Barnstormers battle it out on the croquet lawn?

One of the most unique flying events in Thailand is the Annual Dokkrai Fly-In Croquet Competion held at John and Linda’s Dokkrai Lakeside Resort to the East of Pattaya. This is Thailand’s only resort with its own airstrip, which makes it a perfect location for the fly-in event.

The ‘magnificent men’, (and ladies) and their flying machines.
This year, the air meeting was held in honor of the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King of Thailand’s accession to the throne, and there were 9 aircraft from four different flying clubs that flew in for the event on the weekend of 8-9 July. Private flying has been growing rapidly in Thailand in recent years, thanks in no small part to the good regulations and promotion by the Thai Department of Civil Aviation. The activity is very popular in many Western countries, and Thailand is one of the most progressive countries in all of Asia. It is also a great country in which to learn how to fly because of the good weather conditions and the excellent airport facilities and flying schools.
Last year, the highlight in Dokkrai was high-level water bombing of a target with water-filled balloons. This year however, the competition was much fiercer, as the 4 clubs took advantage of the excellent croquet facilities in Dokkrai to face off against each other. The Chonburi Flying Club, Thai Flying Club, Eastern Flying Club and Dokkrai Flying Club took part in the competition with many diverse aircraft such as a CFM Shadow, a Zenair 701, an Airborne XT912, a Pegasus Quantum, a Qucksilver GT500, a Remos G3, two Ekolot JK05’s and a Polish Wilga all flying into the croquet competition. The competitors were from as far as Germany, United Kingdom, USA, Spain, Holland and Thailand.
Everyone agrees that it is highly unusual to find Fly-In Croquet tournaments anywhere else in the world, and this is perhaps one of the reasons that makes this event so unique. There was a very fine showing from Captain Tom Grieve and his Eastern Flying Club team, but in the end, it was the Dokkrai Flying Club led by their Captain John from Wales who captured the Dokkrai Fly-In Croquet Cup. It was indeed a fine event enjoyed by all.

It’s three in a row for Sunisa while the Kenyan men continue to dominate

The 12th Pattaya Marathon 2006

Pattaya Mail Reporters
Thailand’s very own Sunisa Sailomyen stamped her presence once more on the Pattaya Marathon last Sunday as she recorded her third straight victory in the women’s event. Sunisa was given a serious workout by the Russian and Japanese female athletes around the testing course but managed to put in a sustained burst at the 6km to go mark, which took her over the finish line first in a time of 3:10:12.

Cheered on by the large crowds, Kenyan athlete Julius Kiptum Rop crosses the line first in a time of 2:33:18 to become the 2006 Pattaya Marathon Champion.

In second place was Tatiana Perepelking from Russia who came home just over 1 minute behind in 03.11.37 and third place went to another Thai athlete, Phacharee Chaithongsri in a time of 03.13.51. Sunisa received total prize money of 158,000 baht for her efforts.
In the main event, the Kenyans once again dominated proceedings with all top three podium places going to athletes from the East African country. Taking the title of Pattaya Marathon Champion for 2006 was Julius Kiptum Rop who came home first in a time of 2.33.18, which also gave him the first prize money of 150,000 baht. He was closely followed over the line by compatriots Lucian Disdery Hombo in 2.33.26 and George Morara Inchero in 2.34.15. The fastest Thai runner was Bunchu Chandacha who came home fourth in 2.35.57.

The number says it all as three-time champ Sunisa Sailomyen poses for a photo following the presentation.

The Pattaya Marathon 2006 review and pictorial

This year’s Pattaya marathon was a thankful return to normality after the chaotic scenes that surrounded the start line at last year’s event. When the starting sirens were sounded this year to set the athletes on their way in the early hours of Sunday morning, July 16, all thoughts of the turmoil 12 months ago instantly evaporated as the participants looked forward to once more enjoying a slick, well managed Pattaya marathon event.
This race is becoming more and more popular as the years pass by and the number of participants taking part last weekend was estimated to be in the many thousands. The event was honoured by the presence of many international athletes, who now view the Pattaya marathon as a regular date on their competition calendar.
Also honouring the event were a gathering of dignitaries including famous sports personality and Deputy Tourism and Sports Minister, “Big Hoy” Thawatchai Sachjakul, Police General Sant Srutanont, Chairman of the Athletics Association of Thailand and Pattaya’s own Mayor, Niran Wattanasartsathorn, who was up with the larks Sunday morning to help keep an eye on things.
The Pattaya marathon is renowned as being a very testing course for runners and that means that the times that are recorded here in the 42km event are not what you would normally see from world-class athletes. Notwithstanding that fact, the race still attracts participants at the highest levels of the sport and the presence of the Kenyan runners year on year serves to demonstrate that fact.
For the lesser athletes in the field or ‘weekend warriors’, the combination of early morning humidity and the pounding on the hard asphalt of Sukhumvit Highway can sometimes prove to be too much, but a dedicated team of emergency service personnel were on hand, as always, to provide assistance to athletes in distress.
Thankfully the majority of the runners were able to complete the course in their respective events and will be happy to tell you that the Pattaya marathon is now firmly back on the road running map and its bigger and better than ever!

