4th Annual Misty’s Charity Open - 2006

The “Birdy Boys” - Roy Thornton, Richard Holmes, Barry Traynor and John Emmerson, Champions of the 2006 Misty’s Charity Open

Steve Donovan
A grand field of 120 golfers signed on to enjoy Andy James’ annual fun day of golf, the great aprés-golf feast and party at Misty’s and to answer the call for charity. With proceeds from the tourney and the subsequent raffle and a kick-in of his own, Andy will proudly hand over a check to the Camillian Social Center, The Relief Center for HIV-Aids, in the amount of 100,000 baht.

‘The Classroom Team” of Kevin Moraghan, Rick Sharp, Joe Mooneyham and Dave Porter sets out to do battle
The format on the day was the ever-popular 4-man Scramble (or Texas Scramble, as those outside of Texas call it). It relieves some of the pressure of the daily comps that the avid Pattaya golfer is usually up against, allows the casual golfer a chance to put some swings on the ball to help his team and generally creates a fine aire of camaraderie amongst the teams and the field.
The gang made it around Burapha’s American Wood and British Link course in a brisk four hours. The shotgun start meant that everyone was off the course at the same time, and could shower and change into their tourney-provided golf jersey, considered by all as one of the tops shirts annually, before making their way to Misty’s on Soi Pattayaland 2 for a grand spread courtesy of Palmer’s Restaurant and The Sportsman Restaurant.
A special thanks to General Manager Michael Mesommont and his capable top man, Egon Nielsen, son of the Kronborg’s Bjarne Nielsen, for the extraordinary presentation of course and assistance in set-up. Michael’s organization, from caddies to cart boys, to green-keepers, to clubhouse staff, etc. all deserved top honors for making the day so enjoyable for all who participated.
The players were treated to the standard faire of sponsored technical prize distractions such as Near Pins (The Classroom) and Long Drives (Shenanigan’s), and nearest the Keg (Misty’s) which were embellished by the overt generousness of their respective sponsors’ prizes. In what has become a Misty’s signature, two motorbikes were offered as hole-in-one prizes on two separate par threes, courtesy of Suzy Wong A-Go-Go - BKK and Playskool A-Go-Go - BKK. While this is the second year that the prizes have gone unclaimed, one can count on the odds catching-up eventually.
Handicaps notwithstanding, the seasoned competitors held up better in the crucible of battle. The three top teams were all made up of golfers who compete locally 3-4 times a week. The “Four of a Kind” shot a fine 58.3 total for Second Runner-up and were comprised of Adam “New York Slim” Schoenfeld, Ian “Hay-penny” Halfpenny, Kenny “K4” Kutzing and Jim “I sometimes play like I have” Puleo.
“The Blobs” put together an exemplary 56.0 total, good enough to win last year but, regrettably, only good for 1st Runner-up this year. Their big horse was Simon of Philbrook, but he was helped in no small part by The Good Roger Koehler, Sugar Ray “I have a Handle” Handford and Irish Colm Mullen.
“The Birdie Boys”, last years 2nd Runners-up lost the services of Glyn Nicholas, so team captain Roy Thornton MBE sought out an able replacement. He must have found the right free agent as the addition of Lewiinski’s Golf Manager, John Emmerson, catapulted the already strong core, comprised additionally of Richard Holmes and Barry Traynor, to an incredible 55.1 to end the two-year reign of “Mike and the Mechanics” (who were not far off the podium at 59.9). It should be noted that the “Birdie Boys” had the lowest aggregate handicap in the field at 3.9 and sported the only “team jerseys”. Will we see more of those next year?
Andy would like to acknowledge the participation of teams and supporters from Solar Golf (two teams), The Full Moon Bar (two teams), Shenanigan’s, The Classrooom, The Lookout Bar, The Jack Tar Bar, The Pinnacle Resort, The Sugar Shack and The Traveller’s Rest Golf Society, Baltex and the gang at Lewiinski’s.
To make this tournament a success for the Camillian Social Center required funds over and above those generated by the tournament entry cost alone. Therefore, special thanks to the contributions of Alan Bolton Property Consultants, The Pattaya Real Estate Company, Morning Cloud, Suzie Wong’s A-Go-Go - BKK, Sheba’s A-Go-Go - BKK, Playskool A-Go-Go - BKK, Bruno’s, The Penthouse Hotel, The Classroom, Shenanigan’s and The Shamrock Bar.
While there are many thanks to go around, the event could not have come off without the home support of Misty’s Manager Tim, the organizational efforts of John Emmerson, the photography of Steve Ellison and the generosity of the events host, Andy James. While thanks are being handed out, let’s not forget the lovely ladies of Misty’s who made a hot day hotter by helping out at registration, team photos, and post tourney frivolity.

The addition of the Misty’s girls could make any team look good

Damian’s super round leaves him facing the scalpel

IPGC golf from The Caddy Shack

Tuesday, November 21, Sattahip, Medal
Tuesday was a trip to the Navy golf course at Sattahip for a Medal competition over the South & East layouts. Due to the John Preddy Memorial Tournament taking place the following day, the field was somewhat reduced and they found the going tough in the sweltering conditions.
Coming in third place was Damian Trant with a net 76, one step above him on the podium was Basil Foley with a net 71, but two shots ahead and recording the only sub-70 score of the day was our winner Keith Smithson on net 69. The were no “twos” for the second time in a row and the players looked forward to a large rollover pot on Friday.
Friday, November 24, The Emerald, Stableford
The Emerald at Ban Chang was chosen to be the venue on Friday for a Stableford competition on a layout which is currently being prepared for the Asian Tour Qualifiers. The end result is narrow fairways and difficult greens which most of the field had problems negotiating.
One who found no problems at all with the conditions was Damian Trant who tore the course apart on the way to recording an astounding 45 points off his 20 handicap. Time to get the scalpel out golf committee. A long way back in second spot came Willy Wilcox on 37 points, closely followed in third by Keith Smithson who shot a level par 36 points.
The competition for the rolled over “twos” pot was intense and altogether 5 players came into the clubhouse to stake their claim. Well done to Keith Smithson, Bev Evans, Andy Redman, Willy Wilcox and Lindsay Joshua.

