Eastern Indoor Sports Stadium ready on time

OCA committee gives go ahead after survey

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

Construction of the Eastern Indoor Sports Stadium is close to completion.

Olympic Committee Asia (OCA) members from 26 countries surveyed the facility last Monday, giving the go ahead for the stadium to host the inaugural Asian Indoor Games.

The 5,000 seat Eastern Indoor Sports Stadium is 95% completed and ready for the inaugural Asian Indoor Games scheduled for November 12-19.

During the survey of the building and the grounds, Chatuporn Na Nakhon, OCA branch president for Thailand led the international members on the tour of the Soi Chaiyapruek 2 complex. All agreed that the 5,000 seat stadium would be ready for the event.

The stadium stands at over 95 percent complete with only the sound and lightings systems to be fully installed and checked before the official hand over.

The first Asian Indoor Games is due to be held in Thailand from November 12 – 19 in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket hosting a variety of events. The majority of the indoor athletics will be held in Pattaya.

Athletes from 40 nations will participate in the Indoor Games with the latest countries added to the list being the Maldives, Iraq and North Korea.

Final details of when athletes arrive and event schedules over the 7 day competition are yet to be finalized and will be made public closer to the event.

Locals cram the field for 5th Nongprue Cup kick off

TV Stars vs VIP’s opening highlight

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

Hundred of players and spectators swarmed the pitch for the start of the 5th annual Nongprue Cup last Saturday. Held at the Central Sports field, Soi Nernplubwan the main attraction was the exhibition match between TV Stars team and the Nongprue VIP team.

Nongprue VIP team player, in red, attempts to pass through the TV Star defence line during the exhibition match held at the opening ceremonies of the 5th Nongprue Cup last Saturday.

The Stars team led by Kong Sittiporn Niyom and Hut Siwwong took on the VIPs led by RS Matthew Dean, Louis Scott and Bogie. At the start of the opening whistle, spectators’ young and old cheered on their favourite TV stars and artists through the match. To ensure nothing got out of hand over 100 police volunteers were on duty to keep a close eye on crowd control.

Sontaya Khunplome, advisor to the prime minister presided over the opening of the event, which will run until October 30.

“Nongprue is a district that has developed its sporting prowess and promoted sporting events among the area’s youth and general public. We are honoured to have many guests, TV personalities and stars to attend the opening ceremonies and help further sports among the community here today,” said Sontaya in his opening speech.

Teams competing this year include Police FC, Military, Telecommunication Organization Thailand (TOT), Bangkok Bank, Bangkok University, EGAT, Chonburi FC and the Coke Football Club from Bangpra. Each team is vying for a share in the 160,000 baht prize pool and trophies on offer.

‘On fire’ Geoff Parker shoots 65 at Bangpakong

PSC Golf with The Bunker

Bangpakong
Country Club -
Monday September 19

It was an early start on Monday because Bangpakong is a good distance away, but for many of the Boys from the Bunker they don’t mind the extra travel to play the course. It’s always in great shape and a good test of golf. The week started with a medal competition and Geoff Parker was on fire, shooting a net 65 to capture an easy victory.

It’s hard to tell when Granville Swanton has a bad golf game because he always is smiling.

Stephen Davies came second with net 70 and joint third place honors went to David Johnson and John King who each shot a net 73. Near the pins were won by Eddie Martin and Fred Griffin.

Eastern Star Country Club – Wednesday September 21

Wednesday’s event was a stablefore competition. The day belonged to Bryan Route by returning a score of 42 points. Eddie Martin was a distant second with 37 points and Sonny Ruthsip rounded out the top three with 36 points. Near the pins were won by Bob Turner (2), Eddie Martin and Geoff Parker.

Burapha Country Club – Friday
September 23

The only problem with this great course is that you have to use a buggy, and most of the Boys from the Bunker prefer to walk. The competition was medal play on a very windy day. The best scores were 75 for Fred Griffin and Granville Swanton who shared the honors. In third place with net 78’s were J.J. Harney and Bob Turner. Near the pins were won by J.J. Harney (2) and Trevor Sharman.

The Bunker Boys are located on Soi Chaiyapoon (near X-zyte disco and across the street from Tony’s Disco II). Monthly golf schedules are available or consult the Pattaya Mail every week.

A couple of old dogs up to old tricks

IPGC Golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday September 18,
Green Valley, White Tees
Stableford

1st A Flight: Jim Brackett, 42 pts
2nd A Flight: Phil Mitchell, 40 pts
3rd A Flight: Mike Allidi, 38 pts
1st B Flight: Ken Graham, 41 points
2nd B Flight: Chicka Smith, 39 pts
3rd B Flight: Peter Emslie, 39 pts
1st C Flight: Brian Prudden, 39 pts
2nd C Flight: Dave Porter, 39 pts
3rd C Flight: George Jackson, 39 pts
2s: Jim Brackett; Mike Allidi; Jim Munns; Julian Clarke (2); Terry Wagner; Jan Eriksen; Brian Prudden

Well the first of our entitled ‘Old Dogs”, Jim Brackett was Man of the Match with 42 and co-medalist on the day (with Flipper) with a gross 74. Jimmy has returned for one of his many vacations to the Land of Smiles, and as is usually the case, it takes a couple weeks of acclimation and work with his swing coach, Sir Richard Livingston, to round into form. It appears that period of adjustment has been effected. The aforementioned Flipper saw his gross 74 provide 40 points and second place in A. 2 handicapper Mike Allidi tidied up the premier division.