Mike cracks 43 points at Plutaluang

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday, July 11, Plutaluang - Stableford
This being a special day, the players gathered at Bert’s at the normal time, for breakfast, before leaving for Plutaluang, never to return. Well not quite never, but seeing as how Bert’s was closed for the night, it was decided we would partake of the goodies at the Plutaluang restaurant. We will return next week.
This course divides people into two groups - those who like it and those who do not. However, what can be said is that it has a 4 star nine holes and calls for a wide variety of shots. On the day we played South and East, and Tim for the first time enjoyed his round, another one fallen. Still all in all, the round went well.
Back in the restaurant, with a few of the ‘Navy Value’ beers in them, the mood was good as we declared the winners. In the A Div, 0 to 19, The winner was Mike Gaussa with 43 points, ahead of Fergus Brennan with 40 points and Dick Warburg with 34 points.
In the B Div we had a three way count back on 37 points, with Joel Flor winning, Peter Harris in second and Bernie Cairns in third. After some more of the fine hospitality, off we went home. Well not really but it sounds better that way.

Masashi makes his mark

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

Tuesday, July 11 was Buddhist Lent Day and therefore it was the turn of Noble Place to host the Pattaya Golf Society for its weekly medal event. The club offers outstanding value for money and the course and clubhouse facilities are being constantly upgraded. As a result a large field turned out to enjoy the day over the “A” and “C” nines.
The “Two Tommies”, David Thomas and Stuart Thompson soon found their way towards the top of the leader board again with a pair of net 73’s but this time they were joined by Len Jones and the trio were destined to take third place. Currently running hot is Ben Findon and another sub par round saw him post net 70 for a deserved second place. Good as this round was it was not enough to rein in Masashi Iizumi, the personable and popular Japanese golfer, who played his best round in the kingdom, recording a score of net 69, which even included a nine and an eight! His golf was “quality” from start to finish and marked him as the player to beat over the next few weeks.
The day’s only “two” was recorded by Stuart Thompson, on the long par three A2 and at the end of an extremely fine day Denis Smith received the Booby Bevy for a round which could have been so much better had putts gone in, trees been avoided and water hazards shunned. Well done Denis, well done all.
Kidd’s play
at Phoenix
On Thursday, the Pattaya Golf Society went to nearby Phoenix to play a Stableford event over the Lakes and Ocean nines and found the course crowded, making long rounds a real prospect. The course had been toughened up since the visit the previous week, with some teasing pin positions and the day was to be a testing one for the two flights, cut at twenty and under.
In a tightly contested division one, Harry Riley and Stuart Thompson both returned cards bearing 34 points and they took a share of third place, one behind Mikael Andersson whose 79 (35 points) was also the best gross of the day. The flight winner was Bill Hewitt with a level par 36 points.
In division two the return of two ladies after a long while had tongues wagging as Margaret Cunningham returned twenty points off the front nine and husband John was taking a keen interest in his protégé’s progress. Inexperience, however, caused Margaret to falter and she was joined on 29 points by Masashi Iizumi and Ray Underwood for a share of third place. Len Jones plodded to a level par score of 36 points to take runner-up place whilst the day’s only sub par round was recorded by Ian Kidd and his 38 points total was a just reward for his efforts.
Stuart Thompson and David Thomas shared the “twos” pot with their birdies on the Ocean par threes.
The organiser had a dilemma in deciding the choice of the Booby Bevy winner, seriously considering awarding it to the golfer whose round over the same track merely a week before had been a net 64, this one bearing only 17 points, but Margaret’s difference of 11 points between the two nines was the excuse that was needed to award the Bevy to a lady. After all the PGS’ proud boast is one of equality!

Khao Kheow proves a test once again

PSC golf from The Café Kronborg

Monday, July 10, Plutaluang - Stableford
The Royal Thai Navy Plutaluang North and South layouts were host for a Stableford competition in two flights, A Flight 0 to 16 and B Flight 17 and up.
Don Hendry took the A Flight with 37 points, Doug Maiko was second with 34 points on count back from Ted Morris. Dave Richardson took the B Flight with 34 points ahead of Ebrahim in second with 33 points and Alan Ewing in third with 29 points.
Thursday, July 13, Khao Kheow - Stableford
This course is one of the first on the schedule every month. Not only is it a fine course, it is also one of the top values at the moment. So, great course and great value, means a fine day out.
And so it was that after a gentle drive up, we stood on the first tee, and the B & C nines beckoned. Off we went and with a breeze swirling, the round promised to be tricky but pleasant nonetheless. The fairways were fine but the rough was a little soggy.
In the restaurant sampling the wares, the scores were pretty average, but on the whole good for a day at Khao Kheow.
The winner of the A Flight, 0 to 17, was Edwin Morris with 37 points, on count back over Donald Hendry in second. In third with 35 points was Derek Brook. In the B Flight, 18 up, the winner was Rodney Clarke, showing how the Aussies do it, (again) with 36 points. In second was Alan Ewing with 35 points and in third was Bernie Cairns with 34 points.

Barry the Bridesmaid

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, July 10
Noble Place - Stableford

