsors, plus
representatives of various foreign embassies and important businessmen.
Miss
Pink Polo Queen 2011.
The special guest of honor was ML Khunying Piyapas
Bhirombhakdi, who - on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen – presented the
beautiful trophy to the winning team.
Prior to the exciting polo match a lunch buffet was
served, followed by a terrific fashion show on horses where models and
famous actors and society ladies wore designs by La Martina, Burberry and
Cymberline.
Of course raffle tickets were available with great prizes
to be won. The “Miss Pink Polo Queen” contest winner was rewarded with a
voucher of 50,000 baht from The St. Regis Lhasa Samui. The best hat contest
was won by Lee Puengbonpra, the head of the HI! magazine who received a
35,000 baht voucher.
Finally the polo game started with St. Regis in their
fitting pink polo shirts and Thai Polo wearing their customary grey jerseys.
For a long time the game ebbed and flowed and it seemed that St. Regis were
gradually gaining the upper hand, but the traditional “stamping” of the
field by the spectators before the 4th and last Chukka
saw a transformation in the game and the Thai Polo Team of Caroline Link,
Catalina Oettinger-Wallenstein, Claudia Zeisberger and Isabel von
Morgenstern, rallied to score the match-winning goal in the last 20 seconds
of the game to win the match 4-3.

PCC find total too much to chase on minefield of a wicket
Pattaya Cricket Club could not overhaul the target of 211 runs in their
latest Premier League match against Aditya Birla-ICC away in Bangkok last
weekend.
The team resembled a travelling circus rather than an
aspiring cricket team attempting to finish in the coveted top four of the
league and they did not disappoint as only nine players were available to
take the field due to our friends in brown uniform detaining the opening
bowler and square leg fielder for speeding.
PCC had been asked to bowl first in sweltering conditions
and on a turf wicket that would not have looked out of place in an
allotment. This is very frustrating when there is a perfect artificial
wicket next to this minefield.
AB-ICC took an instant liking to the makeshift bowling
attack as Andy ‘Boots’ Emery was obviously struggling with blisters to his
feet, a result of practicing for hours in the nets!
Having paid their speeding fine, Shan eventually entered
the attack, the team could afford a slip and immediately the run rate
slowed. Together with Usman and the maturing Dutch spinner Leon, PCC reduced
the opposition to106 for 5. Leon bowled beautifully and finished with
figures of 8 overs, 4 wickets and 13 runs. However, tired fielding and
dropped catches contributed to a powerful finish to the innings from Vincent
as he completed a masterful century (107) and was ably assisted by Vidit (58
not out) to help AB-ICC post a total of 211 runs from the allotted 40 overs.
PCC needed a solid start but with only 19 runs on the
board they had lost 3 wickets. The wicket had deteriorated rapidly as Leon
had already been hit on the head from off a length, Adam Oyston had been hit
on the foot from a bouncer and Sunny had been rapped numerous times on the
gloves.
It was left to Simon and Hansie to rescue the innings.
Hansie grew in confidence and some marvelous clean hitting started a
counter-attack that soon rattled the opposition. After 2 sixes and 6 fours
Hansie finally succumbed, more to exhaustion than a good delivery, for 57
and PCC were 104 for 4.
Once Simon was clean bowled trying to maintain the
required run rate for 30 the innings lost its momentum. Richard Harvey and
Shan had brief cameo appearances but PCC closed their innings on 171 for 8.
PCC’s next league fixture is away again against the
Southerners at the Thai Cricket Ground on Saturday 12th
March.

‘Fun Regatta’ goes from strength to strength
Multihull “Miss Saigon” cruises past some limestone outcrops during Race Day
1 of The Bay Regatta. (Photo/www.acyc-phuket.com).
Held from February 9 - 13, 2011, the 14th The Bay Regatta
once again met with the distinction as being labeled the ‘Fun Regatta’.
An astounding sailing route and anchorages leaving from
Phuket through majestic Phang Nga Bay to Krabi and back to Phuket with five
nights of prize giving presentations and parties have made this event one of
the most memorable ones on the Asian yachting circuit.
Varying wind conditions and impressive course designs
through the stunning scenery of Phang Nga Bay and the provinces of Phuket,
Phang Nga and Krabi in addition to fantastic parties allowed this year’s Bay
Regatta to be hailed as the best ever yet.
There’s
always a large emphasis on having fun at this annual nautical event.
(Photo/www.acyc-phuket.com).
Scott Duncanson and his crew on Quantum Fusion M
were certainly lavish in their praise for the event organizers.
“The race management under the direction of Simon James
and Andy Dowden was simply superb in some very challenging weather
conditions,” said Scott. “The courses were the best thought out in many
years and most competitive yachties would agree Simon is providing the most
professional race management in the South East Asian region.”
Yacht racing is often a selfish sport but The Bay Regatta
offers the opportunity to involve the whole family both on and off the
water. Competitive sailors, cruisers, boozers there’s something for
everyone.
The London Corinthian Sailing Club chartered four boats -
Venture, Kinnon, Villon and Rachawadee - and have sailed in
many other regattas but this was their first experience in sailing in The
Bay Regatta and they found it to be much more fun. Says Steven Gear-Evans,
Venture, second in Bareboat Charter, from this club, “This was the
most stunning race course we’ve ever been on. We’ll definitely be back!””
The Regatta saw Day 1 of racing in Phang Nga Bay off the
east of Phuket with the opening party and the prize giving and second party
held at The Village Coconut Island at Koh Maphrao with that day providing
Phuket-based sailors the opportunity to participate. The course then
followed a route to the anchorage at The Paradise Koh Yao Boutique Resort
and Spa.
Particularly scenic surroundings took the fleet to the
anchorage in Krabi at the Sheraton Krabi and then off to a more invigorating
sail to the southeast point of Phuket Island where the final party was held
by the Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC), the organizers of the Regatta.
Although low winds plagued the first two days resulting
in shortened courses for several classes, the last two days provided some
terrific sailing with a particularly invigorating sail back to Phuket.
In Racing class, Phuket local Scott Duncanson, owner and
skipper of Quantum Fusion M took first place while in Bareboat
Charter, it was Paul Kendall on Lychee who took top spot on the
podium.
Neils Degenkolw’s Phoenix won first in Cruising A
and in Cruising B, Jim Ellis’s Remington, a participant and winner
since the first rally in 1998, took first.
Multihulls saw first time Regatta participant
Sidewinder owned by Alan Carwadine taking honours.
Despite rumours that the event wouldn’t happen, the Ao
Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC) stepped in on short notice and organized a
successful event that moved approximately 300 people around Phang Nga Bay,
from one 5-star hotel to another. Fantastic food, great entertainment (DJ
Jay Le Shark at The Coconut Village Island and a band), and bands at The
Paradise Koh Yao Boutique Resort and Spa and at the Sheraton Krabi Resort
and for the first time, free flow drinks (booze) (no tickets had to be
purchased). The final party at ACYC also saw outstanding food and drinks
with two bands.
The Bay Regatta is a non-profit event. Thanks to the
support of sponsorship, the Regatta can continue to provide varied and
interesting race courses through some of the most breathtaking maritime
scenery in the world to reach unparalleled anchorages and party venues - all
factors which contribute to this exciting event which keeps participants
returning each year.

Nga, Krabi, see www.acyc -phuket.com/bayregatta.htm.

