Swimming for a cause

All physically fit swimmers and bighearted sponsors are invited to join the 3rd Cross Bay Charity Swim on Sunday, 22 October 2006. On its third year, the charity swim organized by the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya and Dusit Resort, Pattaya, will see people go for a dip into Pattaya Bay’s waters to raise money for charity.

Last year’s swimmers with a child from the Barn Jing Jai Orphanage.

The 3.5-kilometer swim starts at 1 p.m. from Sea Rescue, near Bali Hai Lighthouse and ends at Dusit Resort, Pattaya’s Chaba Beach where sponsors, spectators and the children of the Barn Jing Jai Orphanage are waiting to cheer for the swimmers. Swimmers are requested to send in application before 14 October 2006.
Local businesses and individual donors supported the event last year and raised 165,250 baht for the children of the Barn Jing Jai Orphanage in Nongprue, Banglamung. It is hoped that this charity event will attract more sponsors, participants and spectators this year to raise more funds for the orphanage.
For swimmer application, sponsorship and other enquiries about the charity swim, please call Graham Hunt Crowley at 08 1340 8852.

Mercure stages fire drill and rescues 10 ‘trapped’ victims

Mercure Accor Hotel staff shout, “We have completed our training!”

Narisa Nitikarn
The Mercure Accor Hotel held its first fire drill on September 12, mobilizing all departments within the hotel and calling in outside rescue and relief services as part of the exercise.
General Manager Erwann Mahe said this was the first fire drill held by the hotel since it opened on July 5 last year, and that from now on this will be a bi-annual exercise.
Rescue and relief services including Sawang Boriboon Foundation, Banglamung Hospital and the Labour Protection Office Chonburi participated, with speakers attending to impart theoretical and practical knowledge to hotel employees.
The drill simulated a fire on the 7th floor in room 705 of the eight-story hotel. Ten customers and hotel staff were “trapped”. Staff members carried out their drills as they had been trained in advance and fire fighters brought in a basket ladder to rescue the 10. A fire drill caused by a gas leak was also practiced which emphasized the drilling of kitchen staff who were taught how to stop the leak.
Mahe said that in addition to ensuring staff were fully trained in the event of an emergency, the drill was held to create good relationships between the relevant responsible departments such as the police, rescue services and hospitals.
The hotel security has three teams that operate on a shift basis who will direct guests along the escape routes. The hotel has a fire escape at both ends of the building.

Dive, Dive, Dive

Members of the Pattaya City Expats Club on 9/24/2006 were given a glimpse into the world of underwater diving by Freddy Kruyt, a Dutchman. He learned to dive in Holland where the water is fit for only penguins. He must have been very bored to take up that sport there.
He spent the early years of his life driving chemical tankers all over Europe but when he was 29 years old he decided on a career change and the sea called him. Shortly thereafter he found Thailand and began working in dive shops here. Being an entrepreneur he opened his own dive shop and has been here ever since, working seven days a week.
He is an expert in technical diving, which means using various gases such as a mixture of helium and oxygen. This is the most dangerous kind of casual diving there is and allows few mistakes without deadly consequences. One of the benefits of this kind of diving is that your regulator emits no noise or bubbles and the fish are not afraid and let you come very close. One time, a not very large fish he was trying to pet bit his finger leaving a very nasty scar. Turtles can also be a bit dangerous in the right/wrong situation.
There is a lake in Thailand (a secret place) where a temple is under a few feet of water. Originally made of wood and stone, the wood is all rotted away but some bricks remain. He promised us that he took off his fins before he entered.
Next Week: A medical doctor will teach us how to remain healthy in Thailand.

Charity Club of Pattaya visits school building project

The Charity Club of Pattaya took time out to visit the new classroom at the Wat Wang Wa School Klang South of Rayong. They were surprised to see that the classroom was almost finished and will be ready to use at the beginning of October.

The new classroom at the Wat Wang Wa School Klang South of Rayong is nearly finished.

The Classroom will house many of the children in this very rural area of Rayong. The children at the moment are being taught in the open air, so the classroom will make a huge difference. When finished the Charity Club just need to furnish it.
The building will cost around 300,000 baht and the Charity Club is raising the funds with help from Jameson’s Irish Pub, Witherspoon’s, Oliver Twist’s, Shenanigan’s, Kilkenny’s, The Queen Victoria Inn plus private donations from Duane Pebworth of Gusswein Bangkok, Tony Shuttleworth and another kind hearted gent who wishes to remain anonymous.
The Charity Club of Pattaya’s remaining fund raising pub nights for this project are: Shenanigans on Saturday October 14, Kilkenny’s on Friday October 27, and Queen Victoria Inn on Saturday November 11.
Anyone wishing to donate a cash donation can contact the Charity Club of Pattaya at charityclubofpattaya@ yahoo.com, Malcolm 08 9744 1040, Christina 0895454185, or any of the participating bars.
