PATTAPA SPORTS ROUND-UP

Bangsaen Speed Festival coming next weekend

Vimolrat Singnikorn
The third year of the biggest motor sport festival in Thailand, “Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival 2009”, is to take place between November 27 and 29 at Laem Thaen, Bangsaen beach.

Huge crowds are expected in Bangsaen next week to witness top class street racing in the third edition of the Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival.

Sontaya Kunplome, former minister of Tourism and Sports, Wittaya Kunplome, President of Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization, and Sawat Hompume, Mayor of Saensuk Municipality, chaired a press conference for the event on November 5.
At the conference it was announced that following the success of previous editions of the festival, this year it was anticipated that more racers, sponsors, government organizations, the press and motor sport fans than ever would be supporting the event. The organizers also have put more emphasis on safety this year and the racing surfaces have been improved, the lanes have been expanded and the safety net fencing has been heightened and reinforced.
The roads are to be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, starting November 25, for practices and for the races themselves. The 3.7 km racing route – Thailand’s longest motor sport route –has been created in the Saen Suk area of Bangsaen.
Apart from the racing, there will be a fair selling motor sport related products, fun games for the children, displays of cars by different automobile clubs, and a firework display on the evening of November 27, at the beach at Laem Thaen.

Pattaya Cricket Club wins first trophy

It may not be the ‘Ashes’, but Pattaya Cricket Club won their first trophy in their first competition at the Bangkok Cricket Sixes earlier this month, organized by the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour. A cricket tournament in the country’s capital, hosted by Harrow International School, was a perfect way for PCC to begin their cricketing history.
The squad of eight players met for the very first time to identify themselves to the captain Simon Philbrook, to each other and construct a battle plan to beat the opposition. It soon became apparent there was a distinct shortage of batting and bowling but a considerable amount of experience and it was the experience factor that the side based their tactics on. The format was five 5-ball overs, one to be bowled by each fielder.
Having drawn the reigning tournament champions Etihad in the opening fixture a more severe test could not have been wished for. It is fair to say the game did not go well, PCC even lost the toss, but the first fixture had been played and the Club was on the cricketing map.
To make matters even worse the Club’s second and last group game was against the eventual tournament winners The Falcons from Singapore. However, the team had obviously learnt a lot from their opening game as the batting was more resilient with most batters making starts but unable to make the telling blows. The bowling was straighter, albeit not frightening, and The Falcons reached their target of 45 with an over to spare.
The pick of the bowlers was Richard Wibrow and wily Bob Newell, an ex minor county player who proved bowling was like riding a bike, only you go a lot slower. Unfortunately, Bob pulled a fetlock with his last delivery and his tournament was reduced from then on to carrying the drinks.
The two losses meant that PCC were in the ‘lower’ cup division, but the opposition did look considerably more inviting. At this stage the winners of the ‘lower’ division would be decided on a league basis with the three teams competing against each other to establish the victors.
PCC won the toss and elected to bowl first against their local rivals from Ban Chang. The atmosphere was highly charged and the players could sense this was a special day, especially as a bus load of supporters had arrived to lend their considerable vocal support and they duly responded to the occasion.
The bowling and fielding was tigerish, with Richard Holt and John Giuffrida bowling tight opening overs to put Ban Chang on the back foot. John held on to a remarkable caught and bowled chance to remove the big hitting Ban Chang opener Lalit Sadhvani. The momentum was continued by Paul Coleman and Mark Thomson, whilst Simon Philbrook finished the innings leaving PCC a total of 42 to chase.
Just over 8 runs an over should not have been too difficult a task, but a fine opening couple of overs by the Ban Chang boys put some pressure on the PCC openers of Simon and John. But it was John who relieved the pressure with a series of boundaries in the middle of the innings and Simon then hit form to finish the match in the final over with four balls to spare.
Having watched the opposition in the group battle out a close match, it meant that PCC and Bangkok Crossroads Bar would meet with the winners taking the trophy.
Again, PCC won the toss and stuck with the winning formula of inserting Bangkok Crossroads Bar. Once more the bowling was accurate, but Bangkok Crossroads attacked the openers and scored at over 10 an over. But, the boys stuck to their task, with Jez Lees holding on to an important running catch and restricted Bangkok Crossroads to a competitive total of 55.
In reply, Simon and John got PCC off to a solid start but John was run out taking a risky second run. Tight bowling and the loss of two more wickets kept the game in the balance. With eleven runs needed from the last 3 balls and the supporters in a state of wild hysteria, Mark Thomson hit two runs, but was run out attempting a third. This brought Simon on to strike with nine required from the final 2 balls. A huge 6 over mid wicket brought the crowd to their feet and PCC to the verge of victory. The final ball was full and on off stump and a late cut to third man enabled Richard Holt to test his hamstrings to the maximum and scamper in to beat the ball and secure a very satisfying and nail biting victory for PCC. Their first tournament and their first trophy.
PCC, based at Horseshoe Point in Pattaya, will have a full size cricket ground and two practice wickets ready for December and would like to invite anyone interested in playing or supporting to come along and be part of what will be an exciting time for the Club. Please contact Simon on 0870 395 790 or email pattayacricketclub@ gmail.com for more details.

Wylie and Edwards are the class act at Emerald

PSC Memorial Golf Tournament 2009

Derek Brook
Friday, Nov. 13, The Emerald – 2-ball scramble
This was always going to be a difficult tournament to run and report on because mo matter how hard we try we are always going to forget someone. However, we tried our best and it was suitable that this event was held during the week that the world remembered those no longer with us, or as golfers say, those playing golf up there. We will remember them.

The Memorial Tournament winners, Jeff Wylie (center) and Dave Edwards (left) with the PSC Golf Chairman Perry McNeeley.
The tournament was essentially a carry over from ‘The Grey Goose’ that was so expertly run out of Don McAllister’s bar in Bang Chang, but with him joining those ‘Also Playing Up There’, the PSC decided to take the day on and make it for all the members who have passed on. I think the day was successful and all who played did so in the correct spirit. We also, in the spirit of the day, decided to continue to play at the original location of the Emerald in Bang Chang.

Third placed Stefan Goranston and Bo Holgesson collect their trophies from Perry.
Max and Perry toiled away on the organisation, and the Scribe went through his treasure trove of nearly 10 years of photos of members of PSC to form a photo arcade. Thanks are given to those who added photos and if you have a name we missed or a photo, please send it to PSC for inclusion in next year’s tournament photo arcade.
The day started hot and Max and Matt were there early to book all the people in, along with Keith who passed out the shirts. We had a full house and indeed, at least 30 other people could not be fitted in. We thank all for coming for this very special day.

Mod Churaiska (right) and Amphum North (left) took fifth with a net 64.
The players started off the 1st and 10th, and all in all it went well and we played fast, with only a couple of groups waiting on the 1st when they came from the 18th. The fairways were fine if a little dry, and the greens were very fast and difficult to hold, particularly as they are nearly all elevated. The day was very hot with little breeze and the players were struggling physically by the time they were well into their round. Still, we all got around somehow.
The showers were ‘cosy’, what more can one say when about 130 players tried to get through them. Still one must make some sacrifice. The restaurant, which is probably the only outside one on the circuit, was well packed and the food cheap and good. Thanks go to the management of The Emerald for their help and assistance on this day.

Runners up Mike Alidi (center) and Patrice Bardy (left) recorded a net 63.
We all then went home, before we re-convened at Shenanigans Jomtien at 1900hrs. Well that is the time we were supposed to meet, but it took me well over one hour to get there from Pattaya. Patience is a virtue!
Most were already there in the queue for food, and as all know the food here is superb. Thanks go to the management of this fine establishment and I hope the success of the night will allow them to put enough money to one side so they can pay their electricity bill.
The plan for the golf was a 2-ball scramble and so we decided to have seven places.