Dublin’s Kenny Graham left George “Chicka” Smith, the half scrum from Downunder, and the venerable and omnipresent Peter Emslie to a count back as he took the top rung in B Flight Chicka’s score was found to be more favorably distributed than Peter’s

Brian Prudden, tired of constantly hearing wife Marlene’s name hailed to the victory podium, put his foot down and prevailed on a four-way count back to take the top step in the junior Flight. Dave Porter, deprived of the top rung, still showed his taillights to One-Ball Jackson, who was a far cry happier than Dene Airey who was left satang-less at sea level.

Tuesday September 20,
Laem Chabang, C & A
Black or White Tees, Stableford

1st Blue Flight: Terry Durkin, 33 pts
2nd Blue Flight: Bill Collis, 32 pts
1st White Flight: Rick Sharp, 39 pts
2nd White Flight: Seamus Brennan, 35 pts
3rd White Flight: Ed Melott, 35 pts
4th White Flight: Jim Brackett, 34 pts
2’s: Blues: Bill Collis; Claus Birk Thomsen; Serge Staeten; Whites: Rick Sharp; Terrry Wagner; Bill Gneiting

With Low Season waning, the boys are getting ready to bid farewell to the masterpiece of Jack Nicklaus as it will start to show a “Yen” for the Island People and looks forward to seeing which peninsular people “Won”.

Another Old Dog, and one who never gets too melancholy about such things, is the Hermit and he showed no respect for the White Tees as his 39 points was best on the day and the top spot from the short tees. Shameless Brennan came second, whilst Hawaii’s Ed Mellott racked a third. The other Old Dog, Jimbo Brackett, racked up the rare fourth place position (What was he doin’ on the short tee? Oh, I know, camaraderie!)

In the Bomber Flight, Terry Durkin, who along with his wife Denise was playing their final round, took the top spot with a modest, but understandable 33 points, on the most difficult permutation of Laem Chabang’s three courses. Dhaka’s Bill “The Fish’ Collis followed Terry up the Blue podium.

Wednesday September 21
Khao Kheow, Yellow or White Tee
Stableford

1st Yellow Flight: Ray Dell – 40 points
2nd Yellow Flight: Rusty Barfield – 35 points
3rd Yellow Flight: Phil Corbin – 34 points
1st White Flight: Brian Prudden – 33 points
2s: Yellow: Colin Davis; White: None
Non-2: Ray Dell

During the Dengue Fever induced absence of The Golf Manager, the Old Scribe filled in, calling on those tools he had o’ so many years ago. In so doing he queried the Nicest Guy in the World, if Ray “Farmer in the” Dell wanted in the 2’s comp. The NGitW said, “No, he never gets a 2!” And so it was that Ray Dell, the days Yellow Flight Winner with 40 points was not there to share the 2’s pot with The Donkey. Rusty “Already has a Nickname” Barfield took second in front of a triumvirate of Phil Corbin, Mike Allidi and Pete Casiano. Hawaiian Phil bettered Hawaiian Pete and Swiss Mike on count back.

Brian Prudden, a Young Guy, took his second first of the week over a small but spirited duo.

Friday – September 23,
Phoenix, Lake & Ocean
Blue or White Tees, Stroke/Medal

1st Blue Flight: Phil Groves, net 76
1st White A Flight: Rick Sharp, net 67
2nd White A Flight: John Hillier, net 71
3rd White A Flight: Phil Corbin , net 72
1st White B Flight: Roger Koehler, net 68
2nd White B Flight: Ken Graham, net 68
3rd White B Flight: Marlene Prudden, net 69
Near Pins: #L7 – Roger Koehler; #O5 – Robert Sellick
2s: Blue: None; Whites: Jim Brackett; Jim Munns; Roger Koehler

The Scribe was lamenting the loss of Laem Chabang in the High Season and he is feeling consternation regarding the latest published High Season fees of today’s venue. Hopefully those concerns prove misplaced. In any event, a good sized field enjoyed the constantly improving, and nearby, Lake and Ocean Courses of Phoenix. No one enjoyed it more than one of the Old Guys, The Hermit, who was best on the day in White and winner of the A Flight with a net 67. The NGitW took second with net 71 followed by the leader of that merry band of Hawaiians, Phil Corbin. Roger Koehler bettered the Dubliner, Ken Graham, on count back for the gold in B Flight of White. The better looking half of the Prudden Clan copped the bronze.

Big Phil Groves survived a three-way count back with Rusty Barfield and Stuart Thompson to take the only step in the Blue Bomber Division.

Devonshire and pleasure dome are still tied at the top as both won their match and beer legs. Mark of Devonshire came close to a league leading high check but fell one short of team mate Stan with a nice 115 check. Cheers hosted OK Corral and had a very eventful evening. Donna had a nice 2 dart 75 finish with 25-bull. Cheers had a few to many and loaned OK their two publicans and wives. None won a leg, but Pon checked the beer for OK! Jason, who had helped stop Cheers from being whitewashed a couple of weeks ago, was the only Cheers player to lose this week (to a girl!)

