Thai teens take on Germany’s rising stars

Mark Beales
Talented Thai teenagers have taken on some of Germany’s rising stars as part of a special football tour.
Assumption College Sriracha in Chonburi sent 17 teenagers on a two-week trip to Frankfurt in Germany.

Assumption’s stars during a trip to Fulda.
They were accompanied by two coaches, including Franz Schwarzwalder, a former goalkeeper in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top league.
The under-17s played several Bundesliga youth teams, and fared well. They beat Karlsruher SC 2-0 thanks to some heroic goalkeeping, then thrashed Borussia Fulda 3-0, in the same stadium where the Thai national team visited last year. They also lost to TSG Hoffenheim 3-0 and played an adult team from TSV Schwanheim, where they snatched a 1-0 victory.
The Assumption team was invited to Germany thanks to the Weinberg School, which has links with the Regents School in Pattaya.
Mr Schwarzwalder, who also teaches German at Assumption, said the trip was a valuable learning experience for the boys. They learned new footballing skills and also were able to see other cultures, he said.
He added: “For most of the players it was their first time in Europe and they were very impressed by the atmosphere and life in Germany. The boys trained in the mornings by the River Main - we lost two balls into the water actually - and had time to go sight-seeing.”
There was little chance of the boys being homesick as Frankfurt has a large Thai community, many of whom came to cheer Assumption on during their games. And if they ever tired of bratwurst the Chiang Mai Restaurant in the University of Frankfurt had plenty of Thai cuisine for them.
The teenagers were taken to see a football museum and the Football Association of Germany took them on a tour to see a factory which is making the new German strip in preparation for the forthcoming European Championships.
The mayor of Frankfurt invited the team to the city’s Coronation Room, where monarchs were crowned 1,000 years ago, and hung a Thai flag from the window of the ancient building in honour of their visit. The boys also got to see some of Germany’s national parks.
Some of Germany’s young stars will be completing the exchange trip by coming to Assumption College Sriracha in October.

Return to the Forbidden Planet rocks the Regent’s Intergalactic Globe

Michael Thomas
The auditorium of the Regent’s School Globe theatre was recently transformed into the interior of an intergalactic space craft for two performances of the classic rock musical Return to the Forbidden Planet. The script, written by Bob Carlton, was based on Shakespeare’s play The Tempest and the 1950’s science fiction B movie The Forbidden Planet and this production really proved it to be a surprisingly effective and ‘toe-tapping’ combination!

Captain Tempest and the crew on the flight deck.
The story centred on Captain Tempest and hi crew being forced to land on the planet D’Illyria where he meets the mad-scientist Doctor Prospero and his assistant the robot Ariel. It does not take too long for our chisel-jawed hero Tempest to fall in love with Prospero’s only daughter, Miranda, much to the frustration of Cookie, a trusty crewmate in the Tempest’s spacecraft Albatross. Meanwhile, all becomes clearer when the Science Officer is revealed as Prospero’s wife Gloria who marooned her husband Prospero on the planet in the first place, in order to obtain his secret formula, the X-Factor which will give the power-mad scientist the ability to rule the universe! Not surprisingly, all ends happily with Tempest safely hitched to Miranda and Prospero suitably consumed by his own monster of the mind!

Doctor Prospero ponders the X-Factor.
The cast was made up of thirty talented students, aged 11-14, from Years 7-9. Ralf Siegrist clearly dominated the stage, giving a particularly confident performance as our hero, Captain Tempest and almost stole the show leading the chorus in the show-stopping, Born to be Wild. He was ably supported by Valerie de Saegher as the devious Science Officer and John Petras as the lovelorn Cookie. Kevin Aamlid contained the authority in the role of the power hungry Doctor Prospero and Apple Maxwell was excellent as Prospero’s hilarious ‘rolling tin-can’ assistant, Ariel whilst Isis Maxwell had the poise and beautiful singing voice necessary for ‘Teenager in Love’, Miranda.

Ariel gives Miranda some advice.
They were supported by a very hard-working crew who danced and sang for all their worth through such timeless rock classics as Great Balls of Fire, Good Vibrations, Shake Rattle and Roll, Mr Spaceman and Monster Mash. The audience had ‘to sing for their supper’ and was very much part of the spaceship in the show and, at one point in the action, ‘the passengers’ brought them through their paces with the Reverse Polarity Drill: always useful in emergencies in outer space! Not surprisingly, at several points in the evening, the audience were up and dancing!
Apart from the hard-working cast, the other stars of the performance were the excellent band led from their position in the balcony by the Regent’s School Head of Music, Giles Mongare, ably assisted by Steve Tomlinson and the other musicians.

Cookie creeps up on Ariel.
Corin James and Head of Art, Nicky Cases also deserve great credit for creating the brilliant set of the interior of the Starship Albatross. Unlike other performances at the Globe, the audience (or should one say, ‘the passengers’?) were led to their seats by the crew by way of the backstage gantry which form many in the audience really gave the sensation of being at Cape Kennedy! The many strikingly effective costumes were designed and made by Kathryn Liggins and the striking choreography was created by Tom Rawlings and the ensemble.
Altogether, this was a breathtaking performance and the students and staff are to be congratulated for their hard work and the parents for their patience. The musical was directed by Mike Thomas ands Martin Walsh.