Fourth placed Ernst Hansen (left), minus his playing partner Al Townhill, receives his prize vouchers from the Golf Chairman.
Coming home in seventh place were Moe Deverenne and Larry Immenthun with a net 65 on count back over Rick Smith and Brian Erb. In sixth place were Bob Newall and Mark Wood with a net 64.5 while Mod Churaiska and Amphum North took fifth on net 64, just losing out on count back to Al Townhill and Ernst Hanson for fourth. The third placed team was Stefan Goranston and Bo Holgesson with a net 63.5 and the runners up were Mike Alidi and Patrice Bardy with a net 63.

Bob Newall and Mark Wood (left & center) finished in sixth place with a net 64.5.
So to the winners of the inaugural Memorial Tournament and with a great score of net 59, Jeff Wylie and Dave Edwards went into the record books. Well done and well done Perry, Max and all who produced such a fine poignant day. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Alistair Robertson, Geoff Parker, Kamol Thongkiao, Joachim Oestricher, Chant Schulera, Bob Benda, Daryl Evans (2), Alan Ewing, Arild Townhill, Roger Stromstedt, Dom Carmody, Mark Wood, Hamilton Wilson, Frank Watson.
Long Drives: Rob Brown, Stephen Goranssan, John Ginnane, Peter Whitehead, Chant Schwulera

Sunday Golf at Green Valley Rayong is a recent IPGC initiative designed to provide a Sunday golfing option to all IPGC members in a stableford format. This is in addition to the PGS Sunday golf run from the Rabbi’s Elephant bar which visits different venues.
The group meets every Sunday at Green Valley at 1030 and enjoys discounted green fees at this outstanding golf course. Presentations are conducted in the Golf Centre Bar, Green Valley, immediately after the golf with amiable hosts John and Geoff providing sustenance served by their delightful staff.
The Sunday events have received strong support from the Irish contingent who were represented in the winner’s enclosure on Nov. 8 by Alec Hoare. Equally impressive were the steady rounds from Rob Nabbe and Rodney Hayes, both visiting from Australia, and local stalwarts Harry Riley and Phil Mitchell.
The winning position for Nov. 15 went to another local boy, Charles Shepherd, who overcame recent poor form to sweep the opposition aside and record a magnificent victory. We were pleased to welcome a single lady golfer on this day, Toni Nichols from Foster, north of Sydney, Australia, is holidaying in Pattaya and playing with the Haven Hotel. Toni achieved a credible 32 points and we hope to enjoy her company at future events.
Further details on Sunday Golf at Green Valley are available from Russell Exley on mobile 084 782 4582.

Hats off to the ‘Motown Man’

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Thomas Cotton
Tuesday, Nov. 10, Khao Kheow - Stableford
For some of us, Khao Kheow is a very special course, since it is such a challenge to get a good score there. Two weeks prior, we had played KK, but it was a miserably slow day, with play taking six hours. This day, however, we were much luckier and the play was at normal speed, which I believe, must have helped the scores, which were considerably higher than two weeks ago.
As you may have heard, things are not too rosy in Detroit these days and Detroit is from whence our mate, Brian Gabe hales. Brian finds Pattaya just the perfect place to escape from the despondency of Detroit, where many people have lost their jobs and property prices have plunged. But Brian, always cheerful, was able to put all that behind himself this day and score a magnificent 42 points, a full 6 points better than his handicap on a course where it is unusual for players to reach their handicap and indeed this day, Mashi was the only other golfer able to best his handicap.
Our Captain mentioned that in hundreds of competitions held at KK, few players were able to meet their handicaps and less than a handful had ever reached 40 points like Brian did this day.
So our hats are off to the Motown Man and let’s hope that he takes his good luck, skill or whatever back to Detroit with him.
1st Brian Gabe 42pts
2nd Mashi Kenata 37pts
3rd Perry McNeely 33pts
4th Paul Brown 31pts
5th Peter Whitehead 30pts
Near Pins: Bill Knight, Paul Brown, TC.

Easton & Wilson carve up the spoils at Emerald

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Damian Trant
Monday, Nov. 9, The Emerald – Stableford
For the first time in quite awhile The Emerald was the venue and, with what is becoming a regular occurrence with the Caddyshack at the moment, there were some great scores on the day.
In B Flight in third place with a poor score for him was serial podium placer Les ‘Beach Road’ Hall with 34 points. Second place went to the very dapper Dave Strang with a nice 38 points. But well out in front and still playing great golf was Don ‘the losing captain’ Wilson with a very impressive 41 points.
In A Flight it was all very tight at the top with some really impressive performances. Third place went to our very own punk rocker Phil Cawes with 38 points, second place went to Graham ‘Whitney’ Houston with a fine 40 points, just one shot shy of first time winner with a superb 41 points, Les Easton.
A Flight
1st Les Easton 41pts
2nd Graham Houston 40pts
3rd Phil Cawes 38pts
B Flight
1st Don Wilson 41pts
2nd Dave Strange 38pts
3rd Les Hall 34pts
Wednesday, Nov. 11, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
The long drive to Royal Lakeside is not everybody’s cup of tea; it can be made even longer when you’ve got the ‘me-man’ talking about himself for over an hour and guess who had that honour? I have to say though it was all worth it, as in my opinion this is the best conditioned course that we play.
Well over twenty golfers turned up and as usual the field was split into two flights.
In B Flight third place went to James Savage with a surprisingly low for him 33 points. Second place with a very impressive 37 points was the ‘me-man’ Brian Orr. As this was announced it was clear that I would be having to put my golf shoes back on so he could talk me through his round on the way home. First place with a fine 38 points went to Reg Hog.
In A Fight a magnificent 73 gross by the poshest named man in Pattaya, Mark Teversham-Ham, was more than good enough to take top spot. Second place went to Graham Houston with 38 points, beating yours truly because of a much better back nine.
A Flight
1st Mark Teversham-Hann 40pts
2nd Graham Houston 38pts
3rd Damian Trant 38pts
B Flight
1st Reg Hogg 38pts
2nd Brian Orr 37pts
3rd James Savage 33pts
Friday, Nov. 13, Green Valley – Stableford
A massively reduced field made the weekly trip to our home course of Green Valley, this was because of the Pattaya Sports Club scramble. Only thirteen golfers bothered to turn out with the same usual faces picking up the prizes.
In third place was the man with the best left handed swing in the Caddyshack, James Savage with 35 points. James’ golf lessons are really starting to pay dividends now and no matter how much he is being cut he is still putting in the performances. This was Jim’s fourth podium finish in his last four outings and he has got everybody thinking that maybe golf lessons do work.
Second spot today went to Clive Bruce who recovered from a very slow start, including a missed putt of less than a foot, to play to his handicap with 36 points. Two points better and winning the day was Les Hall with a fine 38 points.
1st Les Hall 38pts
2nd Clive Bruce 36pts
3rd James Savage 35pts