Terry Phurrs round Pattaya

Golf with The Caddy Shack

Tuesday September 20, the golfers from The Caddy Shack travelled to Burapha Country Club with anticipation on playing a medal round. We were met with a very hostile reception, with staff demanding 300 baht extra on the green fees. Their reason was that our group never amassed 25 or more golfers. The manager was called and he would not budge from this issue, so a unanimous decision was made and the group of twenty golfers decided to retrieve their clubs from the first tee and make their way to Pattaya Country Club.

We were not going to give in to this attitude as it just means we all pay more in the future. We arrived at Pattaya Country Club and were checked in very smoothly and them making the 30,000 baht fees instead of their neighbour course was a feather in their cap.

The golfers were split into two divisions with the cut made at 17 and under. As usual, Tuesday is a medal round and in division two Paul Smith and Ben Findon shot a round of net 75 to share 3rd place. The division 2 winner’s spot was shared by Les Hall and Ken Kutzing they both managing a net 70.

In Division one PJ and Emmet White put in a net 73 round apiece but way ahead with a super round of golf was Terry Phur with a net 65 round. Rumour has it he learnt a few shots from Keith last week in the Superstars matchplay.

Tthe two’s were shared by Terry Phur, Bob Philp, Rob Heath and Phil Smith. The bananas were awarded to the manager of Burapha but he never turned up at the presentation, they were given to Les Hall as it was his birthday. He was overcome with happiness on this gesture and rushed up to the bell in The Caddy Shack and rang it in celebration.

The Caddy Shack always puts all golfers in the hat for a lucky draw and Glynn Evans was the lucky winner and won a 3 course Sunday lunch.

Thursday September 27 the golfers left The Caddy Shack for a midday tee of at the immaculate Mountain Shadow golf course for a stableford round. Two dozen golfers arrived and were again split into two divisions with the handicap cut being at 16 and under.

In Division two, Les Hall and George Hudson shot 30 stableford points but the winner was Steve Davies with 32 stableford points.

Division one had Phil Mitchell and Steve Nowell with 34 points each but way ahead on the day was Paul Smith with 40 stableford points, off of his 7 handicap. At the presentation back at The Caddy Shack he was given a nice round of applause.

The two’s were shared by Paul Smith, Norm Robinson and Steve Davies. Their was no doubt of the direction of the bananas as Mark Joshua smashed his 3 wood in a rage after 4 holes. The lucky draw prize was won by Steve Davies.

All golfers are welcome to come on Tuesdays and Thursdays we leave at 11a.m. for a midday tee off. The Caddy Shack is on the second part of Soi 17 (same road as the Harley Bar).

Simon Philbrook wins the Paul Cremin ‘Scud’ Trophy

Mike Franklin

Wednesday, September 21 - With Paul celebrating his 40th Birthday, Simon Philbrook shot a gross 71 and 43 stableford points to win the Paul Cremin ‘Scud’ trophy on the Burapha Crystal and Dunes nines. Playing off a 6 handicap (5.6 actual), Simon continued his fine form to win by a single point from Glen Tyler. Glen also carded an excellent 43 points but lost on the count-back

Scud presents the trophy to winner Simon Philbrook (right).

Newcomer Jeremy Watson scored 40 points off his 18 handicap to take third place and it took another count-back to decide who was fourth. John Hall (8) and Mike Gerrard (13) both scored 38 points and the count on the back-six gave John the fourth place win. Near pins were claimed by Tira Charuvastra, Rich Wibrow, Mosquito (mahogany cabinet) Bill, and Jeremy Watson. The longest first putts were sunk by Eddie Dunbar and Dennis Edmunds. Only the C & D courses were open and therefore quite busy but marshalling is good at Burapha and the JIGS field of 32 players moved well.

Back at Jameson’s there was the inviting special of Irish Chicken Tikka Masala and the banner aloft for ‘Scud’s’ 40th Birthday bash.

Newcomers to JIGS were duly welcomed, namely Roger & Betty Koehler, Grant Sandilands, Dennis Edmunds, Mike Gerrard and Jeremy Watson, and it was a warm welcome back to Matty Swire, (on dry land for a month).

We are back to a Pairs Scramble (stroke) on Wednesday October 5 at Plutaluang playing South & East. To take part, either sign up in Jameson’s or send me an e-mail. Hope to see you then.

Dennis opens his account at new venue

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

The switch to a new venue elicited a good turnout and some hot and heavy action throughout the day. Pattaya CC has turned out to be better than expected for our competitions as the rates are right and the course is in good shape. Evidently Dennis Willett liked it as he shot a 34 off the stick on the front nine. Faltering a bit on the back, he still managed 41 points to win the day. Great shooting Dennis!! Just a shot back of Dennis was Trevor Carnahoff. Trevor was having a tremendous day, so the story goes, until he six putted a hole. Six putted!! No one could believe it. With three putts he would have won the day by two strokes. I wonder if the putter is still in his bag?? Phil Taylor also had a good day as he came in with 39 points. Following Phil with 38 points each were Wayne Koch and Ken Mau. All good scores but not enough to carry the day.

