An Englishman takes the crown on Independence Day

Independence Day Tournament, July 4
Phoenix - Mountain & Ocean

The 10th Independence Day and Richard Livingston’s 62nd Birthday tournament was played as usual at the Phoenix Golf Club over the Mountain and Ocean courses where the conditions were found to be almost perfect with little wind although the greens were a little on the long side which gave much comfort to the less able putters.

With the conditions so easy, it was surprising that the nearest the pins on two holes in the 3rd division were not won but possibly the pin positioning had a lot to do with those results.

Independence Day Champion Jack Mosely (left) receives his trophy from birthday boy Richard Livingston.

The Ladies Division was headed by Banjob Franklin who took her first win for several months albeit by a countback from Mam Trayling, who had the same points over the eighteen holes but could not match Banjob ‘s fantastic 22 points on the back nine.

Paul Hartley continued his good run of form to take the 3rd Division by a couple of shots from Larry Ball just ahead of Peter Johansson on count back.

In the second Division, Richard Wardell having lost the Champions prize by a very close count back, had to be satisfied with winning his division with the terrific score of 43 points with Stephen Ellison a further 2 strokes back in second place.

A very old friend of Richard, Cameron Radford came out of hiding after several years, with an unrecognisable handicap of 14, which some people said he bought at auction on E-bay for a huge sum of money (undisclosed), to slide into first place in the 1st Division by two from Martin Grimoldby.

Barry Winton, returned the best gross of the day to receive a trophy from Richard.

In the battle for the best gross prize Barry Winton led a three way count back that had to be taken over the back 9, 6, 3, 2, 1, and the front 6 and 3 before being declared the winner over Jack Mosely and Martin Grimoldby, which made up for what for him was a mediocre performance which he hoped to better later in the week.

Jack Mosely made it a sad day for America apart from the separate celebrations being held over there, as he took the Championship Trophy to keep the run of victories by non “Septics” going for a further year making ten in all and taking the course apart with an incredible seven under to belie his recent form in the usual weekly competitions. A fantastic effort duly rewarded.

Back at The Haven, following a heart rending rendition of Happy Birthday, Richard with tears in his eyes possibly due to the pain from his new teeth, and thankfully not having any difficult names to pronounce, presented the prizes to the winners.

Before presenting the prizes Richard thanked the Roy Thornton, Len Jones and Steve Donovan for their assistance with promotion, Wayne Ogonoski for scoring and Stephen Beard, for generally running around as if his pants were on fire, once again overseeing most things and obviously back to full power at least off the course.

He also thanked Lumyai and her staff for once again producing what must be of the best buffets in town, which seemed to go on forever with a continuing stream of refills from the kitchen. A new addition to the menu, tartar sauce, proved to be the star of the show, with the chef having to whip up an extra two gallons after the crowd started baying for his blood as it ran out the first time after a few minutes, the word having swept round the room like wildfire.

As usual a top quality golf shirt was provided to all entrants, which meant everyone went home with something, apart from a full stomach, to remind them of a great day golfing with their friends and a celebration two important birthdays.

The Semple team tops the Ocean Marina’s monthly racing

Peter Cummins, Pattaya

The undisputed Platu keelboat champion team, following their win at the Coronation Cup last month, continued on their winning way last weekend at the monthly Ocean Marina Keelboat and Catamaran Fleet racing.

The winning team - (l to r) Morten Jakobsen, Neil Semple, Olaf Schoenicke and Marcus Maher. Absent from photo, Stewart Ross.

Neil Semple, Morton Jakobsen, Markus Maher, Olaf Shoenicke and newly-aboard, Stewart Ross, with three straight wins, beat Alex Skaria’s team, with Gary Baguley closing the Platu-dominated first three places.

Fourth was John Vause, piloting Bill Gasson’s “Buzz 8”, David Bell’s Fremantle 8, “Pink Pussy Cat”, before Brian Hume’s Platu appeared in sixth place. Pascal Leray was seventh and Khun Aey’s Platu, had the place of honour at the end of the fleet.

Sailed in ideal conditions, with southerlies around 10 knots, moderate seas and generally fair conditions, the weekend’s racing and social events at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomtien, were highly successful.

This Sunday, a number of the Ocean Marina craft will join the Royal Varuna Yacht Club’s annual Prince Bira memorial event - one of the longest races on the racing calendar.

Cafe Ole took three points from Domicil behind Ooy’s 235 game and 575 series.

Easy for the league leaders

The Jomtien 8-Ball Pool League

Week 14 saw no significant changes in the standings but in what increasingly looks like a race for second place behind the runaway leaders, the challengers drew closer together.

With their unbeaten away record, Simple Simon was expected to give top of the table San Snack Bar a tough match when they traveled down to Soi Welcome. The 7-2 result to San Snack Bar says it all. SSB extended their winning streak to twelve matches and their lead in the standings to six points.

Because of on-going renovations, Hide-A-Way played their scheduled home match against Lucky Bar down in Soi Welcome. Hide-A-Way may rue that decision as their hosts showed no generosity with a 6-3 victory. The win sneaks Lucky Bar back into the top half of the table and Hide-A-Way’s loss gives SSB a little more breathing room at the top.

Country Club went next door to Woaw’s Pub and with a close 4-5 win, and some thanks to Hide-A-Way’s loss, reclaimed the share of second place in the standings that they lost four weeks ago.

Rose & Thistle improved their position with a 4-5 win at S&N Palace. It was easier than the score suggests, as Rose & Thistle were 2-4 up at the break and won the first doubles match. With their sixth 5-4 defeat, S&N must be wondering when their luck is going to change.

In other matches; in Soi 5, Paweena’s rearranged the lower order standings when they defeated their Soi 4 neighbours Moonshine 6-3; in Thepprasit Road, Bolaget entered the Twilight Zone and continued their dismal form with a 2-7 loss - Twilight Zone breaking their seven match losing streak.