City hammer league leaders
MBMG International League Div 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Pattaya City met the unbeaten league leaders Londoner
last weekend, going into the match trailing their opponents by four points
with six games left to play. Pattaya knew they could not afford to drop any
points in this game as only a win would keep them in touch with the top
teams.
Although both sides settled down quickly, it was the
Londoner who took the lead in the sixth minute of the game when the City
defence failed to clear the ball and the Londoner’s forward made no mistake
from twenty yards to give his team the lead.
City quickly replied and the Londoner’s keeper had to
make a smart save from Ndjanna, but equally the City keeper had to be alert
and dive at the feet of the Londoner forward’s feet to stop them scoring a
second.
As it was the Bangkok team went further ahead when one of
their forwards went down in the City area to gain a penalty which was
converted, even though the City keeper got his hand to it, to make it 2-0.
This was certainly far from the kind of start City had
wanted, but they carried on with their passing game, using the width of the
pitch and making the Londoner players run around in the hot sun on the large
playing area. But City still lacked the final killer ball so chances were
few and far between even though possession wise they had the better of the
first half.
After the break City came out all guns blazing and
straight from the kick off they worked the ball out to the wing before
centering to the unmarked Ndjanna, who was unceremoniously sent crashing to
the ground by the Londoner’s keeper. A penalty was the result and Craig
Banks made no mistake from the spot to pull a goal back to make it 2-1.
City continued their open football and ripped the
Londoners defence apart time and again and their keeper made two important
saves to keep the Londoner in the lead. It seemed only a matter of time
though before City would score an equalizer as the Londoner defence began to
panic under the constant pressure of the attacks by the Pattaya forwards.
City continued to miss easy chances but when Alan Mulberry hit the post,
Ndjanna was the quickest to react and prodded the ball home for the
equalizing goal to make it 2-2.
Now back on level terms the Pattaya team pressured the
ragged Londoners defence even more and from a corner kick Phillip Walter
headed down for Ndjanna to hook the ball home to put City in front for the
first time in the match. Victory was all but assured soon after when a long
kick by City’s keeper was controlled by Ndjanna before he slotted a pass
into the path of the unmarked Alan Mulberry who made it 4-2.
Pattaya were not about to sit back, even with a two goal
lead, and they signed off with the best goal of the game when Knorr put the
finishing touch to an eight man move to notch City’s fifth goal and make the
final score 5-2.
The second half was City’s finest display of the season
and they are now only one point behind the Londoner who have the harder
run-in of the two clubs until the end of the season.
City Res were unable to follow the lead of the senior
team as they fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat by ipod in an entertaining
end to end game.
Pattaya City are at home against the German All Stars
this weekend while the City Res have no game.

FC Nova heading for top flight after weekend win
MBMG Bangkok International League Division 2
FC Nova.
FC Nova travelled up to Bangkok last Saturday to take on the inform Bangkok
Storm and came away with a well deserved victory. The 3 points gained
effectively means FC Nova, in only their second season, have gained
promotion to the top tier of amateur football in Bangkok, a fantastic
achievement by all involved with the football club.
Coach Stuart Levy however will not let his side rest on
their laurels and with only 2 games remaining in the season will concentrate
on winning both those fixtures and go up as worthy champions.
Levy once again had to tinker with the players he had
available last weekend to provide the best formation. He reverted back to
the tried and tested 4 4 2, with inspirational captain Lee Homer coming back
to partner Mark Mckeown in the middle of the park and Paul Derbyshire
reinstated back to his favoured centre forward position to partner the
inform Bjorn Ellingsen.
The formation seemed to give more stability to Nova’s
play and they certainly had the better of the opening exchanges against the
Storm. However, similar to the previous week they could not turn their early
pressure into goals although both strikers Ellingsen and Derbyshire had good
opportunities to open their account.
The pressure was telling and Nova finally broke the
deadlock on 25 minutes; Sit Namthong, making a rare appearance for the
Pattaya outfit due to his naval commitments, burst down the left wing before
providing the perfect cross for leading scorer Ellingsen to calmly slot
home.
Nova now firmly had a grip on the game, Mckeown and Homer
were bossing the centre of midfield and new signing Deow on the right of
midfield was seeing plenty of the ball. The young Thai midfielder looks a
great signing and with a little more composure at times could have got a
couple of goals himself as he jinked his way past the Storm players time and
again.
With 10 minutes remaining in the half Nova suffered a
blow when one of their senior players Derbyshire suffered a nasty clash of
heads with a young Storm centre half. The Nova player came off worse and had
to be carried from the field dazed and suffering concussion as well needing
14 stitches in a head wound!
Coach Levy had an adequate replacement in the experienced
Nicholas Creasey who was soon in the action linking up play well. With
minutes remaining in the half a well worked move saw the ball arrive to the
feet of Creasey, who cleverly laid the ball back into the path of his
captain Homer who unleashed a screamer from 25 yards that crashed into the
roof of the net.
Soon after the half time whistle blew and Coach Levy got
his players together and demanded more of the same stuff. Telling his
players not to take their foot of the gas as Bangkok Storm had hit a bit of
form of late with some strong second half displays themselves.
Levy introduced another new signing Alex Milburn for the
start of the second half and the player, who has trained with Nova all
season but has been unable to find his way into the squad until now,
relished the opportunity and was a constant menace to the Storm back four as
he chased down everything.
Nova were looking comfortable with their two goal lead
but midway into the half Levy was forced into making a couple of changes
with the impressive Lee Turner and young Deow having to be replaced through
injuries. This somewhat upset the balance and cohesion of the team, however
captain Homer had reverted back to centre half to shore up the defence
alongside young Ton, who gave another assured display.
Storm were now pressing in search of a goal that would
get them back in the game, however they could not find a way passed Homer
and his well drilled defence and Jesper Karlsson was giving a more than
competent display in the Nova goal.
After weathering the “Storm” Nova had chances to extend
their lead in the final ten minutes as their opponents committed more
players forward. But they failed to capitalise on these opportunities and in
the end the final whistle blew and Nova had ran out comfortable 2 goal
victors.
After the game the celebrations could begin as Levy and
his players were in jubilant mood after gaining promotion to the higher
echelons after only their second season as a club.
Levy and his Nova side will certainly want to end the
season in style and a win over BSL Youth in Bangkok this coming weekend will
see them crowned champions. They then finish off their league campaign the
following week with a home fixture against Picked Liver.
Coach Stuart Levy will certainly know it will be a hard
ask in Division 1 next season as there is a big gap in standard between the
two divisions, with the top division extremely demanding in terms of speed
and fitness. A number of clubs are recruiting African players to cope with
the demands of the physicality of the league, however Nova are a club built
on strong principles, effectively started up by a group of lads that fancied
a game of football, and they have done remarkably well this season.
Levy knows he will need to improve his squad for next
season but will continue to keep to the clubs traditions, that is first and
foremost looking for players from the local ex-pat community.
After the trip back from Bangkok the lads from Nova were
treated to splendid array of food laid on by Jamesons Irish Bar before
celebrating long and hard into the night.
Also on a nice note congratulations to Nova’s influential
captain Lee Homer, who became a father for the first time on Monday and all
the players and management wish Lee, Sar and their new arrival all the very
best for the future!

