Lots of Fun at New Auction House
Paul Strachan
The sound of the gavel was thundering just off of Highway 36
recently as 170 lots went under the hammer at the first sale at
Collingbourne Auctioneers.
John Collingbourne is a man who is well known for his skills with a hammer
here in Pattaya, as he has done the honors at many charity auctions over the
years including the Pattaya International Ladies Club Gala Ball and the
Charity Club of Pattaya’s annual dinners.
“Going
once…” John Collingbourne raises the gavel.
What many people don’t know is that John’s ease as an auctioneer comes from
years of experience, as he ran many of his own auction houses back in the
UK.
With the current economic slowdown John’s latest venture here in the Land of
Smiles comes at a perfect time, when people are looking to sell unwanted
items and others who are looking for a bit more for their baht.
John’s gregariousness and charm gives him the perfect qualities to keep the
bidders’ attention and keep things rolling along. Even with over 170 lots on
the first day of business, the mixture of John’s expertise and the bidders’
enthusiasm meant that there was never a dull moment.
On the first day of sale the items ranged from novelty mirrors, guilt framed
mirrors, desks, paintings, jewelry, Buddha statuettes and even a canoe.
Many of you may have attended auctions back in the (your) Old Country and I
am sure you will remember that they are fairly social affairs, with great
repartee between the bidders trying to secure the lot of their choice.
The setup at John’s continues this great tradition and is replete with
snacks such as bacon butties, hot dogs, piping hot tea & coffee and chilled
drinks. All in all making it a very pleasurable way to spend a Saturday
morning.
A word of warning would be to make sure that you register even if you have
little intention of buying. On the day there were many items that literally
went for a song and I was kicking myself for not signing up.
The sales take place at 11 a.m. every Saturday with viewing from 10 a.m.
Going out of Pattaya, the best way is to head onto Highway 36 and then make
the first u turn, Collingbourne Auctioneers is then on the left immediately
after you pass under the railway flyover.

The first auction draws a large crowd.

Officials at the Manufacturing Expo 2009 discussed the best ways to deal with
the current crisis in the automotive industry.
On April 24, Kasem Wattanatham, deputy governor of Chonburi, presided over the
seminar entitled “Capture the opportunity to fight current crisis in the
automobile industry,” convened by Reed Tradex, Industry Support Region 9 and the
Industry Council, held at the Ambassador City Hotel Jomtien with over 200
participants.
“In this current economic crisis we must plan ahead to be least affected by
external factors. This seminar gathers information, opinions, perspectives for
the vehicle parts industry as well as trying to improve financial structure to
achieve the highest benefit,” Kasem said.
Paisit Prapassornsiri, policy planning and analysis officer of Chonburi’s
Industry Office, said that in order to deal with the current crisis in the
agricultural sector, “We must bring B 75 (a type of biodiesel) back into use,
which will turn land to gold by transforming plants into an energy source. This
will bring prosperity to our nation, where we will no longer be concerned about
oil prices controlled by the OPEC.”
Paisit’s speech generated good interest from listeners who sought to gain more
knowledge and to do further research to make the best out of their business.