Non-counting 2’s: Joe Mooneyham, Rick Sharp
The ol’ Scribe, hard-over traditionalist that he is, seldom relinquishes the Title Slot to the gals of the Society but a performance such as Nat’s, last Sunday certainly can’t be overlooked.
Combining visiting wives and those local gals who are on spousal scholarships allowed the Society to provide the best looking of the membership their own Flight. It may be that henceforth the balance of the gals would like to have their own flight and would prefer to have Nat put in her own. She lapped the fairer field by eight points with a fine 40-point effort.
Nat’s handicap will now drop to a fantastic 17, not bad for a young lady that has only been playing a couple of years and usually only once a week, at that.
On the more mundane side of things, there were some equally fine performances and none better that Blackpool Steve’s MoM 42 points. Steve, like many of his Shack brethren have made incredible moves on their handicap since supplementing their home games across the way, with a couple a week with the Society. Steve led two fine golfers across the line in the Premier Flight, as the 9 handicapped Iowa Hawkeye, “Double D” Darren Smith, had 40 points and Graham Johnson, the GM’s evil twin, gathered 39 points off a scant 5 handicap.
The Hay-penny took the day’s middle flight with an excellent 41 points. A couple of old standbys out of the lead foursome, The Valet’s Best Friend and The Hermit, picked up what Ian left behind/
The “Mini” Cooper topped out the day’s third male flight with 39 points. That put him a digit ahead of Nice Guy Robbie and yet another in front of Sugar Ray “I already have a handle” Handford. A curiosity on the day is that no podium position was decided by a count back.
Monday, November 20, Crystal Bay - White Tees, Stroke/Medal
A Flight
1st Jan Eriksen (13), net 69
2nd Takeshi Hakosaki (11), net 69
3rd Peter Hynard (9), net 70
4th Kris Kritsanajootha (8), net 70
B Flight
1st Geoff Kubas (24), net 67
2nd Charlie Sheppard (20), net 70
3rd Kurt-Erik Persson (26), net 71
4th Peirre Bietry (22), net 72
2’s: Takeshi, Hakosaki, Charles Sheppard, Adam Schoenfeld
The gang doesn’t look too fondly on a round of Stroke/Medal, considering it a hard day at the office. But the GM wants them ready for Lewiinski’s Open in mid-February, so off the good sized field went to count ‘em all at Crystal Bay, f/k/a Natural Park Resort, f/k/a Panya Resort.
Nobody counted less than Geoff Kubas who had a fine net 67 on his last round of this visit. That was three in front of Charlie and yet another in front of the irrepressible Kurt-Erik. Monsieur Pierre edged newcomer Eddie Graham by a count back to pick up the rare fourth place loot.
The Quiet One edged an old friend who we wish we saw more of, Takeshi-san, on count back to take the four place A Flight. Peter Hynard and Kris Krits fought it out for the bigger bag of lucre, with the Brit having the better of it.
Wednesday, November 22, Mountain Shadow - Blue Tees, Stableford
A Flight
1st Simon Philbrook (6), 36 points
2nd Julian Clarke (6), 33 points
3rd John Hillier (12), 33 points
B Flight
1st Don Lehmer (13), 32 points
2nd Eddy Beilby (18), 32 points
3rd Dave McFeely (16), 31 points - c/b Lee A and Bruce Milner
C Flight
1st Kurt-Erik Persson (26), 30 points
2nd Adam Schoenfeld (19), 29 points
3rd Brain Cooper (24), 28 points
2’s: Simon Philbrook, Martin Todd, Kenneth Anderson, Dave McFeely, Robert Sellick, Brian Lee 92)
Big Simon Philbrook, a fine cricketer in his own right on this week prior to the Ashes tilt, was the only player to match his handicap on the layout that must be considered the toughest par 72 on the Eastern Seaboard. It was probably the least attended presentation on record as the remaining eight pay-slots were all won with 33 points or less. Julian Clarke, on this last Society comp, of the current visit, edged Nice Guy Johnny on count back in the top flight to establish the podium order behind Simon of Philbrook.
The Lady’s Man counted back the Man of Leisure in B Flight. Irish Dave McFeely’s eyes were smiling as he had the better of the count back to grab the last B Flight loot ahead of the Caddy to the Stars, Lee Adelly, and the Pied Piper of Oz, Bruce Milner.
Kurt-Erik gathered all the guile and treachery garnered over many years at this game and brought home C Flight gold ahead of New York Slim and the “Mini” Cooper.