Another tight contest
for monthly master
The IPGC Monthly Members’ Tournament
Wednesday, March 2,
Phoenix – Stoke/Stableford
The first Wednesday in March saw the largest field of
IPGC members for a few months assemble at Phoenix for the third IPGC
members’ tournament of the year. The Ocean and Mountain combination was
quite well presented and with the top flight playing from the blue tees
and white for the rest, there was a fine contest in prospect.
Each monthly member’s tournament provides three
winners in the divisions and one from the ladies, who will go forward to
the finals to compete for the Gold and Silver Medals later in the
season. In addition the tournaments will also be used to determine the
IPGC gentleman player of the year, with between 1 and 15 points to be
won in each division every month, dependant on final positions, which
will then be aggregated for the year to establish the overall winner. As
usual the first division contested a stroke play format whilst the
second, third and Ladies’ division played stableford.
In the first division the competition was very close
with only two shots (gross) separating the top five golfers. It was left
to handicaps to decide the outcome and in third place, playing off nine,
was Brian Libbey with net 75. In second place was organiser Russell
Exley with net 74 and the flight was won by Jim Slattery with a
competent net 73.
The second division played stableford and the
pressure was rather less acute as Patrick Engles finished third with 34
points, a handful behind runner-up Phil Groves with 39. The winner was
Shuichi Kodaka who produced his best round for a while to take the
flight with 43 handsome points.
The third division was won by Danny Greer with 35
points, Roar Berger finished second with 33 points and a count-back
separated Rod Howett and Ted Murphy both on 30 points, with Ted losing
out for third place after only managing 15 points on the back nine.
The ladies’ winner was Tik Mayer on 32 points, edging
out Noi Emerson on 31.
In the ‘2’s competitions there were only six birdies,
with Brian Beaupre and Jim Slattery winning in the top flight and
Shuichi Kodaka, Alan Griffiths, Patrick Engels and Emmet White being
successful in the second flight. There were no ‘2’s in the third flight.
The near-pin winners are listed below.
After the tournament there was the usual excellent
presentation buffet at The Haven. The function and prizes were sponsored
generously as always by the IPGC, and those who had contributed to the
success of the day were warmly thanked. They included the perpetual
Registrar Glyn Evans, Starter John Mason, results coordinator Stephen
Beard and the hard working event organiser Russell Exley for whom the
day had been another resounding success.
The official prize-winners are listed below but the
full list of results can be seen on the excellent official IPGC website
at http://www.ipgc.org.

Thorne squeezes out 40-
pointer at damp Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Feb. 28, Green
Valley – Stableford.
There was heavy rain overnight here in Jomtien and a few
showers early morning and we were all not sure what to expect today. We have
been so lucky lately with the weather on golfing days with this intermittent
rain, unheard of normally for this time of the year.
There were only two divisions for the men today with the
cut at 5-15 and 16+ and of course the ladies as well.
Green
Valley winners - Valentina Hiller and Raivo Velsberg.
Playing off 9 the best score of the day in all three
divisions was 39 points, well done Raivo Velsberg who won the top flight. In
second place was Tony Thorne on 37 points and Georges Faber beat Yasuo
Suzuki 22/19 on the back nine for third after they both came in with 36’s.
Kari Aarnio won division 2 with 36 points, that Frenchman
Jean Morel was second three points behind and Jerry McCarthy edged Harry
Vincenzi 10/9 on a back six count-back for third place after they both
scored 32 points each.
Valentina Hiller meanwhile took the ladies division with
just 28 points.
Timo Ahvenainen birdied the ninth and Adi Mayer the
twelfth to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and in division 2, Kari Aarnio,
Fred Duffy, Ernst Egeskog and Jean Morel shared the rollover purse.
Near pins went to Pranee Bossett, Mikael Andersson,
Georges Faber, Raivo Velsberg, Harry Vincenzi, Jim Connelly and Jean Morel.
Friday, March 4, Eastern
Star - Stableford
There were 57 names down on the sheet on Thursday evening
at Siam Cats with seven ladies playing but as the evening progressed a few
cancellations came in and four no shows the next morning left us down to 4
ladies and 44 men in four divisions. The reason was torrential rain in the
Ban Chang area starting at around 7.00 a.m. and lasting for over an hour.
As we drove towards Eastern Star the clouds were very
heavy in the distance and there was a very light drizzle. The first of the
13 groups teed off and the light rain lasted until the fifth hole, then the
skies brightened slowly and conditions improved throughout the round. This
was reflected in the scores today with the best in division 1 for Tony
Thorne winning with 40 points, playing off six, while Adi Mayer was second
with 33 and Steve Jones beat Paul Butler and Kari Kuparinen 20/18/17 on
count-back after they all scored 31 points.
There was an amazing cut in division 2 of 15-17 with 14
players and Arvo Hiller won it with 37 points. Dennis Scougall took second
place on 35 points and Grant Cadell came in third with 34.
Joe Peters won division 3 with an even par 36 points,
William Chang was one point behind for second and in third place was Tony
Holehouse on 34.
Noi Emmerson topped the ladies division with 38 points.
Two birdies on the third hole helped Wilf Latham and Tony
Thorne share the rollover ‘2’s pot in division 1 and there were no
successful candidates today in the second division so four rollovers moving
on to next week’s extravaganza game here.
Near pins were claimed by Mam Morel (2), Paul Butler,
Risto Hakkenen, Tony Thorne (2), Lee Casey and Joe Peters.

PSC golf from The Caddy Shack
Wednesday, March 2,
Greenwood - Stableford
A pre-game rainstorm meant a reduced field of 20 players
arrived to take on the challenge of Greenwood off the white tees. As it

Damian
Trant - A Flight winner at Greenwood.
Damian Trant coped best with the conditions to win the A