After missing a few sessions in the cellar Paul Donahue reappeared with the bag. Paul has been braving the scene and holding his own the last couple of weeks but as fate would have it, he fell back into the cellar with 20 points. Bob Benda, who has not been playing well for the last couple of weeks managed to stay out of the cellar. Bob shot 24 points, a long way from where he normally sits in the pack. As we all get used to the new course, things are bound to change.

Three Sisters and VFW Post 9876 move into a tie for second place

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

Mai’s Thai Restaurant increased their first place lead as they took all four points from Cafe Kronborg. Three Sisters and VFW Post both moved into a tie for second place after winning three points from Shenanigans and House of the Golden Coin respectively. Meanwhile, Friends won three points from Grape Vine and Cafe Ole took three from Domicil whilst Jack & Tar got two and one half points from Brother D in a closely contested match.

200 Bowlers – Ooy and Dang.

Best bowlers of the day were:
Ooy, Cafe Ole: 204 and 209 games – 561 series
Dang, Friends: 204 game – 539 series
Lance, Spare Bowler: 539 series
Nual, Cafe Ole: 532 series
Udom, Cafe Ole: 513 series
Lenz, Mai’s Thai Restaurant – 511 series

Vince and Nigel show the way at Century

PSC golf from The Grapevine

Thursday, September 29 saw the golfers from The Grapevine heading up 331 to the Century Chonburi golf course for a stableford competition. Of the 19 players, for most it was a non-adventurous trip – but for eventual winner Vincent Smyth and his 2 cohorts, Barry and Philip, it was a trip of wrong destinations and wrong turns. Eventually making it to the course, Vincent was able to put his misadventures behind him to score a strong 39 points to show the way. Runner-up on the day and in a patch of good form was Nigel Cannon with a solid 37 points. With a smaller than usual field of 19, the technical prizes were spread around with near pins being picked up by Mike, Keith, Paul, Jim and Tom, while the long putts went to Jeff and Nigel.

Nigel, Da, Praw, and Vincent.

Back at The Grapevine, after our repast of spring rolls and noodles (very tasty), all golfers agreed that another good day had been had. New golfers to The Grapevine were welcomed heartily and were unanimous in their enjoyment of the day.

If you are looking for a game on Thursdays, come down to The Grapevine and sign up. We organize transport if required and a good day is assured. Cheers and good golfing. (JW).

Casiano first time winner

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

Tuesday, September 20th

- At the height of the rainy season the Pattaya Golf Society from the OK Corral decided to test conditions at the excellent Green Valley course, near Rayong. The format was medal and the field included two newcomers to the OK Corral, single handicappers Rusty Barfield and Pete Casiano. On a cloudy day, a well set out and surprisingly empty course ensured a relaxing day with some fine performances.

The day’s best gross was recorded by the aforementioned Pete Casiano, his fine 78, (net 70) promoting him to the top of the leaderboard after the deduction of his eight handicap. His two-under par performance was a model of consistency with ten pars and only one double bogey and it gave the amiable American the top honours of the day. Pre-tournament favourite Chaten Patel found himself locked head-to-head with Harry Cowling and there was nothing to separate them at the end except the time between their respective playing groups. They had the honour of sharing third place with creditable net scores of 73. One of the only two ladies playing the event, Ya Chaiyanont, showed her fine driving style with ‘poetry in motion’ tee shots that relegated her partners’ drives to the status of something more like ‘limericks’. She posted an excellent level par net 72 to take second place despite carding a triple bogey on the second hole. Elsewhere Ken Graham captured the day’s only birdie two to scoop the pool, yet again!

A fresh faced Ciano Glavina chose the wrong moment to attend the presentation ceremony and make the first mention of the game of cricket. The chirpy “Italian/Aussie” received the Booby Bevy as some form of consolation for the recent, historical sporting events in the UK...and he hadn’t even played!

Helgarson unstoppable at Mountain Shadow

Thursday, September 22 - It was the turn of Mountain Shadow to host the weekly stableford tournament for the PGS and the course and management did well in preparing for the event. The warm welcome, courteous staff and sumptuous golf course were an absolute treat and the large undulating greens, unique in the province, were extremely quick. It took a while for the players to find their putting stroke but there were to be three excellent performances on the day. Both Bill Hewitt and Ken Graham recorded scores of 37 points to share second place but they were blown away by a returning Kristinn Helgarson whose 43 points is a PGS record for this season. Nor was it a fluke, as he produced a consistent 22-21 split on a course he had not visited for more than a few months. Harry Cowling, Rob Dolan and Texan “Dirty Jim” Wilson all managed birdie twos with Rob finding the fifth hole directly from a bunker! It helped to make his otherwise dreary card more acceptable.

Back at the OK Corral Len Jones had already targeted an unwitting recipient for the Booby Bevy but a rare “cock-up” at the presentation meant he savoured it himself! It was agreed that the challenge of Mountain Shadow had provided an enjoyable day for all, none more so than the smiling ‘Scandi’ himself, Kristinn Helgarson.