George Oakley gets 2nd Ace in a week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, November 20, Mountain Shadow, Pairs Scramble Stroke
1st Roar Berger & Kjell Christiansen, net 61
2nd Colin Taylor & Bob Heath, net 65
3rd Russell Exley & Alan Griffiths, net 66 c/b
4th Peter Skinner & Stuart Bulger, net 66
Having left Pattaya in fine weather, we ran into an enormous downpour that delayed the start of our competition for almost an hour and a half. Once on the course, and given the state of the fairways and greens following the heavy rain, it came as a pleasant surprise to find that the scores were still quite good
Maybe the most surprising aspect was to find the two highest handicappers in the form of Roar Berger and Kjell Christiansen at the top of the podium when playing what is arguably the toughest course in the area. Neither of them could ever remember having a card, under any format, that did not have a seven on it and indeed only two sixes and with each player having to take seven tee shots under medal play, the end result was of the very top order. Even with Kjell having to take the last two tee shots, one at the testing 17th over 150 yards of water, they still managed a couple of bogeys to finish four ahead of the chasing pack.
These were led by Colin Taylor and “Captain” Bob Heath with a score that would have been in the lead on almost any other day after both players combined exceptionally well.
Russell Exley and Alan Griffiths took third place on count back from Peter Skinner and Stuart Bulger after the latter pair could not match their opponent’s strong finish.
Due to the format the “twos” competitions were suspended for the day. Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the resident PGA teaching professional, welcomed new members Kinya Akiyama and Shiuchi Kodaka.
Wednesday, November 22, The Emerald, Stableford
Division 1
1st Frank Hughes, 34pts
2nd Dave Howden, 31pts c/b
3rd David Ross, 31pts
Division 2
1st Alan Griffiths, 35pts
2nd Philippe Berra, 33pts c/b
3rd Russell Exley, 33pts
Having booked the course some 2 months previously, it was a surprise to find that it was to be one of the three to be used in the Asian Tour Qualifying event and therefore, was being set up for that purpose with the fairways reduced to narrow strips and the rough allowed to grow to severe lengths.
This is all very well as a testing course for the tour hopefuls but hardly what the average Pattaya golfer expects or indeed can handle. It was no surprise to find that the CSS moved out to 75 and the competition non-counting for increases in handicap.
Only Alan Griffiths in the second division managed to get within the buffer zone as he easily took the division by two from Philippe Berra and Russell Exley, with Philippe just getting second on the back six.
Frank Hughes was the only player in the first division to get within two of his handicap as he won by three, ahead of Dave Howden and David Ross who were also separated by the count back.
But with the course playing at its hardest, the day belonged to George Oakley, one of the group from South Herts, who on the 13th, against a fierce head wind, hit a five wood straight into the cup to record his second hole-in-one within six days.
On the previous Thursday, George had produced his first ever hole-in-one at Laem Chabang on B8 off the back Black tees, 194 yards also against a strong wind, with a three wood into the hole. And as these both occurred on George’s first trip to Thailand it is certain it will not be long before he is back taking on some of the other courses to try and repeat his successes.
George put his new found ability down to practice and concentration following a good night’s sleep and of course not forgetting the Pro V 1 Titleist balls that he always uses.
Friday, November 24, Phoenix - Blue Tees, Monthly Medal
Division 1
1st John Horwath, net 68
2nd Frank Hughes, net 70
3rd Peter Tucker, net 72
Division 2
1st Russell Exley, net 75
2nd Alan Griffiths, net 77
3rd Roar Berger, net 80
After the trials at Emerald, it was good to get back to a normal course, but Phoenix is now no push over as only 3 players managed to equal or better par from the blue tees that were about as far back as they could be.
John Horwath whose handicap is sure to be on the downward track after producing another sub handicap round, his third in four outings, easily took the first division from Frank Hughes by two shots. Frank meanwhile was another two ahead of Peter Tucker, who at last is seeing some benefit from the hours spent on the practice range.
Alan Griffith made a valiant effort to get into the end of year gold and silver positions in the final medal but was pipped at the post by his good friend (?), Russell Exley by a couple of strokes. Roar Berger took the final place with an unlikely but good enough eight over.
There was good news from Europe where Steve Martin the Honary European Senior Professional qualified for the coming senior tour in fourth place ahead of 85 other final qualifiers that didn’t make it. We wish him lots of success to add to his many trophies of the past.
Roar Berger took the only “two” in the second division but there were none in the first division. Before presenting the prizes Richard welcomed new member Dominic DiValentine.