enough to give Greg Ritchie victory in the B Flight with Derek May and Bruce

South Herts take the Challenge Jug
IPGC golf from The Haven
The
South Herts golf team.
Sunday, Feb. 27, Green
Valley - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-15)
1st Frank McGowan (15) 38pts
2nd Joe McArdle (11) 36pts
3rd Jim Slattery (11) 35pts
Division 1 (16+)
1st Stephen Lewis (18) 38pts
2nd Wayne Harmon (17) 38pts
3rd Tony Pieroni (16) 35pts
Once again the Sunday group got back on to the usual
course with seven groups forming into two divisions and with no delays in
starting times it meant the usual suspects were to be found at the top of
the leader boards.
Frank McGowan took charge of the first division with a
two-under return that was enough by two to take the top spot, with sparring
partner Joe McArdle in second just one ahead of Jim Slattery.
The second division needed a count-back between Stephen
Lewis and Wayne Harmon, which the former won by a margin of 22 to 20 with
Toni Pieroni relegated to third three back from them.
The 2’s were shared by Joe McArdle, Jim Slattery, Wayne
Harmon and Otto Haeling.
Monday, Feb. 28, Mountain
Shadow - 2 Person Scramble
Division 1 (0–12)
1st Peter Skinner & Bob Heath (9) 47pts
2nd Marc Jenson & John Chelo (11) 45pts
3rd Jim Slattery & Gerald Decio (10) 45pts
4th Michael Cutmore & Stephen Beard (9) 45pts
Division 2 (13+)
1st Max Gard & Leif Lossius (18) 47pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka & Danny Greer (17) 46pts
3rd Edward Butcher & Garry Carstairs (14) 45pts
4th
Rod Howett & Roar Berger (20) 43pts
As usual the monthly scramble was well attended with over
twenty teams contesting this very popular format at one of the most popular
venues for a scramble, played from the blue tees.
Victor
Horn secured victory for South Herts.
Two divisions were required with the split being made at
13 and above with teams handicaps being calculated on their two handicaps
added together and then being allowed 40% of the combined total and rounded
to the nearest whole number. This allowed for all levels of handicap to
compete although each player had to play at least seven tee shots during the
round.
The first division was led in by Peter Skinner and Bob
Heath, with Peter leading the way in the chipping and putting department and
Bob looking exceptionally good in the tee to green areas. The four hours a
day spent practicing, without a single lesson or pro in sight, on every
non-golf day proved to be the difference as they swept to the top at eleven
under, ahead of a very competitive chasing group who all had to be separated
by count-back.
Marc Jenson and John Chelo made good use of their
slightly higher handicaps to take second spot with a better 8 to 7 over the
last 3 three holes to deny Jim Slattery and Gerald Decio, who had tied them
for the back nine at 23 and the back six at 14. Michael Cutmore and Stephen
Beard took fourth with the same points but a worse 22 on the inward nine.
The second division was also a very close fought affair
with Max Gard and Leif Lossius, a last send team match up, taking the top
spot also at eleven under and Shuichi Kodaka and Danny Greer combined some
excellent team work, after having spent many hours in bonding sessions in
most of the establishments of Walking Street, to place second a shot back.
Edward Butcher and Garry Carstairs made light of their
first outing out of Soi 13 with a third place one more behind, leaving Rod
Howett and Roar Berger in fourth two more behind them.
The 2’s were suspended for the day due to the format.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Garry Carstairs, Edward Butcher and John Chelo and also welcomed back Phil
Mitchell, Stuart Hibberd, Stephen Lewis, Robin Peach and Brian Randall.
Friday, March 4, The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Brian Libbey (9) 37pts
2nd Russell Exley (8) 37pts
3rd Jim Slattery (11) 34pts
4th Max Gard (15) 34pts
5th Gerald Decio (14) 34pts
6th
Roar Berger (27) 32pts
As the rain lashed down in Soi 13, watched by the players
who had braved the conditions having left their homes in a thunderstorm, it
was clear that the numbers for the day’s activities would be severely
restricted and the next decision was whether to even start out for the
course. But following a phone call to ascertain that the course was indeed
still open and that carts would be allowed in the rough only, a much smaller
number than usual set off in the rain.
As the journey to the course progressed the rain got
steadily lighter until finally everyone arrived at the Emerald to overcast
but dry conditions that continued throughout the day’s rounds.
Following the overnight and morning downpours it was
decided that the day’s competition should be played under a ‘lift and place’
on the fairways ruling.
With much fewer contestants just one division was
required and this was led by Brian Libbey whose one under was enough on the
day to secure another win to add to his recent list of successes, but he
needed to win the count-back over Russell Exley, who is also going through a
small purple patch, which he did with a better 20 to 16 as Russell took a
nap over the last six holes having won his match that he was playing
simultaneously by then as Brian still battled to win his match right up to
the 17th hole.
Jim Slattery, also involved in the two formats, took
third place after a count-back which he won with 13 on the back six after he
had tied the back nine with Max Gard and Gerald Decio on 17 points. Max then
took fourth place with a better 12 on the back six as Gerald could muster
just 11 points.
Roar Berger slipped into sixth place two more behind
those three.
Challenge Jug Match -
South Herts 4.5 v The Haven 3.5
(Haven players first):
Russell Exley (8) won 7 & 6 Michael Cutmore (0)
Brian Libbey (9) won 3 & 1 Peter Skinner (10)
Yasuo Suzuki (10) lost 3 & 1 Jim Slattery (11)
Rick Roberts (13) lost 5 & 4 Bob Heath (13)
Max Gard (15) drew A/S Gerald Decio (14)
Steve Lewis (18) lost 5 & 4 George Oakley (15)
Stephen Beard (22) lost 1 down Bruce Horn (15)
Roar Berger (27 won 2 up Jimmy Norris (26)
While the normal Stableford competition was being played,
the South Herts Golf Club Tour Team were making their fourth attempt to grab
the “Thailand Challenge Jug” from the wizened claw like grip of The Doc and
at last succeeded in their quest for what had seemed to be an impossible
task. But with a weakened Haven team having many of the stalwarts still
cowering under the sheets with the thunder crashing, it looked like it was
going to be their best chance for years to claim the prize.
The first two matches did not bear out that promise as
Russell Exley swept to an imperious 7 and 6 win over the over Singha’ed
Michael Cutmore, although Michael played some fantastic tees shots that were
both very long and very straight, the wobbly bits around the green made the
difference.
In the same four-ball Brian Libbey finally settled the
match on the 17th winning 3 and 1 against the inform
Peter Skinner with some very steady play from Brian which Peter could not
quite match on the day. So 2- 0 to The Haven.
Next up was the promising Yasuo Suzuki but his usual
spark was not quite firing up as he went down on the 17th
3 and 1 to Jim Slattery whose application made all the difference in the end
analysis. In the same group Bob Heath again took full advantage of several
hundred practice strikes out of the middle of the practice bay allied to an
unerring radar sense on the greens to see off the challenge of Rick Roberts
after fourteen holes.
That left the score finely poised at 2 – 2
Next up was Max Gard, having been shoehorned into the
team at the last minute, who managed to hold Gerald Decio to all square
after the match had swung from one side to the other throughout the round,
while in the same group George Oakley, the old plumber, wrenched out a 5 and
4 win after fourteen hard fought holes leaving Stephen Lewis slightly shaken
to put South Herts up three and a half to two and a half.
The final two groups were advised of the match situation
as they approached the eighteenth green and Roar Berger, having just won the
seventeenth to go one up, continued the pressure to claim the last to leave
Jimmy Norris two down. So it was all down to the Doc, who having come back
from seven down, yes seven down to all square on the seventeenth to either
win, draw or lose the match on the last. He unfortunately took the last and
least attractive option by taking four from the edge as Victor Horn, his old
drinking buddy and erstwhile provider of London lodgings, took the win with
a stupendous bogey to claim their match and the Challenge Jug for South
Herts by a margin of 4.5 to 3.5.
In a strange but possibly not unconnected coincidence,
The Doc won the correct score draw pool and then attempted to make apologies
and amends by trying to buy drinks for the rest of the evening.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi
13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation
to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day,
but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays
on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be
found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Schramm ends the month on a high
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Bangpakong Riverside on
Monday, 28th February and found the welcome warm as usual and the course in
excellent shape with greens consistent but a little “crusty”. The course is
now played “backwards” beginning on what was previously the tenth hole and
is considerably more difficult as a result. However the quality of the
golfer decides the scoring rate and again on this occasion the better
golfers were to the fore.
In the single flight Japanese golfers Joe Niisato and
Takeshi Hakozaki shared third place with 36 points each whilst Dave Moriarty
went one better to record the second best score of 37 points. Once again it
was left to Rick Schramm to stamp his influence on the field and he ended
such a fine month for him with a two-under 38 points for the win. It was the
third sub-par round of the month for the confident and clinical Canadian and
propelled him to the summit of the Society’s “Player of the Month” stakes
after a string of excellent performances. His gross of 78 was as good as any
he has turned in recently.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Larry Slattery, Takeshi
Hakozaki and a newly returned Steve Jones. The day was superbly marshalled
by John Mason and the presentation ended with a birthday celebration back at
Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao for Khun Peung, the good lady of the house.
It had been another fine golfing day from the Elephant
Bar.
Maple leaves predominate
at Greenwood once more
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Greenwood on
Friday, 4th March, a very stormy day indeed, but found the A and C courses
dry and conditions perfect with overcast skies making golfers comfortably
cool. The field was divided into two flights at sixteen and under and not
for the first time at Greenwood the Canadian entrants were to feature
strongly in the frame.
In the second flight Dave Wilkinson incredibly finished
third on 30 points whilst John Lindsay, playing for the first time with the
group, finished second with 32 points. The organiser for the day Jack
Robertson had soldiered his round well for the winning score of 35 points.
In the top flight Jean Morel joined Rick Schramm in third
with 33 points, whilst Ronnie Ramsay made an impressive return from work to
post 36 points for second. The winner, with the best gross of the day, 75,
was Brian Beaupre and his 38 points continued an excellent spell for the
Canadian currently.
There were no ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to out-of-form
Jimmy Cloy for his low score of the day.
Full marks to Jack for his stewarding in the absence of
Mr. Len as he waits for some minor surgery.