Pranee takes the plaudits

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Nov. 9, Green Valley – Stableford
The high season is warming up and there were eleven groups out today, and with our policy of no holiday makers, unless you have played with us before, this could still prove an awkward situation in the coming weeks.
We had seven ladies out with us today and with three of our regulars not playing and two single figure handicappers arriving next week, it looks like an independent ladies competition will start next week.
In the stableford competition, Georges Faber took out the A Flight with 38 points ahead of Peter Pedder (36) and Bill Hewitt (35) in second and third respectively.
Martin Holland was top of the pile in B Flight with 39 points while Jim Connelly took second on a count back over Neville Scurell, both on 38.
In the C Flight Yves Bosset scored a 1 under 37 points for first place, beating Ken Foster on countback. Miss Nang picke up third place just 2 shots adrift on 35.
In the ‘2’s competition there was a rollover from Pattana, Emerald and Khao Kheow and Pranom Foster was smiling all the way to the bank as she birdied the 16th to get the only ‘2’ of the day in the first division. Jimmy Johnson also got a ‘2’ on the second hole to win the second division with only one rollover.
Near pins went to Mikael Andersson, Georges Faber, Paul Smith, Bob Verporte, Pranom Foster, Jimmy Johnson, Martin Holland and Barry Rawlinson.
Wednesday, Nov. 11, The Emerald – Stableford
A slightly reduced field from Monday and on a quiet course we teed-off 25 minutes earlier than our normal 10 a.m. slot.
Living in France for the last seven years, and playing with us twice a year for the past 4, Pranee Bosset shot her best ever round off her 16-handicap to win the A Flight with 43 points. Raivo Velsberg came in second with 37 points and Bryan Rought was third just one point behind.
Tom Novak’s 36 points took B Flight honours, while Josie Monks, playing her best ever round, came in second with 34 points after beating her old man on a back six count back of 11/10. She was a happy lady that night.
In the ‘2’s competition, Miss Nom birdied the 13th in division 1 and Gordon Everingham the 7th in division 2 to take the pot.
Near pins went to Pranom Foster, Reijo Hainnen, Arvo Hiller (2), Marty Aronson, Fred Duffy, Gordon Everingham and Ken Foster.
Friday, Nov. 13, Eastern Star – Stableford
The sanded greens have disappeared and the condition of this course improves every week, but the cost of the green fee has still not been verified for us by the management for the high season, so there were minimal bookings throughout the week.
It was a very hot day out on the course but Neville Scurrell came in with a fine 40 points to win A Flight. Having the time of her life with her golf game, Pranom Foster was second on 39 points and Martin Holland took third with 37.
Miss Noi’s took her first ever pole position in B Flight with a winning 38 points; Cully Monks was second with 34 after beating Miss Nang on a 19/18 back nine count back. Commiserations go to newly arrived Jim Connelly after scoring 17 and losing out.
Butch Porter got a ‘2’ on the 6th to win the second division and there are now 4 rollovers in the ‘2’s in division 1.
Near pins went to Arthur Hancock, Martin Holland, Neville Scurrell, Miss Noi and Miss Tar.

Two jewels: Emerald shining & the poor relation

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, Nov. 10, The Emerald – Stableford
Tuesday saw the group travelling down to Ban Chang, to play the jewel of the south, The Emerald, where we were to find the course had all but dried out, the greens were grassy & smooth, and the fairways back to some run again.
Despite not having much length to protect it (off the white tees), with the various up, down and side hill lies, a challenge is always assured. Today however I think the golfers got the better of the course for the most part: Bob Edwards (9), visiting from the USA, rolled in a nice birdie on the last to record a strong 40 points, edging Jeff (8) in to second, while Keith Hudson (20) playing his first game back in Thailand this time, managed a creditable 36 points, for third.
Near pins were picked up by Keith, Nobby, Jonathan & Jeff, but no 2 conversions, maybe even a couple of 3 stab bogeys, bummer.
Thursday, Nov. 12, Century Chonburi - Stableford
Thursday rolled around and a small group travelled north to Century Chonburi, to see how the course was, as we had not been here for a while as we had been enjoying voucher & Sport Day golf through the Low Season. The facilities were the same as they have been for a long time now, but hey, you can have a shower anytime!
The golf course was also still the same, a diamond in the rough, although not manicured to the same extent as most other courses in the area, it is great value; fairways are well maintained (a little bit dry) and the greens always provide a test, especially if above the hole.
With the small field, only 1 placing was available, this went to Jeff W (8) who is returning to some form and looking forward to a handicap adjustment, which is assured after his 39 points.
The technical prizes went to Bob, Jeff, Dave & Nobby.
The main reason for our short numbers Thursday was the involvement of 10 players in the PSC Monthly tournament to be held at Emerald, great support on a per capita basis.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation.
For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Thursday fast becoming a ladies day

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Saturday’s winners: Geoff Beckett, Brad Sproxton, Mike Sanders and Rod Crosswell with birthday girl Ann, a staff member at the Travellers Rest.

Barry Hooper
It is becoming quite apparent that Thursdays is becoming a ladies day. For the last three Thursdays at Phoenix the ladies have picked up the first place in the second division. First it was the turn of Amphan North and now it belongs to Paula Byrne who has won it for two weeks in a row; last week with thirty-eight points and this week with forty-one. This has resulted in a handicap cut of two shots down to twenty-four.
It will be interesting to see how Paula fairs next week, but it beggars the question as to what the lads are up too. Granted Geoff Beckett was second but four back and this off his current handicap of twenty-eight. This latest result has seen his handicap being adjusted to twenty seven.
Another player who truly deserves a mention this week is Roger Wilkinson with a great forty-one pointer and second division win at Eastern Star on Monday. He has also been cut two on his handicap but it did not seem to have slowed him up that much he took a third spot on Saturday at Greenwood.
Monday, Nov. 9, Eastern Star - Stableford
Div.1
1st Ito Akitoshi (7) 37pts
2nd Andrew Mellett (5) 36pts
3rd Ian Bell (6) 36pts
Div.2
1st Roger Wilkinson (16) 41pts
2nd Alan Evans (23) 40pts
3rd Eddie Townsend (15) 35pts
The first outing of the week was to Eastern Star on Monday and we had very good numbers taking part so two full divisions.
Division one went to Ito Akitoshi with thirty-seven points, just the one up on Andrew Mellett at thirty-six (a new name to me) who beat Ian Bell on count-back.
Second Division truly belonged to Roger Wilkinson with a great forty-one points and the highest on the day, although Alan Evans was on his shirt-tail with forty points in second spot and Eddie Townsend found himself a full five back on these two for his third spot.
Three ‘2’s came from Mike Sanders, Jimmy Chawke and Roger Wilkinson.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, Khao Kheow A & B - Stableford
Div.1
1st Mike Sanders (9) 40pts
2nd Andrew Mellett (5) 34pts
3rd Mike Rushant (12) 32pts
Div.2
1st Neil Low (20) 32pts
2nd Amphan North (14) 32pts
3rd Neil Allison (17) 29pts
Tuesday saw us visit Khao Kheow A & B with great participation and two full divisions.
The second division found Neil Low at top spot with thirty two points, having played a better back nine by one than Amphan North and winning on count-back. In third was Neil Allison at twenty-nine. Divison One had Mike Sanders heading it with a good forty pointer, Andrew Mellett (that name again?) found himself a full six back at thirty-four for second and two further back in third was Mike Rushant.
Three ‘2’s came from Steve Carlton and Andrew Mellett (x2).
Thursday, Nov. 12, Phoenix (Lakes & Ocean) - Stableford
Div.1
1st Andrew Mellett (5) 39pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (10) 37pts
3rd Mike Rushant (12) 35pts
Div.2
1st Paula Byrne (26) 41pts
2nd Geoff Beckett (28) 37pts
3rd Neil Allison (18) 36pts
Thursday and yet another visit to our regular venue of Phoenix. Lakes and Ocean and a very good turnout yet again and so two full divisions. And Guess what? It was that lady again Paula Byrne that took top honours making it two weeks in a row, this time with forty-one points. Geoff Beckett was left in her wake back at thirty-seven and Neil Allison third at thirty-six.
Division 1 found Andrew Mellett (yes that name again) at the top with thirty-nine followed home by Fergus at thirty seven, resulting in him getting the one shot that he had acquired earlier in the week on his handicap and putting him back in single figures at nine. Mike Rushant was third with thirty-five.
Three ‘2’s were recorded by Mike Rushant, Danny Whelan and David Gibson.
Saturday, Nov.14, Greenwood C & A - Stableford
Div.1
1st Mike Sanders (8) 38pts
2nd Brad Sproxton (12) 37pts
3rd Rod Crosswell (13) 35pts
Div.2
1st Geoff Beckett (27) 34pts
2nd Brad Dippie (21) 33pts
3rd Roger Wilkinson (14) 31pts
On Saturday we had to make a last minute change of venue to Greenwood after our previously booked course (I will not be naming them as I do not wish to give them any publicity) decided to advise us just the one day before playing that the price was being put up by 200 baht. Needless to say the booking was immediately cancelled. We wish to offer sincere gratitude to Greenwood for fitting us in at such very short notice.
It was yet another great turnout and many old faces returning from the winter weather in their home countries, one of these being Eamonn Murtagh who did not have the best of days as he was still suffering from jetlag I suspect. But where was Nijole?
Mike Sanders was top in the first division with thirty-eight points and just one back at thirty-seven was Brad Sproxton. Third place went to Rod Crosswell with thirty-five.
In Division 2 the day belonged to Geoff Beckett with his thirty-four pointer. Just the one back was Brad Dippie at thirty-three and Roger Wilkinson was third at thirty-one.
Five ‘2’s came from Tewin Lamthong, Bill Shepley and Brad Sproxton at the third, Mike Sanders at the eleventh, and Bob St. Aubin at the fifteenth.
Note: If you want any further information about the golf outings played by the TRGG please contact Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or call in to the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro.