Next week San Snack Bar goes to Twilight Zone and, considering their current form, will anticipate not too many problems. Who is going to stop SSB?

More dosh for Josh

IPGC golf with The Caddy Shack

Tuesday July 5th had the guys from the shack travel to Green Valley for a medal competition. Conditions were windy and very tricky, starting on the first hole was a daunting prospect another large field was split into two divisions with the cut at 16 & under. Division 2 had Neal Hughes and Mr Loy sharing 3rd spot with net 77, Les Hall on 74 and Clark Alexander leading the way with 2 under par 70.

Mark Joshua played well but also collected the bananas from Mr. Loy.

Division 1 saw Sam Fitzsimmons firing 75 with Brian Jacks level par 72 but eclipsing everyone was Mark Joshua with a stunning gross 77 net 67 to take the huge pot. There were no two’s again & the bananas were awarded to Josh because his group fell 4 holes behind the field. Back at the Caddy Shack the return of Scottish Superstar Angus Macfarland (The Horse) was welcome and he kept everyone entertained with his one man band.

Thursday July 7 saw the boys go to Eastern Star for a stableford competition on a perfect day for golf. The scores were very good and the large field was cut at 17 & under.

In division 2 Ben Findon took 3rd place with 33 points Philip Jacks 2 sec with 34 with the ever improving Rob Heath on 42 - get the knife out Mr Loy. Division 1 had Terry Phur and Mark Joshua joint 2 second with 36 points but Sam Fitzsimmonds just pipped them with 37 the triple rollover twos were shared by Sam and Jan Eriksen. The bananas were awarded for the second time this week to under the cosh Josh as his group had to let very high handicappers through because of there slow play.

All are welcome to play at the Caddyshack, just turn up on Tuesday July 19 at Siam Country Club or Thursday July 21 Sattahip - before 11 a.m. and transport is arranged. The Caddy Shack is situated on soi 17, South Pattaya (same road as Harley Bar).

Ball on the ball again

PSC Golf from McAllister’s Bar & Grill

Friday July 8
Century Ban Chang
Stableford

Rumor has it that anyone who is keen enough on the game of golf to build their own four practice holes in their own back yard is attempting to improve his game. This is the case with Larry Ball as he stepped up to the podium in first place once again. No champagne seen flying around as in F1 and MotoGP but at this amateur level a Heineken or two will have to suffice, albeit that it consumed rather than being dispensed upon all and sundry.

Missing a few noted early birds this week the group actually teed off at somewhere closer to the appointed hour of 08:00 as opposed to the 0 dark 30 preferred by the groups planning to be back at McAllister’s in time to claim their appointed seats. It was later clarified that some simply cannot stand the pace in Banchang during the evening and still front up for golf the next morning.

As it turned out if we had all gotten off half an hour earlier we could have avoided being drenched by a sudden storm that blew in. This was a storm not a rain shower and it really came down hard causing a couple of early retirements from the arena. Unfortunately some scores were affected in a negative fashion by the same event. Who said those early birds didn’t have a good plan in mind?

Back to the aforementioned winner for the week, Larry Ball pipped Dennis Willet on count-back with both scoring 39 points courtesy of a very fine back nine performance by Larry. In third was Graham Hiskett with 38 points later discovering that he had not kept himself up to date on his handicap, which had risen by a shot. However, the card had been signed and submitted so the result stayed.

Next week will be a non-event for McAllister’s, as the majority will be joining the PSC for the 50th monthly members tournament. All will be back to normal come Friday the July 22 and newbies are welcome if the can arrive at Century Banchang somewhere close to 0800 and check in with Dennis at hole number one.

Many thanks go to Don McAllister as always for the excellent repast and the lucky door prizes that were highly appreciated by those who never seem to get anywhere near the winners circle.

More next week.

Happy Birthday Roy

IPGC Golf from The Haven

Wednesday July 6
Phoenix Mountain/Ocean
2 Person Scramble

Following hard on the heels of Richard’s birthday celebrations (see separate report), it was Haven golf manager, Roy Thornton’s 50th bash and he chose to hold a 2 person scramble over the same Phoenix Mountain/Ocean layout, so all those who played on the 4th July Independence Day celebrations had a distinct advantage of how the course would play!

A great day for everyone, winners and non-winners alike, who all enjoyed some superb scores, some great golf and in scramble tradition - great fun! Memorable rounds, particularly from Barry Winton and our host Stephen Beard. How fantastic for everybody to see Stephen back on the golf course for the first time in 18 months following his serious illness and how fitting that he should be a winner! Great credit to Barry for teaming up with Stephen and we can assure you that the “doc” played his part to the fullest. What a fantastic round by Brian Wilkinson & Dean Airey and who will ever forget “Deano” getting on the green at Ocean 9 with driver and 5 iron! A great feat, a great score and a great win!

At the end of the day however, a huge thank you to the birthday boy, Roy Thornton, for all his hard work and generosity, top quality golf shirts, cash prizes, super trophies and a magnificent buffet dinner that all made for a day that many will remember for years to come.

Special thanks also to Richard Livingston for emceeing the presentation and to Lumyai and her staff for taking care of everybody so well and for the scrumptious food which was devoured by all. As a final note, it was very fitting and kind of Roy to award the Ladies trophies and cash prizes (there being no ladies taking part) to Wanicha for her assistance in the admin and to Lumyai for the buffet. Much to Stephen’s surprise and horror (?), Lumyai rang the bell to celebrate, put the 1,000 baht prize in the tip box for the staff and handed Stephen the 2,000 baht tab for the round of drinks! Well done Lumyai, well done Stephen and especially, well done Roy!