Khao Kheow avoids the rain as Outback take the honours
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
Tuesday’s Div A and B winners, David Day and Dennis Persson, relax after
their respective victories.
Monday, Feb. 28, Burapha -
Stableford
Forty-seven players at our regular Monday spot at Burapha
as the Outbackers we were joined by the TIAC boys from Aussie, here for
their annual challenge. The day was hot and rain threatened but didn’t
eventuate; the course was in great condition and playing the whites on C and
D the scores were generally on the better than average side.
Peter Sapwell (TIAC) won Div A with 37 points ahead of
Owen Walkley (36pts) who always seems to play well here; with Div B going to
Tony Pieroni, who had the day’s top score of 41 points (to follow his recent
success at Khao Kheow, but that day he won with only 31).
Laurie Rive (TIAC) on 38 points prevented a clean sweep
from the rest of Tony’s gang; Wayne taking third place, also with 38, and
Pat in fourth with 35. Another TIAC boy, Barney Clarkson (35pts) won Div C
after beating Burapha regular Ivan Plunkett on count-back and the fourth and
last member of Tony’s gang, Doc Vale, took third with 33.
There were just two ‘2’s from Wayne Harman and Bob Green.
We said goodbye to Wayne, Pat, Tony and Doc, all of whom
had a successful day, as they’re on their way back to work and other things
back in Perth. The lucky draws (free green fee vouchers) were won by a
couple of the TIAC lads so they went to auction back at the bar.
The after-golf “barbie” continues to be popular, with
burgers and sausages, and the pork or steak sandwiches are slowly catching
on.
Some very good friends of the Outback are looking for
sponsors for their upcoming Tuk Tuk journey through India from Cochin (in
Southern India) to Shillong (in the North East corner). It’s a trek of some
2,500 miles starting on April 16th 2011 which the
teams are hoping to complete in about two weeks. The team’s name is “What
Tuk Tuk Shillong” and you can read all about it at
http://rickshawrun11s.thead venturists.com/index.php? mode=teams.
Thanks to the winners today who contributed their
winnings to the above and to the guys who also donated yesterday at the bar.
We are looking to get the boys past their 1000 GBP target and will be
collecting for the next few weeks. The Outback will then credit their
sponsored account from time to time. The charities are Cancer Research and
Scad (http://www.scad .org.in /who_we_are.php).
Finally, whilst at Burapha today, it was announced that
there will be a Pro-Am, to be played on Wednesday 30th March 2011, so anyone
interested in playing, please give Capt’ Bob a call.

Tuesday, March 1, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Pattaya Country Club continues its rise to stardom as
another good field of 29 Outbackers took to the fairways. Chad was, as
usual, our organiser, although he failed to produce the result he would have
liked, continuing in his current run of poor form. One wonders if playing
with John Lawton has any bearing?
Alan Whittingham is playing well but didn’t do quite
enough to catch the resurgent David Day, whose fine 39 points was the day’s
top score as well as giving him first place in Div A.
Div B went to Dennis Persson with his 37 points and he
was disappointed to learn that there was no ladder this month. John Lawton
tied with him on points but was beaten on count-back with JinJo O’Neill back
in third with 36.
There were seven ‘2’s from Ian Heddle, Nigel Cannon,
David Day, Jean Morel, Al McMullan and Dennis ‘the Turnip’ had two.
Div A (0-17)
1st David Day (16) 39pts
2nd Alan Whittingham (15) 38pts
3rd Bruce Milner (13) 36pts
4th Jean Morel (17) 34pts

Wednesday, March 2, The Emerald - Stableford
It’s always good to report that a course has done a good
job, and the Emerald excelled themselves today as we teed-off on time with
no interruptions and no shortage of carts. Some 43 Outbackers, not all
playing in the comp. started out and many of them were the TIAC boys who are
with us all this week, practising for their own tournament which starts on
Monday at Siam Old Course.
One of them, Ian (Fidge) Button gained the top score of
the day (41pts) which not only earned him first place in Div C but it also
saw his handicap reduced by one shot to 15, ahead of him joining us in
Chiang Mai on the 13th March, well done Ian!
Tony McDonough is a shrewd golfer; he’s always there or
thereabouts but just stays under the handicap radar, which he did again
today with 38 points for the Div B win, whilst Ole Aaarrestad took full
advantage of a two shot hike in his handicap to pip Paul Greenaway by one in
Div A.
Brian Maddox’s 34 points were enough to win a low scoring
Div D by three, and fourth place went to Dennis Toal with just 28.
There were no ‘2’s today.
Div A (0-10)
1st Ole Aarrestad (8) 37pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (10) 36pts
3rd Kevin From (6) 35pts

3rd Steve Bowyer (29) 29pts
4th

Friday, March 4, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
There would have been a few golfers upon waking who would
have turned over and not ventured out, with heavy or steady rain falling and
thunderstorms rumbling around most of Pattaya and its suburbs. How wrong
they would have been, depending on the course of the day. We heard that the
army recruit course in Sattahip was flooded and unplayable, Siam Old Course
and Pattaya C.C. had a small amount of rain early and Khao Kheow, believe it
or not, had none.
Sixteen of the Outback’s finest took on 16 of the TIAC
boys in a two-person Ambrose (scramble) on the A & C nines, and in addition
of course there were also the usual team prizes.
Steve Mann and Dave Thomson (Outback) got there first by
count-back with the day’s best gross of 72 for a net 66.25, which was
matched by Al Bryce and Gavin Henderson (TIAC).
Two more TIAC teams filled third and fourth places but
proved to be not quite enough as the local Outback team just got there with
a 5 to 3 overall match result.
There were two ‘2’s from Barry McIntosh and John Burns.
1st Steve Mann (9) & David Thomson (14) net 66.25
2nd Al Bryce (11) & Gavin Henderson (16) net 66.25
3rd Kevin From (6) & Dennis Toal (32) net 66.5
4th
Graham Holmes (7) & Dino Bin lusimoen (27) net 66.5

from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or
give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Hall keeps the winning habit
PSC golf from The Three Sisters’ Bar
Winner
Richard Hall, left, with runner-up Eddie Kristianson.
It was Richard Hall’s day again as he stomped the field
into submission with a brilliant 42 points at Pattaya Country Club. He was
hitting the ball well and had an exceptional day at putting. Richard’s form
runs hot and cold and this was one of his hot days.
In second place was old timer “Fast” Eddie Kristianson
with 35 points. Eddie stayed in Pattaya instead of his normal trip to Canada
and for his first game in Pattaya for a while he did not do too badly.
The rest of the field seemed to be asleep or maybe
recovering from a hangover. The lower thirties and below were the norm for
the day.
Hope to see you all next week with a little stronger field.
Brown has a blast at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s ‘four tops’: Brian Parrish, Doug Maiko, Karen Brown and Tom
Cotton.

Tuesday, March 1, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
Well at least it did not rain so I suppose we got a
result. Mind the caddy did ask if I had a ‘rain cover’ just in case, but lo
and behold we got around dry. The skies were overcast, and it was really hot
and muggy, but all in all the day was fine and a great success.
The drive up there was nice and slow as befits the driver
when the fuel prices rise. I have no doubt that in a few weeks the rise will
be forgotten and we will be back to normal!
So onto the course and the test for the day was to be the
C & A nines. This is to my mind by far the hardest 18 holes, so with rain
possible and the course wet from an overnight deluge we elected to play from
the ‘Mickey Mouse’ tees (that is the white here) and just hope nobody
actually destroyed the cou rse. This is Khao Kheow though so I felt I was on
safe ground.
The round went well, the course was a bit wet so we did
not get massive run, the rough was hard to get out of and the greens were
very slow, so the ball did not get to the hole. All in all a fine round.
So it was soon into the shower, a quick bite in the fine
restaurant and into the car for a smooth drive back down Route 7, what could
go wrong?
As is normal I usually drive out of the old exit, the one
straight onto Route 7. It is getting a bit unused now but I have come out of
there a dozen times. The road is not very clean now, and as I got onto Route
7 a noise was heard from the back, a check spotted nothing but down the road
the rear tyre went flat. It is quite exciting changing a tyre on Route 7. I
found a nail was the culprit so from now on it is down the clean exit road!
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and in
the A Flight (0-16) the winner was Brian Parrish with 37 points, ahead of a
count-back on 36 points that saw Doug Maiko in second and Richard Kubicki in
third.
In the B Flight the winner was Karen Brown with the best
score of the day 39 points. In second was Tom Cotton with 35 points and in
third was Henry Wong with 32 points.
Then it was time for a few ‘cold uns’. T.T.F.N.