Kaneta wins at a canter

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, Nov. 9, Bangpra – Medal
A good turnout for Bangpra saw ‘Mashi San’ win the A Flight with the best round of the day, a one under par net 71. William beat Gordon Melia on a count back to take the runner up spot, both finishing two over on net 74.
In the B Flight Jack Gayer made a winning return to Thailand, beating Bernie Stevens by a shot and Mike Corner finished third a couple of shots behind.
A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (10) net 71
2nd William Macey (15) net 74
3rd Gordon Melia (15) net 74
B Flight
1st Jack Gayer (19) net 74
2nd Bernie Stevens (18) net 75
3rd Mike Corner (17) net 77
Near Pins: Roger Privett, Reg Smart and Tony Oakes (2)
Wednesday, Nov. 11, Pattana - Stableford
After some confusion and negotiation over the green fee on arrival (but eventually resolved) we were ready to tee off! (Note: non PSC members or members without their cards will be financially penalized with a much more expensive green fee, as one unlucky player discovered!)

Double winner Mashi Kaneta.

We played A & B nines and the greens on the A course were in poor condition and very slow but were much better on the B course.
Another good turn out for Pattana and ‘Mashi San’ was on form again, scoring 40 points to win the A Flight at a canter. A count back was needed to separate Geoff Parker and JJ Harney, Geoff having the better back nine to claim the runner up spot.
Eddy Kelly scored even more points than Mashi to win the B Flight by a massive eight points ahead of Reg Smart and a very surprised Ken Young took the third place.
A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (10) 40pts
2nd Geoff Parker (15) 37pts
3rd JJ Harney (11) 37pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Kelly (17) 41pts
2nd Reg Smart (25) 33pts
3rd Ken Young (28) 29pts
Near Pins: Mashi, JJ, Geoff Parker and Tony Scambler.
Friday, Nov. 13, Eastern Star - Medal
We haven’t visited Eastern Star for some time because of the poor condition of the course but we found it to be much improved with the fairways especially in great condition. Some of the Bunker Boy’s were supporting the PSC Monthly competition so we had a single flight today.
Playing a Medal round there was a count back to decide the winner, both Paul Smith and Gerry Cooney had a level par round with Paul nicking it on the count back and Gordon Melia coming in third just one shot behind.
On her last game before returning to the UK, Marion Melia won two near pin prizes making a nice farewell present; the other two went to Frank Dante and Paul Smith.
1st Paul Smith (4) net 72
2nd Gerry Cooney (12) net 72
3rd Gordon Melia (15) net 73

Alan Griffith’s lifetime best

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Nov. 9, Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Yukio Kikuchi 37pts
2nd Geoff Picken 35pts
3rd Rodney Nabbe 34pts
4th Rod Howett 33pts
5th Toni Nichols 32pts
6th Roar Berger 31pts
Returning to Khao Kheow following the renegotiation of the compulsory cart policy, the course was found to be in top class condition with the fairways slightly widened and the rough cut down to a manageable four inches or so; errant shots were penalized but not to the extent that the course was unplayable for the higher handicappers.
This was born out with the top spot being taken by Yukio Kikuchi who would normally have been playing in the second division if there had been one more golfer in the start list to get to the necessary number to make two divisions. Yukio’s one under handicap round proved to be sufficient to take the day’s top spot by the slimmest of margins from Geoff Picken in second place as the latter shows some promise that he may be returning to the old style. Rodney Nabbe took third, another shot behind and one shot ahead of Rod Howett as Rod continues to improve his golf after a while in the doldrums. Toni Nichols found her way onto the list of mentions for the first time with a steady but unspectacular round ahead of Roar Berger by a single stroke.
Rod Howett slipped in the only 2 in the second division and Yasuo Suzuki and Rodney Nabbe shared the first division pool.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members Marianne and Frithjof Kayser and also welcomed back Richard Dobson.
Wednesday, Nov. 11, Bangpra - Stableford
1st B.J. Smith 33pts
2nd Rod Crosswell 33pts
3rd George Oakley 30pts
With over forty of the regulars out with the Baan Jing Jai Scramble event is was a small group that traveled to the recently improved Bangpra where the greens were found to be approaching their old ferocity and anything left above the pin was a nightmare downhill putt.
The longer layout also adds another dimension to what has always been a first class course and with the newly refurbished clubhouse to welcome the golfer after the game it is a pleasure to play the venue.
B.J. Smith took full advantage of the reduced field to take his first win of the year out of Soi 13, but had to be better on the count back, which he was, scoring 17 to 16 against Rod Crosswell who seems to save all his best rounds for his appearances at The Haven.
George Oakley at last slid on to the podium, having spent a small fortune on practice range balls, he at last got some of his shots to go in roughly the right direction although the short stick still needs a fair bit of polishing as he was heard to comment later in the bar.
There were no 2’s in the second division and Rod Crosswell had the only one in the first division.
Friday, Nov. 13, Rayong C.C. – Stableford
Div.1
1st Alan Griffiths 43pts
2nd Ted Lodge 40pts
3rd Frank McGowan 38pts
Div.2
1st Rod Howett 38pts
2nd Toni Nichols 37pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka 36pts
Another large group of golfers required the formation of two divisions as the magic number of thirty players was passed by a fair margin. Fortunately the course was not heavily populated with other golfers, so even with the large numbers teeing off, everyone was away in good time and a good pace was maintained throughout the round which was in stark contrast to a lot of the players experience in a previous outing earlier in the week.
The course, having been renamed from Great Lakes, has also been worked on with both the fairways and greens in a lot better shape than the old management achieved, but still a fair amount of work has to be done to get it into the condition that the designer, Sir Nicholas Faldo, intended but the general layout is as good as anything else that he designed in the area.
The first division was overwhelmed with great scores with Alan Griffiths at the top of the list with his career best score of gross 79, which netted out to seven under his current handicap as he finished three ahead of Ted Lodge, who might have been forgiven for thinking it was in the bag at four under handicap. But such was the quality of the golf from the first division that even players at two under did not guarantee a place, as Frank McGowan took third place by a better count back of 14 to 13 on the back six against Bob Heath after they had tied the back nine on 19. That left Peter Skinner holding an empty bag as he could only muster 18 over the inward half.
Rod Howett took another win in the second division to add to his Monthly Medal in October and his placing earlier in the week and underlined his recent improvement as he headed Toni Nichols, also taking a second placing in the week, by a single shot. Shuichi Kodaka rounded out the second division with a solid even handicap round.
Considering the scoring in the first division it was surprising that there were no 2’s from that group but Sid Ottaway and Rod Howett proved that they were possible by getting one each in the second division.
Back at The Haven, The Doc welcomed new member Tony Vaughan and also welcomed back Stephen Lewis, Charlie Lapsey, Ted Lodge and Frank McGowan before presenting the prizes.

Benda scores back to back victories

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

We had a nice turnout for this US Veterans Day, November 11, at the Pattaya Country Club. The course is in pretty good shape with the staff working hard to keep up with the growth attributable to the continuing rains. The worms don’t help much either. Almost all the greens were in good shape with the exception of the 18th that still has traces of the sanding.

Winner Bob Benda (left) with runner up Herbie Ishinaga.