Nigel Cannon ‘storms’ to victory in the rain

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Noble Place,
Tuesday September 20, Stableford

- Well, didn’t it rain Noah, and they say the reservoirs are empty!! It all started off so well with a normal meet at Bert’s for ‘brekkers’, then off last as I let the slow drivers get a start. A leisurely drive up Route 7, right turn at Sriracha, left turn at Route 331, and there you have it, Noble Place in all its splendour. On this day when we set off, it looked a little grey but it was still a nice run till we hit the diversion on Route 7, then the Heavens opened, and I mean opened. It poured down, the worst I have ever seen on the way to a golf course. The roads were deep in water. All the way up to route 331 it was a curtain of rain and when we turned left onto 331 it got worse. Still we decided to complete the journey and have a cuppa, then come back.

Nigel Cannon (right) with Bert, Pu and Bob (left).

At the course I left the clubs in the car as it continued to pour down and walked inside to see wall to wall golfers waiting to tee off. I had forgotten, ‘ No Rain Check’ and indeed talking to one or two of the other drivers I found that those who had left 15 mins early, and come up route 331, had missed the rain entirely. The place was ankle deep in water, but surprise, surprise we could take a cart on the path. Soon it slowed to a drizzle, and those who had already paid, went to the B Tee, whilst those of us with clubs in the car, sighed and followed suit. As we drove off, the conditions were still far from ideal but after a few holes the rain stopped, the sun came out and by the time we neared the end of B course, the ground had drained and it turned into a great day. Of course the rough was difficult and the greens slow, but we could get by.

Back at Tropical Bert’s, hot food was waiting and Bob did the presentations to an easy winner in Nigel Cannon ahead of a second placed Stuart Thompson who got the nod over Derek Brook on count-back. A day that started so stormy finally ended in peace at Bert’s as the players settled back to sample the amber nectar. T.T.F.N.

Winner: Nigel Cannon; Second Stuart Thompson

Near Pins: Marty Allred, Frank Pilkington, Nigel Perry, Nigel Cannon (2), Thong Pavoinen, Derek Brook, Stu Hamsted

Long Putts: Bob Noble, Max Matthews, Marty Allred, Nigel Cannon.

Shake up in the shadows

52nd PSC Members Tournament

 Friday September 23 Mountain Shadow

Well, this was always going to be a real toughie, this being in the minds of all sensible golfers, the toughest test of golf in the area. It was always going to need a bit of luck and a well played round to win the ‘top’ prize of the day, the ‘Low Gross’.

A & B Gross winners receive their trophies from Chris John (center), PSC golf chairman.

In the last few Tournaments the ‘man’ has been Jeff Wylie and indeed he was in at the shake-up this time, but a 10 on his card saw him beaten on countback by Clive Bruce, both having a gross 81. Well done Clive, but watch out, Jeff will be back.

Last Friday, 118 golfers signed in to test themselves against this most difficult of courses, in the knowledge that if they shot their handicap they would be in at the shake up.

C & D Flight winners.

The course was in excellent condition, with manicured fairways and the fastest greens of the season. On the fairways all was fine, get off the short turf and the trouble started. Hit the ball into the trees and if you found it, quite often it stays up the tree, you have a horrible shot out. Here it does not favour the brave.

Tales of horror filtered back; Jimmy Flanagan went in after nine as he got lost in the woods, Kenny Mao had a 12 on a par three and Alan Pearce on a par 5. Other golfers kept their heads down, if you look at the winning scores with 118 playing, it will give you some idea of the fine play of the rest. As for the scribe, I found an excuse not to play. Lack of moral fibre.

Ladies flight winners.

In the A Flight the Winner of the Low Gross was Clive Bruce, on countback as said, with a gross 81. The Low Net was won by Erik Antonnin wit a net 73 and Second was Paul Smith with a Net 74.

In the B Flight the Low Gross winner was Paul Taylor with a Gross 89. In the net, the low net was won by Jean Paul Michel with a net 71, ahead of Dean Airey with a net 76 in third. He actually won on countback but I shall not prolong the agony.

In the C Flight we go into the realm of the Stableford. The winner was the President, Gerry Carpenter, with a fine 36 points. I say fine as one must look at the remainder. In second with 32 points was Gordon Ramsay, and in third with 30 points was a very surprised Herb Schweiterman.

To the D Flight, the winner with 34 points was Bengt Vinterskog, but only on countback over Arnet Skorge in second. In Third was Gordon Everingham with 33 points,

There were some good scores in the ladies class with the Low Gross winner being Moon Schwulera with a Gross 92. The high points was a score out of the average, in fact most impressive. The Winner was Beth Lill with 43 points, 6 shots better than anyone else on handicap. I suspect ‘Manuel’ is looming as she also had a couple of fine rounds at Tropical Berts. Sometimes it is difficult with a new golfer to see their potential, but I am sure she will come down fast. In second was Saen Jaroewong.

When the results were in, Chris John, PSC golf chairman, thanked the sponsors, Shenanigans, Blue Parrot, Harley Bar, TQ, McAllisters, Diana Group and Hot Shot Bar (Ploy ), and his team.

Next month it is requested all sign up at the PSC clubhouse, and it was also announced that a trip is planned to Phuket, 8, 9, 10 October, when amongst others, The Blue Canyon will be played. It is expected that the cost will be about 13,000 baht. Check with Alan.

