Thai GMM Grammy artists to
headline Jesters Children’s Fair this year!
With just 16 days to go before our Fair comes to your
neighborhood, we are proud to announce that Thai GMM Grammy, the biggest
media conglomerate entertainment company in Thailand, has agreed to provide
4 artists this year.
Headlining our main event will be: Techin (Kum Torb
Korng Hua-Jai), Mic Idol, Ten (When I am Feeling Blue), Mic Idol,
Atom (Style: Girl Hip Hop/Breaking/Street Jazz) and Som, or Wink (Style:
Pop/R&B). So tell your teen-aged children that these young stars are coming
to town to entertain them at our Jesters Children’s Fair at Diana Garden
Resort and Driving Range on Sunday, September 12 th
in North Pattaya.
Fair day stalls: Get them while they last!
We thought potential stallholders might want to see what
kinds of stalls have already been booked as of August 21st. We cannot help
but think that given the usual 4000 - 5000 people that normally show up at
our Fair, which includes local expats and Thais; that the 9 food stalls
booked so far will have a field day between the 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. timings of
our event.
If you would like to rent a stall, we urge you to do so
soon. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up through our site
(www.care4kids.info) in the right hand margin of our homepage. Payment is
not due until the day of the Fair.
Our white event shirts are NOW in stock!
This year’s event shirts are now available. We are
selling them at 300 baht apiece at our usual outlets: Jameson’s, Viking
Beachcomber, and the TQ. You can also order shirts through our committee
members or by contacting us at [email protected]
They will also be available on Fair Day while they last.

Blind Students receive expert singing lessons
Derek Franklin
It is not every day that a world renowned tenor
visits Pattaya, but Korean opera star Kim Jun Man did just that recently
and visited the Pattaya School for the Blind.
Learning how to breathe properly.
On arrival at the school the choir gave a beautiful
rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’, then it was Mr. Kim’s turn to sing, and
the students were amazed to hear such a wonderful sound. This was the
first time most of the students had heard a live tenor, and they could
not believe just how loud Mr. Kim could sing.
Mr. Kim offered to give advice and several students
came forward. The first piece of advice was to learn how to breathe
properly and how to project the voice. The students are used to singing
into a microphone so there is no need to project their voices, but Mr.
Kim taught them to feel their diaphragm and told them that if they sing
from there they will be able to make themselves heard, hold notes longer
and reach higher notes.
Much fun was had as the students listened to Mr. Kim
singing scales and then they tried to copy him. Unfortunately several of
the younger teenage boys are going through puberty and reaching the
higher notes is not easy when your voice is breaking.
Mr. Kim was accompanied to the school by Apsorn
Kurmarohita, president of Sunset Village Beach Resort, and Sook Yhun,
president of Media Concepts Asia. The students thanked Mr. Kim and his
guests and offered the invitation to make another visit to the school
next time he is in Pattaya.
The Pattaya School for the Blind is managed by the
Father Ray Foundation. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org
or email [email protected]

More success for Asian University’s Engineering Faculty:
Dr. Danai Torrungrueng’s
sabbatical-leave in Ohio, USA
Dr.
Danai (right) and engineering alumni
at the Buddhist Temple of America in California.
Susan Joyce
From June 16 to July 30, 2010, Asst. Prof. Dr. Danai
Torrungrueng was on sabbatical leave to carry out research on
computational electromagnetics (CEM) with Prof. Joel T. Johnson at the
ElectroScience Laboratory (ESL), The Ohio State University (OSU), in
Columbus Ohio, USA (http://electroscience.osu.edu/).
Dr. Danai writes about his experiences:
“The collaboration between Asian University and the
OSU has been strengthened in terms of research and Asian University
student recruitment with scholarships offered for graduate studies at
the OSU. My sabbatical-leave period was very enjoyable and productive.”
From July 11 to 17, 2010, Dr. Danai, his colleagues
and his students presented three conference papers at the 2010 IEEE
International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and CNC/USNC/URSI
Radio Science Meeting (http://www.apsursi2010. org/) held at the
Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. One of the papers was
presented by Ms. Varittha Sanphuang, a 4th year Electrical and
Electronic Engineering undergraduate student. These papers will be
expanded to become journal papers for future submission.
In addition, Dr. Danai met Asian University
engineering alumni, Dr. Noppasin Niumsuwan, Theeraputh Mekathikom and
Eric Lerspreuks, at the Buddhist Temple of America in California prior
to returning back to Thailand.
Another piece of good news from the University: The
US Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs has approved the
engineering program at Asian University for undergraduate study. The
University is looking forward to welcoming new American veteran
undergraduates later this month, at the start of the academic year.
Supported by the American Veteran education program, the veterans will
be joining the engineering faculty under the Post 9/11 Veterans’
Educational Assistance Act of 2008. (Or the Post 9/11 GI Bill.)

Students receive awards during
Mothers’ Day celebration at REPS
Janette Bagsic
Mothers’ Day was celebrated in REPS (Rayong English
Programme School) this year on Wednesday, August 11. Prior to the
awaited event teachers and students were already busy engaging in
various activities to show honor and tribute to all mothers. Students
participated in different activities and contests such as Mothers’ Day
essay writing, drawing and painting contests.
Mix, Rujikorn Taeskul (P.3/) won third prize in ‘The Queen, Mother of
Siam’ drawing contest - Junior Primary School Section.
On the day of the special event, held in the Garden
International School Hall, students were thrilled to receive their
awards. The program started out with a touching slide presentation about
mothers, followed by a mixture of performances from Thai traditional
songs and dances to funky and modern hip-hop that were presented by
selected students from kindergarten up to Mathayom.
As the show progressed, many parents were impressed
to see how confident their children carried out themselves as they sang,
danced, acted and played musical instruments.
It was a wonderful day with a range of performances
dedicated to all the mothers. Congratulations to the winners and thanks
to all students and staff for the hard work. To all the mothers who
came, Thank You!
A

Funky P1 and P3 students dance to Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”.
Students act out a scene in one of the drama performances.