Friday July 8
Eastern Star
Stableford

1st John Teague, 40 pts
2nd Barry Winton, 38 pts
3rd Barry Traynor, 36 pts - c/b3 8
4th Bob Lindborg, 36 pts - c/b3 7

Inclement weather indeed! Soon after teeing off, the sky darkened and the storm hit Ban Chang. As the wind grew to a force 6 and the rain lashed down, the hardy Haven golfers continued their round virtually without a pause and once again, the Brits felt comfortably at home and swept the board! John managed to compile his best ever back 9 shooting a fantastic 42 gross for 25 points which gave him a grand total of 40 points for a great win in dreadful conditions. Chasing close behind, Barry Winton, also enjoyed a great round, shooting a superb 74 gross to net him 38 points on a day when he would normally expect to take the honors. However, his disappointment was tempered as he hit the only “2” of the day to scoop the double rollover Division 1 pot and Barry was seen celebrating in some style in Ban Chang and well into the night back at the Haven. Those other Haven stalwarts, Barry Traynor and Bob Lindborg also played extremely well on a difficult day and as both scored 17 points on the back 9, were only separated by a countback that went to the last 3 holes. Hard on their heels was yet another Brit, Brian Kelly, whose 19 points on the back was just a tad shy for a podium placing! However, despite the weather, the course was in great condition and the large turnout enjoyed a memorable day’s golf. Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston, now complete with a comfortable fitting bottom denture firmly fixed with the aid of Poligrip adhesive, welcomed back Takeshi Hakozaki, David Shaw & Tony Quaid.

Healy nearly misses out

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

The Pattaya Golf Society’s largest field of the low season travelled to the tasty Crystal Bay course at Bangpra for their weekly medal competition on Tuesday, July 5, and the combination on offer was the delicious “A” and “B” nines, with its mixture of trees, water and sand. Add to the mix a strong breeze and you have the recipe for a fine day’s golfing challenge. The day started with a headache for the starter as two cars bearing five golfers decided to take a circuitous route and get lost but eventually all got off on time. The course was to play long as the white tees were pushed back to their furthest extent and in division two the field also found the racing, undulating greens were difficult to come to grips with but casual golfer George Meigh managed better than most with a fine net 76. Two were destined to post the same score of net 77 and Barry Pethig and Ken Graham shared the flight title. In division one the scores were better. Current PGS Player of the Month, John Cunningham, enjoyed his first visit to the course and posted an excellent net 75 with but one six on his card. Sunny Khanna is still showing good form and his net 74 was good enough for second place. One of the drivers who earlier had enjoyed visiting the Chonburi hinterland was former London cabbie John Healy. Whilst having the “knowledge” may have helped him in his previous life his experience of the course helped him to get over the poor start to the day and he posted the day’s best gross of 82, recording a score of net 73 which included eight pars and a birdie. The size and pace of the greens prevented any birdie two’s from being recorded and the booby was presented to Mr. Denis because he inexplicably forgot that the prize had been changed and had donated a fine hand of bananas. He received a big hand when they were presented! Crystal Bay was in fine form, as was John Healy, the man who nearly missed out.

Sunny Khanna Wait to Return to Pattaya!

On Thursday, July 7, the Pattaya Golf Society left the OK Corral and took the well trodden route to the Royal Thai Navy course at Plutaluang for their weekly stableford event, over the South and East nines, under heavy skies. The course was well turned out and for some it was a relief to find slower greens than two days previously at Crystal Bay. All the principals showed up well with the first three all shooting par or better. John Healy continued his good form, collecting nineteen points on the South nine, only to falter on East 3, eventually adding another seventeen points to level par. Going one better was Brian Wilkinson and his 37 points belied his poor start to the back nine, picking up only two points on the starting two holes. It was left to Sunny Khanna to post the day’s best score and his 39 points served to remind him of his time in Pattaya when he returned to UK only hours after his victory. Ken Graham celebrated in style when he took the twice rolled-over twos pot for his birdie putt on the tricky South 4 hole, his putt curling and rolling teasingly down the slope into the hole. The new OK Booby Bevy could have gone to newbie Kris Pinyoun for excessive cell phone use, or Gary Bingham for his low score, or indeed John Cunningham for a similar embarrassment. It went eventually to Len Jones as his caddy also allowed her ‘phone to interrupt play and he gleefully accepted the booby on her behalf. Such things happen on an enjoyable golf day with the Pattaya Golf Society.

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Monday, July 4th, was it going to be an American that wins the day or some one else. As in history, the British kept a-coming and wouldn’t give up easily. They came through the sand traps and they came through the trees, they came through the fairways and charged through the greens. In the end, old veteran, Dick Caggiano the only American near the top came through for the Americans and managed to pip the British at the finish line. Dick won on countback by a narrowest or margins to win the day with 39 points.

Nipping at Dick’s heels were Big Alan Pearce and golf chairman Chris John. Both came in with identical scores as Dick, but Dick was in better condition for the final surge. Another British golfer was just back at 38 points to round out the top. Mike Gerrard had another good day and nearly won the day again.

Holding the bag this week was our friend Jim Tully. He had managed to stay out of the cellar for quite awhile but stubbed his big toe and tripped back into the cellar. Jim had a miserable day as he could manage only 16 points to round out his day. I guess he must have been in a hurry to get to the 4th of July party and left his game at home. Sorry to say, no one came close to Tully as he hoisted the bag for the day.

One-Ball Putts ‘em All and Wins

IPGC Golf From Lewiinski’s

Sunday July 3
Green Valley
White Tees
Stableford

1st A Flight: Joe Mooneyham, 39 pts
2nd A Flight: Phil Mitchell, 38 pts
3rd A Flight: Bob Newell, 38 pts
1st B Flight: George Jackson, 38 pts
2nd B Flight: Bob Lindborg, 37 pts
3rd B Flight: Jim Munns, 37 pts
1st C Flight: Ray Dell, 38 pts
2nd C Flight: Toy Theobald, 36 pts
3rd C Flight: Mike Seely, 36 pts
Near Pin: #8 Jim Munns; #13 Mike Seely

A case could well be made that Joe “I’m in the” Mooneyham had a clear shot at the title slot given his ‘Man of the Match’ 39 points and later in the week podium step, but since I gave One- Ball the business last week, I will re-ingratiate myself to him by putting him in the lights. Joe topped the premier Flight, his residency in which is now well-established. That left Flipper and Bob Newell (he is lucky the moniker Capt. Fogg is taken) in a count back with the wily ol’ five handicapper winning out, as well he should have, given his fine gross 75.