1st Randy Haupt, 39
2nd Barry Winton, 38
3rd Peter Aitcheson, 36
Randy Haupt took full advantage of a smaller than usual field, due no doubt to the holiday and the lack of alcohol available attending the start of the Buddhist Lent, to post an excellent thirty nine points. On his way to collecting his first top podium position, he stroked his old clubs to his best round in Thailand. This was after nearly getting ripped off by one of the local shady, boot (trunk) of a car, club salesmen who was only persuaded to return most of his money after the Tourist Police were mentioned as Randy’s possible negotiators in the recovery process. It now looks as if he will stick with the old ‘uns’ until he wins enough to buy a proper set from a proper shop.
Barry Winton started off the week as he was to continue it by taking second place with a solid 74 gross and 38 points with Peter Aitcheson, recently returned from China firing one of his better efforts to claim third place.
Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingstone, the resident PGA teaching professional, welcomed back Markku Tynell.
There were no “twos” in either division and the pools were therefore carried forward.
Wednesday, July 12,
Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Tatsumi Noguchi, 39
2nd Barry Winton, 37
3rd Danny Poole, 34 c/b9 22
4th Barry Traynor, 34 c/b9 16
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new member Walt Straub and the returning Yukio Kikuchi and Tatsumi Noguchi.
Tatsumi spent little time getting his feet under the table as he swept into first slot by two strokes from Barry Winton, who again had to content himself with second place after another good round.
Danny Poole, who is improving by leaps and bounds following a course of massage sessions in Bangkok, beat off the challenge of Barry Traynor by taking the back nine apart. Which was no small feat over the usually tough to beat A and B courses.
There were no “twos” again in the first division but the huge rollover in the second division went to Chris Knapp with a fine effort on the third hole on A course, from an exquisite tee shot to two feet and a smoothie into the back of the hole. Chris was very generous with his winnings, buying a drink for the entire field and tipping the handmaidens that served them at least a weeks salary each, and then putting back the balance into the pot “because I only play infrequently and the prize should go to those that play every week” as he told the astounded throng after the presentations.
Friday, July 14,
Phoenix Mountain &
Ocean - Stableford
1st Brian Wilkinson, 37
2nd Barry Winton, 35
3rd Yasuo Suzuki, 34
4th Barry Traynor, 33 c/b9 17
5th Yukio Kikuchi, 33 c/b9 16
Having left Pattaya on the previous day to fly back to Norway and having the 800 baht taxi run out of fuel on the journey and then subsequently missing the plane, Brian Wilkinson took it in his stride, had a couple of words and a tip or two for the driver and started the re-booking process but was unable to get away until Friday evening. This gave him a perfect excuse to spring a total surprise return to the Haven which he had only just left the day before. Indeed the regulars were still drinking to his health when he reappeared. It was, therefore, somewhat fitting that he should be declared the day’s victor by the slimmest of margins over the now usual second place man Barry Winton, who rumour has it is looking for a good Indian dressmaker.
Yasuo Suzuki at last received some of the swag that he traveled all the way from Japan for, as he slid into third ahead of the count back between Barry Traynor and Yukio Kikuchi.
Before the presentation Richard welcomed new member Sally Cownie and the returning John Squitiero.
For an amazing third time there were no “twos” in the first division which was staggering, with Barry the Bear in such good form during the week. There were none in the second division once again as with the absence of Chris Knapp the standards slipped back to the old levels and the pot begins to grow once more.

The Japanese Invasion

IPGC golf from The Caddy Shack

Tuesday, July 11,
Sattahip - Stableford

Tuesday, and the Navy course at Sattahip was chosen as the venue for a Stableford competition over the south and east layouts. Some of the greens were a bit ‘fluffy’ but in general the course was in good condition.
Brian Clarke at last found a little form and managed to score 29 points but Keith Fortt went two better and took the top honours with 31 points. There were no “twos’ and the lucky ‘bananas’ were awarded to Steve Packer after his club flew into the water on East #2 and the caddy stripped off and dived in to retrieve it: (They were borrowed clubs and before you start getting excited, the caddy was male).
There is now a special prize for the worst score in the form of a ‘monster’ wedge, which on this occasion was given to ‘Big’ Ronnie, who now has to carry this around in his bag the next time he plays, (pity the poor caddy).
Thursday, July 13,
Green Valley - Stableford
Our second trip of the week saw us travel to Green Valley for another Stableford competition on a windy but pleasant day for golf.
The Japanese turned out in force with Mr. Suzuki returning 29 points whilst Tatsumi Noguchi and Ian Grout shared first place on 32 points. Ian also had the only “two’ of the day and the ‘bananas’ were again awarded to Steve Packer for falling in love (not with his caddy from Tuesday I might add), and failing to arrive in time for the transport to Green Valley.
Following the golf, the Japanese contingent treated the Caddy Shack to an exhibition of their own version of 9-ball pool, which included their own peculiar set of rules.

Record entries at 3rd Evason Phuket Raceweek

by Peter Cummins
With 10 days to the start of the first race, the Third Evason Phuket Raceweek is set to mark continued growth in Thailand’s only ‘Green Season’ regatta. “We have 32 confirmed entries thus far ahead of official registration day, so we are fairly confident that we’ll exceed last year’s numbers by at least 10 boats,” said organiser Andy Dowden, adding that there are always a few boats that just turn up on the day.
Raceweek 2005 saw 29 boats start on the first day of racing, in steady winds of 20 knots gusting to 25 knots. The event saw its share of drama, when one unfortunate boat sank after hitting an uncharted rock and another capsized in the strong winds. Thanks to the fast action of rescue teams, the crews involved suffered only minor injuries