The Beautiful Game? by Riz Taylor

Top two show Premiership’s class

Manchester United’s home fixture against Chelsea on Sunday contained all that a Premiership match should - two sides doing their utmost to win the match, some thrilling, end-to-end action, flirtations with sexy football and, of course, a couple of goals. Even the refereeing was consistent and unfussy.
If only every game was like that. Though both sides will have left Old Trafford rueing missed chances to snatch all three points, the 1-1 draw was a fair result for England’s two best teams and leaves the title race wide open, which isn’t something that could be said at the same stage last year.
Many neutrals were cheering for a United victory that would seriously dent Chelsea’s ambitions of a third straight Premiership trophy. Though most of those neutrals don’t yet seem to have the same hatred of the Blues that they reserved for United a decade ago, times are changing and you feel that a United win would have been greeted with more cheers than jeers. Or perhaps that’s just me.
Whilst it wasn’t a 5-4 thriller the game showed enough quality and entertainment to provide a decent advertisement for Premiership football in a week that saw the division take a knock from north of the border. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan had set tongues wagging by suggesting that there’s “not that great a difference” between the Premiership and the SPL last week, and immediately walked the walk by leading his side to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Glasgow days later. Those three points ensured his side of a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time since the modern format came into effect.
“We know the SPL is not the same as the English Premiership but there’s not that great a difference,” said Strachan. “We’d be competitive in the top half of the Premiership. I think they give themselves too many pats on the back for being the best league in the world. It’s alright at times, but I’ve seen some dire games there as well.”
He’s not wrong. Too many of those matches have involved Liverpool this season, and once again the ‘Reds’ were reliant on Steven Gerrard to get them out of a spot against Manchester City at Anfield after another uninspiring performance from his colleagues. How long can Rafa Benitez last as coach on the back of his 2005 Champions League success if his side continue to struggle domestically? Liverpool sit well off the pace in ninth.
One place below are Tottenham, whose rampant 3-1 win over Wigan at White Hart Lane will delight fans but leave them wondering why the side are so unpredictable from week to week. Whilst Spurs have easily qualified for a spot in the final 32 of the UEFA Cup they’ve found things increasingly difficult in the Premiership this season.
Could the demands of European football be taking their toll on Spurs league form? Blackburn and Newcastle might argue the same point. Whilst both sides have also marched into the UEFA knockout stages the pair sit in sixteenth and seventeenth respectively. Newcastle’s season has been particularly disastrous, although three points from a win over Portsmouth on Saturday did manage to lift them from the relegation spots. Antoine Sibierski was the unlikely hero.
Meanwhile Reading continued their stunning start with an away win over Fulham and Bolton moved third after beating Arsenal by three goals to one, two of which were scored by former gunner Nicolas Anelka. Fellow high-flyers Aston Villa could only manage a draw at home to Middlesbrough.
After another round of midweek fixtures the action continues this weekend, the highlight being the ‘Norf Landon’ derby as Arsenal host Tottenham in the early match tomorrow. Defeat for Arsenal would be unthinkable if they’re to make up lost ground on the leaders, whilst Spurs will be chomping at the bit for a win over their rivals in the first derby to be played at the Gunners’ spanking new Emirates Stadium.
It might have its faults and the odd boring game, but the Premiership still has much to offer. A genuine title race always helps, of course, and thankfully it looks like Chelsea will be given a decent run for their money this time around, however much of it they might have.
A quiet week in East London
After the finalisation of Icelander Eggert Magnusson’s takeover, West Ham manager Alan Pardew’s jokes that he’ll allow the sprightly billionaire the opportunity of a kick-around with the squad were short-lived when the manager was forced to respond to reports of a gambling culture amongst his players after a story appeared in the News of the World on Sunday. “I am going to address the situation with gambling, because it is not the first time it has happened at the club,” he said, offering reporters odds of 7-2 on him sorting it out by Christmas.
On Thursday defender Anton Ferdinand appeared in court charged with assault, and then ‘Argie’ striker Carlos Tevez kept the club in the news by storming out of Upton Park after being substituted by Pardew. “He went home straight after the game and I’m very disappointed about that,” said the Premiership’s busiest boss, who, it is reported, is also busily trying to lure pint-sized winger Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea.
The club are also said to be entering talks on a move to London’s Olympic Stadium after the 2012 games. And oh, let’s not forget the small matter of a football match, the Hammers coming through their assorted off-field dramas to overcome Sheffield United by a goal to nil.
Torquay take a stand
Some fabulous news for the football purist this week arrived from the hotbed of English football that is the south-west county of Devon. Despite struggling at the foot of League Two, Torquay United have threatened their playing staff with dismissal if they con referees to win free kicks and penalties.
The initiative was introduced by chairman Chris Roberts, who told BBC Sport, “I want to win football matches but I want to win matches without cheating.””
“Someone said to me, when we were talking during the World Cup, that clubs can’t do anything about it but I thought, ‘Well, actually they can’,” said Roberts, who took over at the club in October.
“When I arrived, I had a long chat with the manager, Ian Atkins, and we thought it was something we could do here so then it was just a question of when to launch it.
“What we are suggesting may sound draconian but a player has to do the same thing three times to be dismissed. And we are talking about black and white incidents - not situations where a player goes down and some say he dived and some say he didn’t.”
“The older players were very supportive,” he continued. “Some others were surprised and some are probably still thinking about it. But at the end of the day, diving is never accidental. If a player decides to fall over and appeal to the referee, that is a conscious decision which people make.”
Roberts, a new favourite of this column, is hoping other clubs will join the initiative.
“It’s the moral principle behind it that’s important. I’ve challenged other clubs to follow suit and I’m keen to hear why they wouldn’t,” he said. “But I’m not here to be confrontational with other clubs. I’m responsible for the conduct of Torquay’s players on the pitch and that’s what I’m doing.”

The Captain runs dry at Sri Racha

PSC golf from The Peacock Place

Monday, November 20, Sri Racha, 2-Ball BB
After a hearty breakfast we headed to the Sri Racha golf course for a 2-ball better ball stroke round. The venue is closing on the 1st December; we thought it was closed already as you couldn’t buy a beer on the course and that’s no good for this writer.
Eddie and Apple won the A Division with a great score of net 62. Runner-up (even without the beer) was Capt. Bob and Ken McCarthy with a net 63. B Division was won by Barry and Trudy Chadbourne with net 69 on a count back from John and Wendy Khan.
We did get a storm so not all the player’s finished, however one intrepid golfer even managed a 2 and took the total pot which was quite large, the man in question being Chris Barnes. There was no free beer so we enjoyed the beautiful buffet put on by Dao and the girls.
Wednesday, November 22, Noble Place, Stableford
Noble Place, soon to be changed to Greenwood Gold Club was our midweek venue. We played a single Stableford comp and the A Division was won by Terry Phur with a fine 36 points and the runner-up was Jack Mosely on a count back from Mark Joshua, both with 33 points. Brian Webb took the B Division with a fine 36 points whilst Dave Mawford was runner up on a count back from my old mate Ken Little, both on 34 points.
There were three 2’s; one each from Terry Phur, Eddie Blackwell and Mark Joshua and the free beer went to Angus McFarlane for his mighty effort, just coming back from home to see us all. Welcome back mate!
If you are looking for a game of golf anytime just give Bob a call on 087 941 2474 or call into the Peacock Place on Siam Country Road for a cold beer and put your name on the sheet.