Ah yes, One-Ball takes the interim Flight with his 38 points leaving a couple of vets, the Sultan of Green Valley, and our beloved Capt. Fogg locked in mortal count back. Bob took it while Jim was in a trance.

Ray Dell, came straight off the injured reserve list and stepped right into the glare of the klieg lights. His 38 points in the junior lot gave him the only two-point advantage on the day, that being over Toy Theobald and Mike Seely. Beauty overcame, as it does so often in Pattaya, as Auntie Toy took the count back.

Tuesday July 5
Laem Chabang, B & C
Blue or White Tees
Stableford

1st Blue Flight: Phil Groves, 39 pts
1st White Flight: Pete Murray, 38 pts
2nd White Flight: Jeff Buehler, 38 pts
3rd White Flight: Eddy Beilby, 36 pts
Near Pins: #B8 Eddy Beilby; #C8 Joe McArdle

The field took heed from that old adage of “Once bitten, Twice Shy”. The bravado shown last week when Lake and Valley nines were also taken on was dulled as a smaller percentage of the field took on the Blues. That lack of quantity didn’t diminish the quality as winner Phil Groves garnered 39 points off a gross 76.

Good, ol’ Pete Murray shake, rattled and rolled his way to a more favorably distributed 38 points then Jeff “The Bull” Jeff Buehler to take the still challenging White teed Flight. Eddy Beilby, happy to be off the rigs, tidied up the Pale Flight with 36 points.

Wednesday June 6
Burapha, A & C
Blue or White Tees
Stableford

1st Blue Flight: Steve Carleton, 36 pts
2nd Blue Flight: Jack Mosely, 35 pts
1st White Flight: George Cousins, 38 pts
2nd White Flight: John Merrick, 38 pts
3rd White Flight: Mike Craighead, 34 pts
4th White Flight: Colin Davis, 34 pts

It was back to the Burapha where once again the unlikely pairing of American Wood and Crystal were the task at hand. Steve Carleton showed that girth wasn’t a requirement for taking on the Blues as he used his supple power and innate talent to edge second place Jack Mosely by one point.

In the White Flight, a couple of Milner’s Marauders from Down under, George Cousins and John Merrick, split the top two places with 38 points each. The balance the podium was to be filled by fellow that had 34 points. But which two? The numbers went favorably for Mike the Mechanic and The Donkey, but Max “I’m not a Factor” Arlen was left out in the cold.

Friday July 8
Eastern Star
Blue or White Tees
Stableford

1st Blue Flight: Mike Gerrard, 35 pts
1st White Flight: Sunny Khanna, 37 pts
2nd White Flight: Ken Graham, 37 pts
3rd White Flight: Mike Holmes, 36 pts
4th White Flight: Joe Mooneyham, 35 pts
Near Pins #17 Rick Sharp

The last day of the week is usually held on one of the “local” courses when possible to mitigate Friday Sukhumvit traffic. So it was off to Eastern Star Resort. Mike Gerrard, a late entry, took the long Flight with a very creditable 35 points.

Sunny “Booby Hebb” Khanna edged Kenny Graham on count back to take the White Flight, whilst another Milner Marauder, Mike Holmes came third a point adrift. Our almost title boy, Joe “I’m Barely in the” Mooneyham, grabbed the second fourth place of the week thanks to count back over Bruce Milner’s right hand man, Bruce McAdam.

Burapha Golf Club - Wednesday July 6

Roger Privett again stood on top the winner rostrum, but today he shared it the Ken Graham both with a net 74, in third place was Paul Jordaan with net 77. Near the pins were won by Enda Naughton (2) and John King.

Phoenix Country Club - Friday July 8

Playing the mountain course first, in rain and then the ocean in sunshine. A battle between John Mckoen and Danny Lomas resulted in a tie for first place both with 36 stableford points. A three was tie for third place with John King, Paul Smith and Granville Swanton, all with 34 points. Bryan Rought won “B” division with 42 stableford points. Second was Ron Souter with 40 points and third came Tony Shepherd with 36 points. Near the pins were won by John King, Bryan Rought, Paul Smith and Danny Lomas.

The Bunker Boys are located on Soi Chaiyapoon (near X-zyte disco and across the street from Tony’s Disco II). Monthly golf schedules are available or consult the Pattaya Mail every week.

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s Beach Bar

Tuesday July 5
Crystal Bay
Stableford

I always liked this course, through all its name changes, after all it is pretty much the same course, I don’t even miss it when I am zooming down Sukhumvit and looking for Natural Park Resort. Well not often!

Winners with Max (left) & staff.

The morning started as normal. Meet at Bert’s, breakfast, into the cars and down the traffic jam called Sukhumvit, to Crystal Bay. Arriving there a pleasant book in, to this fine Clubhouse, and onto the fine course. The test this time being the B & A nines. For some reason we always play it that way around, if I ask them maybe they will change the names around so it sounds better.

Fine golf on a fine course, mind it was a bit dry, but not too bad. The round flowed quite well, and it was not long before we were relaxing in the fine clubhouse, before the mad drive back in the rush hour traffic.

Back at Bert’s the chicken and chips were waiting, whilst Max sorted out the contenders, all wanting to buy the beers all night. So we had two winners, Ray (No R) Spence, for those who have less shots to play with, and Alan Gummer for those with a lot of shots to play with.

Then the night being young, a good time was had by all. T.T.F.N.

Winners: 0-18 Ray Spence and 19-36 Alan Gummer

Near Pins: Ray Spence, Derek Brook, Jeff Wylie, Mike Wing, Punyanut Gale (2), Alan Gummer and Keith Avery.