Presentation over, all departed for the trip back, and another fine, long day drew to an end. T.T.F.N.

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Monday September 19 Mountain Shadow Stableford

A fine turnout of some 32 competitors departed the Cafe Kronborg headed for Mountain Shadow, buoyed no doubt by the prospect of a round of golf on what many feel to be the best course in the area at the present time. The course as usual was in excellent condition and on arriving at the first green it was apparent that unless you had the short game of a genius this was going to be a tough day. In fact the difficult pin positions and lightning fast greens conspired to make one or two of us look a little foolish. We watched in dismay as our seemingly good putts rolled at least ten feet past the hole. This is also a course where accuracy from the tee is a must as the sheer volume of well placed trees ensure that a wayward tee shot is duly punished and as if that were not enough to contend with, an extremely stiff breeze on the day added to the challenge. As it turned out the scores in general reflected the unforgiving nature of the course as many succumbed to the difficult greens. As we all know however, quality always shines through and in this case it was four handicapper Marty Allred who prevailed to card a tremendous 38pts taking the A flight.

Marty Allred

Tony Scrambler came in second with 36pts whilst Jeff Wylie, 34pts and Rusty Barfield, 32 pts finished third and fourth respectively.

The B flight scores where not quite so good but no less creditable given the degree of difficulty with Aussie Barry Kerr, 33 pts taking the honors followed by Rowley Morris, 32 points in second and Alec Backlund claiming third spot on a count-back from Kevin Dinan, (both 30 points).

Thursday September 22
Phoenix
Stroke

That time is almost upon us when the ‘winter’ high-season green fees start, so it was no surprise when a full list of players signed up to play Phoenix one last time before the expected price hike. The day started cool with some expected showers when  the first players set off for a test on the Lake and Ocean courses.

Rusty Barfield

The two courses looked in fine condition but they played ‘long’ and with greens like Velcro, it was difficult to get the ball to the hole. The winner of the A flight was Sonny Crawford with a fine net 68, with Monday’s winner Marty Allred 3 shots back in second with a net 71. Dave Askew came in third with a net 74 on count-back over Rusty Barfield. In the B Flight James Strang won with a net 69 ahead of Ebrahim, net 72 and Nigel Perry on net 75.

The Beautiful Game?: Chelsea run away with It

Riz Taylor

As dictators across the world will no doubt agree, shovel enough propaganda down the throats of your listeners and, eventually, many of those people will be inclined to agree with your thoughts.

The world of football journalism has gone into overdrive in the last fortnight as writers jump onto the passing bandwagon that continues to gather pace. The subject? The Premiership, and whether it has become ‘boring’. The debate began in the broadsheets but within days tabloids, websites and even radio shows were dominated by the subject.

The relentless discussion that only serves to further highlight the league’s deficiencies will surely make some supporters think long and hard about whether they’re wasting their time and money by attending matches. But perhaps it’s about time.

Commentators who make their living from the game are daring to bite the hand that feeds them by suggesting that the Premiership bubble has burst. The reasons behind falling attendances and supporter apathy have been dissected at great length, and explanations vary from boring tactics, loutish behaviour from players, enormous ticket prices and even Chelsea’s dominance thanks to limitless supplies of Russian cash.

All are valid arguments. Jose Mourinho’s undoubted tactical excellence at Stamford Bridge is undeniable, and after a weekend that saw Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all drop points, some are suggesting that the title race is all but over before the end of September.

Chelsea’s safety-first brand of football is supposedly boring the rest into submission. But Blues fans seem to care little, and who can blame them? Saturday’s narrow win over a spirited Aston Villa was their seventh in a row - a record Premiership start.

More worrying is the trend of many teams to pack their midfield and use their energies to stifle the opposition rather than venture forward in numbers. British football has traditionally been based on attacking at every available opportunity, but the emphasis now appears to be on making money rather than picking up silverware. As recently as ten years ago it would be unthinkable to hear managers tell the press that they’d be delighted to come fourth. Or seventeenth, for that matter. Now it’s an almost daily occurrence – staying in the Premiership and on the gravy train is the uninspiring Holy Grail for most clubs.

A perfect demonstration of the negativity that now punctuates England’s foremost division came from the champions of Europe last Saturday. Prior to Luis Garcia’s second half opener against Birmingham City, Liverpool had managed only one goal in more than four hundred Premiership minutes. Rafa Benitez, surely aiming to challenge Chelsea for the league title, deployed Peter Crouch as a lone striker against a team that the European Champions should be looking to destroy by several goals. Only with the introduction of Garcia and Djibril Cisse did the goals materialise, but Birmingham deservedly managed to force a 2-2 draw. Liverpool visit Chelsea on Sunday for the tie of the weekend, but don’t bank on a festival of goals.

Even more damaging are the ridiculous kick-off times that are imposed on clubs. Middlesbrough, for example, will kick-off at the 3 p.m. Saturday slot favoured by supporters just once in the first half of the season. Is this fair on the fans? This Saturday there are just four fixtures at that time, and Sunday breaks all records with the first game, Manchester City versus Everton, kicking off at 11.15 a.m. Perhaps it’s time that the money obsessed Premiership was forced to take a long, hard look in the direction of the supporters who, whilst being milked dry of their cash, are also forced into travelling at inconvenient times to satisfy the TV bosses.