Back at Caddy Shack II there was many a story of missed birdies and errant putts. One unnamed golfer had a two foot putt and ‘accidentally’ hit the ball while preparing to putt. His request for a “retry” was quickly dismissed. Tough luck!
No stranger to coming in first was Bob Benda with a respectful 40 points, followed home by the PSC President, Herbie Ishinaga with 37 points. Our semi-annual US visitor R. Kevin Worl missed two critical birdie putts to come in behind Herbie with 36 points.
Later, Herbie furnished us with some delicious roast beef sandwich slices along with fat hot dogs. San Miguel lite seemed to be the beverage of choice for participants.

Rosco at the double

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s column
Monday, Nov. 9, Burapha - Stableford
Thirty-one Outbackers went to play C & D at Burapha today and the Capt’ was in a good mood, so it was off the whites for a change. Even though the markers were forward there were only a few scores that were better than handicap as the greens were still lightening fast after the pro tournament here last week, and some of the pin placements were very difficult to get at. Nevertheless a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Two frequent visitors & friends: John & Lyn Foote with Friday’s Div B winner, the Sugarman.

Top score of the day came from Rosco, with an excellent 41 points to win Div B; 39 points won Div A, and that came from Paul Greenaway whereas Div C was won by Bruce McAdam with a handicap equalling 36.
Other notable scores came from Dave Boran (38pts), Dion lane (37pts), Murray Hart (38pts) & Richard Garland (37pts) each second and third in their respective divisions.
There were a record number of ‘2’s, a total of ten and they came from: Bob Philp, Paul Greenaway, Dave Boran, Jim Bryan, Bruce McAdam, Murray Hart, Dion Lane, Kevin Moraghan, and Richard Garland had two.
Div A (0-12)
1st Paul Greenaway (11) 39pts
2nd Dave Boran (11) 38pts
3rd Dion Lane (9) 37pts
Div B (13-17)
1st Rosco Langoulant (13) 41pts
2nd Murray Hart (15) 38pts
3rd Richard Garland (14) 37pts
Div C (18+)
1st Bruce McAdam (22) 36pts
2nd John Spiller (23) 32pts
3rd Paul Quinn (18) 29pts
Tuesday, Nov. 10, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Another fine day for golf as 20 Outbackers made the short trip to the ever welcoming Pattaya Country Club. In addition to the regulars there were three tourists staying in Pattaya, Bill, Mike and Graham who are often seen with the Outback during their frequent visits to Thailand and took advantage of the their bus (the Outback’s) to collect and return them to their hotel.
We arrived to find our organiser of the day – Barry Chadbourn - wearing a new ‘bonnet’ knitted for him by his regular caddy, Warn – much to the amusement of both players and caddies alike. In addition our players included two caddies from Pattaya Country Club – Noy and La’ong.
With 20 players it was two divisions plus ‘2’s.
Playing to his 9 handicap and achieving 36 points in Division ‘A’ (0-18) was Aussie, Chris Fletcher, while second place went to David Day (16) with 35 pts and third was the ‘caddies friend’ Ian Covill (14) with 34.
In Division ‘B’ (19+), the winner again this week with a great 41 points was that ‘man about town’ Alan Pearce (21), second was today’s reporter, Nigel Cannon (23) with 37 points and it was ‘stunnings’, Suzi Lawton (19) in third place with 36 points.
The presentation took place at the Outback Bar one hour after the last group came in from the course, where we were welcomed by Capt’ Bob and General Jack and the new four legged member of staff, ‘Lucky’ who arrived unannounced some 4 weeks ago and is already a firm favourite with the staff and regular customers.
There were three ‘2’s from Sean Johnston, Alan Pearce & David Day.
The Outback play at Pattaya Country Club every Tuesday with a 09.30 tee-time.
Div A (0-18)
1st Chris Fletcher (9) 36pts
2nd David Day (16) 35pts
3rd Ian Covill (14) 34pts
Div B (19+)
1st Alan Pearce (21) 41pts
2nd Nigel Cannon (23) 37pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (19) 36pts
Wednesday, Nov. 11, Rayong C.C. – Stableford
This was the first of the scheduled twice monthly ‘high season’ visits to the local Rayong Country Club, that attracted 22 Outbackers to make the short journey from the bar, down the 36, turning left at the lights. Capt’ Bob prefers the another way, travelling up the 331 past Pattaya Country Club to the first set of lights and then turning right; it may be a bit quicker but the road is poor in places.
Being the only group there today it was a warm greeting from club staff and caddies; and by taking advantage of the advance purchase coupons available in books of ten, it (the course) offers really great value for money which the Outback will continue to support for the time being.
The course was in good condition with the greens a little slow but true and continuing to improve; the weather was good and the rain just about stayed away, although rumblings of thunder could be heard somewhere off in the distance.
Welcome back to John & Lyn Foote and also to Dave Ford having his first round with the Outback.
So to the golf and Rosco followed up his win on Monday with another good round today, amassing the top score of the day (37pts) to win Div A by one from Capt’ Bob, who in turn was two ahead of the in form, Bob Lindborg. Three players were tied on 36 points in Div B, headed eventually using the usual count back methods by Orawan Sodok from Ed Delaney & Nigel Cannon, who has played three times this week, scoring 37, 37 & 36 points. Not bad Nigel for a youngster!
There were just two ‘2’s from Dave Ford & Capt’ Bob.
Div A (0-18)
1st Rosco Langoulant (13) 37pts
2nd Bob Philp (7) 36pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (16) 34pts
Div B (19+)
1st Orowan Sodok (27) 36pts
2nd Eddie Delaney (32) 36pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (23) 36pts
Friday, Nov. 13, Greenwood - Stableford
Thirty-five Outbackers travelled up the 331 to Greenwood today for a trip that hasn’t happened for a long time; probably since it’s a well known fact that Capt’ Bob is not a great lover of this Peter Thompson course.
Nevertheless, it was in tremendous condition and the greens were commented on by all as being the best anywhere around, at the moment. We played C (which is a tough start for any golfer) followed by B, and the scores remained generally on the low side.
One of the things that can go wrong, particularly at Greenwood, as in ‘finish the front nine, then have to wait for other groups to tee off before you start your back nine’ didn’t happen today; the only complaint is the ‘one buggy one golfer’ policy. They will have to address that problem before too long, as the feedback from the guys who need to take carts was, “I don’t have to drive this far and pay this money for a cart, I can play other courses as good but a lot closer to home.” Up to you Greenwood!
Div A was won by Mike Holmes with 36 points off 12; second went to Chris Davisson (13) with 35 and third went to Capt’ Bob, of all people, with 33 points, on a course he doesn’t like!
Div B was won by the Sugarman with a fairly average 34 points from fellow Aussie, Rob Earle, on 33 points, and unbelievably, Bob Lindborg’s 30 points got him third. Div C struggled to score well; with Brian Maddox, just back from home but now here for good, taking the honours with just 32 points followed in by Peter Gibson with the same score; back in third was another Aussie visitor, Rob’s mate, Tom Bell.
Well done chaps nobody takes this place apart it seems; but despite the aforementioned comments and by popular demand, the Outback will be back, especially because of our discounted green fee rate!
The ‘2’s today, of which there were three, came from Ray Gibson, Barry McIntosh and Bob Philp (which at first was thought to have been a hole in one).
Div A (0-13)
1st Mike Holmes (12) 36pts
2nd Chris Davisson (13) 35pts
3rd Bob Philp (7) 33pts
Div B (14-19)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (19) 34pts
2nd Rob Earl (19) 33pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (16) 30pts
Div C (20+)
1st Brian Maddox (21) 32pts
2nd Peter Gibson (26) 32pts
3rd Tom Bell (21) 31pts
Note: If you played this course, the Outback would like you to comment on our forum, outbackchat – topic, “course reviews”, which can be found on our website, www.outbackgolfbar.com. This would help others as to the current condition of the courses in the area. For example: value for money (green fee & cart etc), pace of play, condition of the fairways, condition of the greens, caddies, and drink stops & restaurant. Even if you played a different course, please send in your review for all to read. The more the merrier.