Habgood holds on for monthly title
PSC golf from The Bunker Bar
The
Bunker Bar February ‘golfer of the month’ Peter Habgood gets some help
ringing the bell from Lily.
Monday, Feb. 28, Khaow
Kheow - Stableford
A large group turned up to play the always popular Khaow
Kheow and it was two regulars who haven’t been winning much lately who took
the honours. John Hughes won the B Flight and Alan Sullivan had the best
round of the day to win the A Flight.
A count-back decided second and third places in the A
Flight; Tony Robbins edging Dave Harvey for the runner up spot and Gerry
Cooney was the unlucky one to lose out altogether!
Peter Habgood’s second place in the B Flight was enough
to win him the golfer of the month title for February.
A Flight
1st Alan Sullivan (13) 37pts
2nd Tony Robbins (14) 35pts
3rd Dave Harvey (14) 35pts

2nd Peter Habgood (16) 32pts
3rd Mike Corner (21) 30pts

Wednesday, March 2, Greenwood - Stableford
John Graham made a winning return to golf with the Bunker
Boys, winning with the best round of the day and taking a near pin prize
too! Dave Ashman took second spot and another count-back between three
players was needed to decide the minor places; Frank Waterhouse claimed
third place, Mike Corner took fourth and Jerry Waselenkof lost out.

2nd Dave Askman (13) 33pts
3rd Frank Waterhouse (16) 32pts
4th Mike Corner (21) 32pts

Friday, March 4, The Emerald - Stableford
Steady rain greeted the golfers who turned up for
breakfast this morning and with the forecast predicting rain all day it
wasn’t looking too good to get a round in.
After several phone calls to check on the weather in
different parts of the region the amateur weathermen amongst the Bunker Boys
cancelled Crystal Bay and decided to head south of Pattaya, hoping the rain
was travelling north, and would have stopped by the time we got to the
hastily booked Emerald. Well, lo’ and behold, the forecasters were correct
and hardly a drop of rain was seen all day!y!
Cyril Wallwork took advantage of the damp (similar to the
UK) conditions and won the comp with a respectable 35 points.
1st Cyril Wallwork (10) 35pts
2nd Mark Stanley (11) 31pts
3rd Arthur Rowley (28) 29pts
Near Pins: Lee Butler, Cyril Wallwork and Mark Stanley.

Gosnells’ gorilla grabs the limelight at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Monday
winners (L-R) Doug Maiko, Mike Gosden and Jan Lovgreen.
San Mig Stu & Peter
Blackburn
Monday, Feb. 28, Khao
Kheow A&B - Stableford
We welcomed visitors from Denmark, Lotte Boskov and Arne
Max Pedersen, and Australian John Howard (not the former Prime Minister,
although he has met him) from Gosnells Golf Club in Perth.
There were 29 cards handed in at the end of the round
following confrontation with the C and A nines at Khao Kheow today, and a
number of golfers deservedly walked off well pleased with their game after
battling in fairly hot and still conditions for about four and a half hours.
Having been informed by the caddy-master that he was
lucky today as his usual caddy was unavailable and also being the recipient
of a recent golf lesson from fellow Gosnells golfer Martin Todd, the gorilla
from Gosnells Golf Club, Mike Gosden, went on to play great and shot 41
points, as did Doug Maiko whilst four others, Brian Gabe, Jan Lovgreen,
Johannes Jonsson and Rob Brown, played to handicap or better.
SMS was severely handicapped as he forgot to bring along
his beer cooler. This presented dire consequences for his day on the course
and almost resulted in him winning the dreaded Compass Cap. It did not help
his temperament to see the girls in the drinks stop leave the drinks cooler
doors open every time they served a drink! How is a man to get a cold bloody
beer if he doesn’t have a beer cooler and the bar staff try to air-condition
the world via a fridge? ... Patience I am learning here in Thailand, but
watching beer cool in a bag of ice is very trying when one has a thirst up!
Other than that complaint, Khao Kheow is definitely a
most enjoyable and challenging course to play. Despite some very early
season heavy rains over recent days, which made for little run and slower
than usual greens, it was and always is very well presented and full credit
and appreciation must go to all the field staff concerned. Ditto for the
staff at the club house, as the facilities there are also always first
class.

Deefa the Dog was well patronized by all who won a prize
today and also by some who just wanted to give a bit of money which they
know will go toward helping improve the lives of some less fortunate Pattaya
children.
The Compass Cap was won by Kurt Sandgaard and the
children of Pattaya thank you Kurt and all the other donors for your
contributions today.
Mike Gosden always has a “probing question” which he
directs to any unsuspecting golfer at the commencement of presentations. As
far as SMS is aware only once has a golfer correctly answered the question
which resulted in Rob Brown collecting a prize. Today’s question was
strangely enough issued to Rob again but alas he did not know the answer:
“What is the 4th hole at the Old Course known as?”
Answer: Ginger Beer.
Thursday, March 3,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
‘The Admiral’, recently retired from organizational
duties, still can’t help himself as he announced at 0814hrs “Load ‘em up”
and 32 keen golfers were very soon on their way to Treasure Hill. The
weather was fine although ‘The Admiral’ did have some doubt that they would
get through their rounds without getting “wet bottoms”. As it was they were
lucky as the rain commenced as they were leaving the course to return home.
Reports on the condition of the course were unanimously
favourable which is very good to hear although putting was somewhat tricky
due to some of the greens being sanded and some pin positions placed
somewhat “naughtily”.
The rounds were completed in around four hours and forty
minutes which is not too bad for this testing layout.
The difficulty of the course was borne out by the fact
that only A Flight winners were able to play anywhere near their handicaps
(B Flight winner being the exception).
‘Mr. Consistency’ himself Neils Hansen just took out the
top flight while there was a 3-way count-back for second, third and fourth
places with Mike Gosden prevailing over another consistent golfer Rob Brown,
and Richard Kubicki bringing up the rear.
It was Bon Voyage to Rob & Karen Brown who are heading
back to the UK. Thanks to them for their loyal support to Caf้ Kronborg and
please come back soon.
B Flight was easily won by Leif Kirkgaard with Per Olav
Barli second and Jan Lovgren third. Peter Hammond beat his old mate Mike
Winfield into fourth place on a count-back.
Stand in Thursday Organiser Mick O’Connor’s 33 points was
good enough to win C Flight with Kenny Chung four points further back in
second place. There was another count-back required to decide third and
fourth places with Bent Moeller prevailing over Kjeld Ravn.
A Flight (0-14)
1st Neils Hansen (14) 37pts
2nd Mike Gosden (11) 36pts
3rd Rob Brown (6) 36pts
4th Richard Kubicki (11) 36pts
B Flight (15-21)
1st Leif Kirkgaard (21) 39pts
2nd Per Olav Barli (17) 32pts
3rd Jan Lovgren (21) 31pts
4th Peter Hammond (20) 30pts
C Flight (22+)
1st Mick O’Connor (23) 33pts
2nd Kenny Chung (23) 29pts
3rd Bent Moeller (28) 28pts
4th Kjeld Ravn (22) 28pts
Near Pins: Neils Hansen, Jan Lovgren, Rob Brown, Per Olav Barli
Long Putts: Mick O’Connor, Jan Lovgren
Poor old Elias Magnusson had a “horror” day and was
presented with the Compass Cap and once more Deefa had a very good day
whilst collecting many donations which of course will be handed over to
charity at some point in the near future.