Racing this year will take place over six or seven classes, with a high proportion of Phuket-built boats competing in the faster racing classes. The multihull racing class has two fast Phuket-built Fireflys (Moto Inzi and the brand new Chi Machine) lined up against Charro, X-Catriot and veteran racer Henry Kaye’s Australian-built The Sting.
Sports Boat Racing will see four locally-built Phuket 8s compete for the Raceweek trophy against the new Beneteau First Class 7.5, with a crack team from New Zealand being flown in to challenge the home grown talent.
The biggest fleet by far is the hotly-contested IRC class, with old faces from Thailand’s racing scene pitting their skills against newcomers. One as yet unconfirmed Raceweek entry is keen yacht racer Koravik (Wikkie) Nualkair, daughter of Octopussy and Ma Doo Si owner Viroj Nualkair. She is reported to be heading down to Phuket at the end of July with an 11-strong family team to take on last year’s IRC Class 1 winner Ruby Tuesday. The visually striking local boat Switchblade will be competing under the Max Marine banner this year, while Mike Bein is giving his new Suk San Song its first competitive outing.
David Lindahl’s always-competitive La Samudra, local legend Horst Lakits’s Big A, Stuart Crowe’s Cinders and regatta stalwart George’s Foose’s Free Wind line up with new face Chetak skippered by Jim Kane and Malaysian entrant BeauX Esprits.
The performance cruising cats will be well represented by Bob Mott ‘stable’ of regionally built aluminium boats and the trend for large multihull fleets seems set to continue.
Club class is growing slowly with three entries. Mostly crewed by live-aboard sailors, these boats tend to enter in the last few days.
Last, but by no means least, amongst the Raceweek participants is the Classic Class. The classic Danish schooner Seraph celebrates its 100th birthday with a special invitation race, competing against 4 other stunning classic boats: Kerida, Anjuna, Aumgaia and Sanook. This will be the first time in Thailand that five boats in this class have actively raced against each other, and should offer some collectible photographic opportunities.
Evason Phuket Raceweek presents a full week of international-standard yacht racing for a wide range of yachts - from the highly competitive top racers all the way to liveaboard cruisers and charter boats.
Based at the Evason Phuket Resort, the social programme will be 5-star, offering excellent catering & first-class entertainment - and very special low-season rates for luxury accommodation.
The weather in southern Thailand has been brisk in the last few weeks and the scene looks set for some great racing.
The sponsors line-up includes host Evason Phuket Resort, Raimon Land, a solid supporter of Thailand’s regatta scene, Big A Resort, Royal Phuket Marina, Lee Marine, Seraph Cruises, Phuket International Hospital, Electrical Marine, Phuket Inter Wood, Boat Lagoon and Sunsail.
The 2006 Phuket Raceweek will take place from 27 - 30 July. For more information visit www.phuketraceweek.com

National Rowing and Kayak Championships at Maprachan Lake

by Kurt Krieger
The weekend of July 8 - 9 saw the National Rowing and Kayak Championships take place at the Maprachan Lake, Pattaya. To the relief of the tournament organisers the lake is now back to its normal level of water after last year’s drought.

The Maprachan Team show off their medal haul.
Altogether some 230 participants from all over Thailand competed for the championships in eight different rowing and kayak categories.
The Maprachan Team under its coach, the multiple international gold medal winning Nigri Putaraksa managed to win six gold, five silver and one bronze medal. The very successful newcomer to this team is 13 year old Arisit Panwilas, who won a silver medal in the youth category (up to 18 years).

Roy romps in at Great Lakes

PSC golf from Oohsa Bar

Another day, another challenge as we met at Oohsa Bar before taking on the Great Lakes course and so after another great breakfast we went out to see what the day would bring.
We were pleased that the day was overcast as it was fairly warm anyway. We were also pleased to find the course in fair condition although the lie on the fairways proved a little tricky at times.

The top three soak up the plaudits back at the Oohsa Bar.
Showing us all how to master this was Roy Pimblett who was to be our winner with a creditable 37 points followed by Colin Cronin on a count back over Donald Hendry on 35 points. Rumour has it that Colin could have won if he had not been handicapped by wearing a shirt from another bar. Never mind Colin you’ll learn.
‘Nearest the pins’ were won by Donald Hendry, Mashi and the man with the strange shirt. The shirt man also won the longest putt award.
Back at Oohsa’s we again enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and were served by the friendly staff to an excellent mince and mash of very ample portions with many of our members stating that they would not need to eat again that day.
For more information regarding our future matches or your involvement please call Keith Hodges on 07-9167171. You will be made more than welcome.

Water? It’s all in the mind says Wendy

PSC golf from Peacock Place

Monday’s outing took us to Plutaluang for a Stableford round playing on the north and west courses. The winner of the Ladies’ event was the lovely Wendy Khan with a fantastic 40 points. I might add the lady in question was heard complaining before tee off that the west course was too hard as it had too much water for her. She started on the west course and had 22 points so Wendy, you sure showed us all that ‘water’ is only in the mind. Runner up to Wendy was Tong Pimblett.
The Men’s flight was won by Rich Murphy with a fine 37 points and the runner up was ‘Mr. consistency’ John Khan on 34 points. There was only one “two” on the day and that was from Capt Bob so he put the 750 baht on the bar and everyone had a drink or two. The free beer was won by Gil Bauche.
Captain Bob shines at Bangpra
Thursday we went to the lovely Bangpra course and as usual it was in magnificent condition, this is one of my favourite courses. The winner of the Ladies’ event was Wendy Khan again, playing off her new handicap, and the runner up was Su.
The winner in the Men’s Division A was Capt Bob with 39 points; second was a three way split between Ian Edward’s, John McKeon and Ken Little, all tied on 32 points.
B Division was won by Dave Mawford with 36 points whilst the runner up was another split between Roy Pimblett and that man again John Khan.
The only “two” of the day was, you guessed it, John Khan. Well done John, it’s good to see somebody having a good time and winning now and again.
When we got back to the Peacock Place the lovely Dao and her staff had a buffet laid on for all - it was delicious. Thank you Dao and Mike and Staff.
Next week’s schedule is in the Pattaya Mail (page 55). Anyone interested in playing can contact Bob on 07 941 2474 or call into the Peacock Place for a cold beer and put their name down on the sheet - all welcome.