‘Shier’ class, you can’t teach that

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Monday, Nov. 9, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Dale Shier (14) 41pts
2nd John Emerson (10) 38pts
3rd Mick Beresford (25) 38pts
A blisteringly hot day greeted today’s players and for many it proved too much. There were some very weary individuals plodding around the course, particularly some of those back from an over-indulgent weekend in Bangkok. Vast quantities of water were required just to get around.
However, these were the guys who actually made it. Again, through illness in some cases and just plain no-show, we had to rearrange groups. This, after having to turn people away because we were full, is particularly maddening. Furthermore guys if you do add your name to the reserve list it’s no good without a contact number! Wouldn’t it be nice, just for one week, to be able to write a report without a rant in it?
To add to our usual mix of Yanks and Brits we welcomed a group of Finns to the Golf Club today. It’s always good to see new blood playing with us. All young lads too, significantly bringing the average age down to around 68 and bringing smiles to the faces of the girls in the club house. Not much to write about their scores though I’m afraid.
In fact, there was not much to write about with any of the scores today, apart from the 3 winners. No real stories came back to me of how great so-and-so should have scored or tales of a fabulous outward or inward nine, only to lose it by some cruel twist of fate. Only Roger Koehler, of the rest, threatened to make his handicap with his 35. Keith Warboys was disappointed that, yet again, his 30 points didn’t make the places! Message from John Emmerson mate; ‘keep trying Keith, maybe if you up the bet you’ll do it’. But not if you fall in the trap and give him putts from 10 feet!
Speaking of John ‘expletive’ Emmerson, he was one of the few success stories today. He and Mick Beresford both carded 38’s in a battle for second and third with John’s 18 nicking it by one. Great to see Mick in the frame, he has really only started playing golf this year and is keen as mustard, even with a hectic work schedule. He always plays with a smile on his face and is a delight to play with. Many of us would do well to take that lesson from him.
Falling into those same categories as Mick is today’s winner Dale Shier. I have commented before on the immaculate way Dale is always turned out, epitomizing the cliché, ‘all the gear, no idea!’ He is, of course, a fine golfer, an ex low handicapper before that horrible thing called work got in the way. A man of a thousand quips, today he let his golf do the talking (we can but hope) with a top class 41 points. As he himself would say ‘you won’t find that in any books’.

Roddis on the rampage at Rayong C.C.

PSC Soi Khao Noi Golf Group

Tuesday, Nov. 10, Rayong C.C. (White Tees) - Stableford.
Eighteen players turned up to sample Rayong Country Club, most of them for the first time. Our resident ‘chaplain’, Father Derek Tree gave a blessing to all before proceedings began and it was assumed he would have a good round with divine help, but alas he didn’t, accumulating only 21 points.
The course is well laid out and is a great come-back to the Pattaya golf scene, being competitively priced, especially during the current high season. It’s a little rough around the edges perhaps but we are advised that the course improves continually. We enjoyed the venue and SKGG will be back on a regular basis.
John Roddis (13) amassed a total of 41 points to win the ‘A’ division, with Bob Drumm (12) second on 34 points followed by Mick Benton (17) third on 33 points after beating Mike Jackson on count back.
In the ‘B’ Division (18 and above) visitor Denis Palmer achieved 36 points for top spot, in second was Curt Svelyn with 32 and third place went to ex postman Paul Healy on 31.
Bev Ewens won 2 technical prizes with the other three being evenly distributed.
Afterwards most golfers repaired to ‘La Piscinne’ for a couple of hours of fine cuisine, drinks and jolly banter with the exception of Father Derek who came out of Rayong C.C., turned left instead of right and ended up at the oil refinery, taking 2 hours to return to La Piscine, so no help from above in matters of navigation either eh.
Plutaluang Navy East & West – Thursday 12th
November – White Tees - Stableford.
Fifteen of us attended Plutaluang with pre-booked tee times starting at 10.00 hours only to be abruptly told that our tee time had been set back to 11.30 due to a local tournament! After some haggling we finally teed off at 10.45.
Only one division today and the winner was David Johnson (24) scoring 24 points on the East but having some problems on the West, scoring just 12 for a total of 36. In second place was Cliff Saveall (9) on 33 points and in third, fourth and fifth respectively came Rob Gandley (19), Ian Wheeldon (10) and Ian John Somerville Campbell (21), who overhauled Alan Freeman (26) on count back.
Father Derek achieved the longest putt, and Bob Drumm, Rob Gandley and Ray Bridgeman won near pin dividends.
It was generally agreed that the course was as good as we have seen it, the fairways were lush and the greens slow but true. Good value for money we reckon and therefore a pity that 4 of our popular regulars shun the venue for reasons best known to themselves.
Apologies for not having a winners photograph this week but our cameraman and Aka O’Reilly have gone up country to view their girlfriends’ lubber prantations.
Note: Any golfers seeking to play with our group that wish to know about the group’s format please phone Neil on 089 511 0575.

Belgian bucks again

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Rayong C.C. - aka Great Lake C.C. - on Sunday, November 8 to play a stableford event on this improving track. The greens are getting better by the week and although more work needs to be done on the fairways the course is on track to be a fine challenge within a month or two. The bunkers, all 120 of them, are fine however.

Rabbi (left) presents Paul McNally with the Champion’s Trophy.

The largest weekend field for a few months enabled two flights to be played, divided at sixteen and under and play got underway on time on the unusually crowded course.
In the top flight Alan Bridges and Tony Thorne shared third place with 35 points each whilst Murray Hart went one better to score level par for second. The flight winner was Richard “Banjo” Bannister who got his “mojo” working for the first time this trip to produce a 37 point card.
The second flight produced no real surprises with Fredy Braun and Jean Morel sharing second place with 38 points each and the Belgian golfer Emiel Van de Wiele turning in his fourth consecutive sub par round for the win with 39 points. He has now come down three shots in the CONGU lists in the last two weeks, truly a man in form.
Five players shared the six birdie ‘2’s; namely Chris Voller, Alan Bridges, Banjo, Tony Thorne and Marc Jensen (two) whilst the Booby Bevy went to Masanori Takano at last after his recent excellent form nosedived leaving him on twenty-seven points.
Weekend golf certainly has a more relaxed feel to it and everyone enjoyed the experience at Rayong CC with the PGS.
PGS Annual
Championship
The Pattaya Golf Society held its eagerly awaited Annual Individual Championship at Green Valley on Tuesday and Thursday, November 10 & 12 with the format strictly 36 holes strokeplay, proper golf with no frills or “technicals”. The course was well setup but eyes blinked on the first day as ground staff were seen lightly sanding the greens and this made them very slick for a few hours.
A quality field had assembled with an average handicap of fourteen and last year’s Champion Dave Stockman found he had Paul McNally in his sights this year as well as Chris Voller and veteran “Bunker Boys” Paul Butler and Harry Riley, both winners in their own rights.
The first day held no surprises as Dave Stockman and Paul McNally both played to their handicaps with gross scores of 76 and 75 respectively with Richard Bannister - Banjo - carding the day’s best net score of 69. Easing himself into the frame was Chris Voller, also with a trouble free gross 78.
The second day was set with a final grouping of the main contenders and it would be interesting to see if the tough got going when the going got tough. At the turn on the final day Dave Stockman had taken a one shot lead on the day to level the gross scores and Chris’s front nine of 40 was destined for the history books.
But golf is a complex game and the gods are constantly looking for weakness to punish. Chris drew on all his experience and a pulsating birdie on the twelfth followed by Dave’s uncharacteristic quadruple-bogey horror on thirteenth opened the trio up. Two more birdies for Voller in an excellent back nine of 33 “off the sticks” and the title was wide open.
Finishing the day with 73, both Macca and Voller had set out their stalls and Dave Stockman was relegated to third place with 76. The day’s best net performance had been Chris’s 67 and he had forced himself into second place in the main event. However, Paul McNally’s consistent gross of only four over at 148 was destined to be unassailable.
It had been a very exciting championship and one in which the three main contestants could be rightly proud of their performances. For Chris Voller to produce his best round of the year in such testing circumstances is nothing short of amazing.
The presentation was held back at Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao and the cool beers were a perfect way to end the PGS Annual Championship for another year. Organiser Mr Len was full of praise for the golfers and the generosity of Harry Riley and Dale Shier for the donation of the perpetual trophy, this year contested for the eighth time, as well as the generosity of Hi-Tech for the award of additional prizes for the winners.
Gross Champion: Paul McNally (148)
Runner-up: Chris Voller (151)
Net Champion: Chris Voller (139)
Runner-up Paul McNally (140)

Matt Doyle stays a step ahead of the handicappers

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, Nov. 8, Rayong C.C. – Stableford
A Flight
1st Mike Holmes (13) 42pts
2nd Paul West (11) 38pts
3rd Geoff Ives (13) 34pts
B Flight
1st Matt Doyle (16) 43pts
2nd Colm Mullen (16) 40pts
3rd Harvey Samuel (19) 39pts
Red Flight
1st Jum Karagit (21) 40pts
Near Pins: No 5 Harvey Samuel, No 7 James Daniel, No12 Mike Holmes, No16 Joe Tynan.