Long Putts: Jeff Wylie and Derek Brook

PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday July 4
Treasure Hill
Stableford

With the admiral taking a rare day’s sick leave for a final inspection on a “dodgy peg”, a good turnout of some thirty-one golfers sailed north to Treasure Hill for this Monday’s challenge.

Rodney Clarke

And a tough challenge it turned out to be, as the course was found to be a combination of two extremes, with the greens being in excellent condition and the fairways suffering somewhat it would appear, from the recent drought.

Having said that however the course was more than playable and our intrepid group soldiered on without complaint.

All was plain sailing it appeared for the rookie organizers, until an oversight on their part resulted in the last group failing to collect the technical prize markers and the prospect of a last minute dash to the six designated greens loomed large.

Rick Evans

Highly tuned athletes as they are, this did seem a somewhat daunting task following a round of golf and a couple of “tigers”, but to their relief the day was saved by the Treasure Hill management, who promptly organized a buggy and driver to make the collection, so a big thank you to them.

On with the competition then and with the scores reflecting the difficulty of the course only one man, Brian Gaussa, managed to beat his handicap to win the ‘B flight’ with 38pts from Wayne Koch 35pts in second and Gene Rooney 32pts in third.

In the ‘A flight’ that fine golfer Monte Sykes once again pulled out the stops to take first place with 36 pts from the amiable Irishman Fergus Brennan 35pts in second and Clive Robinson 34pts coming third.

Technical Prizes:

Nearest Pins: #2 Steve Hamstead, Fergus Brennan, Frank Kelly; #6 Karsten Kristensen

Long Putts: #9 Monte Sykes; #18 Gordon Evingham

Thursday July 7
Bangpra
Stableford

This course seems to be in favour at present as it is played so often. Normally this time of the year the really good courses get played, because they are not as packed as in the high season, so we play Bangpra. Unfortunately this year, with the shortage of water, the course is bone dry. This has mainly affected the fairways, where divots do not disappear and brown patches are apparent, however the greens are also suffering because the temptation is to leave too much grass on, thus they are playable by mere mortals.

Monte Sykes

So on this day the conditions were really tough, with a strong wind and hard ground. In the circumstances it was not surprising that nobody beat the course.

In the A Flight, 0 to 17, we had a countback for the win, with 36 points, won by Rick Evans, with Ebrahim in second. We also had a countback for third, on 35 points, won by Jim Boyd with Ron Gale just losing out.

In the B Flight, 18 upwards, the winner was Rodney Clarke with 36 points. Rodney has just returned for his annual 3 weeks holiday and promises to go home with a reduced handicap. In second we had a countback on 35 points, won by Dave Richardson with Pete King in third.

This is the place where I would normally tell all about the super hot tub in the changing room where you can ease away the aches of a game of golf, followed by my normal Rainbow ice-cream, the best in the area. Next time maybe! T.T.F.N.

Near Pins: #8Jim Boyd; #12Ebrahim

Tom & Ray go 50-50 at Century

PSC golf off the Grapevine

Thursday, July 7 saw the Grapevine golfers head to Century Chonburi for a day of great value golf. With the course in good condition and so well priced, this truly is a great golf package.

With 24 players, we had 2 flights: 0-18, and 19 up, but very few golfers were able to master the course with only ‘A’ flight players breaking their handicap. In the ‘A’ flight, we had Ray Spence just pipping Alan Pearce on a countback after both had 39 points, Ray blitzing the back 9 with 24 points. In the ‘B’ Flight, Tom Herrington followed up his 2nd placing last week by climbing one more level to top the podium with 36 points. Keith Avery scrambled into 2nd place despite, as he said, “playing terribly”.

This week’s Grapevine winners Ray and Tom.

Technical prizes were spread very evenly with long puts by Mike Gaussa and Ray Spence, while near pins were won by Mike Wing, Alan Gummer, Al Sodhi, Keith Avery, Mikael Anderson, Ian Covill, & Joel Flor. The lucky draws were won by Gordon and Bob. Many thanks to Malcolm & Opal of The Grapevine for looking after the golfers with breakfast, and double-baked potatoes, roast pork, and veggies for dinner. The golfers meet at The Grapevine, Soi Regent Marina (off Beach Road) each Thursday at 8 a.m. for complimentary breakfast before leaving at 9 a.m. for golf. Sign-up sheet at The Grapevine, or call 038 361 736 for more information. Cheers & good golfing (JW)

The Beautiful Game?: Hello, Handsome Man!

Riz Taylor

An attention seeking headline in more ways than one, but the similarities between life in Pattaya and the world of football aren’t as far apart as one might imagine.

Whilst club managers don’t necessarily don dresses, slap on make-up and hit the town saying “Hello, handsome man” or “I go with you” to passing talent, it might yet come to that as the battle to attract the best available players becomes ever more competitive. There seems to be few available players on the market this summer, and those that are find themselves courted by at least two or three different suitors.

It’s not always a fair fight, either. Just ask Everton manager David Moyes. Last week he was beaten to the signing of Mohammed Sissoko, a 20 year-old Malian and former member of Guy Roux’s famed youth academy at Auxerre. That the midfielder chose to sign for Liverpool will be all the more painful for the fiery Scot.

Liverpool’s Champions’ League triumph will help matters in their quest to strengthen, as will the prestige of years of success both domestically and abroad, and it’s hard to point fingers at young Sissoko. He’ll join a host of new signings at Anfield that include Boudewijn Zenden from Middlesbrough, Villarreal goalkeeper Jose Reina, Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez and full-back Antonio Barragan from Seville, as manager Rafael Benitez shamelessly plunders his home country for new faces.

Everton are far from alone in their troubles attracting players, and at least the Toffees have the lure of Champions’ League football. It’s even more difficult for the clubs that finished below them, and the European aspirations of mid-table sides such as Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are also affected by a lack of prestige in the eyes of footballers.