Outside Influence

PSC golf from The Bowling Green

The course this week, July 6, was Green Valley at Rayong. The weather on the day was just perfect for golf. The course was in excellent condition: the greens fast and difficult to read.
Twenty-Five players took part this week in two flights including two ladies. Mashi Kaneta (Flight A) 38 points and Bobby Sutterfield (Flight (B) 36 points were top on the day. Three players made the “twos” this week - Mashi Kaneta, Joel Flor and Dave Arrowsmith with ‘nearest the pins’ going to David Arrowsmith, Derek Eastham, Tewin Lamthong and Joel Flor.
But the story of the day and one that I am sure will be told many times at the nineteenth hole has to be “Russell Whyte and the Dog”
Russell Whyte and his group had the pleasure of a visitor in their party. That of a small white terrier dog that followed them on the round walking with them to every hole. It was assumed that it probably belonged to one of the caddies. It had caused them no bother and seemed quite happy to sit at the side of every green and watch the proceedings. That is until the 16th hole (a par 3)
Russell had hit a good tee shot on to the green just some 25ft from the pin. He took instructions from his caddy on what line to take and made his play. The ball was travelling good and true and everyone present believed it was in the hole for a two. That is except the dog, who suddenly sprang onto the green and with the ball some twelve inches from the hole put his paw on it, stopping it dead and then casually walked off.
You can imagine the reaction from Russell and all present. The report on this is not suitable for print. A real case of “outside influence”
Results:
A Flight
1st: Mashi Kaneta (38), 2nd: Derek Eastam (36), 3rd: Terry Morris (35)
B Flight
1st: Bobby Sutterfield (36), 2nd Tewin Lamthong (35), 3rd Peter Johansson (35)
Barnes Wallace Bob
The course played on July 13 was Pattana. The weather on the day was as the previous week just perfect for golf. The course was tricky but fair. Approach shots at times could be difficult to hold and with many of the greens sloping with a hard surface but not particularly fast it caught a few players out. Twenty players took part this week in just the one flight including just the one regular lady player, Tewin Lamthong.
The winner with an amazing 48 points (H/C33) was Bob Sutterfield (Bob4You). Second place went to Gordon Everingham with 38points (H/C28) and third place to Mike Gauzza 36 points (H/C14). In fourth was Fergus Brennan with 36 points (H/C15)
There was no “twos” winner this week so the prize is being carried forward to next week at Treasure Hill.
The nearest the pins went to Bob Sutterfield, Fergus Brennan, Mike Wing and Mike Gauzza
The story of the day belongs to the winner “Barnes Wallace Bob”. At the 8th hole a 177yd par 3 he teed off and promptly used the water hazard for a “Barnes Wallace” shot (for those who are not British amongst the golfing fraternity) he skipped his ball across the surface of the water hazard to leave a chip to the green and then putted out for par.
This was the good fortune that shined on him all day. He remarked that it was the best round that he had ever experienced. The down side is that it will not do his handicap any favours.

Jeff makes his mark at Khao Kheow

The Jomtien Golf Society

Wednesday, July 12, Khao Kheow - Stableford
There was no meeting on Monday due to the public holiday, so on a cloudy and rain threatening morning we left Paweenas and made our way up highway 7, only to find as we neared the course blue skies and ideal conditions. The course itself and the clubhouse were deserted as we waited for our 10.30 tee-off time.
Another good turnout set off at a brisk pace, especially our ladies, who amaze all of us with their speed of play. Rick Smith playing off 14 came in with 36 points for third place, his first rostrum position in three months. A close second was the ever-improving Miss Amphan, who finished with four pars on the last four holes for a back nine score of 25 points and a total of 37 points. This week’s winner playing to a handicap of 15, (he never uses a wood only a driving iron) was Jeff Cargill with 40 points. He didn’t ring the bell as we had to get back to the bar as his wife was waiting as always.
The Jomtien Golf Society meets every Monday and Wednesday at Paweenas Soi 5, Jomtien Beach Road and departs at 9.15am. Transport is available as is club hire. Please call Glyn on 068375464 or sign up at the bar.