Andersen’s fairytale at Noble Place

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

On Tuesday, 21st November, another large field represented the Pattaya Golf Society in a medal event at faraway Noble Place golf club.
The men’s field was divided into two divisions with the cut at eighteen and under and there was also a Ladies’ division on the day. Indeed in the ‘fairer division’ the day ended with a three-way tie for top spot with Mod Churaiska, Sharon Burton and Jill Stanley all posting scores of net 84.
In the second flight Carl Lovatt, Tony Sanderson and Ray Underwood tied for third on net 74 whilst the plaudits went to Masashi Iizumi, one of the OK Corral’s most popular golfers, and his score of 71 represented his best round for a while. In the top flight Erik Anttonen and John Howarth shared second place with honourable net 70’s whilst the star of the day was undoubtedly the ever-smiling Dane, Kenneth Andersen whose card of gross 72, net 67 was fairytale stuff on this tough track. Figures of 36 on both nines spoke volumes about his golfing ability and for his playing group it must have been a wonderful experience.
Kenneth also fired two birdie “twos” to share the large pot with Vince Hatton, playing his final round before returning home. The Booby Bevy claims ignored Paul Quodomine’s caddy who had driven his golf cart over his foot and had thus been summarily dismissed in shame and went instead to Reg Carlisle for his dismal return after his first round with the group.
Kiwi flies at Plutaluang
The Pattaya Golf Society took the short trip to the Royal Thai Navy course at Plutaluang on Thursday to play its weekly Stableford event. The large field was divided into two flights at 21 and under and proceeded off the South and East tees simultaneously.
In a competitive second flight Freddy Braun took up the cudgels and posted a score of 33 points for third place whilst an in-form Ray Underwood gained his second podium place of the week with an excellent 34 points. The flight winner was Randy Haupt and his round of 37 points was a good return on the day.
In the top flight Erik Anttonen and John Horwath both reappeared on the honours list, joining Mike Benton on 36 points for a share of third place whilst Les Hall continued his winning week with a round of 37 points and second place. The winner, with the best round of the day, was David Thomas and his score of thirty-nine points was a merit of his length and accuracy. It also included a near hole-in-one on the East 5th when his ball came to rest within three inches of the hole and the ensuing birdie two took a share of the winnings, along with ebullient Bob Martin whose effort on the same hole marked an equally fine return to action with the PGS.
Reg Carlisle completed a comically miserable week when he stood on the first tee and took a shining Callaway driver out of his hired set and found it was left-handed, as were the rest, and the indignity of a march back to the clubhouse to hire an appropriate set was more than enough to bear. Instead the Booby Bevy went to playing partner Ian Hart who scored twenty points but signed for nineteen. Everyone had enjoyed another fine day on the golf course.

Brendan shines at the Emerald

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday, November 21, The Emerald, Stableford
Once again the faithful gathered at Tropical Bert’s for one of his fine breakfasts, before climbing into transport and nipping down to Bang Chang.
Stood on the first tee, it was obvious to all that this was going to be a really hot day, and so it proved and we also had the added problem of only being able to use the carts on the designated pathways. The course itself was not in the best of condition, and this is probably due to the current preparations for the upcoming Asian qualifiers.
Round over, we sat in the open-air restaurant and the cards started to come in. Quite frankly the scores were awful, with only one person shooting his handicap, (and he had 7 birdies), and very few of the others making 30 points.
Back at Bert’s it was a question of a long wait for the players to return - for some reason it always is when we play at Bang Chang. Anyway, to the winners and in the A Flight, the player of the day, with also 3 technical prizes was Brendan McGovern, with Rick Evans in second place. In the B Flight the winner was Dick Warberg with Brian Blackford in second.

The ‘Smiling Assassin’ kills ‘em all

PSC golf from The Oohsa Bar

Tuesday, November 24, saw a large group head off to Pattaya Country Club for what turned out to be a very good day’s golf.
The course itself was in excellent condition and with both fairways and greens playing true we expected that it would take a good score to win, and indeed it did. Little did we realize however just how good a score it was going to be.
Back at the bar we received one scorecard that we had to check and check again, but there was no doubt as to who had won the day’s honours. Paul Smylie, winning for the second week in a row, had returned to the clubhouse with an excellent 45, (yes 45) points playing off his 27 handicap. In second place was David Charles (20) with 39points on count back over Su Murphy (37). Keith Hodges (26) wrapped up the podium positions taking fourth place with 38 points
I think it’s fair to say Paul will be anticipating a cut very soon. Well played mate!
Near pins were won by Rich Murphy and Colin Cronin with the long putt award going to Su Murphy, a very long one too. Colin also scored a ‘2’ on one of the par 3 holes and won a free beer.
Oohsa Bar staff showed their usual good hospitality both before and after the golf. Boss Malcolm won the killer pool which served as some consolation for his less than successful day on the golf course.
If you would like to join us for our next outing please call Keith Hodges on 087 916 7171 or drop into Oohsa Bar on Soi Kao Talo for more information. Transport can be provided and all your food is provided free.