Frank Arnesen has admitted that a prime reason for moving to Chelsea, where he will become Sporting Director at the beginning of September, was Spurs’ inability to attract big-name signings to White Hart Lane.

Speaking to the News of the World, the disloyal Dane said: “I have been at a club where we were always at the back of the queue. Chelsea and Arsenal were always at the front of the queue signing the big players. I didn’t like that. In recent years Spurs have spent the same money as Arsenal on players but just look at the difference. Players see that, and players know that, and so the top players will always want to sign for Arsenal or for Chelsea instead.”

Nothing to do with his enormous rise in salary, then. Talking of money, paying huge sums often represents the only other option to available to many clubs. If Tottenham and Villa can at least use the big city factor in wooing potential candidates, the same cannot be said of North Eastern sides such as Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. For them there is no lure of the capital and little to crow about in terms of historical success. Long time Spurs target Scott Parker recently agreed terms of a reported 55,000 pounds a week at Newcastle, surely an exorbitant amount of cash for a young man who barely featured for Chelsea and is yet to make his name as a top Premiership performer. Yet United have little choice.

What is more, they open themselves up to football’s mercenaries - players who turn up for the cash but fail to produce. One such example was the disastrous capture of Patrick Kluivert, who makes his way back to Spain and Valencia with suitcases full of cash and a grin as wide as the Tyne.

Graeme Souness is also pursuing Emre, a versatile midfielder currently employed by Inter Milan. Once again the club will be forced to pay a huge premium if they’re to deliver another big name to the Toon faithful. You also wonder why the diminutive Turk would be interested in moving to another huge and underachieving club that play in stripes, especially with considerably worse weather. Buoyed by this news, Sunderland are also tracking developments.

On this evidence you’d expect Chelsea to hold the aces in the game of attracting players. Huge wages, the chance of some anonymity for young superstars in the capital and the recent capture of the league title make Stamford Bridge an attractive proposition. But operating in a different financial stratosphere to the competition brings headaches of its own, in Chelsea’s case other clubs holding them to ransom in terms of transfer fees. Jose Mourinho continues to be linked with the signing of every half decent player in Europe, yet clubs continue to hold out for more cash. Expect movement just before the season begins as the poker faces of club bosses around Europe are broken by Chelsea’s frantic cheque-waving.

As manager of a newly promoted side, Wigan boss Paul Jewell is having the most difficulty. “It’s been a tough summer in the transfer market, but I always knew it would be. We’re on the phone constantly and I’m positive things will start to move very soon,” he said recently whilst scribbling out a few more names in his little black book.

Desperate times for the likeable Jewell, then. Perhaps adopting a Thai accent and shouting “Hello, welcam!” to passing footballers might turn things around. It must be worth a try.

News in brief

Steven Gerrard has finally put pen to paper and signed a new four year contract with Liverpool after months of dithering. By contrast, Kop hero Jamie Carragher has also quietly agreed a new deal with the minimum of fuss.

British Lions and World Cup winning England rugby coach Sir Edward Woodward has taken a break from apprehending bad guys in ‘The Equalizer’ and accepted the role of Technical Director at Southampton, which should mean an much needed improvement at line-outs and shooting over the bar at St. Mary’s.

Loveable Welsh striker Craig Bellamy has joined Blackburn Rovers, Charlton’s Jason Euell is a target for Portsmouth and West Ham, and Stuart Pearce is busy lining up prospective reinforcements at Manchester City to be funded by the sale of Shaun Wright-Phillips, should Chelsea decide to fax him a ridiculous offer.

Finally, tickets for Everton, Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers’ impending visit to Thailand are now on sale at www.thaiticketmaster.com/sport or on 02 262 3456.

Evason Phuket Race Week: A feast of yacht racing

Peter Cummins
Pattaya

The major event, in a week of great yacht racing, hosted for the second time by the splendid, huge five-star Evason Phuket Resort and Six Senses Spa, will be held from the July 28 to the 31, with all racing clearly in view from the headquarters resort, on the edge of the beautiful bay of Laem Ka, on Phuket’s southern tip. Prior to these five days, two other events will be held: the Naga Cup from on 23, 24 July, a special championship for the burgeoning fleet of Phuket 8, one-design craft, and a new competition, the Skiff Asia Dinghy racing on July 27.

Claude Baltes (right), Evason Phuket resident manager and perennial regatta emcee Bill O’Leary (left) congratulates two of last year’s winners.

A number of the big fleet of keelboats and ocean-going multi-hulls from the Ocean Marina will be challenging “the southerners” and overseas entries, for the silverware.

Phuket Race Week is one of the many big regattas to be held so far this year around the Kingdom.

As Grenville Fordham, of Image Asia and one of the Phuket Race Week founders, pointed out last week, “managing a new regatta in post-tsunami Phuket has given us more than a few headaches, even though, according to participants, the inaugural Race Week, held in July 2004, was a great success”.

A splendid view of Laem Ka Bay from the Evason.

“The biggest hurdle this year has been to attract sponsors.” said Grenville, “as it is still a fairly new event and the Phuket business sector is suffering badly from the huge downturn in tourism that has followed in the wake of last December’s tsunami. Furthermore, off-island potential sponsors seem to be turning their backs on Phuket this year,” he noted, adding that “a major, high-profile title sponsor pulled out two months ago, just before signing contracts.

“However, in the final run-up to the regatta, things are now looking better”, he continued, announcing that the Evason Phuket Resort, the host sponsor last year, has come on board in a bigger way in 2005 as title sponsor”. In addition, property developers, Raimon Land, “which, in the past year, has become Thailand’s strongest yacht-racing supporter, is now fully endorsing Phuket’s only major low-season event. This support makes a huge difference,” said Grenville.

Promenade of the beautiful Evason Phuket Resort and Six senses Spa.