Matt Doyle.

A large Lewiinski’s contingent made their way to the Rayong Country Club, as our usual Sunday tee time was not available at Green Valley due to a 2-day Thai comp. This course continues to improve, and provides a fair test of golf at a fair the price.
County Offaly’s Matt Doyle blasted a staggering 43 points, shrugging off a 4-shot cut in the last 2 weeks. This easily gave him the B Flight and man of the match honors. Even more impressive when you consider the score was put together on just seventeen holes.
Colm Mullen’s second place 40 points almost looked a little ordinary. Where do the Irish boys get their handicaps? - certainly not from the “Royal Irish Tote Board” that is renowned to be the strictest in the world. Samuel Harvey was grateful for third spot, a further shot back.
Mike Holmes took the A Flight honour’s with a ripping 42 points. The in form Paul West secured second spot four shots back and third place saw a three-way tie with Geoff Ives beating Irishman Kevin McNetee and ‘The man of leisure’ Mike Shrosbree, all on 34 points.
Seamus Cotter, a Lewiinski’s regular, did not play today as he was feeling a little under the weather. He is as sick as a pig because his name was pulled out for the Lou-inskis free prize draw worth a whopping 12,500 baht.
Monday, Nov. 9, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
1st Matt Doyle (13) 37pts
2nd Kevin McNetee (7) 34pts
3rd Liam McGuiness (10) 33pts
In the space of 24 hours Co. Offaly’s Matt Doyle went from a hard working guy who deserved anything that came his way to a no good, sandbagging @%@#% son of a $%@#$@ etc. God bless Pattaya! The important thing is Matt is playing his socks off. Well he’d better, if he’s going to remain a competitor off his soon to be revised handicap.
Compatriots Kevin McNetee and Liam McGuiness joined Matt in the dough and so completed the Irish rout.
Michael Cosgrave took charge of the junior flight with a respectable 35 points, whilst Jim Elphick got the better of Colm Mullen in the minor places count back.
No twos were reported so a rollover on Wednesday.
Wednesday, Nov. 9, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McNetee (7) 37pts
2nd Ed Wykoff (12) 36pts
3rd Andrew Byrne (15) 35pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Rafferty (19) 40pts
2nd Gary Bird (22) 37pts
3rd Geoff Kubas (20) 35pts
The Irish led from the front yet again as Co. Offaly’s Kevin McNetee took over where Matt left off on Monday. Kevin, playing the A and B nines off a stingy 7 handicap, posted a fine 37 points for the senior flight honors, and so kept the Irish tricolor flying. Ed Wykoff came in second with a steady even par round, leaving Andrew Bird to complete the flight.
Jimmy ‘The ladies man’ Day had a game he would rather forget, carding a miserable 15 points - or perhaps it was a ploy to direct the handicapper’s attention for the flood of Irish winners. Surely not!
Plenty of action in the junior flight as Gerry Rafferty, “I am not sure were he hails from but I could have a good guess” shot a match winning 40 points. Garry Bird floated in 3 shots short for the runner up spot, and the ubiquitous Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas filled the flight.
Back at the ranch, remember poor old Jimmy? He’s not poor anymore as he picked up the Lou-iinski’s free draw, a thousand baht for every point he scored. Jimmy in true Irish tradition rang the bell.
Friday, Nov. 13 - Stableford
A Flight
1st Liam McGuiness (12) 37pts
2nd Peter Hynard (12) 37pts
3rd Justin Fowlis (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Bob Fagan (20) 38pts
2nd Sim Davis (29) 38pts
3rd jerry Rafferty (19) 38pts
Liam McGuiness, would you believe from “Co. Offaly’s can’t stop winning gang”, finished the week the way his mates started, taking A Flight with a steady 37 points on a count back over Peter ‘The Right Honorable’ Hynard. Justin Fowlis wasted no time getting into the action, posting an even par round for third place. Welcome back Justin.
The junior flight saw a three-way tie on 38 points, with Bob Fagan’s back nine 18 giving him the victory. Sim Davis (whose back side would surely have won any other comp) recorded a 17 for second place and Jerry Rafferty’s 16 wrapped up the flight, and the week’s golf.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Stu Rifkin makes it two in a row

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Peter Blackburn & Dave Richardson
Monday, Nov. 9, Emerald – Stableford
We had 27 starters leaving Café Kronborg at the usual time in very hot & humid conditions and welcomed back were Don Richardson, Jan Lovgren, Patrick Browne & Daryl Evans.

Peter Hammond, The Admiral & Stu Rifkin at the Emerald golf course.

After not playing at Emerald for quite some time, the course was found to be in good condition with most greens being elevated and on the small side. Comment was made that the greens were rather slow on some holes. The green fee of 800 baht was considered fairly expensive compared to most of the other courses that we play.
With the good turnout we had nearest the pins on all par 3’s and rewards for longest putts on the last hole of each nine. A Flight was for handicaps 0 to 19 and B Flight for 20 and over.
The winner of A Flight by 3 points was Peter Hammond with Brian Gabe in second place, 1 point in front of Don Richardson in third. Mike Allidi beat Leif Kirkgaard on a count back for fourth place.
Obviously reveling in my absence my good mate Stu Rifkin just edged out Martyn Topham to take out B Flight. I have it on good authority that Stu has found the secret for keeping his ball in play – it’s called Heineken!! Mike Winfield finished third ahead of Colin Swann who edged out Graham Buckingham on a count back for fourth.
Look out guys ‘cos I’m back next Monday!
A Flight
1st Peter Hammond (19) 39pts
2nd Brian Gabe (19) 36pts
3rd Don Richardson (8) 35pts
4th Mike Allidi (2) 33pts

2nd Martyn Topham (30) 36pts

Thursday, Nov. 12, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Today we had 22 golfers leaving Café Kronborg for the 55 minute journey to the challenging Pleasant Valley course. It was hot, around 36 degrees, and The Admiral estimated the humidity at 95%.
Apparently the new clubhouse is now open and looking good although the top lockers in both locker rooms could only be used by visiting U.S. basketball players as you need a reach of about 9 ft 10 inches to hang anything up in them. The course was looking good with continual improvements being made.
There were two flights as usual, A Flight for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Flight 19 and over.
The hot and humid weather did not seem to affect either flight winners as they both recorded excellent scores of 41 points. Bill Plath won the A Flight from Per Anders Karlsson with Johan Reynisson in third and Elias Magnusson in fourth place.
For the second time this week Stu Rifkin was victorious in B Flight but there is no report on how many Heinekens it took. I’m looking forward to playing a stroke game with Stu at Phoenix next Thursday as I’ll be back to “encourage” him on his new handicap. A long way behind Stu was Ernst Hansen in second place with Kenny Chung third. There was a four way count back for fourth spot with The Admiral himself being victorious from Graham Buckingham, Kurt Sandgaard and Ronnie Ratte.
A Flight
1st Bill Plath (15) 41pts
2nd Per Anders Karlsson (18) 37pts
3rd Johan Reynisson (12) 34pts
4th Elias Magnusson (16) 32pts
B Flight
1st Stu Rifkin (21) 41pts
2nd Ernst Hansen (19) 35pts
3rd Kenny Chung (27) 33pts
4th Dave Richardson (23) 31pts