Ray’s Revenge

PSC golf from The Café Kronborg

Thursday, November 23, Pattaya Country Club, Scramble
This day, for those who do not remember, was always set aside for the Papa Ray Rogers Thanksgiving Day Scramble competition. Tradition had it that after the golf, all the players would go back to Ray’s house where we would be ‘regally’ entertained by Ray and his helpers, notably Bjarne and the good people of the Cafe Kronborg. When Ray passed away, it was decided by his family and all his friends to continue the tournament in his memory.

The winning team celebrate their success with ‘Emcee Dave’

And so it was that after a fine breakfast at the Café Kronborg, all the players headed off to Pattaya Country Club for our designated tee off times. An initially overcast and cool day soon developed some tell tale dark clouds and before long it was pouring down. We waded through ankle deep lakes of water, and the greens were awash with the deluge. Indeed at times the greens were unplayable. This is just the sort of big joke Ray would have appreciated, and thus the day was nicknamed ‘Rays Revenge’ ... and why not?
Soaked to the skin the players soldiered on and despite the conditions the scores were not bad at all; on the contrary, there was one absolutely amazing score and a few more that were pretty good.
Back at the Kronborg all was hustle and bustle as the staff, led by Songkram laid out the food table with all the normal Turkey Day goodies on it. Then the ‘wolves’ descended.
Dave meanwhile was sorting out the cards, and getting the presentation ready. So to the results, and in the face of the rain that had almost washed out the day, the scores were excellent.
In third place was the team of Warren Holland, Frank Dalton, William Zigler and Earl Martin with a fine 58.4. In second place came the team of Derek Brook, Vincent Smyth, Rick Evans and Thomas Johannson, who shot 11 Birdies for a fine net 57.3. Topping this, with a gross 56, (16 under par), and a net 52.3 was the winning team of Perry McNeely, Anders Pederson, Hans Pederson and Magnus Johannson. A score of a lifetime!

Monday, November 20, The Emerald, Stableford
Another full turnout for the ever-improving Emerald course. The numbers have been increasing over the past two weeks to our maximum of 28. The divisions were cut at eighteen and below and in Div 2, Les Hall came home first with 33 points, Tony Duthie took second on 32 points with Mark Brenton third on 31points.
In Division 1, Dave Richards took the top spot on 34 points with Ted Morris taking second on count back over Jeff North, both players tied on 32 points.
There were three 2’s today, shared by Steve Ironside, Ted Morris and Willie Wilcox and the ‘Ladies Tipple’ was won by John McLoone for walking in after nine holes with a sore toe.
Wednesday, November 22, Noble Place, Stableford
Another good turnout for the popular Noble Place with the B course now open again. Also a welcome return to Tom Sathrum, and he was smiling later as the only winner of the 2’s today.
Les Hall scored a ‘best of the day’ 38 points to take second division with Graham Farrell beating Miss Nom for the runner-up spot, both shooting 36 points. A greater battle in the premier flight saw two amazing 40 pointers by Dave Richards and Ted Morris tied for first place and as they could not be separated on count back, the prize was shared. Andy came in third with 39 points.
The ‘Ladies Tipple’ was awarded to Tony Duthie for his amazing feat of driving 87km to get to Noble place in the morning and 51km on the return journey trip, mmmmm.
Jomtien Golf meets at Paweenas in Soi 5, Jomtien Beach Rd. every Monday and Wednesday at 9.00am for a 10.30 tee off time. Transport and club hire are available, please sign up in the bar or contact Glyn on 086 837 5464.

Marc Levy wins inaugural John Preddy Memorial Trophy

PSC golf from The Bunker

The first John Preddy Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Eastern Star Country Club on Wednesday, November 22nd. John was a regular golfer with The Bunker Bar, in fact he was the Club Secretary, Transport Manager and he did everything else that had anything to do with golf at The Bunker, so it was a great loss to us all when he passed away in July this year. In his memory The John Preddy Memorial Cup will be played for annually on or around the 23rd November which was John’s birthday.

Marc Levy becomnes the first winner of the John Preddy Memorial Trophy

More than sixty golfers turned up from various golf societies to show their respects for John, which shows just how much respect and admiration many people in golfing circles had for him and a personal thank you goes out to you all.
A special thank you also to co-sponsors San Miguel Brewery, The Buffalo Bar, Eastern Star Country Club and Resort (who had the course in magnificent condition for the event), Geoff Parker, who is doing a great job since the loss of John and many other individuals too numerous to mention who helped and contributed in many ways to make this event happen.

John McDonald was the winner of the ‘Longest Drive’ competition

The golf itself was a very enjoyable day. Following brunch in the clubhouse, the golfers played a Stableford format with two flights with the cut at 18 and under. As well as the main competition, there were a host technical prizes on offer including a fun prize on the long par three 17th hole, where a case of San Miguel beer could be won. Another fun competition was held after the serious stuff for the girls from The Buffalo Bar who helped out around the course, this was a longest drive competition held on the driving range and was won by the lovely Tiay who hit the ball 95 yards.
After the golf the players returned to The Bunker Bar for a Buffet before heading to The Buffalo Bar for the prize giving and further entertainment and where friends of John paid further tributes to a great man.

