Larry Nicholas

Sept. 13, 1936 - November 5, 2009

Larry Nicholas, owner of Mulligans Bar on Pattaya Soi 13/3, passed away October 5 after suffering a heart attack whilst sitting at his bar.
Born Sept. 13, 1936 at Cappamore near the Slieve Felim Mountains in northeast County Limerick in the midwest of Ireland, Larry moved to London in the 1950’s as a young man, where he worked as labourer. Over time he became a master carpenter, taking on evening jobs after his day work and establishing his own crew.
Eventually the evening work took over the daytime work and he became an independent contractor who was in a position to aid and benefit from the building boom after WWII.
Larry parlayed his business opportunities into a “small empire” of bars and hotels, as he would often refer to his business involvements.
He was a founding member of St. Joseph’s Golf Society, member of West Middlesex Golf Club, held a handicap of 4 at one time, and was once a committee member of the International Pattaya Golf Club (IPGC).
He was also a member of the travelling golf troupe known as the “Dirty Dozen” whose self ascribed task was to seek out good golf courses and good times anywhere in the world. And, they were very good at it.
Larry made his first trip to Thailand in 1997 and like so many before him, moved to Pattaya soon after. He found the kind people and warm weather of Thailand to be very helpful to his overall health and especially for his rheumatoid arthritis, of which he never complained.
Larry was a colourful character who chose a bit of controversy over staid politeness, and who at times found himself on the leading edge of that controversy.
It is fair to say that Larry was mischievous in public but kind and generous in a quiet and private fashion.
His is survived by three sons: Paul, Michael and Barry.