The Beautiful Game?: Italian Celebrations Short Lived

By Riz Taylor
The Pattaya Mail becomes a teenager this week as we mark our thirteenth birthday, but there won’t be much time for celebration as we continue to strive to bring you the news and views from Fun City. Let’s face it, scandal and controversy is never too far away in Pattaya.
Italy reigned supreme last week as they claimed the World Cup. The victory, their fourth, will be forever remembered in football history and quite rightly so. Yet even by its own standards Italian football, no stranger to scandal and controversy itself, is this week reeling from one of the biggest shocks ever to hit the so-called ‘beautiful game’.
Just two days after the final in Berlin, prosecutor Stefano Palazzi recommended that four of the country’s most famous clubs - Juventus, AC Milan Lazio and Fiorentina - be relegated from Serie A for their alleged part in a match-fixing scandal that looks set to have repercussions that will also send shock waves across Europe in the coming weeks.
This controversy, along with the ongoing saga of Zinedine Zidane’s dismissal, has managed to dampen the celebrations, stealing the headlines at what should have been a golden moment in Italian football history.
Zidane’s previous employers Juventus are at the heart of the allegations. The ‘Old Lady’ as they are known in their homeland, were embroiled in a doping scandal in the mid 90’s when club doctor Riccardo Agricola was found guilty of administering drugs to players in order to enhance performance.
It was during this investigation that officials phone tapped several senior members of the club, who are said to have been recorded putting pressure on referees to favour Juve in critical matches. In another transcript published by the Italian media, general manager Luciano Moggi was taped telling the vice-chairman of UEFA’s referees’ commission to appoint a friendly official for an upcoming match.
This, along with a number of other allegations, have led a sports tribunal to hand down the heaviest penalties seen in Italian football. Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina were thrown out of European competition and demoted to Serie B, whilst Milan avoided dropping a division but will also miss out on the Champions League and will start their Serie A campaign with a 15-point penalty.
But it was Juventus that were hardest hit. The Turin club were stripped of their previous two Serie A titles, and in addition to the demotion came a 30-point penalty that looks set to see them play second tier football for the next two seasons.
And the problems don’t end there. A number of the club’s players look set to jump ship in the coming weeks, a fact that has already alerted the rest of Europe’s elite. World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro is wanted by Real Madrid and Chelsea, Patrick Vieira by Inter Milan and Manchester United, and French team-mate David Trezeguet is being chased by Lyon. Gianluca Zambrotta is a target for Chelsea whilst Fulham, Spurs and Arsenal are linked with veteran defender Lilian Thuram. One thing is for sure - the sharks are circling this famous old club.
Not a fantastic time to be a Juve fan, then, but the club refuse to admit that a mass exodus is around the corner. “I have hopes that some of our most important players will stay,” said club official Cobolli Gilli. “It’s clear that we won’t sell off our players, they will leave with adequate prices. Who wants them must pay because we have the duty to defend the club’s heritage.”
“When a team is attacked, it makes them perform miracles,” said former World Cup winner Paulo Rossi after Italy’s win in Berlin. He should know, as it was the former Juve man’s goals that led Italy to their previous win in 1982 in Spain. Juventus will be hoping for a few miracles of their own in the coming years if they’re to help their supporters erase the memories of what is surely the most testing moment in the club’s 109-year history.
United’s Bargain Hunt
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking for a few inspirational signings if his side are to challenge Chelsea for this year’s title. Ruud van Nistelrooy should be a Real Madrid player by the time you read this, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo is also desperate to escape England.
Ferguson still has a decent squad but the loss of van Nistelrooy and the lack of a replacement for Roy Keane could prove disastrous if these positions aren’t filled by players of genuine quality. Wayne Rooney will be partnered by Louis Saha as things stand, but the return of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer had the Scottish manager salivating last week as the Norwegian turned back the clock in a friendly, scoring two goals against Orlando Pirates.
“When he took his first chance you just knew, being Solskjaer, that he was going to score,” Ferguson said. “There are very few players in our game today who you feel so confident about when they get chances. Sometimes forwards freeze in front of goal. Solskjaer warms up in front of goal; it’s the great natural talent he has. We see him as a very mature player, someone who scores goals given chances and someone who can play in a wide position with confidence. It’s a terrific option for us.”
United will watch developments in Italy as they look to strengthen their squad. “We’re working on several things and talking to several clubs. We have made several enquiries for several players but we have held certain things back because of the Juventus situation,” said Ferguson. “I think everybody will be looking at all the Juventus players. Vieira, Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram and Emerson are the ones that people will be focussing on,” he told United’s website.
Damien Duff looks set to sign for Tottenham in a 10 million pound move from champions Chelsea, with Spurs paying the Irishman three million more up-front to compensate for his expected drop in weekly wage. The transfer market has moved into top gear over the past week and we’ll look into more wheeling and dealing next week, plus report on some bizarre goings-on at Aston Villa. See you then.