If the game as we have come to know it really is on the verge of collapse, which is highly unlikely anyway, is that necessarily a bad thing? Perhaps it might bring back the cavalier football that so many of us love. It’s just a thought.

Chelsea’s winning start takes the record from Newcastle United’s 1994/95 effort under Kevin Keegan, who promptly buckled under pressure applied from Manchester United. The league desperately needs a challenger to emerge from the mediocrity and take the fight to the London club. More likely is that they’re aiming for the glory of fourth place.

Woodgate has a Real Mare

Spare a thought for Jonathan Woodgate, who finally made his Real Madrid debut last week after a fifteen month battle with injury.

The former Leeds and Newcastle defender lined up in the star-studded outfit as they faced Athletic Bilbao, but quickly scored a spectacular headed own goal after stooping to block a Joseba Exteberria shot. Then, in the 65th minute, Woodgate received a second yellow card and was sent off!

“I couldn’t believe it. I went to try to block the ball and it just skimmed off my head. It’s one of these things that can happen but I will come back stronger,” said Woodgate. “Obviously I didn’t want to score an own goal so it was not the best start in the world.”

“I want to thank the public, who were brilliant when I was walking off,” he added. “They were all clapping and cheering. I just can’t believe I got sent off. I didn’t think the second yellow card was right, you know, but it’s the referee’s decision.”

At least the 20 million Euro signing made it through the game without any recurrence of the problems that have seen him sidelined since his arrival. “Physically I felt good,” he said. “My leg was no problem and I felt strong.”

Fergie loves scousers

Sir Alex Ferguson won’t be winning any awards for diplomacy after suggesting that teenage sensation Wayne Rooney has a “chip on his shoulder” because he’s a Scouser.

At a supporters’ club meeting, the United manager was asked about the temperament of his star forward, and made the amazing remark that was later jumped upon by the national press.

“Rooney’s from Liverpool and everyone from that city has a chip on their shoulder, so if an injustice is done to him on the pitch, of course he is going to react,” said Ferguson at the supposedly confidential meeting. A senior United official claimed that the remark was “clearly in jest”.

New season approaches for Seaboard FC

Next Saturday sees the start of the MBMG Bangkok Casuals Football League and Pattaya will yet again be represented by Seaboard FC. This will be only their second season playing in this league but after finishing a creditable fifth last season they are looking to do even better this time around. New players have been brought in to strengthen the squad during the close season and with the return of last season’s player of the year Danny Stevens from Hong Kong, Seaboard FC can look forward to the challenge ahead.

Seaboard FC at the end of last season’s successful campaign.

This season the league will comprise of 14 teams kicking off on October 1 and going through to May next year. Seaboard’s home games will be played as last year at Horseshoe Point with away games being played in Bangkok at Patana School. Kick off time for the home games is 4 p.m. and it’s well worth a visit to Horseshoe Point on a Saturday afternoon to cheer on your local side as they take on the many international teams that make up the Casuals League.

For their opening fixture Seaboard FC will have to travel to Bangkok to face the Scandinavian Vikings, a side which they did the double over last year. This will be followed up with a home match against the German All Stars at Horseshoe Point on October 8.

Seaboard FC have been fortunate enough to secure the sponsorship of Four Winds International Movers for the coming season and would like to thank them for their support.

Anybody who could be interested in joining Seaboard FC, whether your stay in Thailand is for a long or short period is more than welcome to come down to the football pitch in Naklua every Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. or contact us at [email protected] or call Peter on 01 810 1470.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

There are some things that are silly for no other reason than they are silly. Sunday’s contest between Antonio Tarver (23-3) and Roy Jones Jnr. (49-3) is a case in point. First there is no title at stake as both are coming off losses. Secondly and more importantly neither boxer is usually involved in exciting contests on purpose. Sometimes their opponent gets in the ring and a fight breaks out but not often. The funny thing is that cable giant HBO has never realized that the Yank boxing public won’t pay a farthing to see Jones do anything. He’s a boring fighter and an even “worser” public speaker. He is a fraud. Tarver is just your usual, ‘big mouth no action’ fighter. The press has a love affair with Jones that borders on a stalking mentality. This fight was hastily conceived to counter James Toney’s (68-4) return against Dominick ‘Smokin’ Gunn (25-2) and the IBF title match between Champ, Chris Byrd (38-2) and DaVarryl Williamson (22-3). The winners of these two will probably meet early next year.

In the weeks leading up to Tarver-Jones the following appeared in a number of newspapers; “Rumours that Roy Jones Jnr. has suffered a hand injury during training for his upcoming title bout against Antonio Tarver appeared to be confirmed by his actions during a charity basketball game.” So if you read this on Friday September 30, 2005 and the fight has been delayed due to ’injury’, remember you read it here first. The ‘injury’ will of course be a total lack of ‘sells’ for pay-per-view and the fact that if the fights go head to head with boxing on ‘almost free’ tv, HBO will take a bath. Might not be a bad thing. They could do with some cleansing.

