Royal Cliff damage reaches 14 million baht
Ariyawat Nuamsawat
The Royal Cliff Beach Resort announced that 14.4 million baht in
damage was caused by red shirt protesters during the ASEAN Summit when
they took over and vandalized its Pattaya Exhibition And Convention Hall
(PEACH).
Panga
Vathanakul, managing director of the Royal Cliff Beach Resort in
Pattaya, files a claim for damages resulting from the protest.
Hotel Managing Director Panga Vathanakul said on April 24 that the
hotel’s legal section had gathered all data before filing claims for
damage against the people involved in the violent protest.
Panga said that the incident was “a bad dream.”
This is because the convention hall has continuously accepted
international meetings such as the Skål World Congress when thousands of
tourism promoters from different countries attended; the 46th ICCA
Congress & Exhibition of 2007, and the ASEAN defense meeting, all of
which ended well with the hotel receiving several service awards.
But the red shirt chaos April 9-11 could not have been avoided, she
said.
Property damage from the hotel consisted of the conservatory, crockery,
tables, chairs, the small park, power poles, and the area surrounding
the hotel.
Also there were cancellations of rooms, the restaurant and the
convention hall itself, forcing the hotel to close for renovations.
The damage cost of 14.4 million baht does not include the cost of lost
business which is also being calculated by the legal section.
The hotel so far has not received contact or support from any government
officials.
“We are waiting for contact and would like to ask the media to inform
customers about the problems the hotel must deal with,” she said.
Pattaya City has set up a Pattaya and Chonburi Tourism Rehabilitation
Committee to help local business entrepreneurs deal with the aftermath
of the protest action.