Bridge in Paradise: by Neil Robinson

Whenever you have four trumps (or you believe your partner has), then the best line of defence is often a forcing one.  You try to find the partnership’s best suit and force declarer to ruff in the hand with the long trumps.  The purpose is to shorten declarer’s trump holding to the same as yours.  Even better if you can reduce declarer’s holding to less than yours — then you are in control of the hand.  The deal below is an example of a forcing defence.  With neither side vulnerable and South dealing, this was the bidding:

South   West      North     East

1S         P              2S            P

3S         P              4S            All pass

The full deal is shown below:

                    S: J98

                    H: QJ7

                    D: KQ7

                    C: 8632

S: 7532                              S: 4

H: 853                               H: K10942

D: A5                                2D: 9843

C: KJ94                             C: A107

                    S: AKQ106

                    H: A6

                    D: J1062

                    C: Q5

Imagine you are sitting West.  From your point of view, defeating the 4S contract does not look good.  So what do you lead?  If you lead a spade, a heart or a diamond, then South will make the contract.  Declarer pulls trumps in four rounds, forces out the ace of diamonds, crosses to dummy and leads the queen of hearts.  Since the king of hearts is on the right side, he makes 10 tricks (five trumps, two heart tricks and three diamond tricks).  The defence takes only the ace of diamonds and two club tricks.  Contract made.
However, you have four trumps, so it is time to try the forcing defence.  Indeed, this is your only hope of defeating the contract.  Your strongest suit is clubs, so you lead the four.  You are fortunate to find your partner with an honour.  He wins the ace and leads back a club.  You win the king and lead the jack.  Declarer ruffs and has to use all his remaining trumps to pull yours.  Now, when you win the ace of diamonds, declarer is helpless.  You lead the nine of clubs and take the setting trick.  Contract defeated.  If this was your planned line of play, congratulations!

New boat, new skipper & lots of fish

PSC November fishing trips

Mike Gerrard
After the last report which consisted of mainly bad news about fishing in this haven for retired gentry, today, Saturday Nov. 7, was like being reborn again. Due to that bad experience before, a lot of time and effort was put in by myself and another dedicated hard worker (who wishes to remain anonymous) to improve the standard of boats and skippers.

A prize catch displayed by some of the PSC fishermen.

Having done this and set up many dates for the future (which was due to start on Sunday, November 8), I had a last minute request from a small group of people to set a trip up for today.
Due to the lateness of the booking I had no alternative but to go back to the original guy and rebook the ‘Marie Celeste’ and Captain Calamity.
This was a different kind of fishing day, due to the fact of the crew who came along, 3 guys and 3 ladies. They carried with them a bundle of religious cladding with the remains of one of the ladies husbands who had died lately. Needless to say they were going to bury him at sea. Never fear, we cater for every need at the PSC.
I think this was the kind of event we needed to change our luck because no sooner had we committed our unpaying traveller to Davy Jones locker than the action started. Well, it started before, but it makes a better story to bend the truth a little.
A fine catch of jacks, queen fish, cobia and a few other smaller species were recorded on the day and the folks went home a littler happier than when they arrived (for obvious reasons).
Home to bed was the order of the day due to the fact that I was taking a crew of our regulars out the next morning at 6.30am.
After the trip the previous day, yours truly was very much out of sorts and nearly decided not to go on the Sunday. However, thinking only of my faithful followers I bore the pains of a bad stomach and tiredness and made ready for the trip to Bangsaray.
Bad news soon reached me that the boat had been moved to Sattahip earlier in the week due to the bad storms and rough seas. (The bay is better protected at Sattahip - that’s why the Thai navy is stationed there).
So, after a little confusion to start the day we all made our way along the pier to our newly chartered boat. (I must try and remember to get a photo of the boat one day).
Although my first mate and I had seen the boat before it was a treat to see the faces of the other guys when they saw it. This is what you call a pleasure fishing boat.
Measuring approx 65 to 70 feet in length there was plenty of room for 8 of us to relax and put lines into the water.
With the tides running fast (and unfortunately out) we could only sit and wait for the reels on the bigger fishing rigs to scream. This did not happen for quite a while and after moving the boat three times we finally found the fish. (If the truth is known it is the fish that find the bait that counts).
Rick Murphy was our champion of the day. Every rod he touched seemed to have some magic to it. Again after recording catches of queen fish, cobia and jacks of the larger variety, we settled down to some drifting along with the tide, coming across shoals of smaller varieties such as snapper, dene fish and pla dang.
With such a nice boat and perfect weather conditions it was little wonder that skipper had to remind us that our time was up and it was time to go and enjoy a beer or two. Well for me it was - my stomach was OK by then.
Our next trip is scheduled for Sunday November 22 but sadly (for any newcomers) is already full. There are also many scheduled trips arranged once a fortnight alternating between Saturday and Sunday through till the end of March.
If you wish to make a private charter any day of the week you can. If I am free I will come along to take care of you.
Visit the PSC website on www.pattayasports.org and click on ‘Fishing’ for all the information you require. Or go to the PSC clubhouse on 3rd Road and check out registration forms there. Failing that just call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 and I will try to help. Tight lines chaps!

Despite the rain, Pattaya softball shines

PSC Sunday Softball

Winners of Game 1 (from left to right): John S., Rick, Mikey,
Scotty, McHugh, Michelle and Perry, Mark, Shawn, Joel.

Diego Wells
It was the best of conditions, and it was the worst of conditions at the diamond in Jomtien on Sunday, November 8. The day started unlike any other softball encounter, with several of the players arriving early to try and spiff up our field of dreams. John CF was the first to arrive, and he spent a few hours manicuring the centerfield grass. Quick to his aid were Rick and Shawn mowing the outfield, while Rocky and McHugh trailed behind raking, and tossing the grass aside. It was a thing of beauty to see so many elderly, and often times, fragile creatures actually putting in a hard day’s work!
With the outfield sufficiently manicured, the call to “Play Ball” was initiated and the 20 softballers got ready to really go to work. Perry’s team batted first, and scored 2 runs off consecutive singles from Joel, Phil, Scotty and Rick. Alan’s team countered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning off doubles from Kevin, Ben, Peter and Diego.

A muddy shot to left field by Peter, as Perry, Rick and Scotty get ready to field the ball.

The game stayed tight (6-5 team Perry) until the third inning, when the dark clouds rolled into town. The ensuing downpour sent John Stockton to the paragliding shelter, while everyone else nestled close to the beer cooler. Special thanks to CF for stocking the eskie, and for all the boys who joined the scribe in some “shotgun specials”. Within the hour, the skies cleared as the ale supply depleted. We went back on that muddy, field of dreams and completed a double header.
Game 1 went from competitive to comedic as Perry’s team mercilessly hammered the ball through holes in the infield. They scored 11 runs over the last four innings to waltz away winners by a score of 17 to 7. Mark Reynolds was named man of the match by “going yard” twice, along with a triple, double and some solid glove work in right center field.
In Game 2, Alan’s team took revenge. Playing one pitch softball rules, his team drew first blood, scoring 6 runs in the first inning. Perry’s boys tried to keep pace by scoring 2 in the first, second and third to level the score. Crucial hits from Brian, Dave, Jeff, Kevin, Andy and Odvar in the fourth inning re-established the six run lead for Alan’s team. They went on to win the match 13-9, and split the double header.
Man of the match was new prospect Jeff, who surprised the opposition with his power to leftfield, and happily, never struck out.
Note: Pattaya softball continues every Sunday rain or shine, at 1 p.m. in Jomtien. For more details see Perry at the Pattaya Sports Club on Third Road or email me (Diego) at igolfwells@gmail .com. See you out on the diamond soon.