Grimoldby a class apart at Pleasant Valley
PSC golf from the Fairway Golf Society
Monday, Feb. 28, Pleasant
Valley – Stableford
A very pleasant time was had by everybody today, playing
off of the blue tees with 20 golfers so just one division.
Friday’s winner Alan Pilkington.
Except for the runaway winner Martin Grimoldby, with 42
points off a 6 handicap, it was very tight for the rest of the places as
Joop Medez and Jason Cole lost out for fourth place to Brian Neal on a 24-16
& 24-17 count-back, all with 36 points. Second place was also won on
count-back with Brian Libby losing out 18-16 to Curt Sliven, both on 37
points.
Congratulations to Martin for a fantastic level par round
and also to (Jekyl & Hyde) Brian Neals for his magnificent 24 points on the
back nine. What went wrong on the front nine Brian?
Near pins went to Martin Grimoldby, Ning Neal, Ken Priddy
and Jason Cole.
1st Martin Grimoldby (6) 42pts
2nd Curt Sliven (21) 37pts
3rd Brian Libby (9) 37pts
4th Brian Neal (16) 36pts
Wednesday, March 2, Greenwood – Stableford
Another good day was had at Greenwood except for a 35mins
delay due to yet another tropical storm which stopped play (what’s happening
to the weather here?)
Most golfers finished the round but a few called it a day
and returned to the club house early. Some of the guys that quit early were
new to Thailand and could not believe that the course would be playable
after such a downpour. But as we expats know, the courses here dry out
amazingly quickly so we were patient and went on to finish the round.
One division today with 26 players and only two of them
managing to break par: Joop Medze going up in handicap to 18 scored 38
points while the ever-improving Harvey Samuels, coming down to 16, still
managed to score 37 points. Keep it going Harvey!
Near Pins went to Ning Neal (2), Nicky Clow and Scott
Dobbin.
1st Joop Medze (18) 38pts
2nd Harvey Samuels (16) 37pts
3rd Billy Vickers (14) 33pts
4th Tony Duthie (20) 32pts
Friday, March 4, Crystal Bay – Stableford
Buddha was with us today because when we left the
Fairways it was pouring with rain and it continued all the way to the
course. We decided not to pay a green fee just have a cup of coffee and
return home. Miraculously, within 10 minutes, the rain stopped so we decided
to take a chance and play. This was a very good decision as we never had
another drop of rain and the course dried out really quickly.
Only one player, Alan Pilkington, managed to break par
today, although another golfer, namely Nicky Clow, managed to break his
3-wood in half after wrapping it around a tree on the 11th hole. Plenty of
comments about this the most obvious being he should have used a tree iron.
It just wasn’t Nick’s day as he also lost out on count-back for third place.
Twenty plus players today so we had 1 division and the
‘Muscles from Brussels’ Patrick Engles was in the frame yet again with a 1
over par round. The near pins meanwhile went to Terry Droy, Alan Pilkington,
Tony Duthie and Jesse Alpen.
1st Alan Pilkington (9) 39pts
2nd Patrick Engles (17) 35pts
3rd Steve Durey (20) 33pts
4th
Nicky Clow (27) 33pts
Note: The Fairways is situated at the top of
Pattaya Klang on the Sukhumvit Road and the group plays every Sunday,
Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Anyone wishing to play with our society can
call in and put their name down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084
389 2327. Transport & breakfast provided if required.

LeNoury storms home
at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar
Monday, Feb. 28,Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Peter LeNoury (10) 39pts
2nd Don Bland (4) 38pts
3rd Tom Balch (27) 37pts
4th Roger Griffin (20) 34pts
Near Pin: Don Bland
Today we welcomed back Roger Griffin, Jeff Johnson and KC
from the Lone Star State of Texas and said good bye to ‘Wireless’.
Peter LeNoury stormed the back nine and finished on 39
points to take the frame. Don Bland stumbled early but managed a decent back
to finish alone in second on 38 points. January monthly medal winner Tommy
Boy Balch was third on 37 and fresh from the plane (via Walking Street) was
Roger Griffin in fourth with a respectable 34 points.
Wednesday, March 2,
Crystal Bay – Stableford
1st Brad Sproxton (11) 36pts
2nd Jim Mills (15) 34pts
3rd
Grant Montgomery (7) 33pts
‘Kaptain Klipboard’ dodged a few sporadic blobs and
managed to hold on to a 36-pointer and finish on top of an abbreviated field
of 10 players. Jim Mills was second alone on 34 points and Grant Montgomery
nipped out Peter Hynard for third.
A smaller field and a virtual empty course made for a sub
4 hour round - nice to see for the tail-end of the high season.
Friday, March 4, The
Emerald – Stableford
1st Don Bland (4) 37pts
2nd Grant Montgomery (7) 35pts
3rd
Warren Holland (21) 34pts
Overcast skies and a small drizzle did not dampen the
spirits of the 19 brave souls who took on the Emerald challenge today.
Don Bland proved the best mudder and finished on top with
4 birdies and 37 points. Grant Montgomery, playing his last round for this
visit, went out on the podium with a second place and 35 points (come back
and see us again mate!) Warren Holland finished in the deuce pot and third
overall with 34 points.

Tony & Mam lead the way
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday’s podium winners (left-right) Allan, Joel, Mam & Tony.
Tuesday, March 1, The
Emerald - Stableford
The start of a new month already and a trip to Emerald
where it was hoped some good rounds would be to the fore. The course was in
ok condition only, following heavy traffic over the preceding high season,
with a couple of tees also undergoing some refurbishment.
Two divisions today, with the split at 20+, where in the
higher flight it was Mam (32) leading the way with 31 points to edge out
Joel Flor (21) by the solitary point. Joel himself managed to beat both
Jimmy and Brian on a count-back.
In the lower handicap flight it was Tony Chetland (18)
who had been threatening a good round and who came good with a solid 37
points, again separated by just the 1 point from Allan Cassin (12) with 36.
Tony made the most of his good form, snaring 2 near pins while Allan and
Graham also nabbed one each.
Thursday, March 3,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Thursday saw a smaller field gather at Mountain Shadow to
test themselves from the blue tees. For some it was more of a test than for
others, as putting became a trial that they were unable to rise to, Jeff and
Derek come particularly to mind.
Bob Edwards (13) coped best to record a respectable 34
points, with Allan Cassin (12) signing for 31 points to round out the prize
rundown. Near pins were shared around between Bob, Jeff and Allan, the
latter being the only one to convert for a ‘2’. Due to the afore mentioned
putting woes, Jeff managed to convert for a wipe, bummer!
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday).
Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside
hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc.,
please call 089 094 1841 or 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers &
Good Golfing!