Among other major supporters of the Phuket Race Week are three of the island’s marinas: the recently-opened Royal Phuket Marina, the Yacht Haven and the Boat Lagoon, while the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and a number of the island’s marine sector, the Phuket International Hospital, Sunsail, Latitude 8 Yachts, Thai Marine Leisure, Sea-phuket.com, Perfection Spa, Phuket Inter Woodwork, Electrical Marine, SIMRAD and Emergency Asia are all backing the regatta.

One of the Phuket designed and built Phuket 8’s heads out onto the start line at Laem Ka Bay.

“We’re effectively promoting the unique Phuket lifestyle, demonstrating that a good time can be had in Phuket all year round, not just in the high season,” said Grenville.

Also good news this year is the number of entries. “We miscalculated entries last year,” said Andy Dowden, co-founder of the regatta, ex-King’s Cup President and a director of Image Asia. “We made assumptions that turned out to be over-optimistic,” he added. “This time, however, after individual contact with all potential entries, we are confident of more than 30 boats”, said Andy.

If the organizers can count on these, numbers it will be a real achievement. This year saw both Phang Nga Bay Regatta and Samui Regatta set sail with less participants than previous years. Yet, another new yacht race, the Top of the Gulf Regatta, launched this year in May, was an outstanding success - with more than 100 entries - and it has added to the options for potential competitors, with a choice of when and where to take part.

Racing at Evason Phuket Raceweek will be staged in five classes: Racing/Sports Boats (4 confirmed); IRC (13 confirmed); Club Class (5 confirmed); Ocean Sports Multi-hull (6 confirmed) and Ocean Performance Multi-hull (5 confirmed).

As at the inaugural event last year, race officials are being flown in from overseas, to ensure the highest standards of race management and the Evason Phuket Race Week will again be organized under the aegis of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

Last week wasn’t one of my finest. I forgot the birthday of HRH Princess Chulabhorn but then you see I’m making a career, such as it is, of forgetting Royal Birthdays. But I did remember the birthday of Royal Highness Princess Soamsawalee a very happy 4th Cycle Royal Birthday. Then I get the following e-mail. “Hey Pal,” Always watch out when they start with “Hi Pal.” “You think because I’m not a boxing fan that I don’t read your garbage? Huh? Well you might be able to get away with your uncensored c*** but us Christian Right Wing Sons of the Gospel Devotees have your number Mr. Smut breeder. Think we would not catch the next to the last sentence of your second paragraph. Just what kind of filth are your trying to portray as boxing news? Huh? Huh? Your time will come when you will meet the ‘Real Peter’ and HE willith smite (whatever that means) you hithertoo. So take that. Your Pal, husband of dumb woman who could have had you with little effort.” That would be no effort. How about that?

I almost typed something really stupid. What was that? “Remember last week?” Of course we don’t remember last week. Let’s have a “do over.” The WBA has mandated that Guilty Boxing stage a “title eliminator” between its #1 Prawet Singwancha (26-2-1, 16 KO’s) and #4 contender Ebo Elder (22-1, 14 KOs). OK! “You got to do what you got to do. The winner of that contest would get Champion Juan Diaz. “We are extremely excited to be negotiating with all sides in order to make this world title-elimination bout a reality as quickly as possible,” said Jay Hassman, vice president for Guilty Boxing. What did Prawet do to achieve this honor? Well he’ll be doing the business on August 8 on the “Send in the Clowns” card when he hammers Samuel Duran (70-24). Of course that Duran is 0-4 since 2002 makes no difference. What a joke.

Jeffery Pamungkas is a boxing writer from Indonesia who’s story’s pop up on various websites. He’s usually writing about either the next Chris John’s fight or the death of a fighter in the rings of Indonesia. Both events occur with about the same regularity. Upon further review John’s only had three fights since 2004 so he trails ring deaths in Indonesia by 2. Sorry about that. Back to Jeffery Pamungkas. Found the following while cruising the web, “With a disappointing performance, Daudy Bahari (27-1, 11 KO’s), retained his PABA light welterweight title in Jakarta, Indonesia with a decision over the mandatory challenger Pongsak Rientuanthong of Thailand, reportedly 8-1 Rienthuanthong was promoted as a former Sydney Olympics Thai boxing team member, but was actually an awful opponent. Bahari, son of the promoter of the bout Daniel Bahari, however didn’t do much to showcase his ability although he was able to knock down the Thai fighter in round five. Projected as the next world champion from Indonesia, it seems that “The Bali Boy” Bahari, rated WBA #6, is still far away from his dream as a world contender.” The Thai official record is 1-1. But then consider a little lying on records is better than another ring death.

The latest next great heavyweight isn’t Samual Peter KO’d, something called Taurus Sykes who could never work in the breakfast line cause he couldn’t break an egg to make an omelette. After the fight we hear from the promoter Dino Duva, “I hear (Vitali) Klitschko’s looking for someone to fight on September 24. Let’s go! Come on! Samuel is worthy of a title shot immediately,” Shirley you’re joking. Here’s a little reality Mr. Duva. Klitschko would whip the floor up with your heavy Peter. He can’t throw a jab, moves with all the grace of a hippo on ice skates and has only the minimum boxing skills. He’s a bigger, taller David Tua. If he fought Chris Byrd, Peter wouldn’t land a punch. Meanwhile in the Land of Brats, VW’s and Bodacious Ta’s Ta’s Willi Fisher, who lost to Herbie Hyde in 1998, is back. Well kind of. Fighting outside Frankfurt, he won a 4 round decision over “not ready for prime time” Vlado Szabo. Mr. Szabo’s record? 0-13. Be still my beating heart.