No sour grapes for The Grape Vine

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

200 Bowlers - Teuvo, PK, Berry, Jan, Ooy and Tue

Grape Vine consolidated their position at the top of the league table after taking all four points from Shenanigans. Second placed House of the Golden Coin dropped three points to France, Café Kronborg dropped all four points to Friends with Ooy shooting 592, Brother D went down 3 to 1 against Three Sisters and Mai’s Thai Restaurant won three from Jack & Tar. Montana grabbed three from VFW Post 9876 while Café Olé had a clean sweep of all four points from Domicil.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed
There are times when it’s best to “cop a plea” for making a mistake, acknowledge it and then move on to making more mistakes.
I was convinced that IBF Super Welter Champion Roman Karmazin would not only defeat former champ Cory Spinks but do it with an easy dispatch. “Wrong again bucko”.
From the wire: “Entering the final round of the IBF jr middleweight showdown in St, Louis, Cory Spinks was narrowly ahead on all three official cards. Judge Melvina Lathan had Spinks up by three points, while judges Jerry Griffin and Manfred Kuchler both had Spinks ahead by one point. So if Roman Karmazin had managed to win round twelve, he would have retained his title by majority draw. The last round appeared to clearly be Karmazin’s round and both judges Griffin and Lathan saw it for Karmazin, however Kuchler scored the round for Spinks, giving the hometown hero the margin he needed for victory.”
So Spinks wins and ‘The Square Ring’ is wrong... Bummer!
A couple of weeks ago the Pattaya Mail’s sports quiz had the following question: “Which player recorded the first ‘live’ televised perfect 9-dart finish?”
Well I saw that and immediately wrote to most honored sports editor with the answer of my pal John Lowe. Back came an e-mail stating that I was wrong. The correct answer was “Shaun Greatbatch at the 2002 Dutch Open” as according to the answer it was “:live” on TV. I e-mailed most honored editor to say the question was “horsefeathers.” A sports quiz is to test sports knowledge not to prove who has no life and can spend time looking up some obscure fact that no one but the questioner gives a “horse’s hinny” about.
The real meaningful record is that John Lowe tossed the first recognized 9 dart game and the second was tossed by long time pal Paul Lim on January 9th, 1990 during the Embassy World Championships. Readers and dart players in the kingdom, they do exist, may run in to Mr. Lim as he’s visits the Land of Smiles often as a representative of Medalist Asia, a company that makes and sells dart machines and playing equipment. Shaun Greatbatch my foot!
Chances are that maybe there is some good stuff coming up in the world of boxing in the months to come. Among the potential highlights is the second season of ‘The Contender’ which switches over to ESPN. Some are arguing that the list of “boxers” is not up to the level of year one. Time will tell, as will pal OR Cross, the “official” critic of ‘The Contender’ in the kingdom.
It’s been made official that Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales will meet for the third time on Sunday November 19. I love it when the “promoter” talks like we really care what they say. From Buffalo Bob Arum we get, “Pacquiao and Morales each own a victory over the other in their two previous fights - both considered “Fight of the Year” candidates - which have attracted over 700,000 pay-per-view buys combined.”
First off why should the reader care what the PPV audience is? Secondly, ‘The Square Ring’ would like to point out that an Ultimate Fighting Championship telecast last week did more business on PPV. Then there’s the ridiculous bout with 37-year old Axel Schulz coming out of a 7-year retirement and 62-year old ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier fighting the 65-year old Mayor of Memphis Tennessee.
There were lots of chances for Thai boxers to take the international spotlight last weekend. Currently the international star that’s shinning the brightest is jr. welterweight Amir Khan of the UK. He got another win on his record by stopping Colin Bain in 2 rounds. Khan is now 8 and 0 with 6 KO’s.
As is too often the case when Thai fighter travel they do so with a satchel full of excuses to explain their under achieving performance. Poonsawat Kratingdaeng Gym (24-0) was undefeated and should have loved fighting the equally undefeated Wladimir Sidorenko (18-0-1). They met on the undercard of the Strum - Castillejo fight. Poonsawat got blown out 120-108, 116-112 and 115-113. It was a sorry performance on the world stage.
In retrospect though, it wasn’t as bad as the performance of Sod Looknongyangtoy against Daniel Ponce De Leon in Las Vegas. Last year De Leon had to go 12 rounds to beat Looknongyangtoy. Last Sunday morning it only took 52 seconds of the first stanza. “A straight left knocked Looknongyangtoy out cold, collapsing face first spectacularly to the deck.” So much for the world stage!
The Color Line Arena in Hamburg was “chocker block full” to watch WBA Champion and hometown guy Felix Strum defend against Javier Castillejo who many thought was over the hill. That “over the hill” mentality came because of a lackluster performance last August against Fernando Vargas who looked terrible against Shane Mosley. It was Strum who was in for a surprise as Castillejo came out firing, knocking Strum down in the second. Castillejo moved in to finish the job but Strum fought back. He survived the round that was stopped 10 seconds early by referee Mark Nelson.
Strum was able to stay away until the 10th. Castillejo tried to apply more pressure in the tenth round, and he hurt Sturm on the ropes with a left hook, three consecutive uppercuts and a left hook to the body. Sturm never went down, but referee Nelson jumped in to stop the fight.
Like a fine wine or a good cigar maybe Sugar Shane Mosley (43-4) is getting better with age. Last Sunday in Las Vegas he took every round through 5 before knocking out Fernando Vargas (26-4) in the sixth. Vargas was dropped in that round by a Mosley left hook. When he had trouble getting up to beat the count of ten referee Kenny Bayless called it off. The time 2:38.
This loss should write an end to Vargas’s career which started so promisingly and is ending up as a pathetic sideshow. While I didn’t see the fight as it was PPV, the dependable one (not to be confused with the Depends One) Pattaya’s O.R. Cross did and writes:
“Lets have a tall cool one to celebrate Mosley’s beautiful left hook that ended that trash talker’s night in the 6th. Did you listen to your mother’s advice when you were a fighter? Mosely certainly did what his father told him and it was the finish to what I thought was a great boxing lesson. Bob Sheridan was pretty good with his pronunciation of Sod’s last name. The pronunciation lasted longer than Sod did and Sheridan told Dave Bontempo that he knew how to say it because he had spent a lot of time in Thailand. I know you two are cocktail pals, so ask him if he ever spent any time at the TQ and if he knew your lady friend who went by the name of Noi, Tik, Da or Wow.”
Noi, Tik, Da or Wow? That ought to narrow it down.
Great fight next Sunday from Atlantic City when Arturo Gatti (40-7) defends his WBC welter title against Carlos Baldomir (42-9-6). Forget Baldomir’s record he is one tough cookie.
Himself: “Jeeves what is with the party hat, smoking jacket, flute of champagne, noise maker and five layered cake?”
Jeeves: “I received a communiqué from Mr. Pratheep Malhotra the Managing Director of the Pattaya Mail. He informed me that this issue of the Pattaya Mail celebrates the 13th Anniversary issue and perhaps I might like to write a few words. As you know your Lordship, I don’t write but I do love a good party.”
Himself: “So Mr. Pratheep Malhotra sent you a communiqué?”
Jeeves: “Not really your Lordship but I saw the note when checking your e-mails while you were out relaxing. Do you remember the first issue?”
Himself: “I remember it well. Now 13 years later one can write, ‘You’ve come a long way baby.’ Might I suggest that you fetch me a tall cool one, a cigar and I’ll join you in a toast to the Pattaya Mail. Way to go.”