3rd Somkid (Mam) Bonseim (39), 37pts
Nearest Pins: Sao Suksawat, John O’Leary, James Chawke, Joe Kubon

The Bowling Green group had an advantage this day as we got to have a practice round on the East-West course before the PSC monthly being held on Friday. This proved to be a help for some players as they had never played the course before. The turnout was very high and we all enjoyed the day.
Derek Eastham finally broke out of his slump to come in with a winning score of 41 pts in the A flight, meanwhile the Thai Tigress, Tewin Lamthong also came in with a very good 43 pts to win the B flight.
Sunday, November 19, Eastern Star C.C., Stableford
1st Stefan Nordback (31), 44pts
2nd Phil Dwyer (19), 37pts
3rd Tony Oates (12), 36pts c/b
4th Marcus Mattsson (18), 36pts
Nearest Pins: Terry Hopkins, Tony Oates, Stefan Nordback, Derek Eastham
2s: Tony Oates
Today Stefan gave us a lesson on how to score at Eastern Star, he started the front 9 with a reasonable 14 points but decided to turn on the burners and scored an incredible 27 points on the back 9. This was one great feat. Dancing Phil Dwyer was the only other player who managed to break par on the day with a nice 37 points.
The course was in great condition and we can happily report that we are now back playing here on our regular Saturday slot.

2’s None
Even with a trip to hospital later in the day, John managed to put aside all the worries and come in with a great score of 41 pts to take the win. Goes to show that golf, even though it can be frustrating can also be a source of relaxation in some cases. The only other player to break par on the day was Bob Short with a respectable 37pts. The A Flight had a tough day of it with nobody able to break Par.
The golfers would like to thank Tony, Jean and staff at the Bowling Green for all the great service we enjoyed this past week and we always look forward to our return for our dinners and a few brews of some sort.
If any one is interested in golfing with us, we play every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and meet at the Bowling Green at 7:45am for breakfast and transportation. New players are always made to feel welcome. Call Fergus on086 056 7019 or Bowling Green 038-720742 or send an email to [email protected].

Stephen Snelgrove takes ‘Low Net’ title for November

PSC 64th Members Golf Tournament.

Is that the time 6:30am! Oh well, off to Plutaluang to organise the 64th PSC Monthly Golf Tournament.
We arrive at the course at 7:30am after picking up members of the committee on the way and start setting up the reception desk. The start sheet is full one week before the tournament date with 128 golfers due to play the course, and the flights were evenly split with the exception of the ladies so the winner had to be on his metal for the day.
The first player to arrive was at 7:15, believing his tee off time to be 7:30 and not 9:30 so he had a good breakfast and sleep.

The happy winners pose with their trophies following the presentation

From 8:30 onwards a steady stream of players arrived at the reception desk to be met by the cheerful trio of Tim Holt, Herbie Scwieterman and Nigel Cannon and I am glad to report that the number of queries on handicaps were few and far between.
And so to the day itself, hot and humid with a well-watered course were the conditions that we all had to endure. Playing the East and South course, that’s S for South Vincent not W for White tees = West course (He helped do the cards too!). the Chairman was heard to be shouting profusely at Vincent and his playing partner Brendan as they set off (twice) for the West course.
Anyway they eventually led the field away and all went well for the first 9 holes and the cross over did not delay any players until some ‘locals’ infiltrated the field with a 5-ball and slowed the pace of play considerably.
So the game over and we all made our way to the sanctuary of the restaurant to order a meal and a beer. Good idea unless you were a late starter when the beer consumption overtook the ability of the fridges to chill the beer - maybe we all should have had a tot of rum!
Vincent, Ray, Tim and Mike set about collating all the results in good time and Emcee Nigel Cannon called everyone to order and introduced the new Golf Chairman, Tony Oakes.
Tony thanked everyone for their attendance and hoped they had all had a good day. He then went on to thank Mike Gerrard the outgoing chairman for all his hard work over the last few months and said Mike had resigned for personal reasons.
Tony then informed us of the passing of Don McAllister from Ban Chang and offered on everyone’s behalf condolences to his family.
He also told us that the current PSC President Gerry Carpenter had resigned on health grounds and will be sorely missed and he was sure the newly elected President Dennis Willett would carry on the sterling work. This appointment was greeted with warm approval.
The Chairman then passed on his thanks to all the Plutaluang staff who had made the PSC most welcome. All in all a good day with a special mention to Initra Goransson who won 3 near pins. Well Done Initra. Next Tournament Noble Place 15th December.