Gloria, the monster is about to give the crew a nasty surprise!

The Regent’s School Year 13 students recently had their graduation ceremony following the senior prize giving in the Globe Theatre at the Pattaya campus.
The students were about to embark on their International Baccalaureate examinations and were formally fare welled and given best wishes by Mr. Mike Walton, headmaster and a little more informally, by student request, with an entertaining speech from the highly respected Mr. Paul Crouch, director of Round Square.
The event was planned and delivered by the departing head students, Yu-Chieh (Joyce) Lin and Girish Balakrishnan, completed in the evening with a wonderful meal at Rossini in the Royal Cliff Beach Resort.

Ban Jing Jai children treated to day at the theatre

The PILC team, 30 children from Ban Jing Jai Orphanage and 2 staff members prepare to watch the matinee performance of 3 short plays by the Pattaya Players.

Ingrid Cunliffe
Welfare Chair, PILC

On Sunday, May 18, the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) Welfare team invited 30 children from Ban Jing Jai Orphanage and 2 staff members to come and watch the matinee performance of 3 short plays by the Pattaya Players.

Some of the cast visit with the guests.
The children arrived at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, 10th floor functions room with wide eyes and great enthusiasm, dressed in the latest black Jesters promotion t-shirts for the upcoming fair in September.
Once everyone was seated, the fun began and despite the language barrier, with only a handful of the older kids able to grasp English, the kids watched the lights and action with wide eyes!
At intermission the kids were seated in the foyer and enjoyed drinks and snacks provided by PILC funds.
Once seated for the Cinderella performance the kids were again transfixed on the amazing costumes and makeup of the actors, with this play in particular being the favourite by far!
I would like to thank the Pattaya Players group for the warm welcome the children received, with particular thanks to Jacinta.
Also thanks to my co-chair on the Welfare Team, Kathleen, for purchasing the foodstuff for the children and helping on the day.
PILC are proud to be able to provide outings for the children like this and to be able to provide a little bit of variation in the kids’ day.
Credit to the director of Ban Jing Jai, Piangtar, as the children were very well behaved and a pleasure to take out.
We look forward to the next outing.

Regent’s students and staff swim 260kms in 6 hours

Mr Gibney
After a very successful swim challenge in 2006 the Regent’s School organized a similar event to once again challenge the students to swim as far as possible in 6 hours. The event ran from 4pm till 10pm on Friday May 16. The target that had been set was that of the previous event in 2006 where swimmers swam 180km and raised over 100,000 baht for charity.

Mr. Pickles interviews some of the younger swimmers before they enter the water.
It was clear from the start that 2008 was going to be a successful year as every lane had at least 8 swimmers in with the same number again waiting on the side to get in. Some of the school’s stronger swimmers had set themselves tough totals and were determined to stay in the water for the majority of the evening. The event had a great atmosphere. There was music being played to keep the swimmers motivated, drinks, snacks and BBQ food on sale by the student guild. Many parents also turned out to watch and help with length counting.
The swimmers of all ages did a fantastic job and achieved some mind blowing distances. Some of our youngest swimmers (aged 8), Anna Liggens, Hao Tashiro and Bloem Van Dam, all swam 4.5km. Our upper junior swimmers, Tassanee Sanchez (Aged 9), Andy Wang (aged 10) and Min Suk (aged 10) all swam 6km.

Angela, Ivie and Georgie proudly wear the Swim Challenge 08 t-shirts designed and sold by the Student Guild.
In the senior school the distances were even more staggering. Kenneth Chow (aged 12) swam 8.5km, Sierra Sanchez (aged 11) swam 9km. The highest total in the senior school went to our renowned swimmer Winitorn (Tai) Tangwiroon (aged 15) who swam 13.5km in the 6 hour period.
From the teachers it was a mixed bag really. Mr Thomas swimming an excellent 3.5km, Miss Pratt and Mr Crouch swimming 2.5km. This of course made up for the fact Mr Walton could not swim this year due to illness and Mr Tasker just couldn’t swim. Mr Tasker managing only 10 lengths with someone finally throwing in Mr Gibney’s pink rubber ring to help him to make it to the side! Maybe with a bit of coaching from Tai Mr Tasker could get his 1km medal next time.

Apple comes to the end of another length as she clocks up the metres.
The distance swam by all the swimmers as a total smashed the 2006 record of 180km. The final total topped 260km in the 6 hour period. Swimmers are now frantically collecting sponsorship money to try and beat the 2006 total. All monies collected will go towards the Round Square major projects, such as the Koh Phi Phi project and the Hill Tribe project.
Many thanks to the Brown, Robertson and McCoy families for their continued support of the Student Guild and providing delicious barbequed food for everyone.