The ‘Bunker Boys’ mourn the passing of an old friend

PSC golf from The Bunker

Monday, July 10,
The Emerald -
Stableford

A Stableford competition was played at the Emerald Golf Club on Monday and with the cut at 16 and under we had a close run contest in the A Flight with Roger Privett coming out on top with 38 points, one point ahead of Mashi Kaneta on 37 points, who was himself five points ahead of third placed Geoff Parker who finished with 32 points.
In the B Flight Dave Lightfoot came third with 31 points a point behind Granville Swanton in second place with 32 points and the winner with 35 points was Nile Sheehan.

John Preddy - 1939 - 2006 (RIP)
Near pin prizes were shared between Mashi Kaneta, Mikita Homma, Paul Edgar and Dewey Augustson.
Wednesday, July 12, Bangpra - Medal
A Medal competition was held on Wednesday at Bangpra and with a relatively small field we saw Granville Swanton and PJ Redmond tie for second place both with net 74, one shot behind today’s winner Paul Smith who finished with net 73 playing off a handicap of 5.
Near pin prizes went to William Macey, Mick Ramshaw, Brian Bellis and Tony Geeland.
Friday, July 14,
Treasure Hill -
2 Man Scramble
A two-man scramble at Treasure Hill ended the week and with a good turn out we saw a close match develop between three pairs. William Macey and Granville Swanton had to settle for third place with 38 points, one point behind Geoff Parker and Mick Ramshaw who claimed runner-up spot with 39 points. The winning pair by just one more point were Paul Smith and Dave Lightfoot who came home with 40 points.
Only three near Pin prizes were won as the long par three second hole eluded everybody so prizes went to PJ Redmond, Mick Ramshaw and Roger Privett who took great delight in getting inside William Macey to win the other one.
In Memory
Golf with the Bunker Boys was overshadowed this week with the sad news that one of their best known golfers died. John Preddy passed away on Friday July 14 after a short illness
John was one of the longest serving members of The Bunker’s golf society and did a lot of work on the organising committee and will be greatly missed.

Clive proves to be too hot for the Phoenix

PSC 60th Member’s Open, Phoenix
‘The King is dead, long live the King’, or so was the general thought as the new Golf Chairman, Mike Gerrard, gathered his team together for the long year ahead, and their first monthly tournament.

‘Low Gross’ winner Clive Robinson collects the top award of the day.
Whilst it takes time to imprint your personality on these occasions, nobody who knows Mike believes he will be backwards at coming forward. He is after all, a ‘Professional’. Best of all he has promised not to sing, but that promise could be broken pretty soon. As the last team, who did a sterling job, would have said, “Follow That.”
The new ‘era’ started at Phoenix Golf Course, with a sign in, with the Gerrard/Benda team booking the players in most efficiently, and Tim on the course telling all the players where to tee off. Tim likes telling people where to go, and with his big label as Marshal and a cart, who can argue. He certainly kept the flow going well all day. I saw him tell groups to get a move on or they would incur his wrath, and they got a move on.
The test for the day was to be the Lakes and Ocean nines; both were in fine condition with manicured fairways and fast, tricky greens. The weather also chose to co-operate. Both nines were peppered with near pins, long putts and long drives; so many people could have a chance of a prize.

Ladies ‘Points’ winner Prakong Robinson with Mike the new Golf Chairman, right, and Gerry the PSC President.
With the round finished the scoring team were waiting as we entered the clubhouse, and pounced to get the cards in and start the results sequence. Tony Oakes and Vince Smyth were hard at work and whilst they toiled away, we all lounged in the hot showers and then went up to the banquet room.
Very quickly the results were ready and Mike made his first presentation as Golf Chairman, in which he praised the last Golf Committee for all their hard work, thanked those who were set to help him this year and all the sponsors who have rallied around, namely McAllisters, Shennanigans, Tropical Bert’s, Diana Group, Tahitian Queen, Harley Bar, Bowling Green and P.S.C. To those I’ve missed, apologies and I will get you next month. He also thanked the management at Phoenix, who helped him out.
Mike then passed the spotlight over to the new presenter, or Emcee, Nigel Cannon who proceeded to call out the winners, who were in turn presented with their trophies by Mike and The President, Gerry Carpenter.
In the Ladies Section the winner of ‘Low Gross’, and in fact most points, was Ploy, with 42 points and Gross 74. In the actual Stableford Competition, the winner was Prakong Robinson with 40 points, just ahead of Saen Jaroenwong on 39 points.
The Men’s competitions were split into A & B playing Stroke and C & D Stableford; this is a normal monthly tournament system.
An so in The A Flight the top Men’s prize was the ‘Low Gross’ and this was won by Clive Robinson with a gross 78. Clive tries to tell us he went home to visit the family, but the truth is he went on a golf course, I think! The ‘Low Net’ was won by William Clive with a net 68 ahead of Mike Morris, also net 68, on count back
In the B Flight the winner was decided by a three way count back, all on net 68, with Perry McNeely winning, Anders Farstad in second and Chris Knapp in third.
So to the players of Stableford, I suppose the C & D have to have some perks. The winner of the C Flight with 41 points was Per Olan Baarli, ahead of Terry Curtis who had 39 points, with Richard Warberg into third on count back. In the D Flight, or those with most improvement possible in their game, the winner with 38 points was Izzy Freedman on count back from David Headington, with Willy Celis on 37 points in third.
The presentation was carried out with speed, allowing the players to depart into the dusk, after a most successful day for the new Golf Chairman and his team, and the players escaping without the normal requirement of a Mike Gerrard Song.