Seems the “Let’s ross some shrimp on the barbie” crowd has finally discovered that bringing in Thai fighters is a good deal. IBF#7 jr lightweight Nedal Hussein (38-2) got a 5th round scored a fifth round TKO over Aree Phosuwangym (9-3-1) of Thailand on at the Bellevue Function Centre, Bankstown, NSW, Australia. Still on the “Down Under Theme”, Danny Green just four months from a MD losing effort against WBC Super Middle Champ Markus Beyer got back in the ring. He impressively KO’d James Crawford in 5. This was Green’s first non Jeff Fenech trained contest as Ismael Salas took over when Fenech decided to work with Mike Tyson. Great career move Jeff. “The Australian connected with a ram rod straight lefts, hard left hooks and solid right hands to the head and body to have the visitor on the defensive continually”

While awaiting for his WBC lightweight title fight that he earned with a 7th stanza KO on May 14 in Las Vegas Sirimongkol Singwancha (49-2, 29 ) got a fourth round TKO over Rodney Jun Alba (reportedly 11-7-2,2 KOs at Muangthong Thanee Stadium in Nonthaburi. Forget that Alba’s “real” record is 2-6-2. No problem. Keep busy. WBC#3 light fly Wandee Singwancha (45-7-1,10 KO’s) was on the same card. “He proved the better man with his faster and more accurate punches, scoring all 59-56 unanimous decision over former WBC Youth title challenger Jhay Herla (reportedly 12-14-3, 9 KO’s) in a six round non-title bout.” He ought to have won. While Herla is 12-14 he has lost 12 of his last 13. On the way down? Nope already there.

Whale of a fight on tap Sunday morning from Las Vegas, when Wayne McCullough (27-4) gets a rematch with maybe the best in the business Oscar Larios (55-3). Anyone that ventured to watch their first contest on February 10 in the middle of the green garden farm fields of Central California at Injun Casino knows that an old fashion “Pier 9er Brawl” is in the offering. Their first encounter ended in a somewhat one-sided UD for Larios. Ringside The Square Ring though it might be a little closer but that’s why Baskin and Robbins has more than one flavor. The problem seemed to be that McCullough who had only 2 fights in 23 months didn’t have a lot of sting in his punches in the later stanza’s. That probably won’t be a problem this time out. Regardless it will take McCullough’s best to beat the best Super Bantam in the world. On the under card of this Vegas Extravaganza is Bernard Hopkins (46-2-1) against Jermain Taylor (23-0) for a whole bunch of middleweight titles. “Yes I will have just one beverage. Thank you.”

229th Independence Day Celebration-Merci Lafayette

Pattaya Hash House Harriers - Run #113

Double job today, Hash P. and scribe, so let’s go. About the run, I’ve heard it was a good run, because I couldn’t run yet with my sprained ankle since the “cattle field run” (Spagh?). So, good run set by “Steve call me lady boy” Spunk Bubble and Right Said. The A-site was somewhere south east of the Bronx and north something of Pattaya.

GM called “le Circle” dealt with “nouvelles godasses” (shoes) only 1 this week, Retard W*nker with Red Shoes? Then the “Lievres” (Hares) sent us to the wilderness, there is a “Court chemin” (short run) for the walkers ending at “Le grand trou” (big hole).

30 minutes later, the front runners come in and the rest is history. After the usual “Causette” (grazing) and drinks, our GM “Le Crapaud Volent” (F. FROG) called the circle and the Hares “Sur Glace” (on the ice) like the Cointreau. Everybody and your Uncle agreed it was a good run, nothing “extraordinaire” but not deserving a “Hash Caca”. Spunk Bubble back on the ice for some queer advertising in a local magazine noted,” Hi, I am Steve and looking for a nice lady boy” I miss something here?

GM passed the Circle to Festering Streaker (Bad RA this week) Hares back on the ice, something to do with the run too “court” (short), never heard about small is beautiful, Julian? Then time for the “Red shoes” from “Branleur Retarde” Retard W*nker on the ice for plugging his red shoes, what will it be next time? It’s a strange man. T4 and Fini on in something about a “pink painting” story. Hash family has grown by one more member, a lovely baby girl, which Apple’s Turnover is the proud father and is duly iced for it.

Et maintenant Mes Dames et Monsieurs, la fete va commencer (roulement de tambour) back from Belgian wilderness, our own Fini le Pedale The F**T and pronto the whole American colony on the ice for the Independence Celebration and for what reason the Frog Eaters and the (Le Francais”) French speaking Belgians joined them. Ask Fini why?

Special paragraph for the French: Il n’est jamais top tard d’etudier l’anglais, meme a Pattaya, courir et boire n’est plus a apprendre.

Knob Marley on the ice for having a private circle and is joined by the Harry Potter Trio. Next Fini in the bucket for “surprise” forgetting his Trash Chapeau followed by TQ2 master Spunk Bubble for allowing his virgins cracks sitting in the back.

F. Dog is called in with Apples Turnover, showing Apples how to put a nappy on his baby girl.

On the side, 1 Anniversary, Katoey A. M. has today 50 runs, well done mate!

Hash S**t holders on the ice Retard W*nker and Tortellini Head, joined by Miserable C., BNB and Ringworm. Why? No bloody idea, mon ami. Then the Brits on the ice for losing the war in 1776?

Circle goes back to Sir Chicken F., King Yao Yao iced with Apples Turnover for being a volunteer godfather of Apple’s baby girl.

To stay in the good ambiance we had some American look a like girls to be baptized with a new name Resident Evil, Spoiled Shrimps and Fresh Fish formally well known as TQ2 resident cracks.

Back to “Le Crapaud Volent” GM Flying Frog and Sir Chicken F. iced for his brilliant debut as Hot Dog Lady (Competition with me?) Hares on the ice for not having a Hash Song and letting the American looking like girls sing the “Chang Chang Song”

Circle given to “Trace De Sperm” Seaman Stains for his weekly rendition of “Le Chariot”

All to TQ2 to celebrate with the USA’ers their Independence Day with a lot of beers and food, just a shame that certain Hashers don’t have any respect and manners for the sponsors. I hope the good GM will deal with those guys next week!

ON ON VV

Answer: You bet, I will deal with those non-respect Hashers next Monday with a big surprise they’ll never forget!

GM FF