Dayle Hoek - just champion
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Lewiinski’s Golf Manager, Colin Davis, left, presents the Club Championship
trophy to Dayle Hoek.
Feb. 27 –March 6, Green
Valley – Lewiinski’s Open
On the advertising marquee, the Lewiinski’s Open is
billed as “just golf and four days of it, at that”. A demanding format that
cynics have deemed “over the top” but it continues to grow in popularity.
For the curious, the format is to play all four rounds on
the tacit home course of the society, Green Valley. The first two days are
stroke play with the top 50 percent and ties going on to day three and four
of stroke play after a day’s break between games. Those who feel the lash of
the cut clean their slate and play a two day stableford. The girls meantime
have their own four day stableford competition running the extent of the
event.
Jum
Karagit accepts the ladies championship trophy from the Golf Manager, Colin
Davis.
Last year witnessed a stirring battle between Nick
Strasshine, Dave Dobson and Steve Mulberry (the eventual winner). This year
the story was no less compelling but for different reasons.
Steve Mulberry made it quite clear he was not about to
relinquish the trophy without a fight as he broke from the gate quickly with
a net 69 to establish a two stroke lead. The ten handicapper was closely
pursued by an elite group including former winner Jack Grindvold, Peter Le
Noury, Ed’ the right honorable’ Wyckoff and ‘the silent assassin’ himself
Colm Mullen, all just two shots back. But it is not a one day tournament!
On the ladies side Jum Karagit led the first day charge
on 37 points to take a two shot lead over Yui Bietry.
On day two John Dearden surged to pole with a best to
date net 64 masterpiece to wrest the lead from Steve Mulberry. Thierry
Petremont moved up to second place via a net 69. Defending champ Steve
Mulberry slipped down to third with a two over net 74 while Peter Henshaw
and Peter Le Noury were hovering on joint net scores of 146.
The halfway cut was made at 154.
In the ladies four day stableford comp, Jum Karagit
posted her second consecutive 37 points to move 9 strokes clear of the
chasing pack.
Day three saw John Darden’s ambitions nosedive and the
wheels well and truly came off as he added a net 83 to his overhaul total.
Claude Harder fashioned an even par round to move into first place with a
216 point overall score. Jack Grindvold (net 69) and defending champion
Steve Mulberry with a net75 moved back into joint second place.
Dayle Hoek, accompanied by the good Captain Pierre
Bietry, were lying just behind a stroke back with an overall total of 219.
The ladies comp seemed to be sewn up as Jum Karagit added
39 more points to extend her mammoth lead.
The final day of the competition had the field abuzz as
the pressure mounted. Regrettably the two former winners Jack Grindvold and
Steve Mulberry fell back and off the podium altogether. Dayle Hoek, who
plays as a member of the Peninsula Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia,
showed the stamina as one would expect for a man of his fitness and relative
youth to post an even par round that saw him crowned the 2011 Lewinski golf
champion. Claude Harder was the first runner up leaving Thierry Petremont to
take the last podium place.
The converted low gross went to Bob ‘Seamless’ Newell, a
remarkable feat for a man who has suffered multiple illness this last year.
As expected Jum Karagit won the ladies comp with a total
147 four day total points.
There was plenty of action for those not in the hunt for
the big prize. Twenty six players who missed the cut or who elected to drop
down battled it out for the plate. Two players broke from the gate with 42
points, Gill Sayer and Lawrie McBride, followed by Gary Blackburne two shots
back.
The two leading plate competitors swapped places on the
second day to give Lawrie McBride the victory on 77 points and Gill Sayer
was second on 75 points, leaving Garry Blackburne to fill the podium.
Apologies to those overlooked, while the Lewinski’s Open
preparation forced the one week suspension of scribe’s weekly ramblings,
undoubtedly a relief to some and certainly so for the English language.
A couple of highlights were Sean Murphy for his gracious
bell ring after winning the snowball on the first day, Geoff Kubas for his
win at the Emerald on Monday and Eddy Beilby’s fine last day top score of
68.
Sadly we were informed that a caddy from Green Valley was
knocked down and killed on her way to work, the lads dipped into their
pockets and raised 16,400 to help her family.
The night concluded with Bob ‘Seamless’ taking the hat
round for ‘Honest’ Lou Zigzag. Bob’s good deed amounted to three bottle
tops, one franc, one yen, and a cyanide pill.
Note: Lewinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

It’s Lusha ‘the crusher’ again
PSC Phoenix Tuesday & Friday Golf Group
Tuesday’s winners pose for a photo with the staff at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Yes folks, it’s amazing. When you are in form it seems to
last a couple of weeks. After a sizzling net 68 the previous week, David
Lusha scored well again this past week in the A Flight with a fine 37 points
to beat the canny Hugh Byrne (36pts) into second and the departing for
European skies Goort Gelten, who scored 34 points to narrowly beat Kevin
Callaghan on count-back for third.
Hopefully David will become human again by next week and
give someone else a chance to win.
The B Flight was even better with the ‘Blarney Boy’ Eamon
Murtagh notching up 39 points, and that included a four-putt on one of the
greens! In second place was David (the Palm Reader) Czernie with 37 points
and coming third was the other ‘Blarney Boy’ John Bartley with an even par
36.
Near pins went to Mike Gerrard, John Stafford, Damien
Molloy and David Lusha.
The day started with far more players than we had tee
times but I have to say that the course marshals are usually very helpful
and seem to turn a blind eye. When they have timed groups at 8 minutes it
does not take a genius to work out how to get the players away quickly so
that 7 groups get out in the space of 5 tee times.
We all got round the Lakes and Ocean course pretty
quickly as well, and with the weather kind to us this week the day went very
well.
Back at the Relax Bar the lucky draw winners this week
were Peter Wathall (sadly leaving us this week for a few months), Colin
Weaver, who luckily won the free massage donated by the Relax Bar (Colin had
pulled a muscle in his back playing today so he received the right treatment
for nothing), the free drink, also donated by the Relax Bar, went to Damien
Molloy and the last lucky draw prize went to Landis Brooks.
So out of 25 entrants this week it was only the ones who
did not return to the presentation who failed to get a return.
Our next Monthly Stroke play tournament will be on
Tuesday 29th March and this month (as last) we will have the two sponsors of
Trattoria Italiana and KPK Foods donating prizes for the best scores.
As of the 1st April 2011, Phoenix Golf Club will revert
to Sports Day rates for Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s at 900 baht
green fee for all visitors. All the other days of the week will be at their
normal rates for visitors, but if you wish to play on a Friday with our
little group (from blue tees) you can still enjoy the member guest rate of
1,000 BAHT green fee. For information regarding golf or fishing please call
me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

We visited Treasure Hills on Monday with twenty one

handicap adjustment and in second was Alan McGarvie.
The third division saw Noel Larkin (35pts) topping the

Sea fishing from Bangsaray
Keith
Keohane shows off his pompano catch.
Mike Gerrard
Ahoy all of you mangy scurvy sea dogs!
Once again, we set sail into the unknown at about 7.00am
on Thursday, Feb. 24 and after many local storms in the area we were a
little concerned what the weather might be like for the day. No worries
though as the whole day was as calm as it could be and not a spot of rain.
Only four of us on the boat today as we learned on the
morning that one of our passengers had being involved in a road accident the
day before and one of the others (his friend) was helping to take care of a
few things for him. Never mind, more room on the boat for the rest of us. We
learned later by way of a telephone call that thankfully the guy was not too
seriously injured as first thought.
We stopped at a place where we were very fortunate last
trip out, only some 30 minutes from the harbour. However, after a couple of
hours at this spot it was obvious we were not going to be so lucky again. So
off we set for another area of the ocean where there are usually some bigger
species lurking. Once again we were unlucky and so the day went on like
this.
It was then onto drifting with the tide, fishing and
searching for the smaller varieties. This was much more successful and many
pladaeng and few snapper were caught.
At last, at the end of the day, our dear mate Keith
Keohane got hooked up to a nice pompano. Very fitting this because Keith,
who is the owner of KPK Foods Ltd. has started donating a voucher once a
month for the best catch of the day - this to be spent in his retail shop at
the back of Carrefour off Pattaya Klang. Well, he could hardly award it to
himself so this trip it was newcomer Ken Woolley who was the winner.
At about 5.00 p.m. we had all had enough and decided to
turn the wheel back to shore. It was suggested that the recent storms had
something to do with the lack of larger varieties today and that was
supported by the lack of large fish being caught by any other boat this day
as well.
Never mind, the day on the ocean with good friends is
very relaxing and enjoyable. We charter a very good boat, approx 60 feet
long with full bathroom facilities, coffee making facilities and an upper
deck for a relaxing snooze if you want one. We also think that our skipper
is one of the best in the area, as proved by recent catches. Anyone
interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for further information.