The Square Ring: by Howie Reed

Jeeves had wanted to start off this week’s edition of The Square Ring but he seems to have gone AWOL again, so we’ll plow ahead without him for the time being.
The ‘Phenomenon Puncher’ from the Philippines, that would be Manny Pacquiao, is the talk of not only the boxing world but the legal system as well. After he destroyed Eric Morales in 3 stanza’s 2 weeks ago, Top Rank boss Bob Arum announced that he had signed Pacquiao to a 4-fight deal. This came as a big surprise to Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions who had signed Pacquiao to a 7-fight deal on September 18th.
In announcing the signing Arum said, “For God’s sake, the kid never even graduated from grammar school. They may say they love the sport but they (Golden Boy Promotions) are creeps.”
‘Always take the High Road’ Bob strikes again. Arum also announced that The Pac Man’s next fight will be sometime next March in a casino owned by business friend Steve Wynn in Macau.
Golden Boy Promotions have maintained that they have a valid contract for 7 fights. Last week they filed suit in Los Angeles against Top Rank for ‘torturous interference’ with what they claim as an “existing, fully negotiated and executed promotional agreement with Manny Pacquiao.”
Eric Gomez, a VP for Golden Boy stated that Pacquiao’s lawyer negotiated, reviewed, initialed and signed the agreement together with the Filipino boxer: “We believe that Manny has been ill advised to enter into another agreement”, he said to reporters. “We believe further that Manny’s advisors Michael Koncz and Wakee Salud and his attorney Franklin Gacal have conspired against Golden Boy and induced Manny to breach his agreement.”
Gomez disclosed that apart from their lawsuit against Arum, they are also preparing follow-up lawsuits against Koncz, Salud and Gacal.
The word was that Eric Morales was going to hang’em up, “I’ve had enough.”
Well not quiet. As if by magic the Tijuana born but living in San Diego fighter now wants one more title fight. This time at 135lbs against WBC champ Joel Casamayor. Now you may ask yourself, how does Eric Morales become the number #1 challenger for the WBC lightweight title when he’s never fought as a lightweight and has lost 4 of his last 5? “Well”, said Self. “It’s World Boxing Council magic.”
And now here’s Jeeves - just returned I would imagine from a few hour’s with O.R. down at the dance recital palace with beverages. I trust he did his own ‘check bin’ this time and not mine.
“Your Lordship that was all a mistake. O.R. was just having a go at you with help along the way from Woody. I told them not to but you know those fun boys. Now to some boxing.
“The on again, off again WBO world championship fight between Scott Harrison and Nicky Cook is on and ready to go on December 9.
Graciano Rocchigianni the former light heavy champ who either did or did not get $30 million USD from the WBC is headed back to jail. Early last week it was announced that he was opening a gym for “troubled youth”. Now he’s back in the Old Nick for probation violations. Naughty, stupid boy he is.
“I think you already reported Your Lordship that Vitali Klischko was going to make a comeback, was in training and that RTL had signed a TV contract with him.
Mr. Klitschko would like to inform you that this is not true. He commented: ‘It was a big surprise for me to find out that I’m coming back and that RTL signed a television deal with me, and that I’m looking for an apartment in Hamburg, even though I have lived there for ten years now. Also, to find out that I’ll be training at the Universum Gym and with Fritz Sdunek is another surprise for me. I think such news caught them by surprise as well. I truly understand all those boxing fans that want to see me back in the boxing ring. But due to all my injuries, my sports career is over. If I can feel the pain from an injury I can’t be thinking about a comeback. If I want to comeback I have to be in top form, where I can fight on the level of a true champion versus another champion. I have to perform even better than in my last fight. So these rumors are just that - only rumors.’
“He talks funny Your Lordship but I for one couldn’t care less if he comes back or not. That’s my report.”
Thank you Jeeves. With this being the first of the month there are some big fights being held in the USA. The first Saturday of any month seems to be fight night in the U.S.
On the Boardwalk of Atlantic City two of the better-known Latin fighters will defend their respective welterweight crowns. Most boxing folks rank them as the number 1 and number 2 on the world. Will they meet someday? Yes, but it won’t be like the old Judy Collins song “Someday Soon.”
A loss against the other would take off some of the glitter so they continue to move forward fighting ‘contenders’. Miguel Cotto at 27-0 was labeled the “next great” but there seems to be something missing. He’s shown power with 22 KO’s from his 27 wins but he seems just a “click off”. Carlos Quintana provides the competition who like Cotto is from Puerto Rico and undefeated at 23-0. This would be a good time for Cotto to shine.
The other half of the “double dipper” has Antonio Margarito (33-4) defending his WBO welter crown against Joshua Clottey (29-1). Fighting as a welterweight isn’t easy with Floyd Mayweather jr. dominating things. Of course the “best fighter in the world”, Mr. Mayweather jr. has been ducking Margarito like a farang does yesterday’s Teelock. He should have little trouble beating Clottey and looking good while doing it. The danger here is that like many African fighters, Clottery does like to fight with his head used as a battering ram. His one loss to Carlos Baldomir, (recently taken to the woodshed by Mayweather jr.), came about when he got DQ’d for “repeatedly leading with his head.”
The other “big” fight card of the weekend has names but maybe not much else. Winky “I’m Boring” Wright (50-3-1) gets the top billing as he faces the one-time great Ike Quartey (37-3-1). Although to give the devil his due, as Mom use to say, Wright looked ok in drawing with Jermaine Taylor last time out. Anyone that saw Quartey against Vernon Forrest in August will know that he’s a shadow of the great fighter he once was. Not going to be pretty.
After Jeff Lacy (21-1) got pounded by Joe Calzaghe his camp called a “time out” which was wise. Now 9 months later he gets it on with Vitali Tsypko (17-1). These two met in 2004 with the bout being declared a “no contest” due to a cut Tsypko received from an “unintentional” head butt.
The weekend schedule is interesting but nothing earth-shaking.
Jeeves, I believe we have something to celebrate. Our friend “Dapper” Dave Stewart, the King of the Second Road, got back in the ring last Saturday with a big win over Ghanaian Kpakpo Allotey. Dave’s now 19-1 and in line for a Commonwealth lightweight title shot. Stewart’s lone loss came against pal Lee Meager last May in a battle that was nominated for British ‘fight of the year’. So Jeeves, if you would be kind enough to fetch us a couple of cold lager’s, a nice cigar and maybe a little Diana Washington on the music machine, we can call it a day.