Looks like Joe Calzaghe, on the mend with a hurt paw, will have to hope that ’Left Hook’ Jeff Lacy (20-0) gets by Scott Pemberton on November 5 or his dreams of a super fight will disappear. The Lacy-Pemberton fight will take place at beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada among the towering pines, majestic ski slopes and the sounds of slot machines. Lacy signed for that fight to keep busy while Calzaghe’s on the shelf. Can Pemberton beat Lacy? You’re joking, right? Lacy is the IBF super middle champ and Pemberton ranked number #1 by the WBC. Why would they fight...for the money? The IBF has ‘no one’ ranked either 1, 2 or 3. Why? This is boxing. Pemberton’s claim to fame is that he twice beat Omar Sheika.

At least Lacy had a ‘plan B’. Old Floyd Mayweather Jnr. doesn’t even have a ’plan A’. He’s been offered $3.75 Million USD to fight Joel Cassmayor, November 19 in Memphis Tennessee. Problem is that no one can find Mayweather Jnr. Al Hayman, who serves as Mayweather’s advisor says, “I have had a problem contacting him.” Ok Al, here’s the deal. The first thing to ‘advise’ the little jerk about is “get a phone.” When this fight falls through Mayweather has nothing on the drawing board until 2006. Boo Hoo!

While it lasted, seven rounds to be exact, the Miguel Cotto (25-0) WBO jnr. welter weight title defence against Colombian Ricardo Torres (28-1) was a dandy. In the first two rounds the fighters exchanged knockdowns. In the 3rd Cotto started to use his left hook to the liver in a way that would have made Hannibal Lector proud. In the 4th it was a body shot that decked Torres and the same in the 6th. The 5th went to Torres who scored big with power punches. The 7th saw Torres for the last time when he was counted out at 1:52. Great fight!

Wladimir Klitschko (45-3) fought a gutsy professional fight against previously unbeaten Samuel Peter (24-1) getting a 114-111 unanimous decision. Very seldom will you see a fighter, in this case Peter score three knockdowns and lose a fight. It happened on Sunday on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. Peter was out on his feet when the final bell rang after being “befuddled” by Klitschko who executed the ‘Emanuel Stewart game plan’ to a ‘T’. Hit, hold and run.

Last week I wrote, “I’m sure you rushed out to get this week’s Pattaya Mail to find out if Prawet Singwancha (26-2-1) beat Jun Pardena (3-3) or how Saenghiran Lookbanyai (13-0) did against Joven Jorda (14-22-3 on Wednesday at the Pattavikorn Market in Bangkok.” Well the response was astounding. Nothing, Zero, Zip, Nada! Regardless, I will forge ahead with the results; Singwancha got a unanimous decision in six over Dominador Arabrio who had no previously recorded professional fights. But wasn’t he supposed to box Jun Pardena? Yep…This Is Thailand! Saenghiran Lookbanyai KO’d Jordas in 3. Bet you didn’t know that Lookbanuyai was ABCO fighter of the year 2004? Yep, true fact. Now for some results not from two weeks ago but new stuff.

This stuff is up-to-date. WBA #1 super-bantam Somsak Sithchatchawal (44-1-1, 35 KOs) kept his highly valued PABA at 122lb stopping Almaz Assanov in 6 stanza’s. WBO #1 light-fly Kaichon Sor Vorapin (17-7) scored a fifth round TKO over Filipino Ricardo Albia who stretched his losing streak to 8 in a line. Jr featherweight Fahsung 3K Battery (48-8-1) got a 4th stanza KO over outgunned JoJo Arnado (14-11) at Kanchanaburi, (near The Bridge Over the River Kwai). Old 3K just keeps on ticking

There’s an old saying in America, “Go West Young Man.” As a promoter, Oscar De la Hoya has turned east and four Thai boxers couldn’t be happier. On October 29 in Tucson Arizona, Oscar is presenting four WBO title fights all featuring Thai fighters. In no particular order; Johnny Gonzalez (29-4) will defend his bantam title against Ratanachai Sor Vorapin (64-8), jnr. bantam title holder Fernando Montiel (31-1-1) gets Pramuansak Phosawan (28-0-1), the jnr. fly title is on the block when Hugo Cazares (21-3-1) steps in against Kaichon Sor Vorapin (16-7) and last but not least Daniel ‘Fountain of Youth’ Ponce de Leon (26-1) gets a tough test against Sod Looknongyangtoy (25-0). In case the subtlety escaped you, it’s Mexico against Thailand, (mano e mano). The card at the Desert Diamond Casino has tickets from $25 to $100 USD. Heck of a deal and ‘Way to go Oscar’.

Not living in Land of Smiles 24/7 I don’t get to watch much cricket. Actually I get to watch none. That’s a shame because nothing is more pleasurable than sitting down in front of the telly with your eyes closed for 6 hour’s of cricket from some land where the men are men and the camels scared to death to say nothing of the sheep. I have a new hero in cricket player ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, who, I quote “is towering over cricket at the moment. Arguably the world’s best all-rounder and maybe, eventually, among the best ever, he has been an inspiration.” Well he is for me. He was recently honoured by being ‘given the keys’ to his home town, Preston, England. He told the BBC, “That means I can drive a flock of sheep through the town centre, drink for free in 64 pubs and get a lift home with the police when I become inebriated. What more could you want? A boxing column in the Pattaya Mail. “I’ll drink to that.”
